:I nominate Penny Richards as Editor of the Week because of the over 1,200 articles she has created and also for her huge contribution to Women's biographies. She has participated in numerous de-stub-ithons and her collaborative spirit shines through her work. The articles she has created focus mostly on gender and/or disability and are consistently informative and well presented. The subject matter she chooses shows a diverse range that makes Wikipedia richer every time she creates a new article. She has run through the alphabet (A to Z) several times. She also is active in promoting and attending edit-a-thons and Wikimedia events. She is a top editor with a kind manner towards others. She is very active with uploads to Pinterest and social media on behalf of the Women in Red Project. This nomination was seconded by SusunW, Ipigott, Victuallers and Megalibrarygirl.

Digital Anthropology research

Hello Penny Richards, My name is Stephanie Barker and I am a student at the University of Colorado Boulder. I am currently enrolled in a Digital Anthropology class, which attempts to answer how the digital world affects culture and how culture affects the digital world. For my final project I am doing an ethnography on women Wikipedia users and as a member of the WikiProject Women page I was hoping I could ask you some questions about your experiences editing Wikipedia pages. 1. Have you ever been locked into an intense editing war? If yes, please explain the situation to me. 2. How did you become interested in editing Wikipedia pages and did you have any initial fears/hesitations when you started editing pages? 3. Have you ever been a victim of a mass deletion or other vandalism on Wikipedia? If yes, please explain the situation to me. 4. How would you describe your gender? 5. Is there anything else you would like to share with me about your experiences as a Wikipedia editor? Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I would like you to know that I am only sharing my research with my professor and the other students in my class. If you would like me to send you a copy of my final project, I would be more than happy to! Sincerely, Stelba90 (talk) 00:39, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is just a reminder that Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge kicks off today, with the first subject being Bristol. Please remember to post entries under your name at Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge/Bristol. You are receiving this message because you are listed as a participant in the challenge.

Happy editing! --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:46, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The first leg is Bristol. Names are to be added at the bottom of the Bristol page and articles listed. Please also make sure that you add entries you improve/start to the main list on the main page. There will be £10 to win each day for the most points accumulated and then the winner of the county crowned after three days. The overall winner will be decided from the points accumulated from each county round. If you're not interested in winning anything and want to contribute anything you want from the West Country this is fine too though. Best of luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:08, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I've started a new initiative, the Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. It's a long term goal to bring about 10,000 article improvements to the UK and Ireland. Through two contests involving just six or seven weeks of editing so far we've produced over 1500 improvements. Long term if we have more people chipping it and adding articles they've edited independently as well from all areas of the UK then reaching that target is all possible. I think it would be an amazing achievement to see 10,000 article improvements by editors chipping in. If you support this and think you might want to contribute towards this long term please sign up in the Contributors section. No obligations, just post work on anything you feel like whenever you want, though try to avoid basic stubs if possible as we're trying to reduce the overall stub count and improve general comprehension and quality. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:21, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll update that main list once the West Country challenge is complete though so don't worry about adding your entries for the contest to it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:19, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Been browsing the people stub categories and it's appalling how few women bios there are, worse than anywhere I've seen. As some countries barely have a couple of stubs I'm going to permit new articles on women too, but the articles have to be minimum 1.5 kb bios and no stubs! Women in Red should have some missing lists but if you could see to it that better lists are drawn up for the African countries I'll list them on the contest page/subpage.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:52, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Jean Pond Miner Coburn. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Africa Destubathon

Hi, thanks for your work so far! Can you do me a favour though and always add every entry you do to the main list here as well as the entries page, regardless if yet approved or not as that's the master list of all articles being done. It's just veyr time consuming for me to be judging the articles, trying to contribute myself and chasing up what people have done and filling it out for people each time. So if you can take care of that this would be a great help, there's some part filled out ones underneath so you just need to add country, article name and then you username. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:33, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Penny, there's another book being offered, African Women: A Historical Panorama. Would you like to receive it as a complimentary prize for your effort? I'm not sure how much use it would be more individual bios, but might contain some info to enable you to write about women in historical Africa. It should be interesting to read anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:02, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli

On 24 May 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli played the titular character in Carmen in 1907 with "the allurement of sheer wickedness", and was accidentally stabbed on stage? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Women In Red Page Needs Some Love

Thank you, Penny, for your support of women on Wikipedia! A page that was restored by the Women in Red Project is in urgent need of an experienced wiki editor to champion it. Unfortunately, a singular editor has made it his mission to undermine the page, and has marked the page for re-deletion. Sending this note in the hopes that you will join the conversation, and give a valuable woman’s voice a chance. Here is the page link. Thanks for all the good you do! A-voice-for-women (talk) 15:51, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"A-voice-for-women" has posted similar messages asking for support to seven user talk pages. She is a new editor, and therefore presumably didn't know that this was contrary to Wikipedia:Canvassing, so I have posted to her talk page to let her know. DYK for Anissa Rawda Najjar

On 30 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Anissa Rawda Najjar, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Anissa Rawda Najjar. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Anissa Rawda Najjar), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WP:MUSICALS

Hello. Thanks for your contributions. When you add an article about an actor or actress who primarily appeared in musical theatre (including pantomime, Victorian burlesque, the banner template for the talk page should be the one for the WikiProject Musical Theatre project, rather than the Theatre project. If he or she primarily appeared in Gilbert and Sullivan, there is a WP:Wikiproject Gilbert and Sullivan, which has its own templates. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:36, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Doris Frankel

