Relax Dad. The new Cinco Midi File Organizer has already assigned each midi file to an UMRN (Unique Midi Routing Number).

Tom, you know those MIDI files aren't sorted!

The Cinco MIDI File Organizer has saved me so many times, what an invention! Thanks Cinco!

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw it! I had to look at the subreddit name!

      [–]chalks777 61 points62 points  (4 children)

why did you make some random words bold but not others?

      [–]midi_man[S] 72 points73 points  (2 children)

So someone would ask why I did it :)

some men aren't looking for anything logical. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn

Whew! Thanks for the clarity! sometimes I think files can contain patterns of byte data that may show up in other files when those files are calculated at a byte level. I'm presuming that's the case because I ran a bunch of these into my midi player and each one played! :D

            [–]dhjdhjhttps://gigperformer.com 3 points4 points  (0 children)

            Probably Barry Manilow songs😀

o_O interesting! I don't have an Antivirus on my linux box so I didn't run this through av; Maybe it's a false positive? I'm not sure how a midi file can run executable code but definitely don't use those files if you have any doubts! I did a humungous spider crawl and eliminated files that didn't match .mid .MID .midi .MIDI .pdf pattern then found every unique name with md5deep and tossed the files into a folder with the first character of each file as the destination file folder. Beyond that I didn't do any processing- I might find an AV on a windows box and see if I can replicate!! Good find though! I'm skeptical but it's worth checking into!

So - I'm not sure how relevant this is but the vulnerability was patched in all Windows systems (and only affects windows) on 1/9/2012; so, I'm thinking it's only an issue for unpatched XP and W7 systems that are running zero patches. I'm working on removing them from the parent file but in the mean time the threat surface will be very low! Good find sir !

I'm still saddened that Laura's MIDI Heaven and other midi sites that were extremely large back in the 90's and early 2k's are no longer around. So much content was probably lost from the internet that we'll never get back.

I cannot upvote this hard enough. I've witnessed the Internet (and before that many other social computing things, BBS'es, computer clubs, etc.) and the rise of Computing and it is a sad tale indeed that so much is lost to the ether in our Digital age.

I once had a huge collection of great sounds and sources of inspiration gleaned from Laura's and other MIDI archives, even ran my own little one for a while (samplelibrary.net), and now it all seems like distant dreams.

Anyway, as long as we have folks like midi_man around, and the spirit is kept alive, we can get some new stuff set up for the future.

For my part, having such a massive collection of MIDI is immensely useful. I shall now proceed to markov it all.

                Nice work.

Some of the oldest files in my home dir are old .mids from the mid-90s, mostly pulled from ftp & usenet about that time.

Do you want a list of checksums to see if I've got any uniques?

                [–]midi_man[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sounds excellent! Hit me up with a list in md5 or sha1 but tell me what type it is so I can compare :)

Spent the last hour trying to get a working link from that, failed. It will not allow me to download it unless I install a plugin, but despite every thing I do, Firefox refuses to install the plugin.

                [–]midi_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay! So I think this is due to an accessible memory limitation in Firefox and for the meantime the workaround is using an addon. If you do not want to install the plugin, use Google Chrome as it will download plugin-free. Opera (lol) is also supported without addon. IE: No such dice.

This is probably a super retarded question but how do I use these files. I use pro tools and I just downloaded all of these and opened the file and tried to drag one of the files into pro tools and it loaded it on a midi track and theres some notes in there but when i play it it doesn't make any sound

                  [–]hudonit 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Midi tells the computer what notes to play but says nothing about what sound to play. You have to assign a virtual instrument to the midi notes (piano etc)

                  [–]Jinjer_Ninjerhttps://soundcloud.com/oungugly/erykah 1 point2 points  (2 children)

thanks man I just wasn't sure because on the midi tracks theres no place to insert instrument plugins like there is on an audio track

                  [–]hudonit 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm not sure about machine but in pro tools you can buss a midi track into a virtual instrument

                  [–]farfletched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No bus needed :) we have "instrument" tracks now....ooooooooooo!

                  [–]tractorinballs -1 points0 points  (1 child)

so let me get this straight.....you have protools...but don't know what midi is....cart before the horse much?...that being said, lemme get that link to whatever pirated copy you're using.

                  [–]Jinjer_Ninjerhttps://soundcloud.com/oungugly/erykah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely knew what midi was I was more confused about how to route something like kontakt or battery into all the different track types in pro tools but i figured it out. My bad for not knowing everything about a major DAW two days after buying it :)

Midis are rad, they're like STEMs to a track but in digital form that allow you to place your own instruments ontop of for a very close reproduction of the audio with your 'own' instruments. Kontakt libraries are your friend here! :) a lot of the rock kits sound divine on the NI Kontakt kit Sparkle Drum

                    [–]JamesWjRose 0 points1 point  (5 children)

A MIDI file is the instructions that allow a synth to play the song. These are not files that contain audio, either a software synth or keyboard is needed to play these. (most soundcards have a software synth)

MIDI = Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It's been around for 30+ years (I'm old) and allows different devices (keyboards, synths, drums, computers, etc) to communicate.

