    About your proposal to remove ethical egoism in WT:VA5

    Hey. Thanks for the kindly redirection on my too-frequent answers.

    I do think that the "contested" articles that TFD and I wiki-fence over get better for the mutual (if not always collegial) investment on both our parts, nevertheless. However, I may still be "shell shocked" from previous, and continuing wiki-fencing with TFD. Again, I appreciate your caution to pause to let other editors have a chance to chime in.
    (1) Last year ten months plus on the American Revolutionary War for American independence, with fighting ending at Siege of Yorktown pretty much, versus the 'real' worldwide French-Spanish-American war against Britain including the Siege of Gibraltar in Spain and the Second Mysore War in India.
    (2) It took over two calendar years to get the United States of America article to include Puerto Ricans as US citizens in a continuing (sometimes daily) wiki-fencing with TFD. Despite US law, federal court rulings, citizen PR military service, three UN-supervised referenda, Congressional Delegate privileges office, appointing two military freshmen to Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard Academies, PR representation in National Republican and National Democratic Conventions ... But we still had to sort through all the UN committees, conferences and conventions chaired by Russia, Iran, China, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela that contradicted the other internationally sourced evidence "on balance". Nothing denying PR citizenship in the US passes at the UN General Assembly, but there are so many reports from reliable sources that Puerto Ricans cannot be US citizens because of historical colonialism (sic), they each had to be vetted in context ... so it took some months to do that ...     • The previously published article on the 1778-1787 county, titled "Ohio County (Virginia)", on the NORTH BANK of the Ohio River, with adequate citations from reliable sources, is lost to public view by an automatic link to Ohio County, West Virginia on the SOUTH BANK of Ohio River.
    - Created at the American Revolutionary War incursion north of the Ohio River by Virginia militia Major George Rogers Clark, the LOST county article had substantial French-Speaking settlements at Cahokia and Vincennes. These together with Revolution veteran settlement were ceded by Virginia to the Northwest Territory in 1787.
    - Please help to recover and reinstate the information as a separate article. Or, if you can give me a lead for general guidance, I can launch off into the wiki-spheres and give the restoration a good ol' 'college try' on my own . . .     Hi @TheVirginiaHistorian, it looks like Ohio County, Virginia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) has no prior edit history—it's always been a redirect. I see no edit history, deleted or not, at Ohio County (Virginia) (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). Is there prior text somewhere you were looking to restore? If you have multiple, reliable, independent sources to substantiate a standalone article on the Virginia county in specific, feel free to click that page's "edit" link and start building it over the redirect. I'm not as familiar with how the geographic features notability guideline works with historical entities but unless these two counties have nothing to do with each other, usually it suffices to cover a similar topic within another.     They have nothing to do with one another, and all of the information that was found at the previous Ohio County (Virginia) has been extinguished, such as the French settlement in Spanish Louisiana at St. Louis, providing militia units to support Virginia Major George Rogers Clark's capture of the French settlement at Vincennes in the American Revolutionary War, and their acceptance of Virginia governance with the persuasive assistance of the local Roman Catholic parish priests.     I can't find any prior edits or logs at "Ohio County (Virginia)". Perhaps you are thinking of a different title or phrasing? In any event, you would want to build that potential article at either Ohio County, Virginia (over the redirect) or at Draft:Ohio County, Viriginia, which is a recommended draft area where you can build the article without risking deletion.     Mass killings under communist regimes (again)

    I took a break from it and I would've hoped things would get better but they aren't. It's always the same stuff, the discussions go nowhere, etc. This is a good summary.

    I don't trust the AfD or RfC process for this article because, despite Wikipedia clearly not being about voting, it boils down to that, because more users are just going to say "per sources" and our arguments for why they're engaging in original research, synthesis, and other policy violations, and sources don't support what they claim they do... they're just going to be ignored. I may have to go to the noticeboard for sources and go one by one whether each source support the article. If you can write a neutral AfD or RfC, go for it.

    Reporting: Editing clashes with another user

    Hello Czar. I am sending you this message as I am being targeted by a random user who is accusing me of vandalism and falsifying information on an article here on Wikipedia. The article is about the South Korean movie, Once Upon a Time in High School. This user is even threatened to report me to the admins to have my account or, at the very least, my editing privileges removed. Before I tell you my request on this issue, I need to tell you how it all happened. So I was browsing through different articles on Wikipedia and then I encountered the Once Upon a Time in High School article. Upon reading it, I noticed that the last paragraph of the movie's plot was incorrect as I have seen the movie multiple times before and the last paragraph of the plot did not match with the movie's. I initially was taken aback for a few moments until I eventually decided to change the article so that the last paragraph was more accurate and correct. This was my first time editing an article on Wikipedia so I took careful actions when doing it. I even took the time to re-watch the movie once more before finalizing it, making sure there wasn't any errors. A week later, another user, the one I am referring to, reverts it back and starts accusing me of vandalism and falsifying information of the article. I then responded to the other user on the user's talk page, clarifying that I wasn't falsifying information nor vandalizing anything and I even provided a link of the movie for the other user to view to back my statements, but I have not heard from the user since. From there, I went back and undid his/her revision of my revision. I gradually waited for the other user to respond to my reply, but the other user instead went back to undid my revision again of Once Upon a Time in High School and once again accuses me of vandalism. This time, I started to get irritated and think that this other user is disregarding what I have to say and believes that he/she has justification for his/her action. I even looked up the revision history of the article and it seems that this may or may not be the first time he/she has done this to the article. Soon after, I did once more revision to the article and this again clarify that I not vandalizing nor falsifying anything, but the user still reverts it back and threatens me that he/she will report me to the admins. This is when I started to get on edge and decided to take matters into my own hands and contact the admins myself. I took some time to look up how to report to the admins, came across your name, and decided to message you. As for my request, I would like for you to confront this user and probably consider having him/her removed or blocked. When you go to the article and read the revision history, you can see a small conversation between me and the other user.     Hi @Detective Stranger, first, welcome to Wikipedia and I'm sorry your first editing experience has gone this way. It looks like @Schazjmd has confirmed the plot detail (thank you!) and can help monitor the page for changes. Since any editing community is bound to have disagreements, we have a general practice for resolving disputes: Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle. The gist is that editors are encouraged to be bold in their edits, but when the edit is disputed (reverted), to discuss on the talk page (Talk:Once Upon a Time in High School) rather than reverting back and forth out of desperation, which is known as Wikipedia:Edit warring (and note that more than three reverts on a single page in 24 hours will result in an automatic block). If the talk page discussion does not have traction, there are plenty of ways to move forward, first by seeking a third party as you did on my talk page but also by asking a forum like WT:FILM or others suggested at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. There is no rush, so if your edit is reverted, remember that there is always time to discuss and restore the suggested text at some future point.     Well, I'm glad you know what to do with it. I'm coming across a lot of odd stuff. Apparently, when AFDs or PRODs are closed, the tools don't always delete article subpages, like archived talk pages and "To do" pages. Most everything showing up on the 1000+ page list is from after ~2014 so I guess before that, administrators relied more on manual deleting each page rather than deletion tools. I've also recently found that Twinkle will delete article redirects but not article redirect talk pages so maybe it's the same problem. Liz Read! Talk! 01:52, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @Liz, if it helps, it looks like I was using a tool for that in 2014—probably User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD. If so, the good news is that was deprecated in 2017 and replaced with WP:XFDC, which is more robust. czar 02:06, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
    • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
    • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