On 18 July 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Doris Frankel, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. User:Jane023/Women in Red, now blue on some Wikipedia

Hi Penny, thanks for taking the time to look at this list User:Jane023/Women in Red, now blue on some Wikipedia! Please don't edit the list. The idea is to show which items need information on Wikidata. All edits to the list will be overwritten by the listeria bot that created the list. If you update the Wikidata items, then when you click "update manually" you will see the changes. Thanks. Jane (talk) 19:48, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh, okay, sorry I misunderstood. Wikidata feels like a minefield to me, I'm always afraid of editing anything there. Maybe someone bolder should do this instead, and I'll stick to en:wiki for now.Penny Richards (talk) 23:39, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There are two things about the list that are useful: One is an indicator of whether they tend to have lots of other data besides occupation (they don't) and the other is to check for images & birthdates (which some do have). As I said to Rosie, don't try to fix the whole list in one go as it will get you down, but just pick at it from time to time. Try doing one on someone you know and just create an occupation statement on Wikidata. After about an hour, if you click "update manually", then this itam should disappear from the list (they are listed in descending order by Q number, which gives an indication of creation date). In the case of Penelope Reed Doob for example, you said she was a scholar and medievalist, but keep it simple on Wikidata - she's a writer. I did that one so you can check it when you click the Q number here: d:Q33111949. I just scrolled to the bottom of the statement list, clicked "add" then added "occupation" in the left hand property field, and "writer" in the right hand statement field, then clicked "save". Lot's of clicks for one statement, but it's a start. Best, Jane (talk) 10:31, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the patient explanation. I'm sure the list is very useful, but I'm not a data person; I don't get any thrill filling in forms (got plenty of that chore in my life already). So I'll leave Wikidata to the folks who do enjoy that. I had to laugh at "after about an hour"... that's definitely not how my leisure time online happens! I agree, that would be my decision too. Also, I like the idea of someone finding her on Wikipedia if they've got a painting by her (she seems to have been popular in her time, and still turns up at auction), and at least learning the when-and-where basics. You know Penny, I wrote the article History of women in Puerto Rico and of the 12 women who were honored in the "La Plaza en Honor a la Mujer Puertorriqueña" (Plaza in Honor of Puerto Rican Women) in San Juan, I wrote the bios of Lola Rodríguez de Tió, Luisa Capetillo, Felisa Rincón de Gautier, Rebekah Colberg, María Luisa Arcelay de la Rosa, Julia de Burgos and Sylvia Rexach. Someone else wrote the bios. of Sor Isolina Ferré and Miriam Naveira de Merly. You did such an excellent job with your article on María Martínez Acosta de Pérez Almiroty that it made me think that maybe you could honor us with the bios. of Josefina Barceló Bird de Romero and María Libertad Gómez Garriga. Wiki Science Competition 2017

Hi, I don't if you missed all the messages I left here and on commons and wikiveristy about this event.

I am checking with Ivo Kruusamägi from Wikimedia Estonia the composition of the final juries. We did our best to keep it balanced by continent, gender, field etc but in the end we are still working on it.

I hope that the results will promote science around the globe in any case. As a last appropriate effort now that more urgent issues have been addressed and we are finalizing the main organization, I am also looking all the profiles of active wikimedians that are women or from countries without a jury or from other research fields, with a public name and surname (jurors should be public figures) and a academic or scientific or technological education or position.

The key aspect is to make a wikidata item of the jurors, so I need some ID that show they are or were related to the academia. There are good chance for example that this is you. We want to give the idea to the young uploaders that we their images will be evaluated by people who were or are in the academia like them, with different backgrounds.

Would you be interested in joining us to be a juror in the second-level jury? I am sure that next time we will find new additional contacts and I will find your name not at the last minute. The workload is in December.

Also, as I said in the talk page of the next "women in red" event, we expect wikimedians to make good use of the images, and this includes also the portraits of professors, therefore the representation of women in science.

Even you don't have time, could you help us also in promoting the event amongst people you know or mailing lists or groups you have joined? This will be also useful to promote more national juries next time.

Thank you in advance.--Alexmar983 (talk) 03:37, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexmar983: Sure, count me in, that sounds fun. I knew my boring user name would come handy someday. :) Penny Richards (talk) 17:09, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good. Send an email with your email, the one you want to be used for the Mailing list and internal communication. If we get enough jurors, we can split them in two juries for different continents, that's what we will do probably when we rearrange the names alphabetically.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:07, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Happy new year, I have sent an email for the jury. We start soon (I hope). Bye!--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:32, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Good job and very fast! the "rest of the world" category is not ready yet so maybe I put you soon as a juror for India...--Alexmar983 (talk) 06:54, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy to do that! The Iran images were lovely, felt like I was clicking through an art gallery. :) Penny Richards (talk) 14:38, 4 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to hear that. The main Iranian uploader is a very good photographer, although not a scientist. Unfortunately the Indian pictures are less nice, there is much more crap there (even if sometimes more scientific)... in any case as soon as the majority of the Iranian jurors have completed their tasks, we can start India. I simply cannot ask too many things at the same time to the same people. Also, I am not sure if the "rest of the world" category is ready, but they are only 150 files so it is much faster to revise.--Alexmar983 (talk) 05:09, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

- User:SuperHamster and User:Titodutta on behalf of The English Wikipedia WAM Team

This will be the last message you receive from the English Wikipedia WAM team for being a 2016 participant. If you sign up for WAM 2017, you will continue receiving periodic updates on the 2017 event.

