What happened to all the rules?? A5 11:13, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I put them back. I don't think they are "stupid". It bothers me that they are not from an anthropology textbook, but in spite of (because of?) the source, they seem quite insightful and comprehensive, and I think they deserve to be here. A5 11:29, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the rules belong in this encyclopedia article, although an external link to them is a good idea. The rules are just full of bias and opinion -- I don't know how to begin to rewrite them to be up to standard. Dreamyshade 06:26, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • My impression is that most of them are universally recognized as being valid to first-order, at least in the developed world (e.g. "smoking is not cool" might be untrue in many countries). Moreover, this article could use a list of rules, and I don't see what else they should be. A5 12:39, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the things in that list aren't really social rules though. But it might be good for the article to include some common social rules in the developed world. I can see putting a few of them as examples -- the ones like "Don't stare at strangers", "Avoid laughing at your own jokes", and "Phone first before turning up at someone's house" seem all right. It would be good if this page had a reference for the meaning of 'social rule' given here. It isn't obvious to the reader that the explanation given here covers the meaning that sociologists have in mind when they say 'social rule'. (I'm not a sociologist - I wouldn't know.) There must be a basic sociology textbook that has this. Speedarius 21:57, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
