User:Mz7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
:I nominate SuperHamster to be Editor of the Week. SuperHamster is the founder and current president of Wikipedia Connection, a student organization at The Ohio State University. In this role, he has coordinated off-wiki events that have benefited the Wikimedia projects and the Wikimedia community. These include "wiknics", workshops, edit-a-thons (about topics like art and feminism and women and computing), photography competitions. Beyond his outreach work, SuperHamster has written one good article, has had two DYK credits, and is a member of the OTRS team. He was also one of the organizers of last November's Wikipedia Asian Month. I feel that the kind of work that SuperHamster dedicates so much time and passion towards is occasionally overlooked by the community, especially since it is off-wiki, and for this reason, I recommend him without reservation to be the next Editor of the Week.
You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Thanks for uploading File:DDR Winx Club cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:19, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User:Jenniferrubin7

Note that I declined the CSD on User:Jenniferrubin7. Users are allowed to say a little about themselves in their user page. All it needed was a removal of the spam links, which I did. User already has a note about spam. -- Alexf(talk) 15:30, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexf: Thanks for the heads up - though it looks like another admin tackled the page and deleted it. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:27, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see. That came after. I did not think it was overly promotional. Just needed to have the spam removed. Thanks. -- Alexf(talk) 17:10, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Finding Book

Thanks for the quick response. I either missed that instruction or it is missing from help. Would certainly help if you could add it to help page. I've made a copy of your response and put it in several places so I won't have to ask again. You saved me a ton of work by not having to re-create the book. Again my thanks. ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by GLipsig (talk ā€¢ contribs) 16:11, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Error

Super hamster,

Any idea what happened here and how I fix: Generation of the document file has failed. Status: Rendering process died with non zero code: 1 Return to Special:Book

My book has 34 topics and I am sure several hundred pages long.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.37.58.116 (talk) 17:44, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Just a note that you're logged out, so remember to log back in before editing. I'm not too familiar with Wikipedia books, but it looks like the error you describe is a known bug. It doesn't look like there's one single fix unfortunately, but it has been noticed and will hopefully be fixed eventually...though the bug has existed for several months already.
It might be strenuous, but you may end up having to remove articles one-by-one until you find which article is the one causing the error. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:56, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Last Door

The Last Door. I didn't change much. But I added all the quotes. Too many quotes?

Wonderfl (reply) 11:24, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Wonderfl: Yea, I'd say so! It's usually best to integrate quotations within paragraphs, and to give context for each quotation. Ideally you'd give a mix of summarizing, paraphrasing and quotations, and I wouldn't expect more than one or two block quotes per article. The rule I like to go by is that each section should not just be a list of quotations; it should have its own text, which is supported by quotes. Check out Super_Mario_Galaxy_2#Reception_and_legacy for an example of how a review section should be laid out: a summary of each review, with short quotations here and there that support what's stated about each review. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:53, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is it better now? Quotes only in Gameplay and Reception. Wonderfl (reply) 14:04, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Getting better! Still, though, I would avoid listing long block quotes back-to-back in the Gameplay and Review sections. Integrate the quotations in paragraphs, and aim for one or two block quotes max. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 14:10, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tips! I'll checkup tomorrow and do what I can. Regards. Wonderfl (reply) 19:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem!Ā :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I could use some help with the rationale of File:The-Last-Door-Header.jpg. Its released by the authors with CC-BY-4.0 and so I tried to find a suitable tag. I'm sure I messed up the rationale though. What rationale is needed for CC images? -- Wonderfl (reply) 19:41, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Rationale is used to describe how we're using a copyrighted image under our fair use standards. If an image is freely licensed (by our standards), there's no need for rational since we're free to use it. You should replace the non-free data and rationale templates with Template:Information, and fill it in like you would other free images (a summary, author, source, etc.). Note that the source of the image needs to show that the image is freely licensed as you describe. If permission was emailed to OTRS for the image, let me know and I can help with that. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:45, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

XenMobile orphan tag

Hi! Thanks again for accepting my draft for XenMobile last week. I was hoping you might have a few moments to help me address the orphan tag on the article. I found two places to link to the entry.

The first is the main Citrix Systems article. XenMobile can be linked in either:

The second is in the HP Networking entry, which mentions XenMobile in the third paragraph of the Mobility/BYOD/WLAN section.