A Shaker Christmas wish
Give good gifts, one to another
Peace, joy and comfort gladly bestow
Harbor no ill 'gainst sister or brother
Smooth life's journey as you onward go.

Give for the noblest of efforts your pow'rs;

proxy

Hi Penny, I just noticed this edit, where you add a reference that goes through your local proxy (the .gate.lib.buffalo.edu thing). I followed the link, and I don't get the information as I do not have access to the buffalo library (hence, rendering the link utterly useless for most of the world). Can you please update this link (and any others that you may have inadvertedly added)? Thanks! --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:19, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. Once I didn't include the links, and got dinged for that too; so now I do include the links, even though (obviously) most people don't have Buffalo library privileges. I only use that account to access large newspapers (in the case of the Ida Benfey Judd article, it's all New York Times clippings), and figure that other folks can access those by whatever means work for them, using the date/page in the cite. But I can stop including the link at all, if that works better.Penny Richards (talk) 16:23, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And what is the problem with converting them to links that do not use the proxy: https://search-proquest-com.gate.lib.buffalo.edu/hnpnewyorktimes/docview/101517447/2FBA9FD4F0C84837PQ/17 to https://search.proquest.com/hnpnewyorktimes/docview/101517447/2FBA9FD4F0C84837PQ/17 - then people can login (if they can, I can't). At least now I get a proquest login window, and not the login window for the buffalo proxy. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:30, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all, I wondered what would be required to fix the links. Thanks, I'll try that. Penny Richards (talk) 16:41, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9401E4D6133DE53ABC4852DFB566838E629EDE&legacy=true .. which would probably be the best, linking to the 'true source'? --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:33, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like it would require a lot more tracking around on my part, to get a completely different link every time I use proquest; but I'll consider it. Penny Richards (talk) 16:41, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry, do you expect other editors to do it for you then? The link you have provided is .. utterly useless. The first solution I provided is a mere editing of the url, converting the proxy domain into the actual domain. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:52, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh no, I'd just probably give the cite without any blue link. Sources don't have to be accessible online at all; I sometimes cite books from my shelf, which I can't link, but WP:AGF applies. Penny Richards (talk) 17:09, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also relevant: "It is convenient, but by no means necessary, for the archived copy to be accessible via the Internet." Wikipedia:PUBLISHED As I said, I'll try to do better, and I thank you for the specific help on fixing links; but I think of the link as a nice extra, as long as the citation is complete.Penny Richards (talk) 17:19, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I am fully aware of that, and I advocate that strongly. I however am also in favour to have correct links to the correct information - as I say, these are utterly useless. And I am not trying to suggest that you are adding these links in bad faith, I see you are meaning well. I do know that now someone else will come after you who has to correct all these links (and in some cases has to go a handful of extra miles, while you are on top of the information already. I don't have access to proquest here (maybe in the university library), but I guess that the query.nytimes.com link is somewhere on the page of the proquest result.
Just to note, this subject came up on a blacklist-discussion here, and we mitigated this from actually blacklisting these links (implement an edit filter, the one that you are now tripping regularly). I ran into your links, and started looking, and based on the results of the edit filter and this discussion, I am starting to be in favour of blacklisting these - many people are ignoring the remark that these links are utterly useless to the majority of the readers of wikipedia, and for some we are better off without them than that we have to do extra work. --Dirk Beetstra T C 18:36, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"I guess that the query.nytimes.com link is somewhere on the page of the proquest result." It isn't. That's the problem. They're annoying like that. I generally try to use links that can easily be googled if I find those first (and I do try), but I have university library access, and some subscriptions through WP:TWL; I use Proquest, JStor, EBSCO, etc., if that's where the best sources are. I'll definitely try to avoid using proxy links from now on; and I'll gladly leave out links to firewalled materials entirely, if that's really better. Penny Richards (talk) 19:47, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have continued the original blacklist discussion I pointed you to in my previous post, and looked at the results of the EditFilter you tripped as well. That discussion now goes in the direction of disallowing the addition of these links (as most people ignored the warning and saved the link anyway - even some that are really easy to convert to a useful link, e.g. with DOIsin the link). For the ones in the filter, you now will not be able to save the edit (after a warning first). —Dirk Beetstra T C 20:56, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Apologize

I do apologize for the warning I left you earlier. I accidentally reverted your change in that article due to thinking it was vandalism and also as well WP:GLOO acting up I have therefore undid my change. I do apologize for any problems it may have caused you. --Clarkcj12 (talk) 06:27, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No trouble, no problems caused, Clarkcj12. I'm glad to know someone's paying attention! Penny Richards (talk) 06:31, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This seems up your alley

I was puttering around with the ASLO awards and ran across this: [2]. I know you have been working on CEE women, but thought this oceanographer might be interesting for you. If you don't want to do her, I will. as it looks like there are plenty of sources to meet GNG.[3], [4], [5], [6]. [7] SusunW (talk) 20:56, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Mira Zore-Armanda

On 2 June 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mira Zore-Armanda, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Croatian oceanographer Mira Zore-Armanda had difficulty gaining passage on research vessels because she was a woman? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mira Zore-Armanda. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Mira Zore-Armanda), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Myrtle Tannehill, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Pygmalion and The Philadelphia Story (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Archiving this page

