Chess opening edits[edit]

Are you certain your changes are a good idea? I don't think I agree with them. A numbered list is for, well, a numbered list. Chess moves aren't a numbered list. I get that it looks similar, but it's hiding what's "really" going on. It's not the first item on a list, but rather "move 1" where the "1" is a first-class part of the text. Most notably, if a move list starts beyond move 1, then this entirely breaks. I don't think this is a good idea. Are you willing to slow down and discuss this? Hi! I was doing those edits based off of formatting since it seemed rather unreasonable to me to do so when numbered lists exist. In addition, if a move list starts beyond move 1, one could simply use Template:Ordered list with parameters to start at said move. I'm aware that it's a part of notation, but the numbered list achieves the same effect, given that they look identical (minus the tab size.) Neo Purgatorio (talk) 05:17, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If the lists are not meant to be numbered and are simply supposed to represent notation it seems rather odd to me to space the number out from the moves, which, as far as I'm aware, isn't how notation is formatted. It gives the impression of it being meant to be a numbered list, which is why it made sense to me to simply convert them into numbered lists. Neo Purgatorio (talk) 05:20, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I do think you've hit on something interesting, because it looks like we don't have any current guidelines. I think this issue is larger than either of us, so I opened a thread at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Chess#Style_to_display_chess_moves to make my case - feel free to chime in there to make the case for the numbered list style, if you want.

On your second comment, I just don't see what the problem is with spacing after the number. That seems just correct - I don't think it means that we should switch to a numbered list, which is really more intended for cases where an order is desired, but the number isn't a core "part" of the list entry. e.g. an instruction list on how to change a car tire might use a numbered list where "step 2: get the jack from the trunk" might be important for order, but the number "2" isn't really closely associated with the action.
