Copyedit Request

While searching in the Internet, I recently found the article Kingdom of Tanur. It is a small city-state in south-western India prevailed during the period of Portuguese domination of the Indian Ocean. The article was full of factual errors and was very poorly sourced from out-dated books. I made all the factual changes needed, and now I want to check the article on grammar.

Please improve the grammar (and other areas) of the article. I am ready clear any doubts on local history. I also like to change the title of the article to "Kingdom of Tanur" from "Vettathunad".

@António Gomez the Second:  Done Phew! that was a big article. I've left some inline notes requesting translations and clarifications. The references could also do with some attention, either by using names or simplified footnotes.  Philg88 talk 09:41, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phil. Some people from the company (including the CEO and the president) is holding a press conference right now. They say that there was no explotion of power unit, but they also say that they don't "know" what caused the fire. Can you wait for official explanation?--Rapsar (talk) 08:34, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Addition: The company organized a press conference, stating the transformator was not the cause and was intact. They state that a coal fire broke out 140m below surface, and burned too fast for recovery. Source --95.6.67.100 (talk) 08:36, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I've already uploaded the Turkish version but I can change both. You want me to show a coal fire at 140m below, right? In the mineshaft or in the tunnel (with Turkish please :))  Philg88 talk 08:57, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline for Einar.

Hello again! Right now I am studying the best articles on painters to get a better understanding of how a really great article should be written. While reading El Greco I came across a nice timeline template. Since there is a written timeline on Einar Jolin in Liljevalchs I thought it would be nice to have this as a similar timeline in the article. So I have converted it to Einar. The Liljevalchs timeline ends at 1957 so I have added to it from the other books. It is in my sandbox and I guess I just have to move it to {{Template:Timeline of Einar Jolin's life}} in order to use it in the article. Or...?? Anyhow, I was wondering if you would be kind enough to take a look at the first draft in the sandbox? At your convenience, of cause. - W.carter (talk) 21:45, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, W.carter and thanks for the message. I've made a few small copyedits to the timeline. The easiest way to move this is to search for Template:Timeline of Einar Jolin's life. You will see an option that says, "You may create ...." so just click on it then copy and paste your text before saving the file. Note that if you want the same behavior as in the El Greco article you will need a second template to provide the info bar across the bottom of the page with the "timeline" option. Otherwise, the template will be displayed in its entirety by default, which is not good style. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 05:01, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many Thanks Master Yoda! Thanks for the tip about the "You may create..." shortcut. I did not think that was a totally legit way of making the template. I suppose the two colons in your text is just a typo and not the way to write templates. And, Yes, I plan to use the second template to make the box collapsible. I may not be very good at reading instructions but I really like to dissect articles to see what makes them work, and sometimes that involves going in layer after layer of text and templates. Best - W.carter (talk) 14:57, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done I tried out several places for the box, and this seemed the best alternative. (With the refs and you get a single column reflist, below at the Bibliography and it seems lost and out of contest. A new section for it just looked silly.) But suggestions are welcome. - W.carter (talk) 15:27, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome you are, young Padawan. In watching you develop as master Wikipedia editor, much pleasure take I. Maybe left justify the box and put it after the external links per the style guide, even though it's not strictly speaking a navbox? (And the colon was a typo, vapourised with my light sabre). Best,  Philg88 talk 16:13, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm not an Editor yet..."But I've learned so much." Moved the box, it looks better and does not displace any text when opened. From a purely aesthetic point of view it also looks like a "foundation" for the article, a finish line. The two refs in the box "fell out" of the usual reflist so I put in a new reflist for them. They might be redundant, but since the timeline is based on a timeline in a book it might be ok to mention. Or do they simply look misplaced? - W.carter (talk) 17:29, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Give it time my friend As for Einar, I have commented out the second set of references—I can find nothing that says timelines must be referenced and the <Timeline> framework doesn't support wikicode—because it looks ugly. I have also extended the infobar to the full width of the page. Feel free to change things back if you don't agree. Best,  Philg88 talk 05:44, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Much better! I was just a little nervous about putting in unreferenced material. There was however some new interesting info in the book version of the timeline that I had to ignore due to the lack of space in the diagram. I'll just put that in the text instead. Also thanks for all these conversations, I enjoy them very much, and I have also noticed that they help me improve my English. My spelling does not "shine so red" when I type anymore. - W.carter (talk) 09:30, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@W.carter: I think that as long as the accompanying article text (with references) supports what it says in the timeline, no one could have grounds on which to challenge it. As for your language skills, I know one perhaps one word of Swedish, so your fluency in English is something to be proud of. Mind you, at the moment there's Chinese, Turkish and German text on this page so a few words of Swedish wouldn't be out of place. Best,  Philg88 talk 09:40, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hej Kompis,(Hello my friend) Well, the translation is not accurate word for word, but it carries the same meaning on the same level. Since you are familiar with languages I'm sure you know that we tend to greet others with very different words. Not knowing Swedish is no great loss. It's such a boring language, unpoetic, crude and contains so few words compared to English. Our heritage is slaughtering others (see Vikings and don't believe everything you read about them being "just peaceful traders") and farming. So not much in the way of improving the language. But since you know Chinese you just might pull of pronouncing Swedish words. We also rely on "tones" in the word for correct meaning. It's the way you say the word that defines the meaning. Japanese people usually have no trouble speaking Swedish. Most others calls it "singing". Sorry, way of topic!:) Ha det bra,(Best) - W.carter (talk) 11:29, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I not sure about the usefulness of the Timeline section - as it is evolving, it just seems to be a repetition of the body of the article. (But without references!) I can see value in a timeline section which is a chronological summary and/or cross-reference, but not one that duplicates the article.