While I realize these are pretty minor, uncontroversial edits, I'm a stickler about not making any edits myself because of my COI. Would you be able to create these links? Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 17:58, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Heatherer: Ā Done Thanks for bringing this up! I've added the links to both articles, and have removed the orphan tag. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 00:47, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Aryan hindustan: I've removed the picture for now. A new section of an article should have some text to it, too, not just an image. That being said, you can add an image in the future with the following syntax: . Just replace "FILENAME" with the name of the file, and "CAPTION" with the image caption.
Also: Did you take the picture yourself? I ask because the file does not have proper information about its source or authorship. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:25, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

fyi

You tagged File:Quarterbacks_Angela_Rypien_and_Mark_Rypien.png with a di-replaceable fair use I left a .

I also tagged the instances where the image was used: [1], [2] -- a step I think you forgot.

Do you mind if I ask -- before you tagged the image, did you read the articles where it was used? Geo Swan (talk) 16:04, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Geo Swan: Sorry for the late response, been busy these last few days. I've never actually seen the caption template before, and am surprised it isn't documented at WP:CSD. I figure it's not required, but thanks for tagging them! I'll also do so in the future.
I did read the articles. I suppose that, yes, that exact scene could not be easily duplicated. It looks like the disagreements comes in with our takeaway of WP:NFCCP, and the fact that I don't see how the image is necessary to help our readers' understanding of the subject. Is the image valuable? I'd say so, and it certainly fits some of the themes you take from the article. I don't see how the image needed, however, as readers can entirely grasp the relationship between the Rypiens through text. The primary purpose of biographical portraits is for identification, and for that, there's still the possibility that it can be done with a free alternative.
That beings said, just a note that it looks like the image was deleted earlier by an admin. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:51, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRsā€”48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Response

Hello SuperHamster -- I found your message just now. Thank you for your word of welcome -- I am trying to get my bearings, working my way through a jungle of links containing directions and rules and admonishments and definitions. Initially I just wanted to add some information to my later father's Wiki page, but I now gather that this is no child's play, haha. Mabel Amber (talk) 21:59, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Mabel Amber: I received your email and responded thereĀ :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 00:01, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, I would never ever have thought of scrolling ALL the way down to the bottom of that very long page, never. I don't think I can ever accomplish anything on this website. This is too complicated for a simple IQ like I have. ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Mabel Amber (talk ā€¢ contribs) 00:31, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Mabel Amber: For future reference, new messages go at the bottom of pages. I did have a very long talk page, but I've now archives a few of them so the page is shorter. Don't get too discouraged - Wikipedia's site is definitely be harder to use than most. Takes some getting used to. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:43, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SuperHamster: Hello SuperHamster, thank you so much for your confirmation and encouraging words, I really appreciate your trouble and time. I shall dedicate myself to put in some work, likely the end result is rewarding. Thank you again, enjoy your weekend. Mabel Amber (talk) 10:35, 6 September 2015 (UTC) Sep 6 12.35 CEST[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Month

Hi Kevin. I just set up the Wikipedia Asian Month page on English Wikipedia, and want to invite you to be a organizer of this event.--AddisWang (talk) 20:50, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @AddisWang: Thanks for the invite! What sort of responsibilities does an organizer have? Sounds like a great opportunity, but I've got a lot on my plate and I'd hate to sign up for something I don't have the time to put towards! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:09, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A few things, check the articles if fulfill the criteria. I will do this job as well, as well as other organizers. No need to do it until the ending of event. @AddisWang: For sure - never really thought of the idea that other language Wikipedias would be less restrictive on central notices. We'll definitely talk about it in the workshop - until then, I'm headed to bed. Night! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:50, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I'm very excited that Wikipedia Asian Month has many great articles already in the first ten days. To better help us understand how we are we doing on Wikipedia Asian Month, here are some small tasks:

  1. Please update the data of your Wikipedia at m:Wikipedia Asian Month/Data, it does not need to be accurate.
  2. A few Wikipedia has join the WAM, you can update it on the local page. Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bulgarian Wikipedia, Cantonese Wikipedia, French Wikipedia, Latvian Wikipedia, Sindhi Wikipedia, Spanish Wikipedia and Vietnamese Wikipedia.
  3. Try to get some media coverage on your local medias. Report the media coverage and find resources at here.
  4. There is a user box that you can encourage participants to put on their user page. m:Template:User Asian Monthā€Ž

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. One Week Left!

