Evon is a furry Heroic Fantasy webcomic created by Brittany E. Shepard (artist) and Mr. Wax (writer), first published in 2008.
Occurring in the fictional world of Herrah, it is the story of Evon Allure, an ursine sorceress on the run from her former guardian/teacher (and the shadowy group of sorcerers he's a member of). Evon hires an adventurer named Herodotus Dent to help her retrieve an important personal item from the very school she'd just run away from. Along the way, Evon discovers a few secrets about herself and her parents' deaths and sets out on a quest to learn the whole truth, with Hero (who has a few secrets of his own) now serving as her bodyguard.
The comic updates Monday and Friday (usually). Contains occasional graphic violence and nudity.
Evon contains examples of the following tropes:
- Action Girl: Evon can take care of herself. Even when overwhelmed, she'll take a chunk out of her opponents.
- After Action Patch Up: Hero has a lot of these.
- Age Insecurity: All members of the Cabal are listed as being centuries old, except Lanna, the sole female member, who refuses to disclose her age and is infuriated when Evee calls her an "old hag". Ironically she's dating Traveler, the oldest (over 800) member.
- Always a Bigger Fish: Occurs back-to-back in the same scene: Maximus saves Evon from being raped by Legune... But only because Legune's actions might interfere with his own plans to use Evon in a Super Breeding Program, and promptly takes Legune's place. Cue Villainous Rescue by Feneris.
- Anti-Magic: Draps - magic-nulling neck collars.
- Armor-Piercing Question: In response to Hero's constant (unconvincing) protests that his feelings for Evon are strictly professional, Felvis asked Hero why he was still traveling with Evon, since the job she'd actually hired him for was done.
- A few chapters later, he asks the same question of Evon. He actually gets an answer from Evon.
- Art Evolution: Compare the original Chapter One cover and first page with the redrawn versions.
- Attempted Rape: Evon is the victim of this twice, in a row.
- Badass Normal: Hero can take down anything from spellcasters to summoned nightmare creatures.
- Battle Butler: Belvidier.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Evon and Hero in the earlier comics. Once they got to know and trust each other, it mellowed into straight UST.
- BFS: Hero's blade struggles to cling to the bottom edge of this trope.
- Bloody Murder: Lanna the Shadow uses her blood to form projectiles.
- Bullying a Dragon:
- Lady Cleo bullying Evon at every opportunity, despite knowing Evon's a spellcaster who could fry her with a thought.
- Legune forces the Evon clone to service him orally, while continually taunting her with being disposed of if she doesn't please him. The same clone explicitly stated to be physically and mystically stronger than the girl who has defied The Cabal for who knows how long. It didn't end well for him. Granted, he didn't count on the clone possessing all of the original Evon's memories, including the sexual assault and near-rape.
- Call-Back: In comic #729, Belvidier makes mention that he "has a daughter out there somewhere." In comic #974, we find out who she is: Feneris' lover, Freya.
- Casual Kink: Traveller and Lanna discuss their plans to take over the Cabal while the latter is naked and chained to the bedposts.
- Chainmail Bikini: Evon wears one for one of her attempts to catch Hero's attention in chapter 17. He points out the practical issues almost immediately.
- Cooldown Hug: Areth administers one to Evon after the battle with Lanna.
- Destination Defenestration: More than one bad guy has been thrown through a window.
- Distracted by the Sexy: Hero takes advantage of this twice in Chapter 3.5 as a negotiation tactic, first using Evon (against her will), then using himself.
- Dragon with an Agenda: Every named member of the Cabal who isn't Sevarian (except Ferneris, who just wants to be The Dragon and thinks The Cabal's pursuit of Evon is a waste of time and resources) is plotting to overthrow him or something.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: In addition to the Art Evolution, early comics included such animesque elements as funny background events, Imagine Spots as well as more frequent explicit nudity (especially male nudity).
- Enemy Civil War: The members of the Cabal are constantly plotting for Sevarian's favour and/or spot, which leads them to interfere with each other a lot. Comes to a head when Maximus, charged up on Dark Mana, makes his move killing Sevarian and forcing Feneris to flee
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Hero. His full name is Herodotus.
- Everyone Can See It: Anyone who sees Evon and Hero together for more than a few minutes. Each thinks the other doesn't see them that way, so it doesn't matter.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Feneris and his assistant/lover, Freya.
