- Moral Event Horizon: Josef Hampton crosses this when he crushes Lena's pet canary, the only gift he ever gave her, in a lesson on hurting people.
- Nightmare Fuel: Midway through the book, Ty goes to a dangerous factory job involving acid rain and is continually reminded of the need to get in and out quickly. She fails to make it out, is horribly burned, and eventually loses an eye from the acid. The entire situation is told in horrifying, realistic detail, especially when she wakes up afterward, is still in pain, and has nothingness where darkness would normally be.
- Tear Jerker: The climax of the book has Ty dying to save Lena, with flashbacks showing scenes of her bonding with Colin that had been hinted at previously, but never seen in detail, as her life flashes before her eyes.
