At this time, what brands of Bacopa are recommended?

[–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 13 points14 points  (17 children)

I cannot honestly recommend anyone at this time. I think we should make a heavy metals test the next one in our testing plan. Perhaps Purebulk? I could even send some of the Himalaya brand in for testing. However, I don't know if enough people use it to justify it. Plus their customer service has angered me.

I think everyone should make some suggestions on which brand we should test. Then we will have a known reliable source.

First of all, this is something I greatly appreciate. This kind of info certainly would help me.

I currently use VitaCost, and have used Himalayan in the past. Would appreciate test results on both.

I currently use VitaCost as well. They buy their product from Bacognize I think.

    Same here

Agreed. They have at least some degree of transparency and accountability with their in-house brand sourcing. They were fairly helpful when a family member contacted them about poterntial Celiac allergens in their fillers. I order baccopa from them as well because it's so cost effective and is available in standardized and full spectum forms.

Since Bacopa is one of the most studied, effective herbs for memory enhancement, we need to have a reliable source.

    [–]johnny-utah-busey 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Himalaya was on Amazon for $1 + $4 shipping per bottle for a bottle of 60. I ordered a bunch and my guess is other people ordered a bunch of their Bacopa too. A test of Himalaya would be very, very appreciated.

    [–]bacop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are not the same though. I think each of those have 45 instead of 67. There was also some other problem with them(they are from roots). Dont remember sorry for not being helpful.

    [–]shrillthrill 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Several brands (Swanson, Vitacost) seem to use Bacognize: http://www.bacognize.com which is a 45% extract. I'd suggest this one.

    [–]shitalwayshappens 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is that more trustworthy than other sources of bacopa? I'm reading their website and the top 3 sources they cite are unpublished manuscripts that seems to be funded by themselves. That's a little too sketchy.

    [–]shrillthrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only independent testing can settle that question in the end. I wasn't suggesting that we had any reason think it was more trustworthy, just that it made a good candidate for testing since it was popular and standardized to a high percentage.

I have natures answer brand from GNC. This is a great post. I will be following it.

    [–]thin_rizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they replied, and test for heavy metals and impurities

    [–]bonefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been taking Himalaya before learning bacopa may interfere with fertility. (Trying to conceive.) I would definitely like to know how they test.

    [–]shydominantdave 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I haven't read the rest of the comments yet because I want to type this right away...

    1. Screw Himalaya, let's let the free market do it's work and vote with our dollars. And getting the word out online about these dishonest companies who fail to provide COAs is great.

    2. A few weeks ago I purchased "Pure Encapsulations" brand Bacopa. They market themselves as company that sells (only?) to doctors and health professionals. Their products are definitely on the pricey end, but their bacopa actually wasn't overly costly, which is why I got it. It came with a pretty high volume too, 180 capsules. I figured they would have a high quality product, free of toxins. I'm obviously not 100% sure though

Just wanted to throw this name out there for you guys. I have been satisfied with the product, so far...

    [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll look into them too. I agree, I will never use Himalaya again, and will tell everyone not to as well.

That's right, they did just release bacopa. They are a good company. I would use them for now.

      [–]SorHand 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's encouraging to know, I've been using Planetary Herbals after reading good stuff about it on longecity but recently there have been posts about them refusing to release CoA data. It seems like this is the only company around that will publish a coa for bacopa as far as i can tell.

      [–]bacop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perhaps, but I heard enough bad reviews overall for it to push me away. However, it does seem like the only legitamite bacopa source right now. I still haven't taken any bacopa.

So in other words, they are lying to you. That is a load of bullshit they are spewing to try and get you to drop the issue. There is no reason that they cannot furnish consumers with COAs, unless they simply don't have them.

These materials are sampled and inspected according to a long list of specifications, including potency, appearance, color, odor, microbial analysis, and texture.

Ohh, I'm so glad you fucking smelled, looked at, and felt the bacopa... When exactly did the smelling detection method become standard for lead analysis? I personally like puting the bacopa between my fingers to analyze whether it has 10ppm or 50ppm lead content. I've gotten really good at it.

        [–]NootUser 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Indeed, and iHerb aren't willing to request it from them and provide it to me either. :(

"Unfortunately since we are not the manufacturer of the product we are unable to provide such documentation. We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for shopping iHerb and we hope you have a great day."

        [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I would expect them to have it. However, they should try and get it if their customers are asking...

        [–]arbolesdefantasia 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Thanks for following up on this. In response to my original post a few weeks ago on safe lead levels. I received a coa from banyan botanical on bacopa and ashwagandha. And also from nutricargo. Would be happy to share if anyone is interested. Also buyers should be aware of what constitutes safe lead levels. As the safety standards range from each safety authority. See my previous post for a pdf with additional details.

        [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Sure, post it up. I would love to see the levels in everyone's product.

        [–]arbolesdefantasia 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Links to the CoA for bacopa, gotu kola, ashw, from banyan and nutri cargo. note that the Banyan product is a bulk powder. they dont sell extracts. thus the ppm of lead is lower, but you need to take more. https://mega.co.nz/#F!0UU0CLYL!VDRJxUqraod9xyG3IzGYwg

in case above link doesnt work: http://ge.tt/8Zidd7t

and link to paper discussing how to analysis CoA. http://www.imjournal.com/resources/web_pdfs/0607_liva.pdf

        [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thanks! However, the megaupload link is empty. It doesn't show any papers.

        [–]arbolesdefantasia 0 points1 point  (1 child)

interesting, it works for me. i added a different link. let me know if that works instead.

        [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's my browser. I can't download the ge.tt one either. I'll work on it.

        [–]esthers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering about them for a while. The price seemed too good to be true.

        [–]shydominantdave 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So what is the final consensus so far? Parmatrix being the only one we have 100% confidence in? (assuming the date of the COA is relevant and the lab is reputable).

I wonder if I should stop taking my Pure Encapsulations bacopa, for the time being.

        [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until we run some testing, yes. Nootropics Depot has a heavy metals analysis up for their bacopa.

        [–]EngIT 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'd be very interested in seeing any Himalaya COA's too. I use their Ashwagandha but I don't take it daily as I end up with a strange headspace if I take it for a few days in a row. I wonder if this has anything to do with heavy metals? Short term (for a day or two) it does wonderful things including improving my social skills and also helps if I'm feeling low.

Is there a brand of Ashwagandha that has already provided COA's that I could try instead?

        [–]MisterYouAreSoDumbNatrium Health & Nootropics Depot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using Planetary Herbals. However, they have already refused to give another Redditor their COA. They say they do not release them to consumers, which is BS! So I do not know of one at the moment.

        [–]bacop 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Seems like no one has a good source yet everyone is beneffiting from it. I got the Nutrigold one but haven't used it. They are fishy about the amount of bacosides and it is not what it says on amazon.com

Waiting for a reputable brand myself. I was hoping himalaya but those are too expensive for me.

        [–]shrillthrill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm suspecting Bacognize (45%) should be alright given that two major supplement companies use it (swanson, vitacost), but it'd be nice to find out how it compares to others. I've been using it for almost a year, but have also been supplementing with spirulina in the same period which looks pretty good for reducing heavy metal toxicity.

I explained exactly what I wanted, and they acknowledged they understood. They just refused to give it to me. They even told me they spoke to a supervisor about it. They just don't want to give out their heavy metals results, or they simply don't have them.

I gave them all my info. I just didn't give them my date of birth, because that's not any concern of there's. They flat out said that their brahmi product is not sold in the US, and has different heavy metals limits. However, we all know they do sell it in the US. Multiple vendors have it for sale.