Hi, Penny! I'm a fellow WIR editor and would like to suggest that you archive this talkpage. If you don't know how to, or if it seems daunting, I can help you. We can set it up to auto-archive or you might do like I do mine and manually archive it within time periods (weeks, months, years, etc.). This is just a suggestion, however its current state causes a long load-time for some who wish to leave you a new message here. Just reply here, if you would like my help. Have a great weekend! — Wyliepedia @ 09:47, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you thank you thank you! I've been meaning to find out how to do this. I would definitely like help @CAWylie:! Penny Richards (talk) 16:32, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Penny Richards: Okay, I've set up the auto-archive for you, which appears at the top. Click the edit button after your name at the page heading to see the breakdown. It keeps posts here within 30 days or unanswered within 7. We can tweak it further once it cleans it all up, if necessary. You can always restore discussions here if you want. — Wyliepedia @ 02:19, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@CAWylie:That sounds excellent, thank you very much. I archived the first fifty posts just now, to test it out. Very easy! Penny Richards (talk) 02:30, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! The bot will do it for you, but you can create and arrange any archive page that you want, now that you know how. Most bots start new ones after 100k size, but it's all your preference and you can DIY but bots save time. — Wyliepedia @ 04:29, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Myrtle Tannehill

I stand corrected on Tannehill's lawsuit to La Rue ["Grace La Rue Sued", LA Times February 11 1920](*several sources, see link). I don't understand how Tannehill thought she was going to win since Hamiton was a grown man responsible for his own actions and he and La Rue married legally. But I digress. It doesn't state if Tannehill won anything. Alienation-of-affections goes on to this day(*see link) and can be quite awarding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlYRBik3uf8

Monthly achievement initiative

Thanks, Penny, for being the first to list an article under the August Monthly achievement initiative. As you may have noticed, I have added a few details. Perhaps you would also like to add the box to your user page (unless you are waiting until you achieve barnstart recognition for five or more). I think a box on your user page might well attract more interest and lead to wider participation in writing women's biographies. I realize all this takes up additional time but it might be worth it.--Ipigott (talk) 06:33, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 23:34, 29 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Yoninah: Thank you for the heads up! I think KAVEBEAR got there first and did the bulk of the fixes, but I made a few more little changes, think it's looking good now. Penny Richards (talk) 00:22, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Please see new note on your DYK nomination. Yoninah (talk) 01:01, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Yoninah:. I think the cut-and-paste expansion you mention was something @KAVEBEAR: did; if they don't do the template thing by tomorrow I'll give it a try (never done that before but I can probably figure it out). Penny Richards (talk) 04:33, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The Template:Copied was not adequately filled out. The diffs need to be added so readers can see exactly what was copied and when the copying took place. Yoninah (talk) 00:49, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Yoninah: Okay. @KAVEBEAR: definitely did those edits, so I'll defer to them on this. Penny Richards (talk) 01:34, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration on missionary wives

Thanks for creating article on Ursula Emerson. Do you want to add a couple of missionary wives to your to do list? I have a problem with starting articles sometimes since I overdo it sometimes with quality instead of just creating a start article. If you want to start these, I can add my stuff to them and then nominate them for DYK. Here are a few women that I have in mind that desperately needs articles:

KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@KAVEBEAR: Happy to add them to my possibilities! I'm working my way through another alphabet run right now (which is why Ursula came up after Rose, Sarah, Thelma...). But once that's done (five articles from now, VWXYZ) I'll be up for starting some of these, absolutely. Happy to work with you! Penny Richards (talk) 02:49, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Women in SFF

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 13:32, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As an aside - one of the topics I want to address in the event to be held at Octocon is how people who think they can't edit because of reasons (like being unable to type for long periods due to physical limitations) can still be major contributors - through copy editing, peer reviews, project rating, reviewing DYK and uploading photos etc. I note from your user page that you work with areas of disabilities. I thought you might have some useful insights or pointers for me. The major topic we are trying to address is lack of genre (specifically women and minorities biographies) in Science Fiction and Fantasy etc on the wiki. But we also want to get that diversity into the editor population and there will be a wide variety of people at the event with many different skills and abilities or limitations. I want to make sure they are all able to see the potential for their involvement. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 18:08, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Antiqueight:That sounds like a great priority for your event. And you're right, there are SO many ways to contribute beyond writing! I always suggest translation tasks (if someone is fluent in another language) or adding a ref (like #1lib1ref). It's easy to start with today's newspaper; is there anything in the headlines that could be added to an article on Wikipedia? An obituary of someone notable? A shortlist for a literary prize? If you have the newspaper in hand, you already have a source. Same with any reliable reference materials. I sometimes think pairing up two starting editors to work together is one way to get through some of the challenges. So, one does the typing, one looks at sources, one writes and one reads it over for errors, before hitting "save". Just a little more security, safety in numbers, for some folks. I'll keep thinking about this and add if I remember anything else.Penny Richards (talk) 21:56, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. And thanks for the fab names you added to the redlist! ☕ Antiqueight chatter 22:20, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It was fun, and it added a few titles to my wishlists too.... whoops. Looking forward to the editathon! Just this week I wrote about Eva Limiñana, a screenwriter in Mexico in the 1930s, who wrote at least one horror film (Herencia macabra/A Macabre Legacy, 1939). If anyone can improve that from Spanish sources, I'd be thrilled! Penny Richards (talk) 01:42, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! That's a point - we should have a section on articles to improve too.... ☕ Antiqueight chatter 02:01, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. California State Contest

