Yeah, I knew this would be the question on everyone's mind. The answer is basically "Kinda, but..."

The first but is that we're currently using OpenAI's GPT-3 for the story generation, and as everybody here knows, their content policies are rather... strict. Obviously nobody wants the sort of stringent and broken filtering that AI Dungeon has implemented, so we're still considering our options here, but some sort of NSFW will definitely be on the menu.

The second but is that current graphics generation methods are pretty wonky, so generated hentai imagery might not be to your liking unless you have a taste for body horror.

Still, I wanna make it clear that NSFW is not our main focus. We believe existing alternatives like NovelAI and HoloAI are already good enough for this use case. We are more interested in supporting long-term coherent stories and interesting gameplay. Personally I'd prefer to focus on pushing the envelope in terms of what can be done with AI storytelling games rather than covering ground that already has very good support elsewhere.

Yeah, one option we're considering is detecting NSFW scenes (obviously in a smarter way than AID) and then generating those scenes with GPT-J only. But this is something that will probably require several rounds of discussion with OpenAI.

Not really. GPT-J has 6B parameters, and the largest GPT-Neo model has 2.7B parameters. The GPT-3 Davinci model has 175B parameters. The only thing that really held AI Dungeon's Dragon model back, despite how powerful the model was, was it being finetuned (and overfitted) on a bunch of mediocre, amateur CYOA games. Also, it says on the website that they'll offer GPT-J as an alternative.

Parameters give diminishing returns, a model with 100B parameters isn't 100 times better than one with 1B.

Quantity over quality shouldn't matter. Everyone seems to point to the number of parameters as the basis for quality.

Example: this is not a story example just an AI example. Let's say you wanted an AI to examine medical records. Feeding it a large mass of data that includes things that don't help it examine medical records won't help. Feeding it specific data will.

So when training the AI, paying attention to what it's being trained on versus how much data it's being trained on is what's important.

I'm not disagreeing with your post. I just disagree that the amount of data and AI was trained on doesn't matter nearly as much as the quality of the data.

Since the first most popular question was answered, I have to ask, how does it basically generate faces/bodies/music? Does it just take one of the images/mp3s from the library and plays/uses the mist appropriate one, does it cut the images/music together from parts (a shape for the face, eyes, eye color, mouth, nose etc picked from a sample library, and just fitting music's together with transitions that fit) or does it like, completely generate it from "scratch" using examples and maybe cutting them up but not actually using pre defined things?

And also how is the situation in the money/usage, can I use it for free? And if yes, how long/how is it compared to a paid version, if there is one?

Currently we only generate human characters.

We do have plans for a separate dungeon crawling mode with monsters included. Judging from this reddit post alone, there is a lot of interest for that and we might have to look at it sooner than later.

Making a graphically interesting dungeon crawler is mainly a question for suitable monster datasets (assuming people want to see e.g. goblins and skeletons in addition to animefied eldrich abominations...). If you know any monster datasets available, do not hesitate to point us in the right direction.

We chose to do a visual novel as it felt like a logical next step from text-based AI games, and a fitting format to try other AI generated assets on.

The anime / manga like style is common in visual novels as a genre, and there are plenty of models and datasets for generating the characters. This let's us achieve a higher graphical quality in characters vs doing either more western cartoony look or aiming for any kind of realism, and therefore hopefully avoid most of the uncanny valley and body horrors.

We might also do experimental worlds with other kinds of styles.

The model we are currently using for music outputs midi and is trained mainly on classical music. We are looking into datasets for JRPG midis to fine-tune the model with, so trying "JPRG music" on Youtube should give you an idea. You'll be able to disable music in the game settings if it gets too old.