    Due to recently announced conference realignment news, UAB and Memphis will return to playing regularly as conference opponents. I think this may warrant a revival of the previously deleted article on the rivalry.

    Growth Newsletter #19

    Welcome to the nineteenth newsletter from the Growth team!

    The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in Wikimedia projects.

    Structured tasks

    "Add an image" prototype, showing suggested image for the article
    • "Add a link" is the team's first structured task. It uses machine-learning to suggest wikilinks as easy edits for newcomers. It was deployed in May 2021 on four Wikipedias and then in July on eight more Wikipedias after we evaluated the initial results. So far, we've seen a high level of engagement from newcomers. Communities that have the feature suggested valuable ideas for improvement. We'll work on improvements and then contact more communities to deploy it.
    • "Add an image" is the team's second structured task, currently in development. It is an editing task that suggests Commons images for unillustrated Wikipedia articles. We have conducted many community discussions and tests. Then, we've decided to build a first prototype. We'll first deploy it only to our pilot Wikipedias, to learn whether newcomers can be successful with the task. The project page contains links to interactive prototypes. We are very interested to hear your thoughts on this idea as we build and test the early versions. These prototypes have already been tested by newcomers, in English and Spanish.

    News for mentors

    • The Mentor dashboard is available at our pilot wikis: Arabic, Czech, and Bengali Wikipedias. It will soon be available at a few more volunteering wikis, as a test. [1]
    • At wikis where the mentor dashboard is deployed, a new filter is available for mentors. Mentors can monitor their mentees' activity in Watchlist and RecentChanges, so they can help support their mentees' work. For privacy reasons, this filter can't be accessed by someone else than the mentor itself. This filter only filters mentees assigned to the mentor. This filter is not visible for people who are not listed as mentors [2]

    Community configuration

    • Communities now have the ability to configure how Growth features behave on their own wikis. At Special:EditGrowthConfig, community members can add a list of volunteer mentors, alter the templates used for suggested edits, update help links, and more. This special page is editable by administrators and interface admins.

    Scaling

    • We are proud to announce that all Wikipedias now have the Growth features! Thank you to all the community members who helped the team build the features and bring them to their wikis. The only exception is Chinese Wikipedia (zh), for technical reasons. [3]
    • The wikis that have Growth features deployed have been part of A/B testing since deployment, in which some newcomers did not receive the new features. Now, all of the newcomers on 280 of the smallest of those Wikipedias have the features. [4][5]
    • A test is undergoing at English Wikipedia: 25% of newcomers receive the Growth features. The results from this test will be part of a discussion of how to proceed on that wiki.
    • Now that Growth features are available at Wikipedia, the Growth team considers to extend them to other projects. Some Wikisource users have expressed some interest in getting Growth features. There is currently a discussion about implementing them on Wikisource.

    News for communities

    • Do you have questions about the Growth features? This translatable FAQ contains answers to the most common questions about the Growth team work.
    • The Growth features were recently used in a test amongst Latin American donors to give donors the opportunity to learn to edit. You can see the results here.
    • Interface translations are important for newcomers. Please help for your language, by translating or copyediting interface translations for the Growth features.
    • Help:GettingStarted was a feature developed in 2013, which directed newcomers to articles that needed editing. We recently removed this feature from all wikis, because it has been replaced by the Growth features.

    WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

    The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

    1. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) with 5072 points
    2. England Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 3276 points
    3. Rwanda Amakuru (submissions) with 3197 points
    4. New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) with 1611 points
    5. Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1571 points
    6. Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 1420 points
    7. Hog Farm (submissions) with 1043 points
    8. Republic of Venice Bloom6132 (submissions) with 528 points

    All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

    Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

    If you have views on whether the rules or scoring need adjustment for next year's contest, please comment on the WikiCup talk page. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January.     How we will see unregistered users

    Hi!

    You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

    When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

    Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

    If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

    We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Dedicated articles on Wikipedia require significant coverage in multiple reliable, independent sources. (?) In this case, the discussion participants said the topic's sources did not meet this standard. Those pages I've linked describe the standard and eligible sources in greater depth.     Hi @Czar, Thank you for providing the link to the decision, sad to read it though. At this point I'm not sure about moving onto another topic. I had latched onto that one and helped improve it since about 2007 or so. I would probably say I had been responsible for more than 50% of the content, and probably the majority of the updates since 2007, even though I have not lived in that metro area for 30 years. I may go to the university library when I visit and pull references from the daily newspaper articles on the league. It was regularly covered with a minimum of one article per week for quite a long time. With the decline of print journalism, the daily in that metro area has suffered major decline even though population has grown significantly. Newspaper content is about a quarter of the size it used to be.Pp99g 5:06, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

I hear you on the decline of print journalism but on the upside, local libraries tend to carry subscriptions to local paper archives and we also have a series of subscriptions available (for free) to Wikipedia editors who meet a certain level of editing activity.     I have followed with interest some of your contributions. Kafka's Prayer is one I particularly enjoyed. Is your focus more on anarchism or critical theory? I would eventually like to work on some articles, but presently don't have the time to improve/create ones like Minority (philosophy), Kafka: Towards a Minor Literature, Body without organs. Just wondering what the scope of your interests are, and if you have an interest in Deleuze. Maybe a future project together if you do, but no worries either way.     Hi @Urve, when I was writing that one, I wondered who would read it (besides bots) so that's heartwarming to hear! My focus is more on anarchism and books than critical theory in specific, with the Kafka book as part of a larger Paul Goodman series. Somewhere in my pile of drafts I have an old one on Bourdieu's Distinction that was pretty good but... complicated. Around that time I joined the John Searle school of French theory. So while a part of me would love to unpack Capitalism and Schizophrenia for a general audience if only for the challenge, I'm fully aware that it's an exercise in futility. (Not to mention that the level of effort to write a decent article on a sociological subject absolutely dwarfs the effort it takes to write an article from contemporary news sources.) The thought of searching for French-language reviews from the 1970s is horrifying and thrilling at once. But I find myself more often doing just that. czar 07:06, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's hard, because many of the essential things D&G talk about (the egg example, which IMO is vital to understanding it, and helpful for lay readers) are just referenced in secondary sources, not explained in considerable depth.     About Special:diff/1067340148, I'm genuinely not sure what the category is used for, looking through Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Bibliographies/archive, it's only been used 11 times last year, about half of them seems to be about individuals and a smaller portion about actual bibliographies. Starting to think that maybe a merge with Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/People might be needed, thoughts? Justiyaya 04:06, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Justiyaya, I assume it's for book/bibliography-related articles, though I can see why it's likely few would pass through AfD when there aren't that many in total. If anything, I think the action would be to retire it rather than merge it into People (where it wouldn't belong). But it's also not harmful to leave it as is, apart from the occasional confusion between Biography and Bibliography. Come to think of it, the Bibliography delsort (via Wikipedia:WikiProject Bibliographies/Article alerts) is how I found the discussion in question! czar 04:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Thanks for taking a look at my edits to the Chomsky page and the need to cite non-web interviews. I am still new to all of this :)

    I am curious is this a standard throughout the whole of Wikipedia? Some of the information I put in there I think was novel and the interviewer has written for the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.     I am texting you because I want to know the policy on politicians. If a politician is one of two primary politicians for US Congress in 2022. who has had articles written about him with all large state papers in past elections, does that make this candidate notable?

    Debate on military funding's influence on Noam's thought

    Hi, Could you advise me how to rewrite this so it is seen as acceptable:

    Chomsky has been open about who employed him at this time, saying “[MIT] was a Pentagon-based university. And I was at a military-funded lab."[1] What effect this had on his linguistic and political ideas has been debated in Open Democracy and the London Review of Books.[2]

    Really sorry, but I'm not clear what is wrong. The debate at Open Democracy consisted of 10 contributions from Frederick Newmeyer, Randy Allen Harris, Chris Knight, Les Levidow, David Golumbia, Peter Jones, and Wolfgang Sperlich. The debate was all about the extent to which "Pentagon affiliation" had an effect on Chomsky's politics and linguistics. A similar debate occurred with Hilary Rose (sociologist), Chomsky and others in the London Review of Books and the debate continued in and around a UCL conference and the publication of the book: "The Responsibility of Intellectuals: Reflections by Noam Chomsky and Others After 50 Years (Nick Allott, Chris Knight, Neil Smith (linguist))". The debate also occurred in several online interviews, various book reviews and the Chronicle Of Higher Education.

    Is it not relevant to say, in two short sentences, that this debate occurred in the section concerning this crucial period of Noam's academic career: 'Early career: 1955–1966'? If so, how should it be described?

    Thanks for the heads up regarding primary sources. It was a concern of mine that I had already tried to minimize, nevertheless I've simplified the draft further. At the moment draft only has three references to Ran's blog itself (about page which contains self-described political views, the original link to "How to Drop Out", and a miscellaneous about page which contains his birthplace). The other eight sources are secondary sources so my intuition is that it'll be appropriate to remove the template message.     WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

    And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

    • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
    • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
    • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
    • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
    • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
    • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
    • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

    These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

    Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

    Saffron Barker afd/redirect

    Hi, I’d like to ask you about the afd you closed for Saffron Barker, please. I apologise, because I’m new to editing Wikipedia, but am attempting to read the advice and follow the rules, it just gets a little confusing :) I believe that there wasn’t really enough discussion of her significance for there to justifiably considered a consensus. That, along with her further appearances in mainstream media has prompted me to attempt to get the redirect removed and the article reinstated. I’m not really sure how to go about that. I was hoping you could help, please? The advice on the deletion review page says to contact the closer of the afd in the first place- so, here I am.     Archival research and WP:OR

    You pulled most of the maybe-OR from Panteleimon Belochub when you removed the unsourced and unreliable-source stuff, but the "early life" and "WWI" sections are still mostly attributed to archival sources. I thought that was a no-go on Wikipedia? Or is this example fine because it's simple factual things like birth and death dates? (Though I suppose in this particular case there is an additional WP:V complication, since the State Archives of Donetsk Region may be some of the most inaccessible papers on earth right now...) -- asilvering (talk) 06:46, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Growth Newsletter #20

    Welcome to the twentieth newsletter from the Growth team!

    The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in Wikimedia projects.

    Suggested edits

    As of February, 300,000 suggested edits have been completed since the feature was first deployed in December 2019.

    Add a link is the team's first structured task, deployed in May 2021. It has improved outcomes for newcomers. The team is now working on a second iteration based on community feedback and data analysis. Improvements will include: improved algorithmic suggestions, guardrails to prevent too many similar links to be added, and clearer encouragement for users to continue making edits. After adding these improvements, we will deploy this task to more Wikipedias.

    Add an image is the second structured task built by our team. It was deployed in November 2021 to four pilot Wikipedias. This is a more challenging task for newcomers. However, it adds more value to articles (so far, over 1,000 images have been added). We are currently learning from communities and from the data on what is working well and what needs improvements. The project page contains links to interactive prototypes. We are very interested to hear your thoughts on this idea as we build and test the early versions. We will soon deploy this task to more Wikipedias as a test.

    "Add a link" and "Add an image" now both have a limitation on how many of these tasks newcomers can do per day. It is meant to discourage careless newcomers from making too many problematic edits.

    Positive reinforcement

    Over the last two years, the Growth team has focused on building suggested edits: easy tasks for newcomers to start with. We have learned with this experience that these tasks help many newcomers to make their first edits. Now, the team is starting a new project: "positive reinforcement". Its goal is to make newcomers proud of their editing and to make them want to come back for more of them. With the positive reinforcement project, we are considering three kinds of features:

    • Impact stats: give newcomers the ability to see how many people read the articles they edit.
    • Leveling up: encourage newcomers to progress from easier tasks to harder tasks.
    • Personalized praise: encourage mentors and other editors to "thank" and award newcomers for good work.

