Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

- User:SuperHamster and User:Titodutta on behalf of The English Wikipedia WAM Team

In appreciation

The Featured Article Medal
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this award in recognition of your working long and hard to bring a large, complex and important article to featured status. Impressive. Gog the Mild (talk) 18:11, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gog the Mild You know as well as anyone, that that would certainly have never happened without your nurturing me along (okay, and sometimes prodding me ;) gently). I cannot say enough how much I learned from the process and I thank you profusely for all of the coaching and support you have given since the article was first conceived a year ago (11 months). Along the way, you also introduced me to a bunch of editors I would probably never have encountered before, as well. It truly does take a village to grow a wp editor and I am very appreciative of you and your help. SusunW (talk) 18:19, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations, SusunW! Great effort. And well done to Gog for offering a helping hand. Regards, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:46, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And thanks to you both for reviewing it twice. So, Peacemaker67, I'm curious, is pacifism part of military history or not? My husband and I have debated this for days. SusunW (talk) 04:58, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, it was a pleasure. I think there is definitely a thread of pacifism amongst some veterans, perhaps due to having seen the brutal realities of war, knowing that it rarely solves anything, and not wishing it on others. Not true pacifism, I suppose, but a reluctance to engage in war unless absolutely necessary. The number of Australian Vietnam veterans who demonstrated against the Iraq War is an indication of that sort of view. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 05:43, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So far as MilHist is concerned, pacifism is included, as are all of the anti-war movements. Although tagging of them seems to be patchy. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are now eligible to apply for a Four Award and a Triple Crown. Can I encourage you to do so?

PS What are you nominating next for FA? You have plenty of quality articles to choose from. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