What are your thoughts? Pdfpdf (talk) 10:22, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Pdfpdf, I was thinking about turning that into a <timeline> that is hidden by default. In that way, people can look at it for a summary if they're interested. In doing that, the references can be skipped (the timeline tag doesn't support Wikicode), provided of course the facts presented are corroborated by the article. Thanks for all your work on this, by the way. Nice to have a balanced editor on the case!  Philg88 talk 10:31, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you think so. (I just made the mistake of looking at the Spratly Islands page - I think I'll stay well away from that one!) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:10, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
BTW: How do you think "The History of the Spratly Islands" should be handled. (At the moment there's an editor wanting to place multiple copies of the same text in at least two articles ... ) It seems to me that some of it would be appropriate in Spratly Islands, and some of it in Spratly Islands dispute, in which case there would be a large overlap, (i.e. duplication), and endless ongoing editwars. Do you think a separate History of the Spratly Islands article would work? (At the moment, it redirects to Spratly Islands.) Pdfpdf (talk) 06:10, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As you've no doubt noticed, there is a lot of ping-pong POV pushing involved in the Spratly Island articles, which is why we started a separate "dispute" article in the first place. A third "history" article is a good suggestion but what worries me is that we're going to end up with content forks, particularly given the potential overlap between "dispute" and "history" as they are inextricably interwined. Maybe the timeline could be a separate article instead?  Philg88 talk 06:46, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Soma

