A news show made up of one or more documentaries, each longer than a news segment on the nightly news. Frequently showcases investigative journalism. Also known as "newsmagazines" because of the long format of their stories.
Not to be confused with CBC Television's early-1990s experiment of replacing The National and The Journal, which were separate programs at 10:00 PM (The National handled news, The Journal was this type of program, albeit with a heavy emphasis on the arts), with a combined program at 9:00 PM; this failed for a number of reasons and The National returned by 1995 (though The Journal never did due to the death of its' lead anchor Barbara Frum).