Hi Penny, I don't know if you or Rosiestep would be interested in a state contest for California. Naturally if would include women bios but would see article improvements on all topics. We'll need some independent sponsors as WMF won't pay me another cent. Can you think of any institution in California which might be interested in putting up a prize fund?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:07, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

 • Hi Dr. Blofeld. I'd gladly participate in any contest you propose, though I'm not interested in competing in contests as that just isn't my cup of tea. I'm not aware of any organization who would sponsor a contest or give us a grant in general but if I do come across something, I'll let you know! --Rosiestep (talk) 11:20, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a think about it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:34, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Keep me posted, of course, that would be fun. I wouldn't have a clue about finding prize money, but I'd happily publicize any fun California stuff through Wikimedians of Los Angeles and related groups. - Penny Richards (talk) 13:19, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It would be! And so many notable landmarks which are poorly developed. As with previous contests good prizes for editing women bios. Washington DC area and California I'm considering.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:01, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah P. Monks

Thanks for contributing the article Sarah P. Monks! I've been adding some scant biographical details, but they are largely hard to find in reliable sources. Since you appear to have a Newspapers.com account, you might be able to find and clip the full page profile in the December 8, 1918 Los Angeles Times, as described in Vassar Quarterly (title appears to be "Hail Woman as Marvel"). Thanks again, --Animalparty! (talk) 22:38, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Myrtle Elvyn

Quick question–how sure are you about her date of birth? I've got a bit of a mystery here-two rather dubious-looking sources say 1886: what seems to be the VIAF page on her and this website (apparently a digitisation of some contemporary reference book, but I haven't been able to find out what). Blythwood (talk) 01:45, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blythwood I saw those, yeah; the 1887 date comes from the Death Master File listings (assuming she's the Mabel E. Bloch with a February 1975 death, and 10021 zipcode; her death was listed in the NYTimes so a NYC zipcode makes sense); seemed more solid than the 1886 guess. I'm happy to change it to "circa 1886" if you think that's better. Penny Richards (talk) 01:53, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 • Ah right. I think circa is probably better, my feeling is when sources contradict it's better to outright explicitly state that than leave it ambiguous why you preferred one over the other. (I've run into this kind of thing before, and even one case I can't find where we were reduced to consulting a calendar of 1928 to figure out whether "last Tuesday" in a newspaper was the date we thought it was...) It's a shame I can't find where that Grande Musica website is getting its text from, as it does look authentic. (Also, just in case you didn't know, the ping function is tied to a signature, you have to sign a post when you ping or it doesn't work.) Blythwood (talk)
Oh yes, one other thing-how confident do you feel that the VIAF page is her and worth linking to this article? I ran into this when I was trying to activate the authcon tag. The one thing on there I could track down-a set of recordings of Wagner's music arranged for piano and organ rolls-sounds like it might be her, but I'm not 100% positive. Blythwood (talk) 02:12, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Blythwood, ha, yeah, I check calendars for "last Tuesday" a lot. I have zero experience with VIAF pages, but I guess that looks like her--the Sherman TX birthplace is consistent, and there can't be many pianists named Myrtle Elvyn. Myrtle Elvyn, aka Myrtle Elvyn Bloch (c1886-1975) definitely made recordings of Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein, at least--I found reference to it but didn't mention it in the article (yet, can now add); here's the ref for that fact: Hugh Hoffman, "The Welte Autograph Organ" Moving Picture World (November 22, 1913): 855. Penny Richards (talk) 02:24, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I've activated the authcon tag now. Thanks for the quick response! Blythwood (talk) 02:30, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Always happy to work on making biographies better. Penny Richards (talk) 02:37, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, sorry for being so pedantic. Reminds me of Gracie Allen. (I dug it up-here's the worst case of this I've run into; my annotation as the endnote is a major chunk of the article's length... Blythwood (talk) 04:05, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Interlanguage links... and more

Hallo Penny, A lot of your new articles have popped up in my notifications because many years ago I created the article Florence Nightingale Medal to which a batch of your recent articles have linked.

I'm something of a redirects enthusiast and have spent a bit of time yesterday adding lots of redirects for these formidable women, from all the variations of their name which seem likely - it picked up a few incoming links, and I ended up having fun disambiguating a clutch of different people to create a dab page at Rebecca Price. I don't really see the point of surname list pages, but they exist so it's good to get women listed on them, so I've added your subjects to those pages, or made a redirect where they are the only surname-holder.

Today I saw Lucy Minnigerode, ended up creating a surname page at Minnigerode, creating the article about her grandad Charles Minnigerode (and fixing a handful of mis-spellings of him in various articles, and linking to him, etc). But I noticed that you'd got a blue limk to Charles Frederick Ernest Minnigerode which was leading outside enwiki to the German article on him.

There is actually a rather useful template Interlanguage link (which can be abbreviated as Ill which is hard to read in a san-serif font), which allows you to make a redlink within enwiki and also a link to another wiki. When the enwiki article is created, the red link turns blue and the external link disappears. It's rather neat. In this situation the code would have been Charles Frederick Ernest Minnigerode. Just to show what it would look like, here's a version with a red link: Charles xyz Minnigerode [de]. I suggest that it's better to use this template than to link directly to the German article. Hope this is helpful.