Hi there!

Thank you for volunteering to organize Wikipedia Asian Month - we are doing something amazing! We are expecting to have 1,000 participants improving over 1,500 articles, possibly making Wikipedia Asian Month the largest long-term edit-a-thon ever. Here are a few tasks that need to be completed at the end of the event, as well as some tips you can take to achieve greater success.
Requirements:

  1. Check all submitted articles before 15th December, 2015, and send me a data set that includes: total number of submitted articles, number of qualified articles, total number of participants, and articles selected for DYK. For the few Wikipedias that allow article expansions, please also send me the number of new articles vs. improved articles. Use this page to submit results.
  2. List all qualified organizers, up to five on each Wikipedia. Qualified organizers are ones who work actively; those who only have their name on the page or just made a few constructive edits for the event (less than, say, 5-10 edits) will not be counted. Due 20th December, 2015. Use this page to submit organizers.
  3. List all qualified editors who can receive a postcard on here at meta. Also, please determine the Wikipedia Asian Ambassador of this year. For some Wikipedias, we are also honoring the second greatest contributor as an ambassador, as long as they have created at least 30 articles. Please talk with me about these potential additional Ambassadors. Due 25th December, 2015. Use this page to submit Ambassadors.
  4. Create a local results page. A sample page will be provided soon. Due 30th December, 2015.

Tips and Extras:

  1. Place WAM talk 2015 on talk pages of qualified articles to record that it was created as a part of Wikipedia Asian Month. If your Wikipedia does not have an equivalent template, make one! See this talk page example to see the template in action.
  2. Translate the message at this page. This message will be sent to all participants on your local Wikipedia to encourage their participation. Let me know when you finish the translation. For some Wikipedias that have fewer editors, you can send it by yourself.
  3. If you haven't started to check articles, try to give at least one result to each participant to let them know their contribution are qualified, or why they do not qualify.
  4. If you find out that some editors on your local Wikipedia are editing Asian Content but haven't sign up yet, send them a short invitation to ask them join. All edits made in November will be counted regardless of when the editor signed up.

Rules Clarification:

  • Since it is hard for organizers to keep the checking process very quickly, and may cause some editors who submit five articles being told one of their article does not qualified after the end November. We will still send postcards to those who submit five articles but one of those does not qualified with a minor problem. Minor problems include:
    1. Needs a few words to reach 300 words.
    2. Has a less-important issue tag.
    3. Needs to count one or two edits in the end of October or beginning of December to be qualified.

Best Wishes,
Addis Wang

WAM

Hi there Kevin. I'm going to be direct here. I have 2 queries.

  1. How do I know that my article fulfills the requirements. (There hasn't been any review from 24 November). Is there any way I can check that?
  2. Is this in Simple English Wikipedia alive?

Thanks in advance and please, notify me/use a talkback message after you reply this.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:33, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notifying @Titodutta: here. --Pratyya (Hello!) 13:43, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Pratyya Ghosh: Thanks for your questions. I use Dr pda's prosesize tool to calculate page sizes and word counts. I recommend that you install it and use the tool yourself to easily see if your contributions meet WAM's requirements. It's a useful gadget to have for general use after WAM, too. As for WAM on the Simple English Wikipedia: I didn't even know that was going on! I didn't sing up as an organizer there (it looks like the page was simply copied over from the English Wikipedia), and I've removed myself from the list there. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's active there either. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:42, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Pratyya, I have checked your lone article. Your article is tagged with copyvio template, it might be a Wikipedia>>Mirror>>Wikipedia's sub article issue. Please check it. --Tito Dutta (talk) 11:49, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Tito da, that copyvio is not actually my creation but it was previously at 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Finals. I moved that to 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Knockouts to create a free space for 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Final. Rather than this I don't know if there's a problem with my other works. Though the 2007, 2014 and 2013 CT is not my creation but it was under 4K bytes and didn't have 300 words. I actually increased these articles to 4K+ bytes and 300+ words.
PS: what did you mean by "lone article"? --Pratyya (Hello!) 14:29, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wrap-up

Hi there!

We made it! The first edition of Wikipedia Asian Month has successfully ended! While your efforts are still needed since the wrap up stage is another big challenge for us. I understand everyone is busy in December, I will trying to cover everything we need in this message, hopefully can make this easier.
Guideline

  1. Check all submitted articles before 15th December, 2015.
    1. When you do so, please make a category that includes all articles of WAM. My approach is using the WAM talk 2015 on the talk page of all articles, and generate a category for talk page.
    2. If you already submitted result on this page, please take a look that I add another column for articles selected for DYK. It could take a while for DYK process, you can fill that column later.
    3. You don't need to provide bytes column since I'm looking for a easy way to not brother us too much.
    4. When you checking articles, if you ever find an article submitted about Bashkortostan, Russia, please list them out. Bashkortostan community would like to send a postcard to whoever create that article.
  3. As you submit the qualified participants on this page, please also use P, O and A to mark them so I can know how many postcards should they receive. P(Participant), O(Organizers), A(Ambassadors). Please review the page if you submitted already. This is due 25th December, 2015 as previously mentioned.
  4. We will make a barnstar for whoever contribute to Wikipedia Asian Month, a user box for whoever accomplish the mission, and a ribbon bar for Ambassadors. It will be distribute after we have all qualified editors.
  5. You can find me on Facebook as Addis Wang, easiest way to talk with me for any questions or need my assistance. Leaving a message on meta is another option.

Further Actions

  1. You are welcome to submit an blog post draft for Wikimedia Blog at here about Wikipedia Asian Month in your local community, a specific story is more welcomed. I will help on that, and maybe integrate stories from different communities together to make a enough length articles. So don't hesitate to submit a short paragraph.
    1. A specific story about WAM. Like how some volunteers contribute in the event makes them special.
    2. A one sentence statement from you or participants about how you feel about Wikipedia Asian Month; why you like the event; what do you think we need to improve next year
    3. A short introduction about your community if it has not been introduced yet on Wikimedia Blog. Goals, current problems, why your community special etc.
  2. Sorry for the rough pages on meta. I will make a more beautiful page for all organizers and Ambassadors to honor their great contribution for Wikipedia.
  3. Next year: Many communities show their interest to hold this event again next year. We want to plan it in advance. If you represent a Wikimedia affiliate in Asia, please considering to include around 100 U.S. dollars in your annual grant application or similar. So Wikipedians around world can have a taste on your country or region next year! A mail list will be set up and inform you in next update. We will definitely make this event easier to participant next year, and improve our tool to give a better experience for both organizers and participants.

My Best Wishes and appreciation,
Addis Wang

That IP

Can't really do a rangeblock with the two IPs, one of which an IPv6. Do you have a list of IPs that have been used? Did we ever have an SPI, or a registered account? I don't think so but I could be wrong. If there are frequently targeted articles, we can semi-protect, of course. To put it another way, sorry, there's really nothing I can do right now; there's no point in blocking that IP. If you have more (articles, IPs), ping me and we'll see what we can do. Take it easy, Drmies (talk) 03:19, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Drmies: Thanks for the quick response! SPI investigations from months ago are here; past ANI reports (that include IPs) are here and here. I'm busy ATM with last minute school things, but I'll keep an eye out for the next few days and will see if page protections are necessary. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 03:43, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Last-minute school things? A student asked me Tuesday if he could have a conference with me about his paper, for which he had just changed topics. Tuesday was the last day of class; the paper was due the day before. Don't be that student! Drmies (talk) 04:33, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies: Wow! I won't be that student. I might be working on this group project until 1:49 tomorrow when it's due at 1:50, but it will not be late, I can promise you that. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:02, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Final Stage

Happy New Year!

We are now at the final stage of the Wikipedia Asian Month, which means, we are collecting the address and ready to send postcards. There are basically three things left.

  1. The survey of address collecting is ready, please consider to translate the survey at this page if you are not sure all qualified participants have capability to finish this English survey.
  2. After you translate it, or not, please distribute the survey link with, or without, the page of tranlsation to qualifeid particpants on your Wikipedia. Please make sure the list are also in this page so we can know who is the qualified participants who are organizers. Please update this page once you finish the distribution.
  3. We have a barnstar for whoever submit one article in the event. Please consider to distribute this on your Wikipedia if it haven't done yet. And please update this page as well.

