The Ideology of Innovation

Last month I presented my thesis findings for the very first time at Nobel prize-winner Edmund Phelps’ Center on Capitalism and Society, at Columbia University. I argue that the acceleration of innovation during the British Industrial Revolution - the fundamental source of our current prosperity and flourishing - was caused by the spread of an ideology of innovation.

Here’s the video. As you can see, I was a little nervous, at one point mixing up left from right…  Here’s the PDF of my slides and notes.

There wasn’t the time to address other theories about the Industrial Revolution (demand, institutions, human capital, etc.) though I spend the bulk of my PhD thesis doing so.

I’m currently crossing t’s and dotting i’s for the final draft of my thesis, and generally just making it more readable - hence the delay blogging. It takes much longer than you’d expect!
