This is a list of recommendations for the 2016 Hugo Awards, not a slate, and of course by no means a direct order to fill out the list exactly as specified to anyone, least of all the Rabid Puppies, the Sad Puppies, the Ilk, the Dread Ilk, the Vile Faceless Minions, or the Evil Legion of Evil, by their Supreme Dark Lord.

The nominating ballots are at the MidAmeriCon II website. They must be completed before the end of the month, so don't delay. I encourage everyone to fill out their nomination forms completely, as it was readily apparent last year that both Puppies and SJWs alike were lax about that.

What I choose to recommend is no one else's concern or responsibility, regardless of why I chose to recommend it. I will not entertain requests for removals from this list of recommendations, except on the grounds of ineligibility.

SF-SJWs, you may now commence the ritual denunciations. Open up your hate and let it flow into me.

Space Raptor Butt Invasion was written by Chuck Tingle, m'lord.

2. Blogger Mr.MantraMan March 21, 2016 8:19 AM

I'll wager the SJW ignore the puppies. I base that on the Rabids not caring one iota about the scolding the SJW always deliver, and I doubt the Sad Puppies really care or affected by the scolding at this point in time. But then again maybe the Sads could at least pretend to care about the SJW bad feelz.

In short the SJW will take their toys and go home to their cats.

3. Anonymous VFM #6306 March 21, 2016 8:25 AM

Read SJWs Always Lie before you write from ignorance, Mr. MantraMan. You provide no evidence for an exception to the Laws in this case.

4. Anonymous Spartacus xxxxx March 21, 2016 8:29 AM

"SF-SJWs, you may now commence the ritual denouncings. Open up your hate and let it flow into me.

And that is a direct Order from the Supreme Dark Lord himself. We expect immediate and total compliance. No excuses.

From the previous post we learn that "Contrary to opinion, leftism isn't just about hate. Leftists are more complex than that. From my time as a red diaper leftist, I can tell you that a whole range of emotions are involved. Hate, anger, fear, bitterness, jealousy, envy, rage, greed, pride, smugness and paranoia..."

Would the Supreme Dark Lord, in his vast generosity, share a few of these additional table scraps with us? We understand his desire to absorb all the Hate and nothing but Hate, but there's still plenty of SJW Rage, Envy, Greed, and the rest to go around. At least a crumb or two?

5. Blogger Mr.MantraMan March 21, 2016 8:32 AM

#3 just a guess on my part, since beyond maybe changing some rules here or there, they got nothing left. The grannies have scolded us and we just don't give a f*ck, maybe some Sads still care but I personally don't care what the SJW beyond looking for their weaknesses.

If I'm wrong I will read and review SRBI over at Amazon telling the world it's the "Moby Dick" of our time.

6. Blogger Shimshon March 21, 2016 8:44 AM

Apologies for the Off Topic question: can someone direct me to the definitions of the various ranks of minions? I think I qualify for Ilk but would like to be certain.

10. Anonymous Chuck Tingle Fan March 21, 2016 8:58 AM

OMG you did it, your recommended "SPACE RAPTOR BUTT INVASION".

I'm waiting for the fallout over this one!

11. Blogger VD March 21, 2016 8:59 AM

I'm waiting for the fallout over this one!

Should be interesting. I just sent out a press release to 200 members of the media, specifically mentioning that as "a sensuous space romance that is a tribute to true diversity in science fiction."

12. Anonymous No, Conditioner is better March 21, 2016 9:00 AM

Wow and my little pony too...

There's going to be brony rage over this!

13. Blogger Mr.MantraMan March 21, 2016 9:00 AM

"Moby Dick" is my favorite novel so I don't say that lightly.

Anyway I hope I am wrong, it will be glorious reading the butt hurt squee from that ass licker to the "protected classes" Scalzi, we can't ever have enough of that clown opining on this or that in his old lady talk down tone.

14. Anonymous DarthWheatley #2415 March 21, 2016 9:05 AM

@12 There's going to be brony rage over this!

I damn near spit my coffee all over my triple-monitor workstation when I read that recommendation.

Oh God. My sides.

15. Blogger Shimshon March 21, 2016 9:06 AM

@11 Vox how about adding the press release to this post?

Oh wait, just found it.
Silly me for thinking it was made up XD

25. Blogger VD March 21, 2016 9:46 AM

Man, if they even think about No Awarding this... to even the most casual observer they'd have lost all credibility.

Considering who they no-awarded last year, I wouldn't put it past them. But with others in the category, they won't have to do so. They'll likely just give it to someone vastly less worthy.

26. Blogger Escoffier March 21, 2016 9:57 AM

Am I the only one wondering at the size, scale & scope of uber SJW Stephen King's epic freak out when he learns that bad thinkers who may have touched a firearm appreciate his work?

Put me down for a 15,000 word scolding that the asshole tries to charge us for.