Hallo Philg88, thank you for your graphic to Soma. I translated it into German. But, I've strong doubt that it is right (even if I agree, that the information of the 2 km deep inclined shafts is reported). I think the shafts are 2 km long, but not as deep. I found some literature about the geology of the region and started a talk in German. May be, you want to make a note to the graphics as I did. Anka Friedrich (talk) 14:19, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Danke für die Nachricht, Anka Friedrich. I'm waiting for a Turkish speaking editor to confirm the cause of the fire, whereupon I will change the graphic. I will also take the German Wiki talk page comments into account at that stage. Best,  Philg88 talk 16:21, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at many turkish websites (although my Turkish is not good), I often found the trafo-version, even at the website of the regional governement, where the mine is located. But the oparating company states the trafo was not the source and investigations would go on.
I found a 3d graphic probably based on yours (stating source: wikipedia, mining-technology.com, university of wisconsin on mouseover at the right down corner) [1]
Conserning the depth of the shafts: tr:wikipedia writes 400 and 800 Meters according to a turkish source „Trafo patlamasından yol açtığı belirtilen yangın maden girişinin 400 metre kadar altında çıktı; işçilerin büyük bir bölümü ise 800 metre derinlikte mahsur kaldı.“ (trafo explosion 400 m down from entry, workers 800 m deep). --Anka Friedrich (talk) 20:39, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I found an infograhic from Anadolu agency on [2] (down at the site is a biger one) see original at [3]. Anka Friedrich (talk) 22:59, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To editors Anka Friedrich and Rapsar: Not sure how we should proceed now. I can recreate the graphic based on the second link above or should we wait until more details emerge?  Philg88 talk 09:42, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
First we should remove the one we have so that others don't use it. --Anka Friedrich (talk) 11:21, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll leave you to remove it.  Philg88 talk 12:31, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can't, I'm not administrator. Anka Friedrich (talk) 13:34, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the graphic is now in use across nine Wikis. I'm not going to request deletion based on the disruption that would cause, so instead I will create a new version based on the latest information and upload that. Best,  Philg88 talk 04:35, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, my friend. Long time. :)

I'm trying to add specs to the article sourced from the image. The middle stuff about 30X32 etc and 60+90+30 blah blah has me totally confused. I have no idea what it means. If you have a mo', a bit of help would be great. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed my friend :). I trust all is well.
That is a horribly written sign, but the middle section:
全桥由主桥和两岸引桥组成,跨径布置为: (3x32m+3x32m) 组合箱梁+ (60m+90m+90m+60m) 连续梁+ (4x32m+4x32m+5x32m) 组合箱梁。
IMHO translates to:
The overall bridge span between the two banks is made up of two sets of three 32 metre long box girders linked to four single beam sections of 60, 90, 90 and 60 metres in length, which in turn connect to two sets of four 32 metre long box girders joined to five 32 metre long box girders.
I've passed under that bridge on my way to the Qionghai Strait for some fishing and as I recall there were an awful lot of girders visible from the water, which seems to fit. Best,  Philg88 talk 05:08, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for this. You really helped me out of a jam. Oh, and that is some sweet copy. May I add it to the article verbatim? :)
Under? Fishing? Nice! You know the old saying "If you give a man a beer, he will talk with you about sitting in a boat and fishing all day." It's deep, very deep. :) Oh, and I saw people processing their catch on the shore. They all had nets full of teeny little fish and nothing big. I fear there is nothing left near the shore to catch except babies growing up and not getting the chance.
Best wishes and thank you again. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:21, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Philg, how are you my friend? I need some help. Recently I was improving this article. Now it is in better condition. I have removed unsourced materials, unreliable references added few refs and now it is ready for GA. But it needs your copyediting. The article is very large it took me 2 days to complete my work, hence NO time limit. Please help me. BTW ping me when you reply, nowadays I'm having short-term memory loss :P. Many thanks. BTW are you sure that Shahrukh Khan article is ready for GA. Jim Carter (talk) 06:41, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A quick scan tells me that it appears to fit the requirements for a GA but only a review will definitively determine that. And before you ask ... the answer is no. :)  Philg88 talk 06:47, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Philg88

I noticed that you made an edit to the recent "CAF - development bank of Latin America" to "CAF - Development Bank of Latin America." From what I've seen, they don't capitalize the "D" and the "B" since its not an acronym. However, Latin America is capitalized because it is a proper noun. If you could revert the name to the original move (CAF - development bank of Latin America), I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks!

SRLMSRLM (talk) 16:50, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SRLM and thanks for your message. The capitalisation after my move is correct per the logo at the bank's official website and the title used for a presentation by the bank to UNCTAD. There are also numerous other examples on other websites. That means that that the article title follows Wikipedia's brand name, titling and common name policies. Lower case also looks odd, but that carries no weight. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 17:09, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Philg88,

When I click on Google it doesn't take me straight to the article, but instead to a page where it says the article can has been moved. Then, there is the link to the new page with the new name. Is there a way to fix this? This did not occur when the name was changed a first time.