Sorry for all the delays and thank you for being part of it. Please subscribe the mail list for future collaboration in Asia, and for Wikipedia Asian Month in 2016.

Best Wishes,

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of Adam Cuerdenā€™s several quality restorations during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Speedy deletion nomination of Milgram obedience study

Hello SuperHamster,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Milgram obedience study for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Vinod 08:59, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation from WAM 2016

Hi WAM organizers!

Hope you receive your postcard successfully! Now it's a great time to sign up at the 2016 WAM, which will still take place in November. Here are some updates and improvements we will make for upcoming WAM. If you have any suggestions or thoughts, feel free to discuss on the meta talk page.

  1. We will launch a pre-event, which is new-user exclusive training event, that will help new users get involved in the Wikipedia community and contribute more in the Asian Month.
  2. We want to host many onsite Edit-a-thons all over the world this year. If you would like to host one in your city, please take a look and sign up at this page.
  3. We will largely improve the tool, that participants can directly report their contribution on the tool, and will be easier for judges to use.
  4. We will try to send Ambassador certificate physically this year, as well as awarding second and third participants with a WAM button.
  5. We will pre-made all postcards and souvenirs, so we can send them all immediately after the event.

If you no longer want to receive the WAM organizer message, you can remove your username at this page.

As always, reach me at meta talk page if you have any questions.

Best Wishes,
Addis Wang

You're invited! Great Buckeye Wiknic 2016

Hello there! You are invited to attend the Great Buckeye Wiknic in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, July 10th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM! Join us for a day in the park for food and socializing with others from the Wikimedia movement. We'll be meeting up at Fred Beekman Park, a park on Ohio State University's campus.

If you're interested, please take a look at our events page for more information, including parking info, food options, and available activities. If you plan on attending, please add your name to the attendees list. We look forward to seeing you!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave one on my talk page. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:39, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(Note: If you would like to stop receiving notifications regarding Wikimedia events around Ohio, you may remove your username from this list.)

Since there's nowhere on the meetup page to say this ā€” I won't be able to attend, as attendance at the event would prevent me from being at church. Please keep me updated on future meetups, though. Nyttend (talk) 12:32, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Trust me... a chance to visit hollowed ground (OSU) would be a great opportunity. Unfortunately, this little thing called real life prevents me from making the trek to C-Bus on that date (pesky responsibilities and what not). But I do appreciate the invite. Inkscape feature table

Recently a user deleted a feature list from Inkscape, citing WP:CHANGELOG. I improved the format, restricting the content to notable features, and re-added it into the article. The editor insists on deleting it. However the exact kind of table is present in Illustrator, a very similar software. What should be done? Can you add your opinion to the talk page? -- Wonderfl (reply)

