Police focus turns to online drug trade

South-west Western Australian police have expressed concerns about the online trade in illegal drugs.

An 18-year-old South Bunbury man was charged this week with attempting to possess heroin and possessing amphetamines which he allegedly purchased on the internet.

Police believe the drugs were bought from the anonymous trading website, Silk Road.

Detective Sergeant Steve Harris says it is worrying that anybody with a computer can access dangerous drugs.

He says police are turning their attention to the online drug trade, with some success.

"Well it's very difficult to tackle because of the anonymity of the site but computer crime now are monitoring the site and getting good results," he said.

"Children are on the internet all the time and it's an easy system to get into, heroin is probably the most hardcore drug you can get anywhere and also the other drug, the synthetic LSD, is killing a lot of people as well [overseas] and it's a very serious drug."