Many thanks!

Hi Phil! I notice you've been pretty active sending Hong Kong articles to AfD. There's something disturbing that I noticed about most of those articles, as they seem to be pretty similar in style and format. You seem to have messaged me with no problem, but maybe the user you are trying to contact doesn't exist or there may be some other technical reason. Let me know some more details and I will try to help you if I can.  Philg88 talk 04:20, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The RfA opinion page thing

Thanks for sharing your views. I agree with you and the other opposes. In fact, the absence of responses (before the fiasco) spoke volumes: 'not a lot of support'. Now I know why. The whole idea now seems like creating a new government agency: more red tape, bureaucracy, a back page keystroke magnet, and hard to dismantle if not working out.

My definition of a lousy two days: Futian Checkpoint twice and coming home to this embarrassing fiasco. Anyway, a little red wine and a few episodes of Black Adder should help. :) All the best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:05, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear! Must be visa time then :) Had I known you were away I would have nipped "messagebotgate" in the bud, but the storm has now blown over anyway. Enjoy Baldrick and the boys! Cheers,  Philg88 talk 04:14, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sidetracked

Hello my friend! Long time no talk. I have not abandoned my project with the art articles. But, while waiting for some more books before I started I thought I might just expand some Swedish stubs with translations. So far so good, until I translated my favorite place in our little island Ljugarn along with the Template:Gotland County and everything... and found myself in a quagmire of disambigous names, red links and whatnots!! This was partially due to the weird language we speak here, but also because some astronomer with a sense of humor has named a bunch of asteroids after places on the island. See e.g. Mästerby <sigh> Talk about getting sidetracked! But I made the mess so it's only fair that I clean it up. I have fixed Fole, Vamlingbo and am currently working on Kräklingbo. It will take some time before it is all sorted out, but I will get there. The articles will be relatively small, nothing fancy, but they are still better than on SweWiki. I thought about asking you to check them out if you have the time, and I would really appreciate it, but it seems that these small articles have attracted the attention of WikiGnomes, so mabye it's ok anyhow. When this is all done I will certainly get back to my right habitat in the art section.