Short answer: Yes you can bring a midi file into an editor (that supports midi) and edit it.

Longer version: MIDI has 16 channels. (today we'd call them tracks) A MIDI file COULD have a track for drums, one for percussion, one for guitar, etc. A MIDI file is not audio like a MP3 or WAV, it contains information that tells a synth what notes to play. So, for example; If you had a MIDI file that had drums and piano, you could select a different type of piano in your synth and it would play those same notes on a different type of instrument.

What editor are you using? This might help me find an example. For me I use Sony Acid (there is a free version as well)

                        Magix Music Maker 2014.

This is very much like Sony Acid (I found that app back in early 99) so just like any other track, a MIDI file can have 1 to 16 tracks. Each one of them can be an instrument, and I would bet that the editor will allow you to assign a track to different sounds (eg: A piano track could become a harpsicord, you could even change piano to drums)

However, software synths can be limited to the quality of sound they produce. A free synth is not likely to sound as good as a hardware synth.

Thank you very much. I've got a lot of fun ahead of me, it would seem. I really appreciate your breaking it down and using relative examples. A few years back I started wondering why people don't release midi files into the wild, but I see now I've been in the dark a long time...

                        Cheers

Has anyone separated these into single instruments for one song and inserted into a daw put a virtual instrument like superior drummer to make some kinda backing track to play along with?

                        [–]fuzzynyanko 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lots of MIDI editors have the capability to turn off tracks

I wanted to know if anyone ran vst instruments through the midi data to get better sounding backing tracks

Hey man, this is great! Thanks alot for doing this!

As somebody who is really into Synthesia, this is like an ultimate dream come true.

My favorite soundfront (.sf) for MIDI is SGM: it makes most things sound awesome.

Then you can set CoolSoftVirtualMIDISynth as your default MIDI program, load the soundfont in there, open Winamp and drag the whole song folder in.

TIL winamp handles a 130,000 song playlist surprisingly quickly!

Aye! It's a conspiracy! There's a few online but they're mostly either assy or behind paywall- I'll see if I can get at some decent ones in a 2.0 release :)

You can use Melodo to manage your midis in the cloud, play them in any DAW or with any other VST

This is freaking amazing. You sir are a saint.

I love loading these in fruity loops and putting funny ass vibrato and pitch bendy shit on the VSTis

                          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'm confused. I have many midi files already, high enough quality ones, that aren't in here. freemidi.org is where most of these ones are from. Care to comment?

Also, anyone know of any way at all to get around a paywall?I know that that's a tall order, but there's some arsehole things to find that I know exist but... Gah.

                          Still, love the effort.

Edit: I'm an idiot. Who thought that a file could have a different name? I certainly didn't...

Second edit: No, there are definitely a few things. Zac Brown Band, for instance.

Allow me to be the dumb person, but are these free for commercial use?

                          [–]midi_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a hodge podge of them, so YMMV - when in doubt, look around with the file name you have and see if you can ID which website's parent it came from and look at their use policy. Just about all of them have each other's file sets so I can't imagine they have any sort of enforceability due to that. I would never sell these or put them behind advertisements to stay on the safe side but if you pull a melody from a Bach midi from 15 years ago for a hip-hop remix, I'm not sure who exactly is hauling you to court and for what reason but I doubt it would occur to be honest.

sorry for the noob question but it shows on the page "100%" downloaded. however, nothing happens and its not showing up in my dowloads folder like anything else typically would. any suggestions?

So this is how Mega works! it'll completely download it in your Browser first, then render those files into something in your downloads folder, give it a few minutes and if it doesn't work; try chrome!

Anyone know how to listen to MIDI files on OSX Yosemite?

                          [–]Knute5 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Quicktime 7 had GM midi built in. Still works in Yosemite. And Garageband should import and play back General Midi files.

                          [–]firegecko5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is closer to the answer I was looking for. Thanks!

                          [–]jrkirby 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Any DAW should be able to do it for you. You can also use Timidity, probably a bunch of other options too.

                          [–]firegecko5 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I know any DAW can play it. What I meant was, is there any browser that can simply play them, or a way to get Finder to preview with playback? I just want to be able to preview files quickly like I could pre-Mavericks.

http://www.synthesiagame.com/ this is a really useful replayer; I'm not sure if the demo version has all the instruments as the full but it'll play most things well. also it's main function is like DDR for piano but it teaches you
