Yn Bollan Bane
This is an unusual Manx tune, but it’s become popular in sessions again lately, especially amongst younger players. You certainly have to pay attention, or it’s easy to get lost. It actually swaps between 6/8 and 2/4, but I can’t do this in the main tune input, so the rest of the tune is continued here:
R: polka
M: 2/4
L: 1/8

Bollan Bane is the plant mugwort, which was believed to ward off evil spirits. This is known as a fairy tune on the Isle of Man - similar to the trowie tunes of Shetland.
Time Signature - Yn Bollan Bane
So, if I understand correctly, the 2/4 part is the "B" part, correct?
Hi - yes that’s right!
multiple time signatures
You can notate this tune like this, and it will show both time signatures in abc…
X: 1
T: Yn Bollan Bane
R: jig
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
K: Dmaj

Yes, I know that’s how it should be notated. Unfortunately you can’t add additional ABC headers when you submit a tune to the session, so you can’t change the time signature within a tune….unless I’m missing something?!
You could put [M:2/4] in front of the relevant part, including the brackets. e.g.
X: 1
T: Yn Bollan Bane
R: jig
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
K: Dmaj

D2D DDD | D2D D2A | B2A GFE | D2D D3|]
[M:2/4] d>d dB | cd ec | dc BA | d2 d2 | d>d dB | cd ec | dc BA | d2 d2 |
DD FD | FD FD | FD FA | d2 d2 | DD FD | FD FD | FD FA | d2 d2 |
f>f fe | fg fe | fe fd | cA Bc | d2 d2 ||
Or rather,
Insert a line that says M:2/4, without the brackets, as can be seen in my submission above https://thesession.org/tunes/13031#setting22427
Excellent! Thanks Tom - I thought that you could do that, because it says no additional ABC headers!
