The first prominent online marketplace for illicit substances, Silk Road, was shut down in 2013. Last May, its founder was sentenced to life in prison. But that hasn’t deterred similar markets from facilitating the sale of drugs.
On the dark web’s eBay-like marketplaces, vendors still sell many varieties of illegal drugs, typically shipping the substances to their customers in vacuum-sealed envelopes. We analyzed listings for several types of drugs that were put up for sale over the past year, using data collected by Grams, a search engine for the dark web.
We identified 958 listings for an ounce of pot, with a median price of $215.31:
There were 2,261 listings for a gram of cocaine, with a median price of $97.39:
There were 2,007 listings for one gram of MDMA, with a median price of $37.07:
Adderall is sold in many different sorts of packages online; the 30-milligram 30-pack seemed relatively common. There were 48 listings for the 30-packs of Adderall, with a median price of $183.46:
Oxycontin is also sold in various packages, and the 40-milligram 10-pack was relatively common as well. There were 47 listings for the 10-packs, with a median price of $248.15:
