Great While It Lasted... What Happened Acer? 4/30/2019 4:22:50 AM

Pros: - Light-weight and slim for the performance
- Casing hides any finger prints or smudges
- Card and processor powerful enough to handle pretty much any game you can throw at it, even at its age
- Keyboard feels pretty nice for a laptop
- Back-lighting is a nice feature

Cons: - Main components failed in 3 years time, only used for gaming for about 1
- Battery life (but really, who doesn't carry their charger?)
- Very port heavy on the right side
- Built quality itself is.....well, it's all flimsy feeling plastic, but I guess that's why it's so light
- Acer Customer Support (when your warranty runs out)

Overall Review: I got this laptop back in 2015 and was blown away by its performance. At the time, Acer could do no wrong by me: I had specifically bought this laptop over an ASUS one I saw because I saw and heard about how well Acer was with customer service. Well, right at the new year, only about 3 years later, the integrated graphics started to go out on me. Shortly after, I had symptoms of a failing CPU of all things. Opening up the laptop showed no blown capacitors, so I opened a repair ticket with Acer hoping for something; surely they would help out if they had put in a faulty CPU, right? Nope; something must have changed with customer service because all I got in response was that my laptop was out of warranty and they'll have to charge me to fix it. No follow up call, no email offering solutions, not even a reply offering a half baked solution like "unplug it." What the hell? What company is so flaky about their products main components that they won't even touch you with a 10 foot pole after the 1 year warranty? (Which by the way, 1 year?!?! That's it?! The blasted brake pads on my car that WILL wear out have a lifetime warranty, but the CPU which should've lasted WAY longer only had 1?!?!)
I want to recommend this laptop, I want to recommend Acer, for the time that it lasted, it had exceeded expectations. At the time, Acer seemed to have great customer support. But if all I can get out of the thing is a year of gaming and 2 years of use as an office laptop, without so much as a "we're sorry" from Acer, I just can't recommend them to anyone. 3 years out of a laptop that costs this much is just plain pitiful.

Fantastic Laptop after 3 1/2 Years! 1/24/2019 9:40:34 AM

Pros: -Fast Startup
-Very Responsive
-Plenty of Memory

Cons: -Short Battery Life

Overall Review: After owning this laptop for about 3 1/2 soon to be 4 years, I have to say that this was one of the best investments I have made. I run an airport so I'm always doing powerpoints, sending emails, making overlays in photoshop, and I use my drone to film, edit, and create videos for training. This laptop handles almost everything I need. Until just recently it hasn't shown its age....and by that I mean it has slowed only slightly. I've seen my friends buy laptop after laptop and this thing rocks them every time. I really have enjoyed the responsiveness of the laptop and the speed that it wakes up. Sometimes in a board meeting I'll close the laptop and be ready to leave, then a conversation will strike up needing something pulled up. I can just open it up, type in my password, and we are ready to rock again. Absolutely fantastic. Acer, I will be in the market again for another laptop sometime, keep shelling them out like this!

Don't upgrade to Windows 10 8/31/2018 10:39:36 AM

Pros: Good hardware, hours of enjoyment.

Cons: After upgrading to windows 10, the video drivers no longer worked and windows 10 automatically updated the Bios so that the built in screen would only work in UEFI mode. Windows 10 would also not let me downgrade to windows 7.
It's a pain to clean.
Bios can not disable optimus.

Overall Review: Long story short now this is a linux only laptop, and all my gaming is done through steam with the help of bumblebee.

Powerful laptop for the price; still working great after 3 years 5/28/2018 8:02:50 PM

Pros: - Amazing specs for the price
- Amazing specs for the price
- Amazing specs for the price
- Good IPS LCD display
- Thin & light chassis
- Reliable. Hasn't broken in 3 years

Cons: - Various Minor hardware design annoyances
- USB Ports all on the right side
- Gets a little hot during intensive gaming
- It definitely needs an SSD upgrade, and will run blazingly fast afterwards

Software: It comes pre-installed with lots of crapware. This is easy to remedy. As with all new consumer (non-signature) laptops, you'll definitely want to reinstall Windows 8.1 once you get the laptop. Just make sure you download all the necessary drivers ahead of time.

Overall Review: Update: I've now owned this for 3 years, and this is by far the best gaming laptop I've had due to reliability. It's not the most powerful gaming laptop, but it's definitely been a solid experience, and I haven't had any major issues with it.

Spec-wise, the laptop is beautiful. It has a powerful GPU (960M) and CPU, so I don't have any complaints there. It's quite thin for how much power is contained in the case, and the price of $900 is amazing. I highly recommend that you upgrade with an M.2 SSD and perhaps 16GB of memory. A 5400 RPM HDD as the primary disk just isn't acceptable on a gaming laptop these day.

