A good way to catch newbie-biters

I'll admit I was a bit snarky in the edit summary (sorry!), but I knew the information added was factually correct (or at least verifiable) - how many other editors would have just gone "rv - unsourced" and walked away? And that's from a user who's not particularly a newbie, and (from their edit summaries) who understands at a real-world level what verification is, even if they don't know the magical voodoo incantations of <ref>{{cite web|url=blahblah.com|title=This|author=That|complexparameternobodyunderstands=TheOther .... }}</ref>. Wikipedia, the institution, has no sense of humor, as has been demonstrated many times. Wikipedians, the people, are human beings (thank God) and do have a sense of humor. (So does God.) What ticks me off is people adding vandalism for the express purpose of then posting an image or embedded imprint of it on Twitter or other social media. It then spreads around the internet before anybody can revert it. Urgh. :-/ (Of course, it also alerts Wikipedians who happen to see the posting to fix the thing [hopefully].) Since rescuing articles to do with women in film seems to be a passtime of mine recently, could one of you lovely talk page stalkers (and Carl Henderson) please have a look at Anya Camilleri and see if you can give it a boost? I've been able to add some content, including her earlier BBC TV movie "Two Golden Balls" and more information about "Satisfaction"—and the fact that it was never filmed, and on her marriage to her NY-LON and Satisfaction collaborator Simon Burke. I've found a bio at her agent's site, but am not sure if that would be considered a reliable source for basic biographical information. I'd appreciate some advice on that question. The relevant bit of policy is WP:SELFPUB, which is what I would think her agent's official biography falls under. You can add basic facts, such as what films or TV shows she was involved in, or schools attended, but not much else. A good way of looking at it is if you've ever been asked as a reference for a former co-worker, the sort of things you'd be allowed to say there are roughly the same as my interpretation of this policy - basic, uncontroversial facts. I used to drive across the Snake Pass at least once a week in the summer when I worked in Sheffield, so your GA nomination jumped out at me. But even the Woodhead Pass wasn't reliable in the winter. I got stuck there once behind a lorry that had jack-knifed on the ice on its descent, which closed the road for hours. It's bitterly cold up there. Eric Corbett 21:53, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Snake is a wonderful drive in the summer when you've got all the time in the world, but I can well believe that goes out of the window the minute commuting comes into it. This stuff didn't make the article, but back in the 70s, Joy Division and Human League used to trade gigs off each other, presumably so they didn't have to cart a full PA over the Pennines, and Hooky remembers travelling in a Transit (?) up Snake Pass towards Sheffield wondering if the van was actually going to survive to the top.

I also know a couple of freight drivers and I'm pretty sure the recommended route for any farms in Lincolnshire to the whole Greater Manchester area is via Sheffield and Woodhead, going via the M62 over Scammonden is just too out of the way and fuel heavy to be cost effective. So the whole road is bunged up with HGVs all the way through Longendale and Mottram. Coming the other direction along the M67 tells you everything you need to know about British transport policy - great fast road for a few miles, then it just gives up and dissolves into total crap. And as for the trains, great, let's reopen the Woodhead Tunnel, oh wait, it's full of electrical cables. Bugger. Hi Ritchie333, it's great to hear from you! I do like to work on Yes/Genesis articles but my writing is never up to GA quality. First off, thank you for working on The Yes Album. I was amazed someone took it from the mess that it was to GA in such little time! You have a good, unique way of developing articles which I like. Nice development on Trick, and please feel free to work on Wind & Wuthering as like I said, my writing is not as succinct. Duke pains me as I had such a big edit going, with lots of references from the 2007 reissue interviews, only to have the whole thing swiped by power outage. This has happened to me far too many times. I guess little by little edits are the way forward for me now! I do have Bowler and Dray as well as the Genesis 2007 book, but I use articles from The Genesis Archive. LowSelfEstidle (talk) 14:45, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