    This project is just beginning, and we hope for community thoughts on the direction. We know that things can wrong if we offer the wrong incentives to newcomers, so we want to be careful. Please visit the talk page to help guide the project!

    News for mentors

    • The mentor dashboard is available at all wikis. It helps mentors see who their mentees are and keep track of their activity. It is automatically activated where a list of mentors has been created. If you need assistance to create a list of mentors, please contact us.
    • The mentor dashboard has a new module: settings. It is now possible for mentors to define their status (active or away). They can specify the volume of questions they want to receive, and they can claim mentees in an easier way. It is also possible for mentors to quit, which will automatically reassign their mentees to other mentors.
    • We are working on an ability for a mentee to opt-out (and back in) to having a mentor.
    • Previously, in the table that displays mentees activity, the filters displayed all mentees, even the ones with zero edits or lots of edits. We have changed this so that only mentees with between 1 and 500 edits are visible by default. Mentors can change this value in their filters.
    • We are currently working on a special page for mentors to sign-up.

    Some wikis have created userboxes that mentors can display on the user pages. If your wiki has one, please link it to Wikidata!

    Scaling

    Previously, at most Wikipedias, only 80% of newcomers were getting the Growth features. This was done for experimentation, to have a control group. We have changed this setting. Now 100% of new accounts at all Wikipedias get the Growth features (except a few, kept as test wikis). We invite communities to update their onboarding documentation and tutorials. Please include the Growth features in it. To help you, we have created an help page that can be translated and adapted to your wiki.

    Anarchist FAQ

    I didn't get to reply to you before the AfD was closed, but if I had I would've clarified that my hope was that a draft would allow for the possibility of a viable merge target being created, rather than new sources being found that would indicate notability. And I would have asked – so may as well ask now – what your thoughts are on the two possible as-yet-nonexistent targets I mentioned (Iain McKay and anarchism and the internet), and whether any others come to mind. I think the latter's probably a safer bet, and some sources definitely exist (Atton 1996, Owens and Palmer 2003, some of Franks 2006), but it's the sort of thing that would take me years to actually put together.     Hi @Arms & Hearts, thanks for the follow-up. Would you have sources for McKay? I didn't have significant coverage last time I checked, hence the redirect. And what would be the scope of anarchism and the Internet? The merge target I had been envisioning was a section on introductions to anarchism, of which the "FAQ" would certainly be a part.     No particular sources for McKay come to mind I'm afraid – articles on living writers aren't my forte but I think you're probably right that the coverage is insufficient. Hence why anarchism and the Internet's probably preferable, but I don't have much of a sense of what that would in involve either (at least without having had a proper look at the sources suggested above), or whether it really merits an article in its own right or would itself be better folded into issues in anarchism. So all rather vague, but I'll keep you posted. Introductions to anarchism is another interesting possibility – chapter 2 of Süreyya Evren Türkeli's thesis What is anarchism? While largely forgotten today, Goodman was namechecked in Annie Hall as a prevailing public intellectual of the American mid-century: Dutch uncle to the 1960s counterculture, philosopher of the New Left, and the country's most prominent living anarchist. Goodman's career consisted of revealing mystic truths about the need to live out one's own animal instinct and the larger society's unfulfilled duty in fostering those impulses. The May 1945 essays that became known as the May Pamphlet outline Goodman's application of Reichian psychological theory to anarchist politics in the interregnum between the social revolutionary class warfare of turn-of-the-century classical anarchism and the rise of personal politics-focused, late-20th century contemporary anarchism.     WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

    The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

    Our top scorers in round 2 were:

    1. New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
    2. Christmas Island AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
    3. Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
    4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
    5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
    6. United States Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
    7. England Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

    The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

    Local standard

    Hi Czar, Can you help illuminate for me the "local" objection being made in the Mo Karn deletion debate? I know WP:NPOL sets some parameters around notability of local elected officials, but I've not encountered before the demand that someone or something have greater than local-level coverage in reliable sources to meet notability.     Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mo Karn
    Hi @Tcr25, usually exclusively local coverage is an indicator that the subject has not been covered as noteworthy by wider press. For example, local activism is common but what makes it notable is its coverage by regional or national press. I.e., "5 Questions with a Foodie" is a human interest story, not evidence of the subject's noteworthiness ("Richmond's very own Food Not Bombs celebrity" is, one can only presume, tongue-in-cheek). But any discussion of specifics should continue at the AfD. My database searches had plenty of passing mentions from local press, but gluing those together to form an article would not do justice to the subject. czar 17:42, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not trying to litigate the specific question around Mo Karn here, I just want to make sure I'm understanding the logic and where it fits into WP policies, although I'm not completely convinced that WP:GNG requires regional or national coverage.     Hidden text on Paul Goodman

    I noticed that a few years ago you introduced a number of hidden text passages to Paul Goodman. Since hidden text often gets forgotten and abandoned, we are working to reduce instances of hidden text to short notes necessary to be perpetually maintained in the wikitext, such as cautions not to use disapproved wording. Eventually, this may become a bot task, in which more extensive hidden passages are automatically removed from the article to the talk page for discussion.     I have initiated a discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Lots and lots and lots of hidden text, focused primarily on long-abandoned hidden text—there are cases where some block of text in an article was hidden due to an editorial disagreement a decade or more ago, and apparently not revisited since. I have also proposed a bot request to catalogue instances of hidden text by size and age. Bear in mind that something could happen to any editor at any time, so I would ask you to think about what would become of this content and this article if you were no longer around. Perhaps a better way to handle it would be to create a subpage linked from the talk page?     My read on things is that Molly is indeed notable so on that basis sure she is eligible for a page. That said, I'm wondering if you contacted her before writing the article? I know this is something Molly does in her own work because as we both know there are pluses and minuses to having an article and not everyone wants one.     Thank you today for Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, introduced: "This article is the most complete resource on the web for the Japanese sequel to Nintendo's 1985 smash hit Super Mario Bros. Critics say the title is best known for its extreme difficulty, but I'd wager it's better known for being confused with Super Mario Bros. 2, a completely different game. The Lost Levels was so difficult as to convince Nintendo of America against releasing the title in North America (that's how the "lost levels" were lost, until its re-introduction to English-speaking regions in 1993). But despite The Lost Levels' cultural confinement, the game performed a fair amount of forecasting for the series: its sadistic poison mushroom power-ups and differentiated abilities for Luigi persisted into other series games, but perhaps more salient is how the game served as a precursor to the contemporary fan community that creates challenging (read: impossible) Mario levels for each other, as well as the speedrunning community that attempted not just to finish these sadistic challenges, but with prowess.