Best wishes - and congratulations on the huge stream of well-crafted articles, which makes my own set of stubby little contributions seem very weak! PamD 18:27, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I appreciate this note, because I've always wanted to know how to do interlanguage links correctly, and this is exactly the clear instruction I needed. I love learning new wikipedia "tricks". I will use this a lot.Penny Richards (talk) 18:35, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Hi, I'm looking for articles to feature on the main page in the DYK section during Black History Month. Are you planning to nominate this, or would you like me to? Also, would you be able to write a stub article (one paragraph minimum) on the League of Allied Arts so we can link it in the Johnson article? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 11:58, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to suggest other articles created within the last 7 days to nominate, please let me know. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 12:02, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah: I wasn't planning to, but please go ahead! I'll try to write up the League sometime this weekend. Here are all my Black History Month articles so far this month:
 1. Mary Eliza Walker Crump
 2. Bette Treadville
 3. Suzette Harbin
 4. Exie Lee Hampton
 5. Minnie Tate
 6. Althea Brown Edmiston
 7. Fay M. Jackson
 8. Thyra J. Edwards
 9. Jennie Jackson
 10. Ione Wood Gibbs
 11. Sylura Barron
 12. Dorothy Vena Johnson

And another one is underway right now. ;)Penny Richards (talk) 14:17, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yoninah: And now it's done, I think A. C. Bilbrew would be a good DYK candidate. Penny Richards (talk) 15:50, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you've been busy! The ones that were created more than 7 days ago won't qualify, but I'll start working on some later ones. You might want to think about nominating articles for an appearance during Women's History Month in March. Yoninah (talk) 20:18, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I don't venture into DYK very often, but I do already have one in the Women's History Month queue (Lulu Grace Graves).Penny Richards (talk) 20:32, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I nominated Dorothy Vena Johnson here. At first I thought there was a good hook fact in Sylura Barron, but reading the source, I didn't see the discrimination mentioned outright, so I didn't nominate that. I also passed over Ione Wood Gibbs, as there isn't much to work with hook-wise. I would like to nominate Jennie Jackson, but since the sources are all offline, I wonder if you could type out the verifying text in the source for this hook:
Yoninah: Sure here you go:

“Among their patrons in our country were Henry Ward Beecher, Doctors Cuyler and Talmage, John Wanamaker, Wendell Phillips, William Lloyd Garrison, and Philips Brooks….and they were invited to the White House to sing for President Grant. In England their triumphs were repeated on a larger scale….an immediate result of this concert was an invitation from the Duke and Duchess of Argyll to sing at Argyll Lodge where, to their great surprise and pleasure, they learned that Queen Victoria would be present.” in Mary E. Nalle, "The Preservation of the American Negro Folk Song” Social Service Review (August 1916): 13. Online at Google Books.

“Writing on behalf of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Mark Twain took his task ‘cheerfully.’ ‘I would walk seven miles to hear them sing again,’ he declared in an 1873 letter…” in Gabriel Mllner, “The Tenor of Belonging: The Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Popular Culture of Postbellum Citizenship” ‘’Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressiv e Era’’ 15(4)(2016): 399.

Thank you! Yoninah (talk) 11:41, 15 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I'd also like to nominate Joyce Madkins Sumbi. I added a "citation needed" tag to the sentence I'd like to feature in the hook. If the source is offline, could you print out the relevant info for me? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 14:04, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see my note on the talk page of A. C. Bilbrew? Once that's taken care of, I could nominate that too. Yoninah (talk) 14:06, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah: Think I've addressed both questions now in the articles, with additional content and refs. Thank you! I love how the DYK process makes articles better. Penny Richards (talk) 15:19, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, your edits to Joyce Madkins Sumbi made my hook fact more speculation than fact, that she was the first black librarian to work directly with the public. Since I can't view the Binnie Tate Wilkin book, I'm not seeing more hooky facts to work with. Yoninah (talk) 15:50, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay.Penny Richards (talk) 16:00, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I don't know if you have the time for it, but when you have an oral history available online for someone like Joyce Madkins Sumbi, you can get a lot of personal detail off it. I just skipped around the first session, and added details of her early career. I'm mulling over a hook. Yoninah (talk) 16:37, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah: Aha, yes! No time today or tomorrow (holiday weekend here), but I'm glad to hear that it's accessible (I hadn't tried yet). I can try to listen later this week but if you find good stuff first, that's even better! Penny Richards (talk) 16:42, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