Keyboard: I impressed that the keyboard is very solid and doesn't bounce. The biggest annoyance is that the caps lock, scroll lock, and num lock keys don't have LED indicators. That's such an oversight. The touchpad is solid, though I wish it had separate left/right buttons, but it's not a big issue since gamers never use touchpads.

Chassis: The chassis is solid and light. It's a bit annoying that the 3 USB 3.0 ports are all on the right side along with the power and audio-out ports. There's a bit of space between the ports, but the positioning isn't ideal. I use a wired mouse on the right hand side, so the cables tend to get tangled.

Sound quality: The treble is fine. You can turn up the bass much louder than on most other laptops, but it sounds noticeably overblown and distorted even at mid-volume. I'm not impressed with the advertised "Dolby" sound. I'd rather have a weak bass than a distorted bass.

Display: It has an extremely good FHD IPS LCD matte screen. No complaints here. The contrast is noticeably high.

Temperature: The top of the laptop does tend to get hot during moderate gaming, but it's bearable. However, when I ran a full-load GPU benchmark test, the keyboard became way too hot to touch. I suspect overheating is going to major hardware problems later on and shorten the laptop's & battery's overall lifespans. Update: It actually runs fairly cool in most games even today. That GPU benchmark was just extreme.

Noise: It's quiet, which is good. On the other hand, the fan is a bit too quiet when gaming. I think I'd rather have a more powerful fan than overheating issues.

Upgrading hardware: Replacing the simplest of hardware parts (e.g. memory or hard disk) requires you to unscrew the bottom and remove the keyboard. While you can do this within 20 minutes, it's annoying that the internals aren't easier to access. After all, this is a PC laptop, not a bloody MacBook. Also, if you're going to get an M.2 SSD for the laptop, you'll also want to find an extra M2 x 3mm screw to hold it in the slot.

Minor annoyance: When the laptop is sleeping, the audio port still outputs static to external speakers, so I always have to disconnect the cable. I believe this is because the audio out and audio in are combined into 1 port.

Lastly, some customers have complained about failing WiFi, but I have yet to experience that issue.

Amazing PC 8/18/2017 2:29:57 PM

Pros: I've had this PC for a few years. It still runs like no other PC that I have owned. My only complaint is that my son found out how good of a gaming PC this is so I hardly ever get to use it. I steal it from him every once in a while and still love it. Acer is so underrated.

Cons: battery life sucks but I always have it plugged in. It's a non-issue for me.

Overall Review: Definitely, recommend this PC.

Hasn't held up well 8/10/2017 9:42:53 PM

Pros: - When brand new it was fast

Cons: - After a year, it slowed WAY down.
- After a year or so, the battery can hold a charge for only about 45 minutes
- Lack of buttons on the track pad is super annoying

wow just wow 3/25/2017 11:10:55 AM

Pros: it's a computer

Cons: bought my V15 nitro in Nov of 2015 the speakers started making static noise 4-5months in. but it was quite and only on for a split second once in a blue moon. however, as the time went by it got worst and worst. at arount 10 months in it will be loud enough to wake me up and will be on for 10-15 min. finally got my on the phone with acer and schedule for repair. had to pay close to 100 dollars because of acer's policy to have them insured and overnight shipping had to be done. got my laptop back around a week and a half. my hard was wiped and I lost the windows 10 upgrade which acer's customer service says "oh, sorry about this. I wish I can do something about this but our policy does not allow it" (from the manager). then another 5 months has passed, March 25 of 2017 (today) and the noise is worst than before. I called the customer center explaining this situation once again I had to speak to the manager and his response was "oh, sorry about this, I wish I can do something about this but our policy does not allow it" now I have a year and a half old computer with speakers constantly making static noise when I have the computer on.... now it doesn't even come and go, It's on permantly. drivers won't work, acer is practically saying "we don't take care of random people who are out of warranty". I can't even sell this computer because 1st as soon as I boot my computer, before it even gets to windows it's making the noise. second I will feel so guilty selling this to another person and giving them the stress of getting the speakers replace every 6 months and having to deal with world-class-customer services.
now as a student I have to save up for another year or so to get a different computer. hard lesson learned. DO NOT BUY ACER PRODUCTS!!!

Terrible Laptop for Gaming - Can not give zero eggs 3/24/2017 9:42:11 AM

Pros: Great Paper Weight

Cons: Fans quit out of nowhere 1 year 10 days after purchase
Manufacturer said too bad for me
Repair shops said they can't find any reason they stopped working
Hours researching the problem online determined it's a problem that many owners of this laptop have. Manufacturer knows it is a defect. Will not/can not help. No solution. Will recommend you replace motherboard which will not help.

Overall Review: Would not recommend. Only good for basic tasks now. Could have purchased a much cheaper laptop to use for web browsing.
Very disappointed in this laptop and the manufacturer. Will not purchase from Acer again.
