- Acting for Two: The Tweedles are both played by Matt Lucas.
- Billing Displacement: A given with any Johnny Depp film. If the ads for the movie were any indication, you'd think this movie would be called "Johnny Depp Wears a Hat: The Movie."
- Cast the Runner-Up:
- At one point, Anne Hathaway was offered the lead role. She turned it down, feeling it was too similar to roles she had played in The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted. But she was keen to work with Tim Burton and so took the smaller role of the White Queen.
- Michael Sheen was the original actor cast as the Cheshire Cat, but had to back out due to a scheduling conflict. Stephen Fry replaced him. (Sheen ended up voicing the White Rabbit instead.)
- Creator Backlash: Tim Burton apparently apologized for the film's mediocrity.
- Creator Couple: Husband and wife Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton both have roles in the film.
- Completely Different Title: in Greece the movie is called "Alice returns to wonderland"
- Fake Brit: Johnny Depp, Crispin Glover, and Anne Hathaway are all American, while Mia Wasikowska is actually Australian. Averted with the rest of the cast.
- Follow the Leader: The success of the film led to Disney making more re-imaginings of their classic animated films for better or for worse. Oz the Great and Powerful is a more direct example, sharing this film's concept of "classic story set in a different point in its timeline."
- Playing with Character Type: Anne Hathaway had at that point gotten her start playing wholesome Disney heroines. The White Queen is a creepier take on them - she's in the Uncanny Valley, and Word of God says she surrounds herself with so much light imagery because she's too tempted by the dark side.
- Real-Life Relative: Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter's children appear as extras in the end scene.
- Role Reprise: Katsuhisa Hoki reprises the Dodo in the Japanese version from Alice in Wonderland.
- Star-Making Role: Mia Wasikowska was getting some roles in America, but this and The Kids Are All Right brought her to international attention - and she won a Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award that year.
- Typecasting:
- Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter is pretty standard for his typecasting at the time.
- Helena Bonham Carter makes the Red Queen into her usual dark nutcase types too.
- What Could Have Been:
- Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried apparently lobbied for the role of Alice. Other actresses, like Jessica Brown Findlay, almost got the role and would have made it quite a different character.
- Dwayne Johnson and David Walliams were considered for the role of The Mad Hatter.
- Early drafts had the Mad Hatter acting as a love interest for Alice. Remnants of this remain in the final film, although it's clear they're Platonic Life-Partners instead.
- Alan Rickman's face was originally going to be composited onto Absolem's, and they filmed him speaking his lines in the studio. They scrapped this idea, but did still model Absolem's features off his.
- Working Title: Alice.
