:I would like to nominate Editor Yupik because of their work associated with indigenous people, specifically the [[Sami]]. It should be of interest and noted that Yupik has worked more on the Sami and Finnish wikis than on the English version. Fellow editors have learned more about indigenous people and how to write about their own culture by seeing Yupik's personal work and cultural advocacy. In addition to writing articles, Yupik has uploaded many images and helped others understand the culture of Wikipedia so that things are done right when creating and improving articles within this focus. They are also very active with Wikidata in this regard. [[ping|User:Ipigott]] and [[ping|User:Megalibrarygirl]] provided seconds for this nomination

Ethnicity vs. nationality

Rosiestep: Thanks for drawing our attention to the discussion. I am fully aware of the problem of nationality vs. ethnicity in connection with the Samis. Not long ago, I made a proposal for introducing new categories based on ethnicity rather than nationality but this did not appear to be acceptable. It certainly seems to be the case that most Samis would prefer to be recognized first and foremost by ethnicity but this is somewhat complicated by the fact that the majority are connected to national organizations related to politics, education, the media or sports. So it looks to me as it we'll just have to live with things as they are for the time being.--Ipigott (talk) 10:24, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Ipigott:. Are citations from stuff written about in that publication ok? For example, an article from it was cited in this newspaper article. Kotus, i.e. The Institute for the Languages of Finland and its counterpart in Sweden Institute for Language and Folklore. It's discussed in the book that all students of Saami studies has to read in Finland. Yle news coverage: [1], [2], [3]. It's been considered to be of such a good quality that it's been used in the mother tongue portions of the Finnish matriculation exams for Inari Saami and Northern Saami. Some more: [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15]. Also. it's frequently misspelled as SAMI DIEDALAS AIGECALA outside of the Saami-speaking world. It's just been explained to me that it's not an AfD, simply a prod for notability. Perhaps you can improve the article on the basis of the above or simply explain the background on the talk page. I'm no expert with Sami publications myself. In this connection, you may be interested to know that this is just one of many recent articles on the Samis by Tcr25. Thank you both. I added two more citations as to the role of SDÁ in building Sámi languages as languages of research and science, but I don't think it will change Randykitty's opinion. In general, as I understand his objections, he's looking for coverage of the journal itself, not citations of papers it's published, or for evidence that it's included in a selective index of publications (which I would think NSI Level 2 status would qualify as, but ...) Part of the problem is that I cannot access any library books that might discuss SDÁ right now since the libraries they are in are closed because of the pandemic. The other part is the same problem we see for pretty much any indigenous or minority publication not in English, which is non-coverage outside of the community itself and a lack of understanding of the importance of the publication to the scientific community (and the community in general) that uses the language(s). -Yupik (talk) 14:03, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think your second point hits the nail right on the head. "Notability" isn't always going to be immediately evident based solely on English-language sources, but that doesn't make something non-notable, especially when talking about "small" languages/communities.