LOL, Gog the Mild. I have hardly caught my breath from the last one. The discussion came up because I was working on Rosika Schwimmer, an important suffragist from Hungary, internationalist and pacifist. She ended up being a "woman without a country" and impacted US immigration law. Had war never existed, her career would have taken an entirely different trajectory, so it seemed to me that at the very least, military history applied, but my husband argued that it was the opposite of military history, i.e. anti-military. (We love debate :)! ) Not sure what might be my next target, am currently trying to finish up a Japanese pacifist, turned supporter of Japan's WWII expansionism. As I've never heard of the above two awards, will have to look at the links. I also have about 8 articles nominated for GA, so am hoping to clear out that queue a bit. SusunW (talk) 21:57, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No sympathy from me - I currently have two articles at FAC and hope to have to have a third up by the end of the week. The area you work in needs more visibility and recognition. (You know that I realise. (Or even: I realise that you know that.))
I shall attempt to press a definitive answer out of the MilHist team.
Fascinating: the next year the Nobel peace prize went to a local hero of mine, Philip Noel-Baker, MP for the place I live.
Get your applications in. I shall personally fast track them.
Want to pick one of those GANs for me to have a look at? Preferably the one most likely to go on to FA.
Gog the Mild (talk) 22:15, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oldest to newest nominations pending: Marie Rennotte (Belgium/Brazil), Annie MacDonald Langstaff (Canada), Nino Tkeshelashvili (Georgia), Maria Grzegorzewska (Poland), Martha Watts (US/Brazil), Thung Sin Nio (Indonesia/The Netherlands), Alma Sundquist (Sweden), Marie Lang (Austria). Mine usually linger for a while because I tend to do international women, thus not a lot of English sourcing, so I indicated their places of origin. If you want to take one on, that would be lovely. Rennotte, seems to me to be FA material, but what do I know? By the way, I did the 4 Award thing, but I am not sure what the triple crown is. It's pretty confusing to me. What's the criteria? SusunW (talk) 22:36, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • My congratulations too, Susun, for all your efforts on Inter-Allied Women's Conference. It's now something of a masterpiece for covering the influence of women in the period covered. November 11 was certainly a good date for it to receive recognition. Now it remains to be decided when it should be featured on the main page. Any ideas?--Ipigott (talk) 15:51, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Ipigott. I truly could not have done it without the support of many. Specifically, your continued indulgence of assisting me with copyediting and translation "services" on almost every article I write, gives me the freedom to work on subjects I might not otherwise tackle. I don't know when would be the best date, but possibly for its 101st anniversary, Feb. 10th? Maybe by then Adam Cuerden will have finished restoring the lead photograph, which would be lovely. Just finished an article about Milagros Benet de Mewton, Adam Cuerden. I love the first photo because that dress is to die for, but the original image is probably not stellar to work from. The other one, though, is from the LOC. SusunW (talk) 05:39, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Kinda caught up in a few holiday things, but I WOULD like to get four more images by the end of the year for an even 100. I'm going to try... Might have to do a couple easier ones to make sure I get the number up there before the 20th, after which they'd promote in the new year. I am thankful for you Gerda Arendt. One of many things I have to be thankful for this year, is the amazing encouragement you give. SusunW (talk) 16:27, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, blushing ;) - Don't miss the happy image of an inspirational event, last one for Colin Mawby. It is great to have known hime. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:35, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, four award! When should that appear for TFA, 10 February 2020? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:29, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Gerda Arendt. I have no idea, but yes, I asked if it could be on the anniversary date in February. SusunW (talk) 17:33, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know where you asked, but I did here: WP:TFARP. IWD would be an alternative. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:41, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Der Ring in Minden finally appeared today, - my opera experience of the year. Part of the hook, "... to listen to the music at the end", would be a good motto ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:26, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's really cool that you were able to do so many articles/hooks about the same opera. Impressive body of work. SusunW (talk) 14:52, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, four nights of together almost 20 hours of music and action, - that's a lot! (... and my brother played the very beginning when the double bass players start alone with the lowest possible note on which all else is built). There were more articles before (including Dara Hobbs), and two have not yet appeared (Heiko Trinsinger and Julia Bauer), and today I plan to write about the woman who made it all possible. That will probably go to AfD but she deserves at least a try ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:00, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Thanks for your work on Catriona Macleod! QuakerSquirrel (talk) 01:00, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Four Award
Congratulations! You have been awarded the Four Award for your work from beginning to end on Inter-Allied Women's Conference. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:53, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Woo! Pretty. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:05, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well now that was all you, Gog the Mild. I didn't even know such things existed. Do you perchance have a minute to spare to "Britishize" (or is that Britishise?) Women's suffrage in India? Though Indian English is different, it does typically follow British spelling. If not, no worries. SusunW (talk) 16:14, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done, as you have noticed. It seems a bit low on images, maps, graphs etc; but pretty good. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:43, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Working on that, Gog the Mild. It's really hard. Mostly what you get on the net are British women of Indian descent who were involved in the British suffrage struggle. I have actually found two images of Indian suffragists in India, but cannot determine if they were published. Given that one is of the Montagu delegates and the other is of most of the women from the Constituent Assembly, they can be dated and are free in India, but whether they can be used in the US depends upon publishing. I have a friend in Mumbai who is trying to help see if more images are available on that side of the pond and if these two were published. Hadn't even thought of maps. That would be helpful, as a visual of the differences in the Raj provinces and princely estates (around 600 of them) will explain the magnitude of what women had to accomplish to gain their political rights. SusunW (talk) 16:52, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I had a quick scratch round and couldn't find anything. Some lovely maps in Women in India. but not one on suffrage. You could post a request at the Map Workshop Gog the Mild (talk) 17:00, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that Gog the Mild. Was looking at this one, but [1] it has far too much detail (rivers, mountains, deserts, well, lines) for my purposes. Hard to see which provinces and kingdoms were where. It may be that I need them to make it less busy, but maybe there is already such a thing. So I'll search for bit. Very true. Or File:British india.png? Gog the Mild (talk) 17:20, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(though I would prefer a }:) as you are indeed devilishly awesome). I was looking at the 2nd one when you posted your first find. It, however, doesn't include Burma, which was definitely part and the colors of your 1915 find, seem easier to delineate to me. SusunW (talk) 17:24, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to be of service ma'am. Gog the Mild (talk) 18:57, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Peace Dove

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. ―Buster7  17:03, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Sara Braun

On 14 December 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sara Braun, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that along with her business partners, philanthropist Sara Braun (pictured), one of the first businesswomen in Punta Arenas, Chile, was involved in the genocide of the Selk'nam people? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sara Braun. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Sara Braun), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

 — Amakuru (talk) 05:08, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that article! - I have a rather general question on a FAC: how much background? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:22, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Talk:Sara Braun. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:20, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