A small question: When we let Einar Jolin go, did we/you/I submit it for review or was this done automatically giving it the start classification it now has, or is it waiting for review or something? I have been hanging around the Teahouse listening in on other conversations so things are not as foggy now for me as they were back then,^^ so I was just wondering. All the best - W.carter (talk) 19:13, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Kompis (I hope I remembered that correctly), good to see you back here. Funnily enough, I met a delegation from Gotland in China one time. They gave me a stone sheep (not a full size one, obviously), which I still have. I'd never heard of the place before that. Anyway, back to the point. I have made some minor tweaks to Ljugarn, bear in mind that at the moment the Accomodation section is marginally on the wrong side of Wikipedia is not a directory / Wikipedia is not a travel guide. Fole Vamlingbo (minor tweak to that one) look fine.
As for Einar, you moved the draft to main space on May 7 after we discussed it on the talk page. Only pages that were created via AfC are reviewed. What happens in other cases is that either the user has autopatrolled rights, whereby a new article is not flagged as such, or for non-autopatrolled editors, Wikignomes called new pages patrollers cast their well-trained eye over it for obvious problems. Since there were none the new page flag was removed by someone. Cheers  Philg88 talk 05:12, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quite correct Kompis. Ahhh... Once again you make my dabble look good. My favorite word in English is "eloquent", and I think it describes you very well. Well, Gotlanders tend to get around.^^ It is THE Viking place in Sweden, we can't dig anywhere without stumbling across some treasure with artifacts from some distant corner of the world. No travel guide. Check. The more I edit the more I find that I am better of if I steer clear of the SweWiki and only use it as a kind of reference. Kräklingbo is done if you would like to check it. It contains a lot of firefighter lingo so it was really a struggle. I am moving on to the rest of the "asteroid-articles". These pages already exists but are now disambiguation pages so they really needs fixing. But I could use some advice as to the rest of all these small places mentioned in the Template:Gotland County. At the moment they will only result in small stub articles. But Gotland is really growing as a prime tourist target. The harbors are expanding to accommodate all the giant cruise ships from all over the world since the Baltic sea is one of the few safe (conflict free) seas left. I deal with 4-5 languages on a daily basis (no, not all my language skills are on display at my user page) so there is great interest in the island. (We have a saying here: "Move to Gotland, learn Japanese.") So, should I make a lot of stubs or should I remove the brackets and make them more anonymous for now? - W.carter (talk) 09:45, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Kompis, sorry for the delay in replying but I was offline most of yesterday. I have copyedited Kräklingbo, no major problems there. As regards {{Gotland County}}, the red links aren't an issue - there is no deadline for the completion of Wikipedia and assuming that these places could be verified if so required, they can stay where they are as stubs are gradually created. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 05:06, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely no need to apologize for tardiness my friend. It is a healthy sign that you have a life outside the Wiki. Quote You: "there is no deadline" for copyediting the articles I work with. And I really hope you will let me know if you do not feel like CE any of them. I do not take your help for granted. I am still as grateful and awestruck by your skills as the first time you helped me out, and patiently introduced me to the experience of Wiki. I will make the stubs of Gotland my little pet project and turn the red links blue one article at the time, while I work on the next big art article. I know most of the info on Gotland by heart so no great effort to know what to write. Best! - W.carter (talk) 18:51, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thank you very much Phil. BTW I was thinking to take this article for DYK. Will it qualify, I don't know if article about films goes for DYK or not. I have selected the hook [...] that Ek Hi Raasta' was directed and produced by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner B. R. Chopra? Jim Carter (talk) 16:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Jim Cartar, you're welcome. As far as DYK goes, films are no problem but it's not a very interesting hook. I'd look for something else to create with a bit more sizzle. Best,  Philg88 talk
I forgot to sign; First time But Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award in Indian cinema. Recently we have an article at ITN section about Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Can I give it a try? Jim Carter (talk) 16:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Phil I have added an image of Praveen Prem; Please take a look. Thanks Jim Carter (talk) 07:20, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm ... looks like you snapped a picture from a TV show or video. If that's true then it is a copyvio as you have created a derivative work of a copyrighted item without permission. If I'm right I recommend that you request deletion tout de suite.  Philg88 talk 08:11, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that. Actually the photo was given by my friend (I told you earlier). I was searching for a free image but I can't find any so I thought of giving a try with this one after polishing the image with Picasa. Anyway I have removed the image from the article and will nominate it by evening (IST). Thanks. Jim Carter (talk) 08:36, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why? What's wrong with it?  Philg88 talk 11:54, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I know nothing about maps. But I was thinking if you can make it look like google earth or google map etc. Just kidding.
It's fine as it is in its standard Wikipedia format.  Philg88 talk 08:13, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I saw your comments at this AfD. The author has changed the name of the article to "Trial of Cody Legebokoff" so I was thinking when it is no more a biography then should we change our !vote to keep?? Jim Carter (talk) 07:34, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Jim Cartar. Please be careful with that AfD. There is currently a discussion at ANI about this so I would wait and see what transpires. It's not a simple question of switching !votes. In future if you want to leave me a message, please put it in a new section unless it relates to the previous topic. It's hard to keep track otherwise - I nearly missed this one.  Philg88 talk 08:11, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Peacock is for articles

About this: This change is okay, although your rationale is not really relevant. Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines#Not part of the encyclopedia says that it's not necessary or even appropriate for non-articles to comply with content-focused guidelines. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:47, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message WhatamIdoing. My view is that if people see peacock terms used in policies and and guidelines then they are more likely to use them in the article space. It's no big deal really and I'm not that fixated about it. I suppose I must have had a now forgotten bad experience with a peacock when I was a child.  Philg88 talk 19:03, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. The ever-growing set of rules around here is impossible to keep up with. I've told you about one that I knew, so next time, it'll be your turn to help me out.
(Peacocks are not exactly friendly creatures. I don't think I'd want to let a child get within biting distance.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:56, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some advice please.

