Screenshot's easy to explain in brief words already. No need to display band members in the video just to identify them there. No proof that omitting the screenshot detriments understanding of the whole song (or music video). May fail "contextual significance" criterion. George Ho (talk) 00:05, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: remove from Andromeda (mythology). Point six of WP:NFC#UUI applies. plicit 05:59, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File:Clash of the titansposter.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Andrzejbanas (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Remove from Andromeda (mythology). Pretty sure this image fails WP:NFCC#8 with its use in Andromeda (mythology)#In film since the subject of the article is not the film. Readers can just go to Clash of the Titans (1981 film), which is linked at Andromeda (mythology)#In film, to see the poster since the poster meets all WP:NFCC in Clash of the Titans (1981 film). Steel1943 (talk) 00:58, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

KEEP: The Clash of the Titans is directly discussed and reliably cited in the article, where it l makes a visual point vital to the article. Thee point made by the scholar is that the film can be criticised for casting a white actress (pictured) as the (black Aethiopian) Andromeda, This is important to the article, as Andromeda has a long tradition of being shown as white, and the film is the major modern case proving the misrepresentation has continued. Saying folks can look elsewhere misses the point that the film's poster directly and visceral demonstrates the enduring and still-current image, which a footnote that most readers will skip simply fails to achieve. I have extended the non-free usage rationale to this effect. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:08, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: While I agree the rational for that citation, the poster does not really illustrate that point, so I don't know if it is valid here. It does predominantly feature two actors who appear to be white, but it's a stylized image and doesn't represent the cast at large. Andrzejbanas (talk) 12:06, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for agreeing that the rationale is correct. I'll note that the article is not concerned with the cast at large. The article is about Andromeda, who is played by Judi Bowker, the white woman in the poster. The image is ideally suited to the scholar's point made in the article. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:19, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, fails WP:NFCC 8 as removal of the image would not be detrimental to readers' understanding of the article. Stifle (talk) 11:10, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • On the contrary, it contributes directly to understanding; the conspicuously scantily clad white female in the image "is worth a thousand words", as images often are. On such a highly visual topic as painterly and filmic misrepresentation, claiming that understanding can be conveyed purely with words is simply wrong. Let me remind you what NFCC #8 actually says: "its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding" (i.e., both at once). Well, the image shows, immediately and incontrovertibly, that the Andromeda figure is still being seen by the male gaze as a desirable sex object, and that it is assumed to be white. Its presence thus certainly significantly helps the reader, and its absence would definitely be an impediment, so the criterion is met. Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:56, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, but remove from Andromeda (mythology). More suitable and fitting for the film article, honestly. I dunno why Stifle voted "delete", but the vote is hardly surprising, honestly. Don't wanna assume bad faith or anything like that, but I can't help wonder whether Stifle fully read the nomination rationale and looked up which articles are currently using this poster. George Ho (talk) 12:24, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • George Ho - there is no challenge to the use in the film article. Did you read my rationale for keeping it in Andromeda? It is certainly justified there by NFCC #8. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:28, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You mean the "its omission would be detrimental to that understanding" part? The article topic is the mythology Andromeda; the movie poster is used there. The "In film" section details just two films in brief(est) summaries, yet I fail to see how omitting the poster from the mythology article would detriment such understanding. For all I know, there are already free alternative images of that mythological figure. I don't see a need to include non-free content whose use fails NFCC.
Re-reading your rationale, I appreciate your arguments about favoring such use. However, I still stand by my opinions about this. Readers would already understand the mythological topic (primarily by looking at free images) without the movie poster. George Ho (talk) 12:42, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • No, there are no free images from the film, so nobody will understand any of the points I've made from them. But I see I need to extend the text around the image there. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:46, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Re-reading your argument again, I see you wanna illustrate Gates's point about white actress portraying Andromeda. I'm still adamant about the movie poster in the mythology article, regardless of text extension attempts. What about using a free image of Alexa Davalos instead? George Ho (talk) 12:56, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can't help wonder why both film articles don't detail or mention Gates's criticism about white actresses portraying Andromeda. George Ho (talk) 12:59, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
        • Indeed. A photo of Davalos would just show she's a white brunette; it won't show her as a grossly misrepresented Andromeda who Western artistic tradition has somehow turned from black Aethiopian to white American, right into the late 20th century, so it'd look distinctly more like a "decorative" image than the current one which actually informs the reader. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:02, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The poster shows so many elements of what the film is about, honestly. I can see the artist's rendition of Andromeda the film, but the poster doesn't focus on her primarily. Furthermore, she's farther away, and the size of her is full body but small, similar to a male protagonist whom she's embracing with. Oh, and did I mention that she's embracing the male protagonist and facing an unseen villain?