TFA

Hi Susun. You can now formally nominate Inter-Allied Women's Conference for TFA, here - Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests - under Specific date nominations. It should be straight forward, and your blurb is written. But ping if you find it confusing or daunting. Gog the Mild (talk) 23:43, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you want to propose for IWD ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:54, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, @Gog the Mild and Gerda Arendt:, but I haven't had internet access for the last week. However, that said, I am now a grand-aunt, woo hoo! I thought Gerda already nominated it here or is that something different? Limited time probably until after the first of the year, but I'll be around. SusunW (talk) 14:22, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Woo hoo! indeed . Yep, it's different; note the "pending" on the end. Needs cutting and pasting to the page I linked. Let me know if you would like me to do this for you. Gog the Mild (talk) 15:18, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But Gerda is correct. 8 March would be good. Gog the Mild (talk) 15:20, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would love you to do it for me Gog the Mild and thank you so much for asking that. We all know my technical limitations ;). And it doesn't matter to me if it's February 10th or March 8th, but perhaps the 2nd date would get more traction? SusunW (talk) 15:30, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The first step for that would be to move it in pending, to reserve the date. It was free when I last looked. Yes? Who? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:47, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I was bold and moved it in pending, because a woman was nominated for 9 February. A TFA nom can be made as soon as 8 Febr is scheduled (1 month in adveance that is). You can watch-list the red link right now. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:08, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Either date is a shoo in. 8 March is not yet taking requests, just expressions of interest. I am minded to move the article there. Ah, Gerda has already done so. All good. Gog the Mild (talk) 17:32, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to you both. :) SusunW (talk) 17:58, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Congratulations on becoming a grand-aunt. Is the newborn a grand-niece or a grand-nephew? (Actually the term grand-aunt was new to me. I've always called it great-aunt but that's probably British English.)--Ipigott (talk) 18:06, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott She's an adorable 3-week-early girl. SusunW (talk) 18:11, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations, SusunW. Such lovely news about your great-niece. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:27, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Rosiestep, pretty over the moon about it. SusunW (talk) 20:33, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

One more suffragist article is on its way!

Hi Susun -- I just wanted to let you know that I am finally (really) working on one last suffragist article (Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti), which I intend to nominate before the end of the year. So please don't feel that you have to rush with "Women's suffrage in India". :-) I've been having a hard time finding space in my life for Wikipedia editing this year (work has eaten up most of my time and energy), but I'm always inspired by the excellent efforts I see from you, Ipigott and others. I hope you enjoy the holidays, Alanna the Brave (talk) 20:47, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Alanna the Brave. Hope you have a lovely holiday too. The India article is finished except for photos, but with the protests going on there my friend hasn't been able to access the library which may hold the images we need. Obviously they can be added "after-the-fact" but I'd rather have them from the get-go, so am glad you are able to find time for Ransome-Kuti. Hope you have the time you need to work on it. SusunW (talk) 21:03, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Joy Harjo

Hi Susun. I've just been listening to an inspiring interview with Joy Harjo on BBC Outlook (starting around 26.30). As she comes from your part of the world, I was wondering whether you would be interested in improving her biography. As the first ever native American poet laureate, it seems to me she deserves special attention. No rush on this, of course. Just let me know if you're interested.--Ipigott (talk) 07:20, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fascinating interview, thank you Ipigott. Will see what I might be able to add over the next few weeks. SusunW (talk) 21:52, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your outstanding article creation. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Gog the Mild, User:Girth Summit and User:Buster7 have submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

Veteran editor SusanW has started a staggering number of quality articles, including 187 DYKs, 40 GAs and recently their first FA, virtually all of them aimed at increasing the representation of women on Wikipedia. Amazingly, their FA – on an important topic – was created from scratch less than a year ago and researched from recently uncovered documents - some barely in the public domain. A pre-eminently qualified teacher of the Art of Creating WP articles. The most modest and unassuming of Wikipedians, yet a tireless and skilled researcher. Knowledgeable, extremely productive and supportive, and keen to pass om praise and knowledge. Effusive in their appreciation of suggestions, assistance or assessments, they shy away from the more bruising aspects of Wikipedia. We think that a second EotW would be a fitting recognition of their continuing efforts.
