Last two have been blocked and are DUCK socks of each other, but all of these have been created within four minutes, and additional sleepers might exist. 1234qwer1234qwer4 18:26, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • CheckUser requested and endorsed by clerk to check for others, autoconfirmed gaming to commit page-move vandalism suggests this isn't their first rodeo. Thanks, Spicy (talk) 01:17, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Confirmed, unsurprisingly. No clear others or priors visible, sorry. --Blablubbs (talk) 14:15, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks. Closing, without tags due to the trolling and general obviousness. Spicy (talk) 13:13, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

This user keeps making obvious vandalism--primarily to the article Frodo Baggins, although occasionally vandalizes a few other targets. Enjoys editing the info box in Frodo's article to show Michael Scott's catchphrase "That what she said!" [1] [2] [3] and the original at [4]. Occasionally edits page to display picture of Steve Carrell [5]. Also said something immature in AIV, which makes me think they have been around these parts even before today [6]. Usernames for the most part refer to erotic parts of the body and/or bodily functions. Would ideally like CheckUser to figure out if there is a larger history/sleepers and to try IP block. Thebirdlover (talk) 06:42, 31 March 2024 (UTC), last edited 05:40, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Found additional accounts dating back to 2023, think they might be stale but just adding to show the longer-term track record. Admits modus operandi in [7]. Says that they plan to create more socks in the future since they were not unblocked [8]. --Thebirdlover (talk) 05:40, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

One of the socks edited this page [9] which makes me feel like I did something right since it's obviously getting to them. Also claimed to be socking for four years and to be doing so on public networks [10]. Did not think they would discover this page this quickly, but congrats for doing so /s. In any case, I find it hilarious and know any attention-seeking edit will be reverted by responsible editors so you aren't offending me at all. I'm generally pretty laid back, just like researching into vandalism and vandal patterns so this has been a field day for me. --Thebirdlover (talk) 11:56, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I do not agree with the clerk comment. CensoredScribe seems to have a different mo, in my opinion. This user is more outwardly malicious/trollish compared to CensoredScribe and doesn't add new categories, plus he makes user talk page comments which is something CensoredScribe never does and seems to have a better idea of the inner workings of Wikipedia. This user also has a special fixation on Lord of the Rings articles and referencing the Office, which is something CensoredScribe is not into. Plus the user said they have only been around for 4 years (as much as we are willing to believe him) and CensoredScribe has been for at least 10. I am willing to believe that this user is part of a more established group of socks, but I do not believe CensoredScribe suddenly became cartoonishly over the top. --Thebirdlover (talk) 15:13, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

He navigated past the strict block, found three more accounts blocked today. I also found four other IP Addresses from 2023, the last two of which seem to be used legitimately now. Also he is apparently playing off of my username so add really bad impersonation into the mix now. --Thebirdlover (talk) 21:38, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Another two usernames from 2023, oh my goodness I feel like I am unearthing a mine field.----Thebirdlover (talk) 23:03, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thebirdlover makes some good points (I'm not a clerk, though). The Thereandbackagain accounts were CU-blocked last June by Oshwah, but without tags. It might have had to do with 174.82.126.154 rather than a named LTA, but perhaps Oshwah can shed some light on this if it is a named master. 174.82 has been an ongoing problem given their block log. IIRC, CensoredScribe's IPs were located in a different part of the country from 174.82, but that's a long time ago. There are some non-stale CS socks that might be useful.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:00, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmm I didn't see this SPI until I got done checking a few new vandals (in the history of this SPI also), but a whole bunch of these are confirmed. I don't know if it's worth the trouble going through to confirm and tag--it's all so childish. Beware: I placed a block that some may argue is strict. You are welcome to adjust it, and you don't need my permission. Drmies (talk) 17:17, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Drmies: I don't know what you're referring to with the "strict block". I personally think it's worth checking the accounts, confirming, tagging, etc., and then putting this with the oldest account first, although some of them are stale, but I'm more interested in tying this to an earlier master if that's possible. Thebirdlover, it's fine for you to add new socks, but please comment when you do so (not just in an edit summary). Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:53, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because of the doubt that this is not CensoredScribe, I think it makes sense to run a check before disposing of the case, so I've changed the status back to CU. If no one thinks it's worth running, i.e., a clerk or a CU, then please decline it, and we can dispose of it as is.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:12, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I ran some checks. This isn't CensoredScribe, and there probably isn't going to be a block that can stop this completely. I don't think we need to be tagging these or meticulously listing every variation of fart, butt, gay, etc. - these accounts are obvious and disruptive enough that AIV would be a better reporting venue than SPI. Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Thereandbackagain1 exists and I suppose I'll merge this there. no No comment with respect to IP address(es) of course. Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

Same pattern of editing/vandalism on Lord of The Rings-related character pages.

Primarily interested in a CU for Maxtrontrimax.

A majority of these usernames are already blocked, except for a few. Some are blocked just for vandalism, but many are blocked for longterm abuse.

Creating a record at SPI so that it can be documented for future username insights.

It has reached the point Chiswick Chap has put a disclaimer on many LOTR character articles. Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 04:06, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding some sockpuppets that modified my talk page when I was trying to be a friendly face/good cop to push him towards leaving Wikipedia/not vandalizing, a strategy admittedly that did not work as well as I hoped despite some initially promising results. Some of these were already mentioned in this SPI which still needs to merged. --Thebirdlover (talk) 20:06, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The only account in this list that was not already blocked, Maxtrontrimax (talk · contribs), is Red X Unrelated, but they do have a second account. Neither account is being used abusively, and it looks to me like they forgot their password for the first account and created a second one, which is not in and of itself sockpuppetry.
No sleepers immediately visible. Closing with no further action. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 17:03, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This should be moved here. This is the Lord of the Rings vandal again. I have been trying to be personable and approachable after the SPI I worked on to make them feel less bored so they stop vandalizing, since I think this is just attention seeking behavior from someone who feels unimportant and not a bad person. That’s how the situation leading up to this current investigation started. Per the advice of administrators, I have posted a message to my talk page saying that if this person wants to continue talking to me, they need to send an email and not violate their ban. I do believe my strategy was working though, this user's vandalism to his targets decreased significantly over the past week (although admittedly did not completely stop). --Thebirdlover (talk) 01:19, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