@LowSelfEstidle: Thanks! I got Bowler and Dray book brand new (then lost it and bought another one second hand on eBay recently), around the time The Way We Walk, Volume Two: The Longs came out. I knew the 80s Genesis well from just hearing them all over the radio (you could be living as a rock hermit and you'd still hear Phil Collins), but it was only really the "Old Medley" on this that sought me to dig out all the old albums. I spent at least the next decade and a bit moaning that Genesis lost it after Hackett left, but I then remembered that the "Duke" suite is great, and the 80s albums are actually good, and just suffer from being over-familiar. So nowadays I like bits of all Genesis, broadly construed, and it means I can tackle something like Selling England by the Pound to GA without overloading it with an excessive fan's POV that some of these sorts of articles suffer from. Anyway, I'll chip away at Duke a bit more; I've got stuck trying to source the last few bits of Trick of the Tail.

GAs are not too difficult once you've done a bit of work on here, as long as you understand the core policies of WP:V, WP:NPOV and WP:NOR, the entire article complies to it (which usually, but not necessarily, implies everything gets sourced to an inline cite) and if you can write a succinct reply on a talk page that doesn't get misunderstood, then your prose skills are probably up to the task. Even then, prose is easy to fix in a GA review, structure, POV and sourcing issues aren't! Ritchie333 ^{(talk) (cont)} 15:28, 12 April 2015 (UTC)#

@Ritchie333: The 1992 "Old Medley" has actually grown on me since the first time I heard it. They could never make the "Stagnation" excerpt long enough in my opinion. That moment from When in Rome 2007 with everyone's hands up in the air cheering along is too magical of a moment. Anyway, I appreciate the tips and useful information; your work is a great template to follow for one's improvement. Keep up the excellent work, sir. @LowSelfEstidle: I seem to recall sitting down and trying to learn the piano intro to "Firth of Fifth" in summer 1993 ... and nearly 22 years later, I still can't do it. I can do the middle section reprise of it on one hand. Maybe I will crack it before I die - who knows? Anyway, back to articles here, I have done some clean-up on A Trick of the Tail, including another copyedit of most of the prose and removing most of the remaining unsourced material (which was mainly minor technical things). I think the release dates are the only things left uncited, then it'll be good to go for a GA review, although I would like to write a bit more about the cover art, that no sources seem to ever talk about. @Ritchie333: Keep going at "Firth of Fifth", I say. You might just get it. Or even better, the introduction to "Watcher of the Skies"! My best suggestion would be to look at the 2007 reissue interviews on DVD as they tend to talk about the covers on them (certainly for the early Gabriel albums, I'm just unsure if they talk about them for the later ones). The interviews uploaded on YouTube have been cut to fit the 10-15-minute time limits from back in the day, so most are incomplete. LowSelfEstidle (talk) 17:33, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

I used to be able to do the Watcher intro all the way through (and I used to have a VST plugin on a laptop called "Watcher Mix"), and I have occasionally played it at soundchecks. Most people haven't a clue what it is. I've also occasionally run off the main riff to Van der Graaf Generator's "Killer" - actually armed with a set of bass pedals, VDGG's stuff seems easier to play than Genesis', probably because there are less solos. I have just started to editing wikipedia and create two articles Punya Prasun Bajpai and Ashish Kasyap. I was also trying to create page of Draft:Lip Ink International. My intention was only to get to know that why this page is not approving when i have added lots of references. I was doing that just because to learn but not to earn. I have also submitted a page for Wisdom Jobs and added best reliable resources however it was rejected.I asked to the writer that why this page has been rejected when i am have added best notable references but there was no reply from the editor. See the page Naukri.com. This page is referred by poor notable websites however this article is approved. Corporation articles are a hard sell on Wikipedia. The fundamental problem is that too many people are trying to use the site to promote a business, and paid editors are particularly good at trying to hide company articles under a wide range of sources, hoping nobody will spot that they are promotional. To counteract that, we have very strict guidelines for organisations, which means the company must be written about numerous times in major newspapers, magazines or books - no exceptions. In the case of Naukri.com, the article is in a poor shape, but a news search easily shows it is one of the most important websites in India and could be improved. Whereas we reject articles that do not appear to be possible to be improved.