As I must say, the poster is too detailed with multiple elements (not just of Andromeda but many others seen in the poster) to illustrate Andromeda herself. A free image primarily focusing on Andromeda (of any form and shape)... or a free image of Davalos herself (which I'm still adamant about) is a more appropriate approach, IMO. George Ho (talk) 13:25, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are set in your opinion, but for other editors who may read this, the article contains many images of Andromeda, none suitable for the point about film; and non-film mugshots of actresses don't in any way make the point either. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:31, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you still insist on using film materials, how about instead screenshots of actresses portraying Andromeda? The screenshots fit more nicely than the poster, IMO. George Ho (talk) 13:49, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Certainly keep for the film. Personally, I think the discussion in the text at Andromeda (mythology)#In film is enough to justify it there too. Johnbod (talk) 13:32, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I wanted to stay out of this discussion, since there are two confused issues here—one can't justify using the poster as an illustration unless there's a genuine issue as to Andromeda's portrayal, and I suspect that's been grossly overblown, when the evidence seems to be that "Aethiopia" was simply used by the Greeks as "a faraway place" without any intention of describing Andromeda as black; the fact that Ovid or perhaps others with a more literal interpretation or clearer idea of geography chose to do so, or at least make a suggestion along these lines—perhaps more because it made her sound more "exotic" than because they wished to "set the record straight", doesn't change the fact that the discussion in the article sounds more like an attempt to impose modern views upon antiquity than to discuss the actual attitudes of Greek writers or artists regarding race in mythology. I don't think it makes much more sense to accuse modern artists or filmmakers of "whitewashing" for portraying figures from Greek myth as white, just because they could reasonably justify colorblind casting for any of the roles—perhaps not really a matter taken as seriously in 1980 as it is today. It seems like a question of undue weight being given to a minor and rather speculative discussion, that doesn't really require any illustration, ancient or modern.
That said, if one wishes to make the point that the poster illustrates Andromeda being depicted as white, it's not a great choice compared with say, a still picture portraying her as she's depicted in the film. The poster is small in order to justify "fair use", and the figure of Andromeda in it is smaller still; barely visible really. Wouldn't "fair use" apply just as readily to a still picture from the film? Simply saying that Andromeda was portrayed by a white actress would be just about as effective as the poster is. The poster is a fine example of something that illustrates the film, but not so much as an image of Perseus, Andromeda, Pegasus, or Medusa. It makes more sense in the article about Clash of the Titans than it does in "Andromeda". P Aculeius (talk) 15:06, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that kind of hits the nail on the head there about why taking one subject in an image, while leaving the whole image intact, is problematic per WP:NFCC#8. If cropping the image to focus solely on the subject of the article as represented in the image was an option, maybe it could work, but I thought it was some sort of legal issue where cropping a fair use image is not allowed? (Someone feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong.) Steel1943 (talk) 23:29, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing in the policy linked suggests that it wouldn't be allowed, but it would take the image out of context, and at best it's only a fantasy drawing/painting of something that would be more clearly illustrated by a still picture from the film. That's why this just isn't an ideal choice for the point being illustrated. If it's worth being illustrated—a point I think is far from settled—it should be illustrated with an image focused on the specific depiction of Andromeda, not a collage of images used to advertise the film. The problem isn't solved by zooming in or cropping the image: Andromeda should be the focus of the image. P Aculeius (talk) 00:31, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This image of an album cover is being used on an article about the contest itself and only has 2 sentences of text plus a table about the album. As such, fails WP:NFCC#8 as it doesn't significantly enhance a reader's understanding of the contest. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:51, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain, now available on Commons: c:File:The Haunted Castle (1921), poster, 2.jpg. Yann (talk) 17:30, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not 100% sure about this one. Isn't Germany have some very strict copyright laws that could cause issues? Otherwise, fine with the Commons version, but I know things like this can be complicated. Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:55, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep I believe Andrzejbanas is correct. The signature looks to me like Josef Fenneker (1895–1956), whose works will not be public domain in Germany until 2027. hinnk (talk) 18:52, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment: The version on Commons just got deleted. Ixfd64 (talk) 19:04, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I couldn't read the signature, but it is indeed not yet in the public domain in the source country. I withdraw my deletion request. Yann (talk) 12:55, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
