Free trusted timestamping

OriginStamp.org is a scientific & non-commercial trusted timestamping service for digital content. You can use our service anonymously and free of charge to prove that you were in possession of information or a file, e.g., PDF, image, video, at a specific time.

Immutable Data Trails

Prof. Dr. Bela Gipp demonstrates how data trails can be secured against manipulation by using OriginStamp and thus contributes to the reproducibility of research.

About

Blockchain-based timestamping to prove the existence of digital content

OriginStamp is a web-based, trusted timestamping service that uses the decentralized blockchain to store anonymous, tamper-proof time stamps for any digital content. OriginStamp allows users to hash files, emails, or plain text, and subsequently store the created hashes in the blockchain as well as retrieve and verify time stamps that have been committed to the blockchain. OriginStamp is free of charge and easy to use. It enables anyone, e.g., students, researchers, authors, journalists, or artists, to prove that they were the originator of certain information at a given point in time.

OriginStamp and Blockchain - A Powerful Combination

Worldwide Acceptance

The OriginStamp services operate fully independent from centralized organizations, governmental authorities or consortiums. Our trusted timestamps are created and stored in a blockchain, based on a consensus model, in which the decentralized peer-to-peer network must agree collectively on the contents of all blocks. The consensus model assures the integrity of all stored information and therefore the immutable, tamper-proof nature of the blockchain.

Unlimited Validity

Once a hash fingerprint is embedded in the blockchain, it is immutable and will exist "forever" as a trusted timestamp. OriginStamp provides you with all data you need to recreate the hash fingerprint so you can validate and confirm the existence of the digital content timestamped at a particular time independently.

Perfect Confidentiality

OriginStamp keeps all data confidential. Only a cryptographically secured hash fingerprint is embedded in the blockchain. To process and create your trusted timestamp, OriginStamp does not even require your digital content, the hash fingerprint is sufficient. This allows you to submit a hash of content you want to timestamp without making it public.

Free of Charge

Who is behind OriginStamp.org?

Team

Bela Gipp first developed the idea for OriginStamp in 2010, while researching at UC Berkeley. He was motivated by the non-existence of an accessible and tamper-proof solution allowing researchers to securely timestamp their material, including publications and experimental data. This led him to develop a first blockchain-based prototype in 2011. The service was later extended and is publically available as www.originstamp.org since 2014 within the bound of research and students projects.