Hey @Wonderfl: Nice to hear from you! And I'm glad to see your continuing work on software articles. Let me think on this; WP:CHANGELOG is a valid concern, but limited change logs can still be valuable depending on the case.
On another note, as a tip: pointing to another article and stating bias against something can start fires. It all comes down to discussing the contentĀ :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:26, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Someone pointed me to the project you're working on. Good idea! But seeing that I've personally photographed 95% of Ohio's National Register sites, including most of the ones with on-wiki pictures uploaded by other people, I guess I should apologize for leaving less stuff for the WLM group to doĀ :-) More seriously, would you consider trying to point the project toward illustrating individual municipalities and townships? See User:Nyttend/Ohio, where I'm tracking municipalities and townships that don't have any representative pictures; more than 90% of townships and municipalities statewide have photos, but nearly 200 locations in 29 counties have no photos yet, and any assistance would be quite helpful. Nyttend (talk) 02:27, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Nyttend: Glad you caught wind of it! I've seen the awesome work you've done photographing historic sites across Ohio (which is also one of my personal inspirations for going along with the project), and I hope you can join us in September! I'm planning to send out a mass-invite to Ohio-area Wikimedians soon.
I did notice our great coverage of our NRHP sites (thanks to you and others!). Nonetheless, I've compiled a list of all the NRHP sites that we're still missing here. If you have any insights as to why some may not have photos beyond no one getting around to them (e.g. demolishing, restricted, etc.), feel free to add notes.
I love the idea of illustrating individual municipalities/townships. That's an awesome list you've generated. Alongside creating articles, I think tackling that list can be one of the "side goals" of WLM in Ohio. I'll see how to best fit it into the event page over the next couple days.
As you may have seen, I'm also trying to push our WLM scope to include historic sites that are documented by state and local groups (assuming this is all right with WLM's organizers). This not only gets around the issue of our federal NRHP sites being well-covered, but it also encourages exploring and documenting important historical sites that have been identified on the local level. This includes our Remarkable Ohio sites, as well as sites designated by local historical societies. See this list for some specific examples.
All of this is a first to me, so if you have any ideas or suggestions with your knowledge of Ohio and its history, feel free to provide them and make changes to the event page yourselfĀ :) Any additional lists of local historical sites are very welcome. Likewise, depending on how involved you wish to be on the organizing-side of things, absolutely feel free to add yourself to the list of organizers. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:16, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm on the road today, heading to West Virginia and beyond [see how early in the morning the timestamp is], so I'm hoping to get a few images out of Meigs County at some point in the morning. The southeast and the northeast are by far the biggest areas of need, as far as the municipalities/townships are concerned; if anyone in your group is from those regions (even metro Cleveland has lots of unillustrated places!), it would be quite helpful. Yes, I saw how you're interested in state/local landmarks; that's an interesting idea. I did my grad work at IU Bloomington, so I did a good deal of work on Indiana historic sites (I photographed every National Register site in the state, except for six on a military reservation), including creating list of Indiana state historical markers and a subpage for each of the 89 counties with at least one marker; it was patterned after a similar setup in Pennsylvania. I initially considered doing such a thing for Ohio, but with far more markers than Indiana, it was more than I had time to do, but it sounds like a good group project. Just one note: pre-1978 historical markers are virtually always PD-US-no notice (I've never seen a marker with a copyright notice), but anything later is still under copyright, so it's virtually always better to get images of the subject being commemorated (if the marker's commemorating something nearby), or a distant shot of the marker with its main inscription not legible, instead of getting a closeup of the marker itself; see what I did with the "Rhodes Family Incident" marker at List of Indiana state historical markers in Hamilton County. Copyright to marker texts has been an issue for at least one list of historical markers: see Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2009 May 17 and the history of List of New York State Historic Markers in Cortland County, New York. Nyttend (talk) 09:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Nyttend: Great note regarding copyright, I'll add it to the event page. And thanks for expanding on the list of missing NRHP sites. Safe travels! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 12:49, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/PAHMC is also relevant. And you're quite welcome! There may be a few unillustrated sites not on the list; I took this from my directory, and I know there have been a few new listings (two or three in Dayton, among others) that I've not yet put into my directory. Nyttend (talk) 13:33, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Nyttend: Fascinating stuff - always interested in learning about new interesting copyright casesĀ :) And thanks for your directory, too - a "side goal" of ours will also be to create and expand articles related to historical monuments, and your list of missing articles is Thumbs up icon. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:03, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! You'll note that sites are separated between "in the book" and "not in the book", with the "in" places having numbers; those refer to places that appear in [3], and the numbers are the pages on which the sites appear. By the way, if you point people to my directory, please ask them not to modify it; I'd rather decide for myself whether an article's long enough to be removed from the "short stubs" sectionsĀ :-) Nyttend (talk) 23:24, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nice picture

at Pioneer Woman. Are you aware that the USA does not have freedom of panorama? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:42, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Carptrash: Not my picture actually, someone else uploaded it for Wiki Loves MonumentsĀ :) I'm aware - do you have and knowledge of whether or not the sculpture was published with a visible copyright registration? I (perhaps wrongly) assumed not. Probably should err on the side of caution until it can be verified. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:19, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The issue that I have run into is not about the photographer but the sculptor. All sculpture in the USA created after 1923 is potentially copyrighted. Now there are loop holes, something as old as this, though created after 1923 needs to have been renewed. Checking for renewals is a messy job that I rarely do any more - choosing mostly to not post sculpture pictures anymore. I assumed (and we all know what a black hole that can be) that is was your picture and I thought I'd just mention the no freedom-of-panorama thing just so that you were aware. So much for the "Land of the Free." Anyway I'd just leave it alone but there is a chance that looking at the history of that article you might find that I had a very similar picture removed, either by someone else or by me as a precautionary measure. It appears to me that "wiki Loves Monuments" might turn out to be a copyright nightmare, but that's someone else's tar baby, unless you think it sounds like a good time, in which case, go for it. WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

