Mail call

Hello, DannyS712. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:39, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Smallbones my email doesn't currently work, so I can't see what you sent me. Is this urgent? DannyS712 (talk) 18:43, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I found an email from you in my archives and tried sending it there - maybe it's a different address? There are several topics. The only "urgent" one is about publishing The Signpost Sunday (4pm eastern) but there are 2 other possibilities, so let's not say urgent. Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:44, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Smallbones the email I use(d) is dannys712.enwiki@gmail.com which isn't working. For this Sunday, if you want me to run the publishing script to carry out the mass messages I can, just let me know. DannyS712 (talk) 19:50, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Eddie871 will be doing the publishing this Sunday. Maybe over the long-run you could check in at the Newsroom talk page, say 10 days before publication, and see if you could fill in if he isn't available. Thanks. Smallbones(smalltalk) 01:45, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Smallbones I've created a new email, though for now its only enabled on meta - can you email me if its still relevant? m:Special:EmailUser/DannyS712 DannyS712 (talk) 12:53, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Everything is cool for now. Perhaps today or tomorrow I'll send an email that way, just to see if it works! Smallbones(smalltalk) 14:59, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Possible DiscussionCloser issue

Hi, DannyS712,

A recent close somehow dropped an end-div tag, and an end-italic markup token. DiscussionCloser 1.7.3 was used at this RM, but it's not clear if the script is involved in the problem or not. Prior details and links are given at User talk:Buidhe/Archive 14#Unbalanced div's in RM closure. User:Buidhe fixed part of the problem with the RM closure on the Talk page with this edit (supplying missing </div>), and I fixed the other half of the problem with this edit (supplying missing end-italic markup). Would you mind having a look to see what you can find? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 03:53, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mathglot I haven't changed anything with the script recently (though I'm slowly working on a rewrite) - were the templates changed? DannyS712 (talk) 06:34, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unfamiliar with the script or the templates; what templates are used with it? If it's a template problem, I can fix it. Mathglot (talk) 06:53, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The {{RM top}} and {{RM bottom}} DannyS712 (talk) 16:35, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. RM Bottom has two changes in the last ten days; will be able to look at it in 2-3 days. Mathglot (talk) 18:20, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Foreign API

Hello, Danny. If it's possible, could you please to write me down a little example for using Foreign API? It's hard to find it in the script or extension code, because of a lot of variables. Something hardcoded. For example, how to read first 100 new watchlist edits in plwiki from here? Thank you very much in advance. IKhitron (talk) 11:22, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@IKhitron you can read the documentation at https://doc.wikimedia.org/mediawiki-core/master/js/#!/api/mw.ForeignApi DannyS712 (talk) 13:44, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
  • A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • A request for comment seeks to grant page movers the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target. The full proposal is at Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect.
  • A request for comment asks if sysops may place the General sanctions/Coronavirus disease 2019 editnotice template on pages in scope that do not have page-specific sanctions?
  • There is a discussion in progress concerning automatic protection of each day's featured article with Pending Changes protection.

Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Scotland ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  • Rwanda Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  • Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  • Botswana The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  • Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  • Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  • United States Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  • England Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Commons issue

Hi, Danny - would you be so kind as to take a look at the discussion I started here? It hasn't gotten any response, and those modifications are desperately needed. I'm of the mind that it will help reduce the workload for Otrs volunteers and improve the upload experience for people who are contributing images for our articles. It seems to me like a simple enough tweak to the generator script that wouldn't require much effort, or would it? I think it will save thousands of hours of repetitive responses by Otrs agents, upload delays and frustration by contributors if they know in advance what OTRS requires. Do you have any pull at all in that area, or can you direct me to someone who does? Atsme 💬 📧 15:25, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Atsme I don't know what the release generator is, so I'm not sure, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 16:41, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, DannyS712! Here is the March 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard.

Wikipedia News

Humour

This section was written by User:Canadian Otaku, I hope you enjoy it as much as I (Tsugaru) did!

  • If you edit Wikipedia around 1-5 AM, beware, as any admin could block you for being up too late!
  • It's really easy to break Wikipedia, just click here.
  • Ignore people telling you to stop putting "Hrrnngg,,,beans" on the article Bean (film), they don't know what good edits are.
  • Jimbo is god, and can do anything he wants to!

Notes

  • There are 2 new editors now, one of them Berrely, and CanadianOtaku. As mentioned Berrely is our new proofreader (typos beware) and Canadian Otaku is now going to be writing our Humor sections, I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for joining us, and remember, if you want to join, just let me know!

Page mover/delete-redirect

Hello, I closed the RFC you started: Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect as consensus for the change after reading your points at the bottom of the discussion. However closing clear consensus discussions is not advised and since it was a WP:NAC, it could be reverted, although I don't see any need in this case why that should happen. Terasail[✉] 14:11, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Terasail: Thanks, will write the code change DannyS712 (talk) 14:23, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Terasail: Hi. Although closing that RfC is not a problem, it should have been someone who could make the remaining appropriate changes. That is, inclusion of the new user-ability into the user-right page, and updating the {{Proposal}} on Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect. And then there are few other things too. —usernamekiran (talk) 14:31, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernamekiran: Yeah, I have read all that before doing this, and most of that text refers to closing deletion discussions where only Admins can delete the page, however in this case I don't see that as applying since DannyS712 said they would write the code for this change (Bottom of the closed RFC) and the close was just to stop the rfc developing after the system change has been made since it isn't just a policy change. I went to eat so I didn't make a change to the template. (Which was just bad timng on my part) Terasail[✉] 14:42, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Terasail @Usernamekiran the actual code change cannot be done by anyone onwiki, but I've submitted a patch that should be deployed in a few hours, and will update the Wikipedia:Page mover page once it is deployed DannyS712 (talk) 15:24, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – April 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2021).

