No objection to merging, but I think restaurants serving Chinese cuisine is maybe more precise, and when we look at other cuisines it's even more of a problem of imprecision...what is a Southern restaurant, for instance? But Restaurants serving Southern cuisine is fairly precise. Ethnic restaurants is kind of western-centric, as "ethnic" is a relative term. Is an American-style burger place an "ethnic" restaurant? Then perhaps a discussion about Category:Ethnic restaurants is more appropriate. But the "restaurants serving" categories are currently duplicates, except for Category:Restaurants serving Eastern European cuisine, which I've proposed renaming to Category:Eastern European restaurants above for consistency.   • Merge to Category:Chinese restaurants. There is little ambiguity to what is a Chinese restaurant (or an Italian restaurant etc.). The category even has a hatnote redirecting to Category:Restaurants in China if someone has a doubt. Keep things simple and use common names. I agree that we could maybe rename Category:Ethnic restaurants to something other than ethnic, such as e.g. Restaurants by culture, but I disagree that it is a Western notion to categorize restaurants by culture. @Liz: from what I can see in page history, it seems that within the same hour:
  1. A user created Category:Restaurants serving Chinese cuisine and added two pages to it
  2. A second user reverted this addition on the restaurants' pages, with edit comments such as see Chinese restaurants in Canada
  3. This second user opened this CfD discussion.
I can only approve each of the actions above, clearly in the spirit of WP:BRD. I think that the nominator was right to open a discussion, even for an empty category, because it is not entirely moot to look for community consensus showing that this creation attempt is redundant with existing categories that are judged to be better-named, instead of just a technical deletion.
