WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  • Hel, Poland Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  • Scotland Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Marshall Islands Nova Crystallis, Republic of Texas Iazyges, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack and United States Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best editor win! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Godot13, Sturmvogel 66, Vanamonde and Cwmhiraeth. Notice

The article Potiapunga lata has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

It is not notable enough, only a trivial source mentions it.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. McKeown and beetles

I could not find any evidence that Thomas McKeown (physician) named any species of Temnosternus beetle so I've removed this from six articles. A British epidemiologist naming Australian beetles is anyway unlikely - there was an Australian entomologist called Keith Collingwood McKeown, who's probably your man.[1] Fences&Windows 22:15, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alright then, thanks! If you aren't doing so, you may disregard my request not to point that thing at me. (talk) 01:12, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arius genus

Hi there Wilhelmina, in this edit you removed a species with the edit summary to the effect the species is a synonym for another one. OK, but which? - Nick Thorne talk 22:05, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikicup GAR submissions

Hi Wilhelmina Will. I want to let you know that I have declined two of your Wikicup submissions. While their byte-count may have been high enough, the other judges and I feel that if a reviewer finds an article to be that close to GA standard, then reviewing it doesn't merit points. This isn't a criticism of either the reviews themselves or your choice to submit them, but just a reminder that the byte-count is just a rule of thumb, and GAR points are generally awarded to reviews that have required more effort. Regards, Vanamonde (Talk) 20:38, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanamonde93: I truly do not appreciate your insinuation that I did not put all required effort into those reviews. It sounds suspiciously like a front. We Wikipedians only take NO for an answer! (talk) 20:43, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There's no insinuation. Some articles nominated at GAN are good enough that reviews take very little effort, just as some are nominated that are so poor that they can be failed with minimal effort. This has nothing to do with the diligence of the reviewer. This isn't the first review I've declined on these grounds, and it won't be the last. Vanamonde (Talk) 21:49, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, about your suggestion that I may be biased against you: since I could recall no interactions whatsoever, I just used Earwig's tool to look into whether we've had past conflicts. I cannot find any. Why exactly d'you think there's anything personal at play here? Vanamonde (Talk) 22:02, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying. All I am going to say in response to your question about why I thought bias might be present - because it's about as far as I can comment while still remaining in the levels of rationality that Wikipedia holds standard - is that there are boundless reasons why someone might hold bias against someone else, even online, without having previously had interactions with them.
From here out, I will accept that your intentions are to follow the rules, but in previous years I have submitted reviews that are of similar size, duration, and complexity to the ones I had so far submitted this year, and such reviews have been accepted before. My cause for suspicion originated from this point. In any case, areas where at least one other user and I must agree to disagree are always a sore spot for me, so I feel I might better serve Wikipedia if I withdraw from the WikiCup. I just don't need this, right now. We Wikipedians only take NO for an answer! (talk) 22:20, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I can only speak to submissions I have reviewed, and I have only been a judge since the beginning of last year. I was asked to become a judge after I expressed concerns over some of the material that had been passed during the year I competed. So, it is possible that our standards are now higher, but they are certainly not higher just for you. I would point out that a number of other submissions have been declined for various reasons this year alone, and I myself have declined multiple GA reviews in the last year. All I'm trying to do here is apply the rules even-handedly. I cannot and have no wish to compel you to be a part of the Wikicup, but if you believe that a single disagreement with a judge is a reason to withdraw, so be it; please confirm that, and one of us will do the needful. Vanamonde (Talk) 00:21, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Battaristis concisa‎ problem

You made an article called Battaristis concisa‎, and I like it. But, the second citation, is faulty. What was the 2nd citation's original URL? Thanks, TheSmartPersonUS1 (TSPUS1) (talk) 04:04, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you like the article, but if you look at the page's earliest revision, I am not the one who incorporated that source into the article. I don't know where it was supposed to go to, but the editor who included it might. We Wikipedians only take NO for an answer! (talk) 04:33, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, just letting you know that I've nominated this article, which you previously reviewed as a good article, to be featured. Since your review I've added a section on other versions (lithographs and a study), and believe it to be in good shape. If you would be interested in reviewing it again at FAC I would of course appreciate it, but regardless, thanks again for your review last year. WikiCup 2019 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • United States L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
  • Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
  • Denmark MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
  • United States Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
  • Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
  • Ohio Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! March GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles.

March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

She is one of the most prolific content creators Wikipedia has ever witnessed, as she has created an unbelievably incredible 57,699 articles, most of which are on insect and moth species. Besides having created an overwhelming number of 91 Did You Knows for the main page of Wikipedia, Wilhelmina Will has created a Featured Article on Miniopterus griveaudi and three Good Articles: Miniopterus mahafaliensis, Miniopterus griveaudi, and Susan Mayer. She has also created 19 categories to insect and moth species. Wilhelmina Will has reviewed a significant number of 122 Good Articles and numerous other articles at the Articles for Creation. Since Wilhelmina Will has significantly contributed to an expansive array of all kinds of activities on Wikipedia, I strongly advocate that she be adorned with one of the topmost awards on Wikipedia-the Editor of the Week award.