According to this source, her given name was "AC". Could you provide a cite for the longer name? Maybe the biographical section needs some tweaking. Yoninah (talk) 15:38, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that one, and she certainly used A. C. (or even "Aycee") in most contexts, which is why I titled the article with the initials. Right now I can't find where "Alice Caledonia" came from, so I'm removing that name until I get a chance to retrace my steps.Penny Richards (talk) 15:50, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think the page should be moved to AC Bilbrew. Yoninah (talk) 15:53, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. The vast majority of print references to her are to "A. C. Bilbrew" (and the library named for her), not "AC Bilbrew." A redirect would be appropriate, I'll do that. Penny Richards (talk) 15:57, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I nominated her at Template:Did you know nominations/A. C. Bilbrew. Could you please give me the text from the Watkins source that says the choir members appeared as cotton pickers? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:41, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah: Sure, that one's easy: "Among those who left the city last Sunday morning for location scenes, in Wm. Fox's 'Hearts in Dixie' all-colored cast picture, were some of Los Angeles' most renowned choristers, under the very able direction of Mrs. A. C. Bilbrew. They will supply the chief background for the plantation scenes--cotton pickers--then return to the studio to complete the sound arrangements." This is a quote from the California Eagle newspaper, found on pages 72-73 of Mel Watkins, Stepin Fetchit: The Life and Times of Lincoln Perry (Knopf Doubleday Publishing 2006). On Google Books. Or this link is for the original article, in Internet Archive: "Shooting Begun on 'Hearts in Dixie'" California Eagle (November 30, 1928): 8. Penny Richards (talk) 01:17, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I added the online link to the article. The DYK already passed! Yoninah (talk) 11:52, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! That's wonderful. I appreciate all your work on this. Penny Richards (talk) 15:15, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. (Please excuse this post if it is a duplicate!)

A-Z congratulations

I see you've finished another A-Z run - wonderful! And although I've been tracking your new articles and adding redirects and surname page entries, I hadn't noticed the A-Z sequence until Xenia and Yvette appeared yesterday - how's that for unobservant? I waited till Zona before congratulating you!

I see that you list "other names" in the infobox - please consider making redirects from those names too, and from other versions: every now and then they match an existing redlink, sometimes in the Women in Red lists of redlinks.

I'm not sure how useful surname pages are, but as they exist we ought to add women to them. Particularly for writers, academics, etc there's a chance that someone may find a mention of "Bloggs's work" and want to track down the "Bloggs". Unlike some other editors I don't bother adding new articles to birth date, death date, and given name pages - except for a few really unusual given names like Philadelphia and Xenia - as I can't imagine many readers searching that way. There are categories for birth and death years anyway. We all have our different ideas as to what is and isn't worth doing.

Congratulations again on producing so many good well-sourced articles, with the added quirk of A-Z sequencing. PamD 23:52, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Yes, I usually do redirects and surname pages when I get a chance; I'll spend my wikitime the next couple days doing some tidy-up jobs on the latest alphabet of articles. (They all get at least one incoming link to avoid orphan tags, but now I can go back and do a few more for most of them.) – Penny Richards (talk) 00:54, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Elizabeth L. Gardner

On 12 July 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elizabeth L. Gardner, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Elizabeth L. Gardner. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Elizabeth L. Gardner), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. I found some good group photos that include her. Would you like to have a look? The best are probably https://www.loc.gov/resource/hec.02822/ and https://www.loc.gov/resource/hec.36784/ and I'm pretty sure we could crop something out of one or both that'd look a bit better than the current lead image. MilHist contest

Hi Penny

I have noticed that you have tagged several articles for the contest, but not assessed them. Which seems a shame. Is there a reason for this? If not, would you like them to be tagged? I would be happy to do this, or to give you pointers so that you could do it yourself. Or you could tell me to mind my own business - whatever. Cheers.

Gog the Mild (talk) 03:07, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gog the Mild! Thanks for checking with me. I've never assessed an article, and don't really know how. I should probably learn sometime. Until then, I'm fine with other people doing it. Penny Richards (talk) 13:28, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. It is fairly straight forward, and when you feel like having a go, this pretty much says it all so far as MilHist is concerned. Gog the Mild (talk) 13:36, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to have been beaten to it on several, but have wrapped them up. A fine set of articles to browse through. Fanny Titus Hazen, which I didn't assess, has been allocated a C; I assume for want of a cite for her presidency of the National Association of Army Nurses of the Civil War. If you could add it and ping me I would be happy to upgrade. (Similar for Belle Coddington, but as I can't see a lack of a cite, I have already upgraded it.)
A couple of comments: every entry in an infobox starts with a capital letter - I have amended a couple; in one you accidently used "works", which refers to literary works, instead of "known for" - I tweaked it while I was there.
Gog the Mild (talk) 14:30, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gog the Mild Done! And thanks for the tips! Penny Richards (talk) 18:31, 22 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

 • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
 • Diversity winner
 • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Magda Brard

Dear Penny, Thanks a lot for your article about Magda Brard. I am an absolute beginner on Wikipedia (but a passionate reader and occasional financial contributor) and I would like to modestly contribute to your article by translating it into French and German which are my languages. Magda Brard is a special topic for me as she taught me to play the piano as I was a child, in Nice (in the 70‘s) in her huge apartment full of marvellous souvenirs until I was old enough to enter the Conservatoire. Anyways I don’t know how to proceed and I don’t know whether that would be useful to translate. Just let me know, Kind regards from Berlin (Germany) Lionel Baret LioPieBar (talk) 21:16, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@LioPieBar:: Hello! Thank you for the note. I think it would be amazing to have that article translated into French and German Wikipedia! And what a fascinating link you have to her. I haven't done any translations so I don't know the procedure, but I think since you already have a Wikipedia account, you're probably half-way there. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:JoannaLaSane1966Jet.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:JoannaLaSane1966Jet.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Hi, thanks so much for contributing to the Destubathon Penny, brilliant effort on those women bios, hope Ser Amantio's prize will allow you to buy some books once this crazy situation ends! I've started this challenge long term, I was wondering if you could copy the list of women bios and find any others which were done during the Destubathon and use them to start a sub challenge of this page with women bios destubbed. If we can get it off to a good start using entries done for the Destubathon it might pick up. Entries on women should go in the main list as well as the women list. But just so we can monitor the progress, I think it might be a good vehicle to improve quality long term. † Encyclopædius 20:19, 31 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pauline Phelps - Your article

Hello,

I'm doing family history and came across your article on Pauline Phelps;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_Phelps

Pauline is a side note in my family - in 1942 she was a mail order bride for a widower.