Hello again! When I wrote Mästerby I actually collected info from four small articles on SweWiki (Mästerby, Mästerby church, Mästerby county and the battle of Mästerby). I thought it was better to have one substantial article instead. Now I'm on to Lummelunda and I face similar circumstances, only this time one of the articles, Lummelundagrottan already exists on EngWiki. (Lummelunda is spread out over 8 articles, each with 8-10 sentences! Church, parish, county, site, cave, factory, settlement, community. Crazy...) I could write just about Lummelunda and also expand the Lummelundagrottan with the translation from SweWiki, but I really think that it all belong in a single article. With a redirect at the old Lummelundagrottan. The settlement is nothing without the cave, the same way Mästerby is really insignificant without the battle and Kräklingbo without the fire. Do you have any thoughts on this? - W.carter (talk) 15:08, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey kompis, how's it going? My view is that you should consolidate everything you translate (church, factory, cave etc) under Lummelunda but keep Lummelundagrottan as a separate article as it is notable geographically on its own. Summarise the cave in the Lummelunda article and use {{main}} under the section heading. English Wikipedia does not usually have an article for each individual feature of a relatively small settlement. As an aside, in the Lummelunda article I don't like the list of individual farms per Wikipedia is not a directory. "Lummeluda is a farming district" would be sufficient. Best,  Philg88 talk 05:49, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Philg88, confused as ever when dealing with SweWiki. But you made some excellent points. And I thought I had eliminated the all the worst parts from the original articles. They really put anything in the articles. Be thankful that you don't speak Swedish and have to experience the horror of it. :-/ The use of {{main}} solves the cave. I had not thought about it! This will be the first time I use it. You see... still learning. I don't have much time to Wiki today, just wanted to check in, but I will get to work again in a couple of days. Best, - W.carter (talk) 10:56, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Master Yoda, it seems that your padawan "has gone and done something rather rash". Again. Well, I won't be writing anything about the churches on Gotland. As it happens someone else is. :) When I was asked by Krenakarore to help with some translation he told me that Yakikaki is doing some great work on churches in Sweden. So I looked, and yes there is the nice Template:Churches on Gotland with articles about churches in places now marked with red on the Template:Gotland County. So I had the idea that by "linking" these templates some of the red on GC would turn blue and actually lead somewhere e.g. to the right church on the CoG template. And the churches on the CoG would get some more links. I did a test with Alva (Gotland), see this, and my explanation on the corresponding talk page to see if anyone minded. It's been a day and still no sign of bots or objections.

When I started with all these little settlements it was because they were just redirects to the asteroids named after the places in a similar manner, and that's where I got the idea. (Example: early version of Kräklingbo ) Do you think it would be ok if the rest of these redirects were created, or is this bad form? User:Yakikaki has a similar sort of "projectlist" as I have at List of churches on Gotland. I have to see to the translation of Gryta Church when I get home tonight, but after that I will return to my settlements. Best, - W.carter (talk) 14:32, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Carter, once everything you do can be reverted I see no reason why you shouldn't do that. Go ahead please ! Krenakarore TK 14:39, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see it now, and I think you shouldn't do that. Master Yoda is right. Red links are there to be created (I don't like them either). This you're trying to do was done in List of castles in the Central Bohemian Region and related lists. Some users did that because they thought a castle is pertinent to the place where it is. I would create stubs instead. Krenakarore TK 16:45, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Young Skywalker. Not overly rash use of the force but I'm not convinced it's the right way forward. Red links aren't really a problem, there were million of them last time I counted (kidding) and in the case of GC it's highly likely that the target articles will be created in the future - when doesn't matter because there is no deadline. Redirecting to a church from a template headed "Minor settlements" is a bit misleading. It's like buying some goldfish online but receiving pirhana fish instead (that analogy is a bit over the top but it will do). In short, I'd wait until you have a target minor settlement article before instantiating the link. Cheers, [[User:Philg88| Philg88 ]]talk 16:06, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both of you! I will have to agree, I was just being sneaky. I remember how confusing it was to go looking for Kräklingbo and ending up on 8682 Kräklingbo. Same galaxy, wrong planet! I thought that a church would not be as bad. I think I'll hit the middle road and create some very quick stubs as a way station between the templates, and fix them up as soon as I can. I'm nearly done with the "asteroids", but more of them keeps popping up all the time. If I ever get my mitts on that astronomer... The goldfish/piranha concept seems like an interesting business idea, something for the Monty Python company, The Confuse a Cat Ltd. I'll make something for Alva (Gotland) later, but now I'm of to Gryta Church. See ya! - W.carter (talk) 18:26, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