Administrator changes

removed AlexandriaHappyme22RexxS

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Automatic reminder: 2021-04-03

Hello DannyS712.

You have scheduled a reminder for yourself for today, shown below:

Category_talk:Wikipedia-related user templates: Clear

You can now remove the reminder from your schedule at the /RemindMe.json subpage of your userpage.

Thanks, --DannyS712 bot (talk) 12:00, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

19:38, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello, DannyS712,

Your bot edited this template and since it can't answer questions, I'm going to ask you. Some parts of this template states it is for Nokia stubs and other parts say Samsung. Is it one or the other? I had to remove a category field that caused an enormous red link category to appear. Thanks for any help you can offer to resolve this. Liz Read! Talk! 02:48, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The bot was just fixing the template name, which was broken in Special:Diff/1016263342 by Special:Contributions/182.1.180.184 - that same edit changed it to partially say Nokia. I would just revert to everything being Samsung to align with the title DannyS712 (talk) 03:15, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging request

Hi Danny.

I placed a tagging request for your bot on its talkpage.

I apologise if requesting here is the preferred process. - jc37 19:47, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jc37: Hmm, yeah, here would probably be better in the future - I'll redirect the bot talk page at some point DannyS712 (talk) 20:21, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

Why did you blank my entry here? Please restore it. DuncanHill (talk) 17:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As you haven't responded I have restored the page to the state before you blanked my entry. DuncanHill (talk) 17:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DuncanHill: That was likely an edit conflict, I just added a single comment and didn't change anything (though why did mediawiki not warn me... bug?) Thanks DannyS712 (talk) 18:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I looked my network monitor when using the 2017 editor, and it looks like it's keeping track of the basetimestamp, but not the baserevid. Maybe you clicked "edit" at the same second as Duncan saved. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 18:47, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The edits were 33 seconds apart according to popups. Indeed looks like a bug. – SD0001 (talk) 19:23, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work!

I just noticed you haven't even been here three years, yet you have all these excellent bots up and running. Thanks! Thmazing (talk) 18:40, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Thmazing: Thanks. Has it really only been that long? DannyS712 (talk) 18:44, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's what your talk page says. I did not do any further research. (But you seem like the kind of guy to have that auto-update.) Thmazing (talk) 18:46, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Thmazing: Actually, its been a bit less - 5 September 2018 DannyS712 (talk) 18:48, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For WP:CFD#HOWTO could you please tag Category:Market towns and all its sub categories for deletion. I was initially tempted to only list England's ones but the likes of Category:Ottoman market towns doesn't have other settlement categories so I'll just do all of them. Thanks. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:51, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Crouch, Swale can you please tag the main category and start the CFD, so I know where to link to for the other ones? DannyS712 (talk) 18:47, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Crouch, Swale Also, do you want the sub categories to be recursive? I.e. do I tag Category:Market towns in Moldavia? What about Category:Chodová Planá? --DannyS712 (talk) 18:47, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done Category:Market towns at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 April 18#Category:Market towns
Only the set categories namely "Market towns in X" not topic categories like Category:Chodová Planá that are an instance of. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:50, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Crouch, Swale:  Done, see reply on cfd DannyS712 (talk) 00:08, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks but as was noted the set categories of Category:Market towns in the United Kingdom haven't been tagged. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:50, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help with CFD tagging?

I originally applied for help at Bot requests but a friendly reply agreed I'd be better off at CFD. However, the list of categories which would need to be requested is about 100 in number. That friendly reply suggested you had a bot which could help (with creating or formatting nominations?). I've got a poverty of experience at CFD and I want to avoid making a mess. Is this something your bot can help with? BusterD (talk) 22:30, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

There weren't any other edits by the bot that day for anything else, so I suspect is was not this specific task but rather an external factor that caused it - please let me know if it also fails next week, if not I'll assume it was a random one-time thing DannyS712 (talk) 16:50, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Timeline of investigations into Trump and Russia (2018) (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Although I added the script to my common.js for a while now I hadn’t optimized it because I felt it would be too cumbersome for editors using mobile devices but today I decided to give it a try and I was very impressed! not only was it compatible with my device, it was easy to use, interface friendly and pretty much straightforward. Request for a wee bit of help over at peer review

Hi DannyS712. Hope that you're well during this crazy time. User:GreenC pointed me to you to ask this question. I was wondering if you could take over a JavaScript bot request from a user who's now retired? (Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/AWMBot 2)

Short summary of the problem is - old peer reviews are linked using CURRENTPAGENAME/ArchiveX. That means though when a page gets renamed, the link is lost. We have now about 680 broken reviews in this manner and a user created an almost complete javascript bot to fix it (code available via the bot request). There was only one slight problem which was that sometimes duplicate parameters got inserted into the fixed up peer review template. If you had time I'd be very very grateful to have this fixed up. Once this is done I plan to insert the peer review links into all the outstanding old peer reviews but can't do this until the broken ones are fixed up. Fingers crossed! WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