I'm sorry if it feels difficult because paid editors and spammers have ruined things for honest editors who just want to contribute, and it is a shame. However, if the anonymous whistle-blowing feedback I posted on Draft:Lip Ink International is typical of the company, I think they would be better off without a Wikipedia article - it's not always a good thing to have one. The best thing you can do is on the red "Submission declined box" is click on one of the "news", "newspapers" or "books" links and see if there's anything there. There's quite a bit about Wisdom Jobs, such as this news source, which I think is reliable and independent, but it's not what I would consider significant coverage. 		Hey Ritchie, just a quick barnstar to say thanks for the many, many reviews of Boat Race articles you've conducted over the past year. As of this morning, I completed my (initial) goal of ensuing that every Boat Race had, not only its own article, but one that was either of GA or FA status: we now have 158 GAs and 3 FAs that we can all be proud of! It doesn't stop here, for me at least, I'm going to keep up with improving the quality of the GAs and look for more FA opportunities. I seem to recall James Brown was in a bit of a state; it could do with cleaning up and taking to GA but I'd need the right book sources and some serious background knowledge beyond what I currently have. Concerns

This is far from the first time I've seen this and the usual long-term outcome is a WP:COMPETENCE and WP:NOTHERE related block on ANI, but that takes a long time to get to and there is plenty of time to stop it. But to give a more productive answer, have a read of this, specifically this bit (paraphrased slightly), "Admins always refused to resolve conflicts ... an editor would get into an argument with a reviewer ... they would argue back and forth, discussing the issues ... they would stomp into some admin's talk page hoping for a resolution .... Who's the person who knows least about the problem? Obviously it's the admin - who was just hauled in at the last minute for Conflict Resolution". If the admin had been there before the last minute, he would not be independent, right? - This is an easy case, I think. Talk page refactoring

This edit was an inappriate [[WP:TPO|removal of other editors' comments from a talk page. Musicpublisheronline (talk · contribs) and I had been having a dialog about his username and his editing choices. • No problem. I told the tagger that the speedy deletion criteria in question did not apply, and added a source. Good old @Dr. Blofeld: zoomed in and noticed a historical connection. I actually drove right past Foxholes Farm on the A414 a few weeks back en route to a gig at Hertford Corn Exchange, which is why I thought it was suspicious. @Phyllis Rosser: You're welcome; this is a frustrating case as I've been through several newspaper and book sources and all they say is "abc exhibited xyz including the Ceres Gallery" - without a good source documenting the history, an article can't be written. I assume you are this Phyllis Rosser, former president of the Ceres Gallery from 2000 - 2004, and that presents us with a problem, as you have a conflict of interest. I'm sure you want to commemorate the gallery's history and influence on feminist culture, nothing wrong with that, but you have to use what third party sources have written, otherwise you'll be in trouble. I'd strongly advise you to read the plain and simple conflict of interest guide as soon as possible. Ironically enough, I can see more coverage in reliable sources about yourself than the gallery! @SilkTork: Thanks for the support. In the case of Q9, I felt that "I swear I'll sue Wikipedia if you carry on treating me like this!" was not a credible legal threat, but rather simply a mix of frustration and responding in kind to an admin violating all sorts of policies, not least WP:INVOLVED and WP:CIVIL. Wikipedia:Don't overlook legal threats is one of my favourite essays; its advice is good for handling any sorts of interactions with BLP subjects and their articles. Yes, as a matter of fact, they are. (Although you didn't really expect them to admit it, did you?) This IP has been identified as the "best known for IP" and has been blocked. Their reference here to "my questions at your RfA" proves that those IPs were also the same person, although they were not formally identified and blocked. --MelanieN (talk) 15:06, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