Question = should I add this to her Wikipedia page?

Thanks,

Ted

@Tedpoppke: Oh wow! Fun find. Thank you for letting me know. Is the marriage information published (in town records, a newspaper item, etc.)? Any information added to a Wikipedia article should have a published source (family lore is awesome, but not sufficient for a Wikipedia source). If it's not published anywhere, you could still add the information to the article's talk page; it might help the next visitor. Penny Richards (talk) 15:54, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Penny, Now I just got to learn about the infobox, thanks! I do most of my work on Ancestry.com and they are very good about sources and citations. Do you have an example of how to reference Ancestry.com in Wikipedia? I've done a light search. Ancestry often lists the primary source, but I don't have actual access to most of those.Tedpoppke (talk) 20:12, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In most cases you want to avoid using primary sources for references on Wikipedia articles--that can be construed as "original research" (see WP:Original). If you find a date on Ancestry.com, try to find a published source that backs it up, like a newspaper obituary or a biographical dictionary entry. Those are generally considered better references for Wikipedia. Penny Richards (talk) 20:55, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The 50,000 Destubbing Challenge Summer Focus of the Week

Hi, just to announce that I've filed a £250 grant request for a "Summer Focus of the Week" feature for destubbing articles which will be run from May 1 to the end of July. £20 is planned to be rewarded each week, £10 most articles destubbed for the allocated focus of the week and £10 for the most destubbed for any topic of choice in total, a full £20 if most for the focused area. While it is intended to be more relaxed and open than an official contest, allowing editors to take a break some weeks from staying on focus and editing as they normally do, the winner will be whoever wins the most prize money at the end, so it is likely that some weeks they will need to tackle entries from the regional area allocated. The Summer Focus of the Week is planned to commence on May 1 with a 10 day focus on SouthEast England but will cover many regions of the globe by the end of the scheme. S E England was originally planned as a full blown contest (which you signed up for) but it will now be run as part of this 50,000 Challenge and I will redirect the contest page to the 50,000 Challenge. Hope this will be something enjoyable over the next few months!† Encyclopædius 13:39, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. This is an invitation to join the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week. £250 (c. $310) up for grabs in May, June and July with £20 worth of prizes to give away every week for most articles destubbed. Each week there is a different region of focus, though half the prize will still be rewarded for articles on any subject. Sign up if you want to contribute at least one of the weeks or support the idea! † Encyclopædius 19:05, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mary Wollstonecraft Award

Mary Wollstonecraft Award
On behalf of WP:WPWW, thank you for creating the recent new article on Mary L. Day, whose writings continue to be studied as the works of a blind woman in nineteenth-century America. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:04, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I am honored. Wollstonecraft and I share a birthday, so she's always been my patron saint. :) Penny Richards (talk) 13:44, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well-deserved. Plus super cool that you share a birthday with her! --Rosiestep (talk) 15:30, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Marie-Aimée Roger-Miclos

That's happened to me more often than I can recall - I look someone up (usually a severely obscure 19th-century American composer) and find out that I was the one who created the article, several years in the past.

Incidentally, apropos of very little, I went grocery shopping last night, and discovered in the bottled-water aisle that they're marketing something called "Voss" water. All I could think was, what would Patrick White have to say? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:21, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It must happen to you very often! It's funny to find the little quirks of wording or formatting that I know are my own. Penny Richards (talk) 15:01, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Same - for me it's the little tricks of phrasing I use. And the sources - most of the composers are sourced to the same 1938 text. There are a lot of stubs out there whose only source is James Tasker Howard's Our American Music. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:15, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Digital Postcards and Certifications

Wikipedia Asian Month 2019
Wikipedia Asian Month 2019

Dear Participants and Organizers,

Because of the COVID19 pandemic, there are a lot of countries’ international postal systems not reopened yet. We would like to send all the participants digital postcards and digital certifications for organizers to your email account in the upcoming weeks. For the paper ones, we will track the latest status of the international postal systems of all the countries and hope the postcards and certifications can be delivered to your mailboxes as soon as possible.

Take good care and wish you all the best.

Thanks for the update! I received a lovely paper postcard from Taiwan already. Penny Richards (talk) 19:13, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Women with disability

Hi Penny. I've just been drafting a page for July's Women and Disability. Maybe you have more suggestions on redlists or redlinks. Please feel free to work on the page as you wish and communicate it to any interested parties. I note that last time round we had about 70 new articles and improvements. With your help, we may be able to do better this year. Don't know to what extent we can draw on those who were unable to take part in the Olympics.--Ipigott (talk) 15:50, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh excellent! I will have a look and start publicizing it and looking for more redlinks and lists. Thank you! Penny Richards (talk) 15:57, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your continuing efforts to improve the status of women at Wikipedia. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Rosiestep submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Penny Richards as Editor of the Week because of the over 1,200 articles she has created and also for her huge contribution to Women's biographies.