WAM Organizers Update (Nov.5)

Hi WAM Organizer! Hopefully everything works just fine so far! Need Help Button, post in any language is fine

  • Here are some recent updates for you, and as always, let me know if you have any idea, thought or question.
    • IMPORTANT: Asian Language Wikipedia will exclude the language speaking country from the Asian Month so we can encourage editors write something about other part of Asia. E.g., Chinese Wikipedia will exclude Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Indian language Wikipedia will exclude India. If you have problems with that, please let me know.
    • I've posted the tool instruction and newest postcard rules on each Wiki' event page. Make sure you translate it. In short: 4 articles get one card, 15 get another one (Special one), and the Ambassador gets another one.
    • We will still allow two Ambassadors if top and second contributors have more than 30 accepted articles, just like last year. Please send this information to high-quantity participant to encourage them.
    • Please create this talk page template and linked in Wikidata. Judging tool will add this template to submitted articles automatically.
    • The judging tool should work fine. If not, talk to me.

Joining WAM

Greetings of the day

I had a few queries regarding WAM. I enrolled to Wikipedia editing for first time, when I saw the WAM November notice on the Wiki Pages. I intend being a participant in the WAM. Please guide me with the necessary registrations and sign-ups. Thank you.

Regards ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Randomlyexisting (talk ā€¢ contribs) 04:47, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Randomlyexisting: Thanks for your question, and welcome to Wikipedia! I have left you a welcome message on your talk page that links to some basics of Wikipedia editing. You can sign up for Wikipedia Asian Month by heading to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month and clicking the blue "Sign up now" button. Here, you can edit the section your name belongs to and place #Randomlyexisting there to sign up. After that, you should read the rules of the event, and submit any articles you create to this tool. If you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask. Since you are just joining Wikipedia, I recommend giving the Wikipedia Adventure a runthrough to learn some of the basics of editing. Cheers! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:53, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WAM Organizers Update (Nov.12)

Hi WAM Organizer! Hopefully everything works just fine so far! Need Help Button, post in any language is fine

  • Here are some recent updates for you, and as always, let me know if you have any idea, thought or question.
    • Additional souvenirs (e.g. Stickers, bookmarks) will sent to Ambassadors and active organizers.
    • I'm doing some basic statistics at Result page every week, in case you are interested.
  • I've already sent noticfication to global top 20 users that WMF will give global top 3 contributors a free Wikimedia T-shirt. Here are the rules:
    • A participant's article count is combined on all language Wikipedias they have contributed to
    • Only Wikipedia Asian Month on Wikipedia projects will count (no WikiQuote, etc.)
    • The global top 3 article count will only be eligible on Wikipedias where the WAM article requirement is at least 3,000 Bytes and 300 words.
    • Please make sure enforce the rules, such as proper references, notability, and length.
    • International organizers will double check the top 3 users' accepted articles, so if your articles are not fulfilling the rules, you might be disqualified. We don't want it happened so please don't let us make such a decision.
    • Rest of Global top 10 users will also get some WAM souvenirs.

Best Wishes,

WAM Tool Update

Hi WAM organizers, due to unexpected maintenance on wmfLabs, which host our judging tool, the tool is currently down and can not be used in around next 48 hours or less. Please inform local participants for such problem, and tell them they can submit their contribution after the maintenance. I will send another update when the tool comes back. If you have further questions regarding the tool, please feel free to reach me or the tool developer Le Loi. New Page Review needs your help

Hi SuperHamster,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Update (Nov. 16)

Hi WAM organizers! It's now half way! Good job! Here are some updates:

  • As many of you may notice, that the judging tool has came back to normal.
  • I've set up a result page with some numbers in it. It may not accurate, just as a reference at this time.
  • WAM should get more media coverage. If you can help (either locally or internationally), please let me know!
  • Please considering start judging articles if you have not yet. it's really important to give feedbacks to participants so they can improve articles or get motivated.
  • With your help, I may start the first round of address collection before WAM ends for who already have four accepted articles and organizers, as I promised to improve the postcard sending process this year.
  • Feel free to reach out to me for any question! At my meta talk page.