- Evil Versus Evil: A team of Feneris' goons manage to capture Evon, only for Legune and his creatures to show up, slaughter them and steal her.
- Fanservice: The nudity has grown less frequent and far less explicit from the early days, but there's still plenty of it (of both genders).
- Full-Frontal Assault:
- Maximus fights Ferneris naked because he was interrupted trying to rape Evon.
- Evee's Roaring Rampage of Revenge is carried out while she's totally nude.
- Fully Dressed Cartoon Animals: The entire cast.
- Gender Bender: The Traveler is turned into a sorceress after falling into a pool of dark matter.
- Groin Attack: After which Evee spits a piece of Legune's anatomy out before snapping his neck. You do the math.
- I Gave My Word: "I gave you my word that I would help you. I never go back on my word." (Page 297: Contains boobs)
- Is That What He Told You?:
- Young Evon discovered Feneris was intentionally botching her magic lessons for his own purposes.
- Evon is told that Feneris killed her parents. When confronted, Feneris has no idea what she's talking about. Evon was told this by a Cabal sorceress working to undermine Feneris' position as Severian's right hand. Feneris later admits he was ordered to kill them, but refused, for as-yet unknown reasons.
- Handsome Lech: Hero's adventuring partner, Venir.
- Klingon Promotion: Maximus gives himself one, when he kills Sevarian and forces Ferneris to flee. The rest of the Cabal falls right in line.
- Kung-Fu Clairvoyance: Hero has an uncanny knack for sensing ambushes, verging on Spider-Sense.
- Late-Arrival Spoiler: Evon is a being known as a "Focus" or "Force", a living magical amplifier. Hero is a prince and the heir to a small kingdom.
- Laser-Guided Karma:
- Venir tries to sell Evon out to The Cabal for the reward. Not only are they not impressed with what he offered note , but they assume he was sent by Hero to feed them misinformation. The Cabal turns him over to Legune for "interrogation".
- The Fate of Legune: Murdered by the Evon clone
- Lethal Chef: Evon is a variation: she's normally a very good cook, but whenever she tries to cook over an open campfire she inevitably burns it.
- Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Invoked by Evon in the wake of meeting her half-brother.
- Mad Scientist: Legune the Alchemist.
- Male Frontal Nudity: Though never during sex.
- Male Gaze/Female Gaze: Both used in Chapter 3.5 (and taken advantage of by Hero for business purposes).
- May–December Romance: Lanna and Traveller, the youngest (so she claims) and oldest members of the Cabal, respectively.
- Mayfly–December Romance: Presumably any relationship between a sorcerer and a non-magical person. When Feneris asks Evon what she'll do when Hero inevitably dies before her, she tries to turn the question back on him and Freya. He simply says he will mourn her, as he has done before.
- Mêlée à Trois: The fight between Sevarius, Feneris, and Freya vs. Evon, Evee and Hero turns into all of them vs. a Drunk on the Dark Side Maximus.
- Nebulous Evil Organisation: The Cabal. They want to take over the world and Evon is allegedly the key to their plans.
- Necromancer: Lanna the Shadow's specialty. She's been seen using magic to summon a life-sucking shapeshifter and weaponizing her own blood.
- No Biochemical Barriers: Corrin's mother is a fox. His father is a bear. And in fact, was Evon's father, Serris Allure.
- Non Chalant Dodge: Maximus tries to square off against Feneris. Cue Curb-Stomp Battle.
- Noodle Incident: Hero seems to have quite the colorful history, especially when it comes to the ladies.
- Not What It Looks Like: Evon is late for a dinner (not a) date, spies a woman draped all over Hero and storms off without letting Hero know she'd arrived. The woman turns out to be Headmaster Felvis' sister, who was just teasing Hero.
- The Nudifier: Evon attempts to teleport herself and Hero to their next destination, but accidentally teleports only their clothes. The next chapter begins with them arriving at the town by boat, but there's a bonus chapter devoted entirely to them dealing with their nudity.
- Oh, Crap!: Evon's reaction when she sees a picture of her newly-discovered half-brother Corrin, Evon's first lover. His reaction is the same when he sees her "for the first time." He gets over it quickly. See Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!
- And, a few strips later, Corrin's face when his mother demands "What did you do THIS time?" And he thought Hero beating the stuffing out of him was bad...