    Hi @Tokisaki Kurumi, glad to hear it! Which books—the ones in the bibliographies of those articles? The books with their own Wikipedia articles are the safest to not be contested additions but the Wikipedia way is to "be bold", add the books you feel fit the stated scope and if someone disagrees, they will say so and you will discuss.     WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

    The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

    • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
    • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
    • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

    Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

    New project: Positive reinforcement

    Design mockup of the Positive reinforcement module for mobile users. The new module is first a summary of the number of views and can be expanded to show stats, graphs, and other contribution information.

    • The Growth team started a new project: Positive reinforcement. We want newcomers to understand there is an interest in regularly editing Wikipedia, and we want to improve new editor retention.
    • We asked users from Arabic, Bangla, Czech and French Wikipedia about their feedback. Some people participated at mediawiki.org as well.
    • We summarized the initial feedback gathered from these community discussions, along with how we plan to iterate based on that feedback.
    • The first Positive Reinforcement idea is a redesign of the impact module: incorporating stats, graphs, and other contribution information. This idea received the widest support, and we plan to start our work based on the design illustrated on the side.

    Suggested edits

    • Selecting topics ― We have created an "AND" filter to the list of topics at Special:Homepage. This way, newcomers can decide to select very specific topics ("Transportation" AND "Asia") or to have a broader selection ("Transportation" OR "Asia"). At the moment this feature is tested at pilot wikis.
    • Changes for Add a link ― We have built several improvements that came from community discussion and from data analysis. They will be available soon at the wikis.
      • Algorithm improvements ― The algorithm now avoids recommending links in sections that usually don't have links and for first names. Also, it now limits each article to only having three link suggestions by default (limited to the highest accuracy suggestions of all the available ones in the article).
      • User experience improvements ― We added a confirmation dialog when a user exits out of suggestion mode prior to making changes. We also improved post-edit dialog experience and allow newcomers to browse through task suggestions from the post-edit dialog.
      • Community configuration ― We allow communities to set a maximum number of links per article via Special:EditGrowthConfig.
      • Future change for Add a link feature ― We will suggest underlinked articles in priority. [8]
    • Patrolling suggested edits ― Some users at Arabic Wikipedia, Spanish Wikipedia, and Russian Wikipedia told us that "Add a link" and "Add an image" edits can be challenging to patrol. We are now brainstorming improvements to help address this challenge. We have already some ideas and we started some work to address this challenge. If you have any thoughts to add about the challenges of reviewing these tasks or how we should improve these tasks further, please let us know, in any language.

    Community configuration

    Communities can configure how the features work, using Special:EditGrowthConfig.

    • An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
    • An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.

    Technical news

    • The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
    • Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)

    • The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.

    Miscellaneous

    • You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.
    • Wikimania 2022 is taking place virtually from 11 August to 14 August. The schedule for wikimania is listed here. There are also a number of in-person events associated with Wikimania around the world.

    You are invited to join the local Wikimedia NYC community for its flagship event to be held all-day on Saturday August 13, 2022 at the Queens Museum, in the context of the 1939/1964 fairgrounds at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. There will also be smaller sessions for much of August 12-14 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) as hybrid local gatherings for the global online conference Wikimania 2022.

    Blocking from it.wiki filter

    Certainly it is possible to have the filter act in two steps, first the warning then the blocking, unfortunately the vandalism found was too much and too fast and we opted for immediate blocking. The problem is the continuous substitution of terms and expressions from Russian/Ukrainian and vice versa. I would have explained better by email but I see that is not possible. For now I only made a small change by reducing the blocking time and reported the issue to my sysop colleagues who created the filter. Elwood (talk) 23:31, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Elwood, I was just blocked a second time for attempting a simpler (single sentence) version of the edit I mentioned in w:it:Wikipedia:Richieste agli amministratori/Richieste correnti#Blocco filtro anti abusi: "erunda durnizi" su Territorio Libero. Is there any way to exempt me from the bot or should I give up on it? For context, here is the diff the edit I would like to eventually make, and I had only attempted to edit the first sentence of the first paragraph (the one sentence) from that diff when I was just blocked a second time.     Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    When I asked a question at the Teahouse, you responded (with other editors) that some other assassinators' articles may be worth redirecting. So, is redirecting some articles involving the conspirators worth it? Or just keep it the way it is and improve it with more sources/references? Sarrail (talk) 17:42, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi @Sarrail, every article topic is judged on its own merits so it really depends how much has been written about each individual. I believe someone mentioned that if all that can be written about an individual is that they participated in the assassination and later had a disease, then that would be good cause to redirect that person's name to the article about the assassination. czar 17:47, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Well, it depends. Since every article is judged on its own merits, before redirecting an article, I recommend searching book and academic databases for articles on the topic. Since the subject is Serbian, there might be Serbian articles that just aren't as prominent in English-language search engines. Sometimes that research is worth sharing on the talk page for consideration. Other times the article can be redirected with an explanation of the lack of sourcing in the edit's edit summary. I wouldn't know about the other articles without taking a systematic look through them. With a cursory search on Grabež, yes, looks okay to redirect, given no major subject heading or monograph in WorldCat. czar 18:06, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    The other assassinators were Cvjetko Popovic, Muhamed Mehmedbasic, Nedeljko Cabrinovic, Vaso Cubrilovic, and Danilo Ilic.     @Sarrail, it'd be a significant project to investigate the sourcing of each, especially considering what very well may exist in offline, Serbian books.     • An arbitration case regarding Conduct in deletion-related editing has been closed. The Arbitration Committee passed a remedy as part of the final decision to create a request for comment (RfC) on how to handle mass nominations at Articles for Deletion (AfD).
    • The arbitration case request Jonathunder has been automatically closed after a 6 month suspension of the case.