Best Wishes,
Adds Wang

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, SuperHamster. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Participates still can submit their contribution in November before December 2nd at this page. Please let your local wiki participates know. Once you finish the judging, please update this page after December 5th
  • There will be three round of address collection scheduled: December 2nd, December 7th, and December 20th.

Hello, thanks for the invitation (6 months ago), and thanks for the photos I used!

I just created the article for the church I spent until about age 11 going to, St. John's Episcopal Church (Worthington, Ohio). In perusing the Wikimedia Commons for photos (c:St. John's Episcopal Church (Worthington, Ohio)), I noticed that several of them had your name (well, your Wikimedia Commons and real name, that is) attached to them, so was going to say "nice work/photos." But when I went to that user page and saw "SuperHamster" I started racking my brain to remember where I had seen it before. It's because I liked your signature (~SuperHamster) from when you invited me in June or July to the Wiknic (that I almost went to because I work on west campus anyway, but was busy that dayĀ :-( ), so I copied it and put it on my Sandbox for future reference/customization learning.

Well anyway, having just put all the pieces together of who you are and such, I just wanted to say nice photos (even though I went with Nyttend's photo for the main image), and that, now that I realize where I recognize the name ~SuperHamster from, just a simple "thank you" for any and all of your contributions so far! PolymathGirl (talk) 06:46, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Bush6984: Hey there! Sorry for the late reply, and thank you for the kind words!Ā :) Great job with the article. I actually snapped a couple pics of it, alongside several other sites, while exploring the Columbus area for Wiki Loves Monuments - unfortunately the lighting wasn't the best when I visited the church. Nyttend has done a fantastic job of photographing historic sites all around Ohio and beyond over the years.
On another note, I noticed you joined the course page for Wikipedia Connection - if you're interested, you are welcome to attend any of our weekly workshops or edit-a-thons throughout the semester! In particular, next semester we will be hosting an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon on March 1. If you'd like to be kept up to date on our events and happenings, you're welcome to join our mailing list here. Cheers, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:50, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup December newsletter: WikiCup 2017

On 1 January 2017, WikiCup 2017 (the 10th Annual WikiCup) will begin. This year we are trying something a little different ā€“ monetary prizes.

For the WC2017 the prizes will be as follows (amounts are based in US$ and will be awarded in the form of an online Amazon gift certificate):

  • First place ā€“ $200
  • Second & Third place ā€“ $50 each
  • Category prizes ā€“ $25 per category (which will be limited to FA, FL, FP, GA, and DYK for 2017). Winning a category prize does not require making it to the final round.

Note: Monetary prizes are a one-year experiment for 2017 and may or may not be continued in the future. In order to be eligible to receive any of the prizes above, the competing Wikipedia account must have a valid/active email address.

After two years as a WikiCup judge, Figureskatingfan is stepping down. We thank her for her contributions as a WikiCup judge. We are pleased to announce that our newest judge is two-time WikiCup champion Cwmhiraeth.

The judges for the 2017 WikiCup are Godot13Ā (talkĀ Ā· contribsĀ Ā· email), CwmhiraethĀ (talkĀ Ā· contribs), and SturmvogelĀ 66Ā (talkĀ Ā· contribsĀ Ā· email).

New Page Reviewer granted

Hello SuperHamster. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog (around 13,500 pages) down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. ā€” xaosflux Talk 23:07, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I'm having some issues with senior editor User:Iryna_Harpy on the article Andre Vltchek. Specifically, this user has been reverting my edits for no reason since Oct 2016. She has been adding false "issue" tags to the article and when I remove it my edits are reverted. I then started improving the article by adding citations, removing uncited statements, and so on, but she reverted 12 of my edits in one go. Can you please add your voice to Talk:Andre Vltchek#Suspicious edits on this article? Thank you. Wonderfl (reply) 07:20, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for your dedicated on- and off-wiki efforts. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Mz7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate SuperHamster to be Editor of the Week.