27. Blogger jay c March 21, 2016 10:13 AM

Just FYI. If you include quote marks in your ballot submissions, the code inserts a semi-colon after each one. Every time you update your ballot, it inserts another semi-colon after every quote mark, so if you click Submit Ballot after completing each section, like I did, pretty soon some of your entries will have a dozen semi-colons after each quote mark.

28. Anonymous Sensei March 21, 2016 10:25 AM

Seveneves must be in there for strategic purposes, I suffered through the whole thing and it was not worth it. Neal Stephenson has created more or less his own unique genre with masterpiece tomes of fiction, but it's like he decided to give in to the dark side of the spectrum and spend 900 pages trying to make us all care that the train is fine. (Billions of people just died. Whelp, spilled milk and all that. Now let's do a chapter telling me -exactly- how the doors on the spacecraft work)

29. Blogger IM2L844 March 21, 2016 10:26 AM

What about all the blank fields in the form? Several as for "Sample Work", "Writer/Director", etc.?

Should we include the quote marks in the early entries?

Just wanting to know how the entries should be formatted mind you, not following any slate of course....

32. Blogger Ingot9455 March 21, 2016 10:48 AM

My guess is that bronies will influx to the Hugos and join in to put The Cutie Map over the top.

The Cutie Map is all about individuality, and bronies are special snowflakes who want butt tattoos of their very own to make them special.

Omega tendencies mean they care less about society. They have their own herd.

We'll see.

33. Blogger Nate March 21, 2016 10:56 AM

Sad to see Ben Garrison isn't up for an award this year.

35. Blogger Shimshon March 21, 2016 11:13 AM

For Best Novelette, is the "Author" the entirety of this?

David VanDyke, There Will Be War Vol. X

Or leave out the book it appears in?

36. Blogger Shimshon March 21, 2016 11:16 AM

You should consider semi-colons to separate the portions of each entry.

37. Anonymous VFM #5166 March 21, 2016 11:28 AM

Anyone else get an emailed copy of your submitted ballot? I didn't. I don't see any mention of getting one or even any way to request one. They have always emailed you a copy of your submitted ballot in previous years, so why not this year?

38. Blogger Giraffe March 21, 2016 11:29 AM

I'm sad that "If You Were an Award My Love" ended up in the same category as "Space Raptor Butt Invasion". They can't both win.

39. Blogger Shimshon March 21, 2016 11:29 AM

For Best Short Form Presentation it's:

Title: "The Cutie Map" (including quotes)
Studio/Series: My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic, Season 5, Episodes 1-2

?

40. Blogger exfarmkid March 21, 2016 11:33 AM

Do you think Lois McMaster Bujold will suffer a head explosion when she finds out she is on your list of "likes"?

41. Blogger Astrosmith March 21, 2016 11:34 AM

Just in case you don't know, and if you don't have young daughters, you may not: the MLPFIM episode in question is basically a retelling of 1984 and Animal Farm in pony terms. It's really quite excellent.

42. Blogger Giraffe March 21, 2016 11:40 AM

I find it amusing that Black Gate is again recommended for best Fanzine. They either accept you putting them on the slate (that is not a slate) or they never win a Hugo.

43. Anonymous Anonymous March 21, 2016 11:40 AM

LITERALLY SHAKING WITH RAGE THAT CHUCK TINGLE THE GREATEST WRITER OF OUR TIME WAS MISNAMED AND IS NOT NAMED FOR ALL FIVE SLOTS IN BEST SHORT STORY.

THIS ENTIRE NOT A SLATE IS OUT OF ORDER

44. Anonymous Anonymous March 21, 2016 11:49 AM

Proposal: castaliahouse.com authors should maintain a SRBI rating (prounounced ssssRibbie) which will be kind of like a batting average, but where each book they write is ranked against Space Raptor Butt Invasion, 1 being the obviously impossible situation where they match it for literary greatness, 0 for throw away dreck like The Book of Feasts & Seasons, and then the average across all books is taken.

I would expect a .300 SRBI to be what most mortals could hope to achieve.

Call .200 the Scalzi line.

Explain the flaw in this plan.

45. Anonymous Philalethes March 21, 2016 11:50 AM

Just FYI. If you include quote marks in your ballot submissions, the code inserts a semi-colon after each one.

Maybe you're using "curly" typographer's quote marks (“”) rather than simple typewriter quote marks ("")? The latter are always safer to use over the 'Net, as they are part of the original ASCII code set, while curly quotes were coded much later, and HTML has trouble handling them (as well as other punctuation beyond the basics). I don't understand the details, but note that sometimes a simple punctuation character is replaced with a complex code that always ends with a semi-colon. Most word processors these days are set by default to produce curly quotes, so if you're preparing an Internet post or submission in, say, Word, you need to change that setting.