    Miscellaneous

    • The new pages patrol (NPP) team has prepared an appeal to the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) for assistance with addressing Page Curation bugs and requested features. You are encouraged to read the open letter before it is sent, and if you support it, consider signing it. It is not a discussion, just a signature will suffice.
    • Voting for candidates for the Wikimedia Board of Trustees is open until 6 September.

    The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

    At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

    Restoring a deleted page

    I know it was deleted but might there be a chance of restoring the page for Ling Tai? I have found better sources (such as newspapers regarding her childhood).     What I have are from Newspapers.com (you have to be a member to view).
    • Planned return to Hong Kong - 10 years ago, Ruislip and Northwood Gazette, 13 June 1990 (pg.8) plus other local newspapers that day
    • Theatre (first two: Aladdin pantomimes) - "The Stage", 10 January 1985 (pg.27); The Stage, 17 October 1985 (pg.3); Theatricalia
    Hopefully, these will be acceptable. Perhaps the page could be brought back briefly so improvements with these references can be used. Some people who have had pages on Wikipedia for years don't have any sources in comparison.Silurian25 (talk) 11:50, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Viewing those sources, (1) The Sunday People does not appear to be a reliable, encyclopedic source, as a tabloid, (2) the Gazette appears to be a single sentence mention, and (3) is a database listing so we're not sure what's in it. I can say on its face that this wouldn't be enough to overturn the existing consensus. I can, however, restore the article to draft status for you to find further sources (if you are confident more exist) and submit through the Articles for Creation process, but you shouldn't restore that article until someone has reviewed its contents.     Newcomers tasks reach the 500,000 edits milestone — more data publicly available

    As of the last week of June 2022, the newcomers of the world have completed over 500,000 newcomer tasks. In other words, newcomers have made over half a million Wikipedia edits via Growth’s “Suggested Edits” module.

    • About 30% of those edits were completed on mobile devices.
    • Usage continues to increase; in June 2022 almost 50,000 newcomer tasks were completed.

    We have added some new data to Grafana. You can now check the number of edits and reverts by task types, or the number of questions asked to mentors. You can filter the data by wiki.

    Ongoing projects and explorations

    The new impact module is part of the Positive Reinforcement project. The image displays the mockup for mobile we used for user testing.

    We are continuing our work on our new project, Positive Reinforcement. User testing of initial Positive Reinforcement designs was just completed. Interviews were conducted in Arabic, English, and Spanish. The outcome has been published on the Positive Reinforcement page. We are now utilizing user testing feedback along with prior community feedback to iterate and improve designs.

    We are exploring the idea of a Copy Edit structured task. We have tested copy edits in Wikipedia articles for arwiki, bnwiki, cswiki, eswiki (Growth pilot-wikis) and enwiki with two different methods: LanguageTool and Hunspell. We will share more details here and on the associated Copy Edit page once the evaluation is complete.

    Add an image was utilized at GLAM events in Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. For an overview of what was learned from these events, read: #1Pic1Article I: how Latin American heritage experts added images to Wikipedia (in English).

    Experiments analysis

    Add a Link Experiment Analysis has been published. The most important points are:

    • Newcomers who get the Add a Link structured task are more likely to be activated (i.e. make a constructive first article edit).
    • They are also more likely to be retained (i.e. come back and make another constructive article edit on a different day).
    • The feature also increases edit volume (i.e. the number of constructive edits made across the first couple weeks), while at the same time improving edit quality (i.e. the likelihood that the newcomer's edits aren't reverted).

    Newcomer task edit type analysis has been published.

    • Communities had expressed concern that newcomers whose initial edits were structured tasks wouldn’t go on to learn how to complete more difficult tasks. The Growth team data scientist conducted a Newcomer task edit type analysis to see if this was indeed the case.
    • Results from analysis indicate that this likely isn’t a significant concern. More than 70% of users who start with the easy task "Add a link" also make another task type. Read the full analysis and methodology here.

    News for mentors

    A new system for the mentors list

    The configuration of the mentors list will change over the next weeks. In the future, mentors will sign up, edit their mentor description and quit using Special:MentorDashboard. This new system will make the development of new features for mentors much easier.

    At the moment, the mentor list is a simple page anyone can edit, unless it’s protected. With the new page, mentors will be able to edit only their own description, while administrators will be able to edit the entire mentors' list if needed.

    The deployment will happen first at the pilot wikis, then at all wikis. Existing lists of mentors will be automatically converted, no action will be needed from the mentors. [11][12]

    Mentors will be informed about the next steps soon, by a message posted on the talk page of existing Mentor lists.

    A tip for mentors

    Did you know that mentors can filter their mentees' changes at Special:MentorDashboard (and star the ones that require attention)? This feature helps to keep an eye on newcomers' edits, helping mentors to fix minor details, and encourage them if necessary.

    And did you know that mentors have special filters to highlight their mentees' edits at Special:RecentChanges? Look for the following filters in RecentChanges: Your starred mentees, Your unstarred mentees.

    Other improvements

    Some improvements will be made to the mentor dashboard in the coming weeks:

    • While we now offer some options for mentors to take a break, the option to quit mentoring was not easy to find. This will be improved. [13]
    • Mentors at wikis using FlaggedRevisions will have a way to discover their mentees' pending edits. [14]
    • Dashboard discovery for new mentors will be improved. [15]

    Recent changes and fixed bugs

    • We moved to a new Image Suggestions API. This new API will allow us to deploy Add an Image to more wikis. [16]
    • Starting September 19, a few more wikis now offer Add an image to newcomers. These wikis are Greek Wikipedia, Polish Wikipedia, Chinese Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia. [17]
    • Add an image has been disabled for a few days due to technical issue. "Add an image" added a blank line instead of an image. This has been fixed. [18]
    • In order to know if Special:EditGrowthConfig is used by communities, we now instrument page loads and saves of configuration. [19]

    I realize this isn't the place to discuss content on the Chomsky page but I think your revert may have been mistaken. I could be mistaken but as far as I can tell the "see also" section isn't just a list of works by Chomsky nor is it supposed to be, as demonstrated by the current content and by the MOS.     That was my error—I thought it was added the Selected bibliography section, not See also, per the prior edit. This said, when a proposed edit is reverted as controversial, the general Wikipedia practice is to start a discussion on the article's talk page to find consensus.     Hello! I wanted to thank you belatedly for your invitation to explore WP:WikiProject Anarchism. I think my contributions in this area would be occasional at best, but have been very impressed with how organized the WikiProject is compared to most. On that note, I have a couple of requests:

    • Might be worthing checking the embedded links in the "Anarchism" welcome message moving forward (if it hasn't been updated already). At least one of them – the one for "adopting a cleanup category" – was broken and should point to here instead of there (I think).
    • Could you please send an Anarchism project welcome message to the following user: Janosabel? Apparently he is quite keen on following the project discussions, and was impressed when I mentioned it was the very first WikiProject invitation I received as a new editor on WP last year.
    • If/when you have time, could you please have a read of Seven Days (magazine)? The magazine was started as an anti-establishment news magazine of the American Left in the 1970s by a group of editors including David Dellinger. Most people associate Dellinger with socialism but in his later years he leaned more anarchist, and I've taken great pains to make sure we don't automatically label Seven Days as "socialist" (or "anarchist" for that matter) unless there are reliable secondary sources that say so. For now the label "anti-establishment" is definitely sourced; in any case, they aspired to appeal to the American Left as a whole so probably resisted being pigeonholed either way. Anyway interested in any feedback or suggestions you may have on the article. Thanks in advance!

    Nice work on Seven Days! I'm familiar with Dellinger from his work with Paul Goodman, both Liberation (magazine) and the press in Dellinger's tiny NJ commune that printed (and crowdfunded) what Goodman contended was his best work.     Well, definitely not a big deal, but since you asked, I'll just say the article is slightly inaccurate in that I don't live in Portland currently. However, I'm not aware of any sources verifying my current location. There are sources published from 2013 to 2021 which confirm my residence in Portland at the time, so the article could be updated to say I "lived in Portland as of 2013–2021" or similar, but perhaps this is a minor thing to worry about. I was just planning to wait until a source confirmed my new location before submitting a request to update the entry. I'll let you decide if changes are necessary.     Sorry I am terrible at using the Wikipedia interface but I'm a historian v much interested in Anarchism. I keep meaning to update things on Wikipedia but find the ui on this site v difficult to use. I promise I am not v old haha, not that that matters. Anyway, I often have a lot of information with good sources. Would you be interested at all on collaborating on stuff like this? I can provide a lot of the info and you can help with the Wikipedia side? I am a historian tho and not v knowledgeable of the broader philosophy of Anarchism or its modern theory especially.

    The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

    Welcome to the twenty-third newsletter from the Growth team!

    Highlights

    Positive reinforcement: an improved impact module to test

    The goal of the Growth team is to encourage newcomers to try editing for the first time, and encourage them to keep editing. We want to increase newcomers' motivation by showing them how impactful their edits are.

    Newcomers have access to an impact module; you can find yours at Special:Impact. The revised impact module provides new editors with more context about their impact. It will display the number of edits, the number of thanks received, the last time they edited, the number of consecutive days they edited, and the number of views for the articles they edited.

    This module will soon be available at our pilot wikis starting December 1. You can already test this new module at Beta Wikipedia. For safety reasons, do not use your regular account and password at Beta wiki. Create a new, specific account for this wiki, with a different password.

    Structured tasks: improvements based on patroller feedback

    After the deployment of Structured tasks, we received feedback from various communities regarding how patrollers of recent changes were feeling overwhelmed by an increase in edits to check, and how some edits were poor quality or of poor relevance.

    We made several improvements based on the feedback we received. Several points of improvement have already been addressed:

    • Patroller fatigue:
      • By default, newcomers can complete up to 25 "add a link" tasks and 25 "add an image" tasks per day. If patrollers are overburdened, each community can use Special:EditGrowthConfig to lower that limit.
    • Quality of edits: what constitutes a "quality edit" is not a well defined concept. We initiated a discussion and summarized our findings. We also worked on the following improvements:
      • Add a Link
        • Underlinked articles are now prioritized, so it's less likely that newcomers are adding links to articles that are already have a lot of links.
        • The confidence score was increased, so suggestions are more likely to be accurate.
        • The default number of suggested links per article has been lowered to 3. This can be changed at Special:EditGrowthConfig. Communities can also exclude articles containing certain templates or categories from being suggested.
      • Add an Image
        • Lists will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions.
        • Disambiguation pages will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions.
        • We have many further improvements we plan to make to "add an image" in early 2023. [20]

    The Positive Reinforcement project will also address some of the concerns around encouraging newcomers to progress to higher value edits. The Growth team will soon work on strategies geared at "Leveling up" newcomers so they progress from easy to more difficult tasks.

    Recent changes

    • All Wikipedias now have the same onboarding experience. Previously, at a few wikis, 20% of new accounts didn't get the Growth features when they created their account. These 20% of new accounts were used as a control group, in order to know if the Growth features were changing newcomers' behavior. Experiments have shown that Growth features improve activation and retention, and as we want to provide the same onboarding experience at all Wikipedias, we have decided to remove the control groups. We will utilize control groups when testing new features, and German Wikipedia keeps a control group at their request. [21]
    • The quality score for "add a link" suggestions will change. We will suggest less links for each article, but they will be more accurate. We will first deploy it at our pilot wikis, and then to all other wikis where this feature is available. [22][23]
    • Growth's features FAQ has been updated and expanded. This page centralizes all the information about Growth features. We invite you to read it, and, if you can, to translate it.

    News for mentors

    • All Wikipedias can now setup and manage a mentorship program in an easier way.
      • We changed the process to make it more reliable, easier to improve and easier to use.
      • Wikipedias where mentorship hasn't been enabled yet can turn mentorship on following a new process. When done, mentors can sign-up by visiting Special:MentorDashboard.
      • Wikipedias where the list of mentors already existed have been converted to the new system.
      • A new special page — Special:ManageMentors — now displays the list of mentors. This page can be transcluded on any other page. There are also new processes to signup as a mentor or to quit mentorship, and we improved community mentorship management.
    • The Mentor dashboard's "Your mentees" module will have a new footer, called "Recent changes by your mentees". This footer will include a link to Recent changes, where mentors can see only edits made by their own mentees. [24]

    • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget.     Pinging Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Matthew Kenslow participants @TomStar81, Robert C 571, ReaderofthePack, and GPL93 for your consideration.
    I wasn't involved in this discussion apart from judging its consensus but I can already tell from the URLs that most of these are press releases (PR). Wikipedia requires significant coverage in multiple reliable, independent sources (?) to warrant a dedicated article. Off the bat, it looks like these sources have the same issues with those listed in the deletion discussion, on which ReaderofthePack had elaborated on the article's talk page. Wikipedia cares about the quality and depth of the coverage, such that we can write an article without delving into original research from primary sources. Whether there are hundreds or thousands of press releases on this topic is immaterial.
    re: your "first and ... only article", on Wikipedia no one "owns" any content. Part of the nature of Wikipedia is that your contributions will be continually rewritten and removed, especially as you get started.     • I'm seeing a lot of fluff, but not a lot gold. Most of this only establishes that he exisits, not that he's done anything worthy of inclusion here (no Oscar award, or Tony, or Emmy, or Grammy, or Nobel Prize , or Election to the papacy, or declaration of a new nation as its leader, etc). To your credit, you've successfully managed to find plenty of sources that confirm he exists, but thats true of just about anyone. If I went digging I'd find enough information on myself to write an article, but yearbooks and newspaper quotes and those three times I happened to be in the background of pictures at important moments don't count for anything when trying to establish notability. What we need, if you will, is precious material: Anyone can dig a hole anywhere, but yours need to result in people finding gold, or oil, or fossils, or so forth. Without that, your hole is no more remarkable than anyone else's hole, save but to those of us who have the job of filling the holes so others don't fall in them.     • I remember this AfD - it was frustrating since there was coverage, but not really enough of the type that could help establish notability. It's really super difficult to establish notability nowadays on Wikipedia and honestly, it can feel discouraging when you see someone get famous for doing something silly, stupid, or outright dangerous, yet people who are doing great things don't get even a small percentage of their coverage. We can't really do anything to make up that difference, something that is sometimes really unfortunate. I've seen a lot of pages deleted on people who I felt deserved an article for the work they've done, but just didn't get that coverage. In the meantime what I recommend is looking for articles that need work - if you are interested in autism specific articles, there is a category for articles that need more expansion: Category:Autism stubs. Some of them may be articles that fail notability (and as such, would need to be nominated), but some of them are articles on topics that meet guidelines but need to be more fleshed out. There are a wide variety of topics in there, from people to organizations to films and so on. My only caution would be to exercise extra caution if the topic is health and medicine related, as those have a specific set of rules that must be followed.     YYYY categories

    When you create "Year in X" categories that are template-based and thus autogenerate their own parent categories through the template, such as Category:2024 video games, could you please also ensure that you take the time to also create any parent categories that don't exist yet, such as Category:2024 in video gaming, Category:Products introduced in 2024, Category:2024 software and Category:Games and sports introduced in 2024? Content can't be left sitting in redlinked categories, but since those are autogenerated by a template they're impossible to remove and can be resolved only by creating them -- so any time you create a template-generated category like that, you need to ensure that you also create any and all missing parent categories, so that that you're not making unnecessary cleanup work for other people by leaving any redlinked parent categories for Special:WantedCategories to pick up after the fact.     Wouldn't the better route be to have the template suppress showing those red categories if they don't exist?     Sparticist uprising -- "bloody week"

    I can't find any other source besides Schwartzwald that refer to the uprising as Bloody Week. There aren't any German hits on "blutige Woche" either, except for the Paris Commune, which is also where most of the English searches end up. I'm fairly familiar with the topic and the period through my reading and my translations from German Wikipedia articles, and I never saw any Bloody Week references while I was verifying sources and info. Because of that, I'd like to have your update reverted unless you have something else to back up the usage of the phrase. It's probably better left with the Paris Commune.

What's the connection between the Reichstag Bloodbath and the Sparticist uprising -- or for that matter to referring to the latter as the Bloody Week? And how would they clear up any confusion?     @Shushugah It belatedly came to me what you mean, and I agree that there's unlikely to be confusion, but for a different reason -- that I don't think Bloody Week is at all a common way to refer to the Sparticist uprising, so it's simply not likely to come up. I still know of only the one use of the phrase, and after reading p. 288 in Schwartzwald with its rather inflammatory wording (that I would flag in Wikipedia for its tone), I have question marks in my head about how reliable a source it is. So again, unless you know of another source or sources, I don't think the update / redirect add any value and should be reverted. Your thoughts on my main point about the phrase not being common?     Bloody week redux

    So have I figured this question out correctly? As part of a discussion on the use of semaine sanglante, the Révolte spartakiste de Berlin article was brought in because it has a single unsourced use of the phrase. That then led to the English Spartacist article, with the Schwartzkopf book – which isn't referenced by any other Wikipedia article – as the source for adding a bolded Bloody Week to it. That was where I stepped in as (quite possibly) the Wikipedia subject-matter expert on the Weimar Republic with the objection that one English language source and none in German isn't enough to raise Bloody Week to the level of a "synonym" for the Sparticist uprising. It simply isn't accurate and could be potentially misleading.

    I plan to remove the Bloody Week reference in the Sparticist uprising article by Monday unless there's some stronger supoort for it somewhere that I don't know of. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks. GHStPaulMN (talk) 12:42, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Newcomer experience projects

    The Growth team partnered with other WMF teams to conduct several experiments around increasing account creation and new editor retention. Results from four of these experiments are now available:

    Newcomer tasks

    • Several communities suggested improving "add a link", by suggesting underlinked articles first. We released this change to Growth pilot wikis. We will review the data and collect feedback before considering releasing it to more wikis. [26]
    • The deployment of the "add a link" to all Wikipedias is still in progress. Suggested links use a prediction model, which has to be trained. The deployments will resume after we finish training all models. [27]

    Mentorship

    • When someone wants to signup as a mentor, they are now informed if they don't meet the defined criteria. [28]
    • Workshop hosts asked us to have workshop attendees assigned to them. They can soon use a custom URL parameter. This way, workshop hosts will continue mentoring the event's attendees after the workshop. It will be available in February. [29]
    • Have you considered to help new editors on your wiki, by signing up to be a Mentor?

    WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

    So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

    • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
    • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
    • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
    • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
    • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

    The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

    These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

    I would like to nominate the amazing Czar to be Editor of the Week. This user is a long time editor and an admin to boot!! This is to recognize their instrumental work at WikiProject Anarchism and maintenance of the associated pages. Seriously, they do so much gnomish activity the project would hit a deadlock without them. Additionally, they have over 100 GA's and is always around to help others with their own GAs, asking for no recognition of their own. I believe they're a wonderful addition to the halls of EOTW and was genuinely floored when I didn't see the name already here. Czar generates a steady flow of high-quality FAs.
