Atlantis: Online Drug Black Market Shuts Its Doors

shysterBitcoin and Crypto-Currencies have long been associated with a much shadier side of the internet than many of us would like. Many of these black market websites are almost a clone of Amazon, except users can purchase illicit products such as drugs and fake id’s from the comfort of their living rooms.  These sites are mostly accessible via secure anonymous browsing on the Tor network. The most popular of these sites being The Silk Road.

CryptoSource tries to stay away from announcing news from such illegal sites, however, we cannot ignore the importance these sites had on the market price and stability of Bitcoin. Regardless of how any of you feel about these websites, Bitcoin enthusiasts need to recognize that these underground sites are a huge reason that Bitcoin was able to accumulate real monetary value. Without these sites and the increase in value, Bitcoin would have been much less desirable for legit business to start accepting them.

However, now that Bitcoin has gained a wider audience and a more legitimate use, these kind of sites don’t offer the same kind of value assurance to the coins as they used to. One of the sites that was more or less a copy of The Silk Road and the second largest online black market, The Atlantis Market, was forced to shut their doors for good due to “security” reasons. Atlantis offered black market, anonymous items, in exchange for Bitcoin and Litecoin. Users will have one week to withdraw any of their funds before the market shuts down permanently. Below is a statement from the Atlantis team.

Dear all users,

We have some terrible news. Regrettably it has come time for Atlantis to close its doors. Due to security reasons outside of our control we have no choice but to cease operation of the Atlantis Marketmarketplace. Believe us when we say we wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t 100% necessary.

Due to the urgency we are allowing all users to withdrawal all their coins for one week before the site, and forum, are shut down permanently. Please remove all of your coins, these will not be recoverable after one week from now. Anything remaining in your accounts will be donated to a drug related charity of our choosing.

We wish to thank all of you for making Atlantis a great and memorable place to trade on. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Best wishes,
The Atlantis team

SatoshiDice still consumes near %50 of the blockchain Tx despite some adoption from a few mainstream markets. Without SilkRoad, or online gambling (still illegal in the US), Bitcoin will only grow at a snails pace. Lets face it, they are today and appear they will continue to be for bitcoin what prohibition was for Al Capone.