46. Blogger Cataline Sergius March 21, 2016 12:01 PM

Done.

Now that I've seen the entire list...I get it Vox.

47. Blogger jay c March 21, 2016 12:03 PM

@Philalethes Maybe you're using "curly" typographer's quote marks (“”) rather than simple typewriter quote marks ("")?

I used whatever my keyboard typed into the form. I didn't copy and paste from Word or anything like that, so I'm sure it was a standard ".

48. Blogger jay c March 21, 2016 12:07 PM

I included all the information that I could quickly identify for each of my entries. I had a couple of question marks, but otherwise filled in all fields.

52. Blogger Alexander March 21, 2016 12:21 PM

Very important question:
Is FDR's speech to congress asking for a declaration of war eligible for 1941 retro Hugo? Or Hitler's?

I was hoping the first letters of each entry would spell PUPPIES ROOL HUGOS DROOL but this is just as genius. Thanks VD.

Helped me make my decisions.

If I bought for last year's Hugo's, I get to nominate for this year but I have to buy another membership to vote, right?

60. Blogger Alexander March 21, 2016 1:55 PM

Yes.

To spell it out:

If you purchase during the nomination period, then you are eligible to nominate five works per category, as well as vote for the Hugo Award winner, that year.

If you register during the voting period, then you are eligible to vote in that year's Hugo Award, and to nominate in the next year's process.

tl;dr, registering for Worldcon entitles you to take part in the next two cycles of the process.

Alexander wrote:tl;dr, registering for Worldcon entitles you to take part in the next two cycles of the process.

It'd be more accurate to say that you always get to take part in one complete cycle of the awards process, which includes nomination and voting.

Otherwise, you have an awards cycle (nomination) where no awards are given out.

71. Blogger Cataline Sergius March 21, 2016 6:00 PM

But other than that it sounds pretty good.

73. Blogger D. G. D. Davidson March 21, 2016 8:09 PM

@70 I see that Gunnerkrigg got the axe and Life is Strange stayed in. I was absolutely enthralled by Gunnerkrigg Court right up until I reached the point where the author erased over thirty chapters of a major character's character development for the sake of cheap virtue-signalling. Then I rage-quit. I might possibly go back at some point, because it was a really intriguing story, but that part made me mad, much madder than I would have thought. It was like Michelangelo dropping his pants and taking a dump on the David out of sheer contempt for his own work. I hereby condemn Tom Siddell to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena repeatedly until he learns how to do "surprise lesbianism" with a modicum of class and internal consistency. He can start by not giving the reader a finger-wagging lecture right after doing the reveal.

@12 This brony approves, though I think I lost my brony cred sometime back. I'm more than a season behind on the show now, and I don't even know how far behind I am on the comics and books. I burned out on pony. But it probably deserves a Hugo.

My guess is, Hasbro's official word will be to keep its collective mouth shut, assuming anyone official even learns about it. The cast, however, will say whatever they want.

74. Blogger MichaelJMaier March 21, 2016 8:35 PM

BEST NOVELLA
Fear and Self-Loathing in Hollywood, Nick Cole, Amazon Digital Services

I could not find this novella anywhere... Not even when just searching by its name, and as far I know Nick Cole has not published anything with that title. Wasn't the intention here to nominate Ctrl-Alt-Revolt?

76. Anonymous Nathan March 22, 2016 1:24 AM

"Fear of the Unknown and Self-Loathing in Hollywood," by Nick Cole, appeared in Tales of Tinfoil (edited by David Gatewood), published April 17, 2015, by Amazon Digital Services.

@73 Oh, my feelings exactly! I am still keeping up with the comic, but only because I feel the duty to finish the translation project that I started a few years back (y'know, when nobody would have suspected that the comic would undergo a SJW implosion eventually.) It is a bother, because this could have been an excellent and timeless series... until the author himself basically destroyed it for sake of appeasing the lesbian-hungry fans. Doing so to a character whose defining, fundamental trait was always "obsessed with boys" makes it doubly as atrociously stupid.

@71 A number of people seem not to realize this is an award for 1940 works. With this misconception in effect, the already quite small (I assume) number of Retro Hugo ballots will probably have quite a few invalid ones. Of course, all this means is that every nomination for Retro Hugos counts even more than the 2016 Hugos.

80. Blogger Reaper March 22, 2016 4:26 AM

Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) - Writer/Director; Studio/Series
Best Professional Artist - Example
Best Semiprozine - Editor
Best Fanzine - Editor
Best Fancast - Personnel
Best Fan Writer - Example
Best Fan Artist - Example
The John W. Campbell Award (not a Hugo) - Eligibility

Also, Long Form Editor doesn't have a publisher field. Copy the ballot as written into the "Editor" field, or just provide the editor's name?

Dear Mr Day

You state that you will not entertain requests for removal of stories, which is of course your right, but nonetheless I would politely request that my novella be removed from the list.

