Edward Leonard "Ed" O'Neill Jr. (born April 12, 1946 in Youngstown, Ohio) is best known as playing Al Bundy (the once-great high school quarterback now reduced to working at a women's shoe store to support his lazy, bon-bon eating wife and crude, ungrateful children) on the raunchy FOX sitcom Married... with Children, or more recently as Jay Pritchett on ABC's more family-friendly Modern Family. Even though he's famously portrayed snarky patriarchs (though Jay Pritchett isn't as snarky as Al Bundy), he's had a fairly successful and varied acting career in many movies and TV series:
- Title character "Dutch" Dooley in Dutch
- Danny O'Shea in Little Giants
- Glen in Wayne's World
- Det. Paulie Sellitto in The Bone Collector
- Lt. Joe Friday on ABC's 2003 revival of Dragnet, and
- Gov. Eric Baker on NBC's The West Wing
In addition to being a traditional actor, Ed has lent his voice talents to several animated productions:
- Mr. Litwak in Wreck-It Ralph
- Orson from The Penguins of Madagascar
- Hank in Finding Dory
Little known fact... Ed played college football (American Football) at Youngstown State and at Ohio University. He was drafted by the National Football League's Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 to play defensive lineman but was cut during the training camp. This little fact was worked into the script of Married... with Children, with Al reliving his glory years as a champion high school football star and even saw Terry Bradshaw, Hall of Fame quarterback for the Steelers, making several appearances on the show. Another little-known fact: he holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is good friends with the Gracie family, and is highly regarded in the martial arts community.