SVG Locators

I cannot succinctly express the gratitude I have for each new PRC provincial locator map that is released, most recently Hunan! It's been a long hiatus since the last productive period in 2011 (as I recall Chongqing, Fujian, Hubei were released then). Due to the turning away of some prolific cartographers at Commons, I was beginning to lose hope that the PRC set would be completed, but this seems to be akin to 1942 in World War II.

Secondly, the county-level borders is a leg up over most of the maps at Commons, which only had prefecture-level borders. For a political map, I consider that more important than the rivers and lakes, but there will be another time for these bodies of water.

Where there are pre-existing maps highlighting a place's admin boundaries within the province, I don't think the locator maps should completely supplant them. In fact, I think they complement each other, since the locators specifically map the seat/urban core, which may not be near the centroid. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 07:28, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

At the risk of parroting Lieutenant of Melkor, I can only say "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" -Zanhe (talk) 07:43, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey guys, glad to hear you like it and a thank you to Zanhe who alerted me to the missing location maps in the first place - sorry it's taken me a while to get round to doing them. @Lieutenant of Melkor:: I agree that the location map is not necessarily appropriate for highlighting admin boundaries. Time permitting, I will make derivatives for each of the prefecture-level divisions. The hard work was doing the base map, now that I have a template to work from it will be relatively easy to create derivatives. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:26, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
You are extraordinary in helping us newbies to understand all the things on the Wikipedia and setting us on the right track. Thank you! W.carter (talk) 10:40, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you kompis. Seeing editors like you blossom is immensely satisfying. Best,  Philg88 talk 14:16, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is not just from me. Your help to all newbies (and others) has not gone unnoticed. It is a bit difficult in this kind of "open" environment to do something for someone, in secret, collectively. If we all worked in the same building I would be the one standing by the water cooler taking up a collection from all the other newbies for a Barnstar for you. - W.carter (talk) 15:52, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes very true W.carter. Phil, you will soon get a surprise. Jim Carter (talk) 08:27, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jim Cartar:. That's an intriguing comment. No doubt you will tell me what the surprise is in the fullness of time :) Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:21, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The surprise is not going to come from me. But from some other editors. I have kept it secret for a month now, so I'm not going to say anything else. Let the time disclose the secret. But I trust, you will like the surprise. Jim Carter (talk) 09:47, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for tireless article development, particularly related to maps and China. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Jim Cartar submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

An editor with seven years experience, with 16000+ edits, 244 articles created, more than 5 GAs, more than 2 FAs, and lots of DYKs, Editor Philg88 deserves to be an Editor of the Week. In the words of Madalibi: He is tireless, day in, day out. He designs new maps, helps with "articles for creation", copyedits articles in need, responds to queries on the China noticeboard, creates new wikis and writes DYKs. He is indefatigable and, as such, deserves this award. Any one with any problem or question, especially with or about China, can ask him and will get the perfect answer. In other words, he is one of the best editors I have ever met. I'm glad to nominate him for this award. Thank you.
