Gwern in FCJ? I never thought I would have seen the day.

Any theories as to why this would occur?

Also, what are the thoughts as to the dosage you took (5,000IU being related to heart arrythmia; any reason for this dose aside from convenience?) and coingestion of melatonin? If vitamin D disturbed sleep via hormonal means, then it most likely will have some interaction with melatonin.

Blame the vitamin D dude; I saw he posted in FCJ, and I thought 'what subreddit besides /r/nootropics would care? FCJ must care if he posts there.'

I have no idea. To speculate, vitamin D is so reliably associated with the day evolutionarily, that it could be like sleep - all sorts of 'active' process latch onto it as a timer? Could be anything really.

Also, what are the thoughts as to the dosage you took (5,000IU being related to heart arrythmia; any reason for this dose aside from convenience?)

Convenience, yes. 10k IU was taking a bit much of a risk, and 5k was the next cheapest.

coingestion of melatonin? If vitamin D disturbed sleep via hormonal means, then it most likely will have some interaction with melatonin.

That's possible, but I'd expect any interaction to be blunting the effect of the vitamin D - that's what melatonin does, it kicks off the sleep cycle. So if vitamin D is kicking off some sort of wake cycle...

Yeah, I was initially going to have a little academic back and forth; however, I'm not going to pretend that I know enough about the circadian rhythm and sleep cycles to be of much help here. My specialty is systemic circulation, not neural. :/

Vitamin D dude (Herman_Gill) should be by soon; defending his baby should be high on his priority list.

Nah everything he said definitely makes sense and he has at the least n=1 data to support it. There are anecdotes of Vitamin D messing with people's sleep occasionally when taken at night too. That's usually why I recommend people take it with their first meal of the day... maybe I should update the examine article to reflect that... maybe I should just update the examine article period.

Also: Happy birthday!

i'm gonna assume username "gwern" linking to "gwern.net" is some type of spam, and therefore I will not click.

Is someone doing science on their own? Is that even allowed?

MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS SCIENCE

"Applejack, who told me outright that I was mistaken, represents the spirit of... honesty!" The dusky pony raised her head even higher, her mane blowing like a wind about the night sky of her long neck, her eyes blazing like stars. "Fluttershy, who approached the manticore to find out about the thorn in its paw, represents the spirit of... investigation! Pinkie Pie, who realized that the awful faces were just trees, represents the spirit of... formulating alternative hypotheses! Rarity, who solved the serpent's problem represents the spirit of... creativity! Rainbow Dash, who saw through the false offer of her heart's desire, represents the spirit of... analysis! Marie-Susan, who made us convince her of our theories before she funded our expedition, represents the spirit of... peer review! And when those Elements are ignited by the spark of curiosity that resides in the heart of all of us, it creates the seventh element - the Element of Sci---" The blast of power that came forth was like a wind of brilliant lava, it caught Marie-Susan before the pony could even flinch, and stripped her flesh from her bones and crumbled her bones to ash before any of them had the chance to rear in shock.

...Twilight Sparkle stared at the horror that had once been Nightmare Moon, racking her brains with frantic desperation and realizing that it was over, they were doomed, it was hopeless without Marie-Susan; everyone knew that no matter how honest, investigating, skeptical, creative, analytic, or curious you were, what really made your work Science was when you published your results in a prestigious journal. Everyone knew that...

I wash back my vitamin D with a pot of coffee just before bed.

Wait... who are you?

Aside: I said this to either edu or eric_twinge a while ago. Because Vitamin D is produced by sunlight, taking it at night is probably going to fuck with SOME process that evolved to work in the absence of sunlight

Interesting to see the data dude, I always like how thorough you are. For what it's worth I've heard anecdotes of it messing up people's sleep as well (and usually recommend people take it with their first meal). I'll update the examine article to reflect that too.