- Older Than They Look: Magic users age slower than normal people, so Evon looks like a twelve-year old. Apparently.
- Poor Communication Kills:
- Evon and Hero separately spot wanted posters of Evon, offering a massive reward for her capture. Evon spots Hero looking at one and since he doesn't mention it, she assumes he's planning on turning her in. Hero didn't mention it because he didn't want to give her something else to worry about.
- Evon storms off alone, in a fit of jealousy, when Hero tells her to stay indoors for the night, while he heads off with a female friend. They're actually trying to track down an unknown creature responsible for killing several women, and whom they suspected (correctly) was hunting Evon. Guess what Evon runs into immediately after storming off?
- Really 700 Years Old: All of the portrayed Cabal members are at least 100 years old - save possibly Lanna, who won't reveal her age. Sevarian and Traveler both top 500 years.
- Rebel Prince: Hero, semi-voluntarily. He left to avoid his land going to war with the families of the nobles he slaughtered (See Roaring Rampage of Revenge). That... and avoiding his Arraigned Marriage to Lady Cleo.
- Rich Bitch: Lady Cleo.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge:
- Evee escapes from Legune and the Cabal by going back through Legune's lair, slaughtering every living person who crossed her path.
- Hero tracked down the assassin who killed his mother, then proceeded to wipe out most of the nobles who had hired him.
- Rouge Angles of Satin: Early comics refered to Hero as an "adventure."
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: Hero.
- Running Gag: Evon's inability to cook with a campfire.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: The reason Corrin is willing to pick up his relationship with Evon: As sorcerers, they're not "bound by the rules that govern ordinary people" and shouldn't let said rules keep them from "continuing something wonderful'. Evon vehemently disagreed.
- Selective Obliviousness: Evon denies her feelings for Hero to Evee: despite the above-mentioned Love Epiphany and the fact that Evee flat out tells her that she (Evee) has the same set of memories and knows what kind of thoughts she's (Evon) has had about Hero.
- Servile Snarker: Belvidier.
- Shirtless Scene: Hero has quite a few, mostly during After Action Patch-Ups.
- Shout-Out: When the Evon clone is rampaging through the villan's lair, a random mook calls out, "She killed Fritz!"
- Stalker with a Test Tube: Maximus wanted Evon to breed his own army of Focuses (Foci?), with himself as sire. Evon's consent in the matter was optional.
- Strong, but Unskilled: Evon has the magical power of an experienced mage, but thanks to her botched education, has a beginner's level of actual skill.
- Super-Empowering: Evon is a Type 3 - she can supercharge the mystic abilities of others.
- Surprise Incest: Evon finds out that Corrin, the student she slept with in Chapter 4 is actually her half-brother. She is not happy about this.
- That Came Out Wrong: "You know, after all this time, it is going to be strange not sleeping with you."
- That Man Is Dead: Belvedier makes it abundantly clear he is no longer the Demon Overlord. Feneris, a member of the Cabal, acquiesces without complaint.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Lady Cleo graphically tells Evon that she doesn't care what she does with Hero - she's his Lady and Evon better know her place.
- Too Dumb to Live: When Legune taunts Evee with imminent destruction if she doesn't please him—pleasing him meaning performing oral sex on him. He realizes too late that where her mouth is, there her teeth are also. And while he's in agony from being so violently castrated, she snaps his neck.
- Treacherous Spirit Chase: One of the creatures sent after Evon is a Blank (a life force-stealing demonic creature) in the shape of Evon's father, Serrin.
- Unholy Matrimony: Lanna and Traveller.
- Upgrade Artifact: Spellbooks are like this to spellcasters, giving magic users not only access to more and better spells, but better understanding of them, increasing their overall power. This is part of the reason Evon wanted her father's spellbook back so badly.
- Vain Sorceress: Lanna is the only member of the Cabal whose age is not listed, and the only female. She looks to be no older than thirty but the youngest Cabal member who will admit to his age is still over 100.
- Waterfall Shower: Evon takes one after running away from Hero.
- Wham Episode: Chapter Twenty-Three drops several bombs regarding Belvidier's past: He was apparently a warlord known as "The Demon Overlord". He's also Freya's father.
- Wizards Live Longer: Spellcasters age more slowly than normal people.
- World of Funny Animals
- You All Meet in an Inn: The comic begins a tavern called "The Happy Vixen."