Alastair

Alastair how can something recommended be unrecommended?

I politely request that you unthink your request.

85. Blogger eharmonica March 22, 2016 3:53 PM

As pointed out above, the title is wrong for the Nick Cole story. Should be:

"Fear of the Unknown and Self-Loathing in Hollywood," by Nick Cole

"Predestination" should have been on the Dramatic Long Form list. It's terrific.

We have to re-register for a new PIN?

88. Blogger MichaelJMaier March 22, 2016 6:45 PM

It wouldn't let me in using ALLCAPS for my names. Try that.

Al R: "...nonetheless..."

No worries, Al...you performed the Respectful Retraction Request ritual with admirable veracity; henceforth, your virtue has been appropriately signalled to the usual suspects.

Not that it will matter....

You should have included "Beyond the Mist", it was my favorite book of this year so far.

Any suggestions for examples, when submitting nominations?

I.e. "Best Fan Writer" has a section for examples right next to who it is you're submitting.

93. Anonymous Anonymous March 23, 2016 8:15 AM

Thanks for the recommendation, Nathaniel, but the standalone book of Beyond the Mist was published on the 4th of January this year, so is only eligible for next year's Hugos.

94. Blogger GK Chesterton March 24, 2016 12:47 PM

Just saw Alastair's request. I also demand he unthink.

95. Blogger maniacprovost March 25, 2016 12:44 AM

Do we need to fill in all the boxes, for example "examples"?

96. Blogger Unknown March 25, 2016 11:00 PM

Yeah, Best Dramatic Presentation seems to require Creator/Writer/Director

97. Blogger Unknown March 25, 2016 11:09 PM

Yeah, and the John W Campbell award is asking for eligibility.

Looks like I have to do some research.

98. Anonymous JudgeDeadd March 26, 2016 6:55 AM

It should be "Lars Braad Andersen", not "Anderson"

99. Anonymous The other robot March 26, 2016 10:31 AM

In the end, for Best Dramatic Presentation I searched the Web for that info.

I will probably try to do that for the others that require examples.

100. Anonymous The other robot March 26, 2016 10:32 AM

Approval required?

101. Anonymous Ranger Mosby March 30, 2016 10:18 AM

For the Retro Hugos 1941, which, remember, are for works published in 1940 (not 1941), note that George Gamow's wonderful fantasy *Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland*, which illustrates the basic laws of physics, is eligible and well-deserving.

102. Anonymous Anonymous March 30, 2016 8:12 PM

Thanks for the list. Just nominated most of it (said no to Tor.com).
Last year I cared, went Sad Puppies + my own thoughts. After the no awards I can't be bothered to put effort in to it

Hello, I'm working on my ballot (lots of typing) - Was there a writer/director or studio for Tales from the Borderlands "the Vault of the Traveller" ?

104. Blogger SirHamster March 31, 2016 12:29 PM

For Tales of the Borderlands, I found these credits.

Written by: Pierre Shorette (Lead), Anthony Burch, and Zack Keller"
Directed by: Nick Herman

Judging by the fact Vox used the director for Life is Strange, Ep 1, I'm going to use the director here too.

105. Anonymous kawaika March 31, 2016 2:18 PM

These are the directors of the series: Nick Herman, Jonathan Stauder, Ashley Ruhl, Martin Montgomery

106. Blogger Calvin Dodge April 01, 2016 9:25 AM

If I'm wrong I will read and review SRBI over at Amazon telling the world it's the "Moby Dick" of our time.

Greater love hath no fan than this, that he lay down his eyes for the fen.

107. Blogger Calvin Dodge April 01, 2016 9:32 AM

I'm sad that "If You Were an Award My Love" ended up in the same category as "Space Raptor Butt Invasion". They can't both win.

SJWs faced almost exactly the same dilemma when "If You Were A Dinosaur, And I Was Your Lady" and "The Magic Rain That Falls On Liars, So It's A Perfect Time To Out Myself To My Family (spoiler alert)" were both on the ballot.

Based on the results of that previous election, I predict SRBI will win the title.

108. Blogger Benjamin Rosenbaum April 26, 2016 5:17 PM

As a card-carrying SJW, I am pleased to see this post. You had me at "This is a list of recommendations for the 2016 Hugo Awards, not a slate." Okay then! Everyone gets to make a list of recommendations. Some of these are good. As long as you're not like "hey gamergaters, here's a chance to flood in and hack the system even though you haven't read the books," your thinking and participation are welcome. Enjoy!

I know you probably meant to submit that episode of My Little Pony as a joke but it happens to be a fantastic episode. I thought of Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery' when I watched it. It's one of the best written episodes of that season and absolutely deserves a Hugo IMO. I just wish all this puppies nonsense hadn't tainted it. The people behind the show and the shows fans deserve better.
