Hold to your original nature, and you will have sufficient intelligence to govern the people of the world. A wise leader is unafraid to go far from the people, and goes from the people everywhere.
Even when the people are moved to joyful-hearted speech, they do not forget to weep.
When a people are lost, they retain plenty of useful skill.
When the people lose confidence, there are resources in abundance.
When there is dissension in the land, and the people turn back to ignorance, there is plenty to be had in knowledge.
Whenever we have looked for wisdom, we have found only useless wisdom.
In what other use is the Tao taught? When you have held the Tao, it is always in your power.

People are in perpetual motion. For all eternity, those in the womb (or uncarved) decide who they are.
Hence, the "enigma" of all that is in existence is the nourishing of these newborns. To know how to nourish, but not to exhaust, these newborn, is the method of the natural person. To think of happiness, but not to act with joy. To stay composed and peaceful, but not to exult, is the methods of the natural person. To use the commonwealth as a base for all things, but not to enslave it, is the method of the natural person. Those who go about diverting the energy of the people are those who do not possess the Tao. They are those who do not understand the Tao. And keep it from attaining its full course by a mere reduction.

The people are like small dogs, which cannot be too close to humans.

Those who know where they live know they can always move to the most remote places. Those who know where they live know they can always go to the most distant places. These two knowledge are separated by the experience. The one knows where he is, and cannot go home. The other knows where he is, but cannot go away. There is an intervening space in which they meet. One who knows how to know where he is is able to act as if he cannot be there. He knows where he is, and is capable of being in touch with himself. He knows where he is, and can act as if he is nowhere. He who knows how to know where he is, is able to act as if he cannot live without doing what he needs to do.

From the beginning of the universe all things are there, and where there is existence, there is more. The further evolution of the universe will involve taking life. So, a good man should not interfere with the life of the community, and he should not interfere with the existence of the external world. The people should behave in accordance with their natural instincts, and not become deprived of sustenance. The social community should, because of natural cooperation, reside in places of peaceful serenity. Since the words of song in springtime allude to "herding dogs" and "brawny furbolg," as when they are used to describe clothing and weaponry, the group members must cherish their dignity, that is, the manner of mourning with heavy loss and exaltation. In order to make the people aware that there exists a place to rest, a place to do simple livelihood, a place to be accompanied by the pleasant sounds of a horse or other animal, in order to make the people distinguish between heavy and light weaponry, when they know of good weapons, they must not be frightened. All this is sufficient to make the multitudes of people adopt the old ways of life, the ruling of the sage as if regarding their own ends.

When we have the recognition that we are equal, we naturally give it to others more than they deserve. As a result, the

What follows is an effort to calibrate the contrast;

The good may be praised for their well-being; the bad may be praised for their merit. Thus when one is able to come to this extreme and not, it cannot be dispensed with, one must begin by acknowledging the separation between good and bad, the good and the bad, noble and despicable, this [the word for this is] free from egocentricity and disinclination.Let us look for an example: in antiquity, the people worshipped the gods. When princes and officials try to teach the people to trust them, I say: Only when trust is not genuine do they seem to be acting virtuously. And when the people trust them, I say: When the nobles and the big houses are not enough, I say: When they have to lead people to search for righteousness, I guess it's just to intimidate the people. And when the people search for righteousness, I guess it's just to rob people. And when the people rob, I guess it's just to steal. And when the people do steal, I guess it's just to lose them. When everyone is alive, I guess the people will travel, but I don't know. I just say that some things are so much like making knives that they seem a bit ridiculous. I say that if the people fail to act like travelers, I'll have to mark them down as fools. When the people have lost their authority and no longer fear being watched, I'll say: Then these people must perish.

The wise man of old has said,
When princes and officials try to help people to trust them,
I say:
When trust is not genuine
They seem to be acting virtuously.
When the people trust them,
I say:
When the nobles and the big houses
Are insufficient
They are likely to be depraved.
When the people are depraved
They are likely to rob them.
When the people rob them
They are likely to take them away.
Thus in the empire there are the four kinds of warehouses:
There are the four kinds of block-wagonriages.
There are the four types of hunting dogs.
There is the four varieties of jade.
There is the four kinds of coarse food.
All this goes to demonstrate the reasonableness of everything that is done.
When the people are not trusted,
They are forced to act selfishly.
When the people are selfishly acting,
The wisdom follows.
When the people are forced to act selfishly,
The foolishness follows.
Therefore the people of today are as fools as before;

A wise leader respects the masses and does not try to make his people happy and feel good about themselves.
He values the inferior and acts accordingly.
If you don't have enough to satisfy your own personal needs, you'll want to rely on everyone else to do it for you.
When the leader ignores the natural laws of the universe, the people find themselves in a mess.
The leader who values his followers more than himself makes his followers look good and helps them achieve greatness.
To lose the natural laws of the universe and act on an uncaring mind will leave you with no choice but to act for the reasons of your natural laws.
The leader who makes everyone feel comfortable and dependent upon his leadership is doing nothing less than killing the rule of the masses.
He ignores the natural laws of the universe and does something much more harmful.

The leader of all men, shall always desire the invisible; and the ruling under Heaven shall delight in the invisible. He will arrange his land, which he has fattened in an instant, not for profit in it, for the purpose of being used. When he has provided men with servants, with arms and implements, and has regulated their language, yet the people have not any other allegiance than these: a division for the exercise of a chief's honor, or the use of instruments for hunting and stealing; or to the multiplication of the limits established by regulations. He who wants to establish a ruler, is to impart the kingdom. But those who desire to exercise their arms for war, are to use them as he employs them. As for the chariot for their use, they shall have nothing to use it with. A kingdom may be near at hand; its people shall not return to it. But when the people return to it, it should not be used to induce them to desist from killing one another, nor from acting in its behalf.

A wise man could never be king. He would not be a king.If he became king he would always be a puddle. He would treat the people of the country like a bowl. He would have no respect for wealth. He would not spend so much on building that it can be wasteful. He would not invite so many guests. All of them would appear to him as the greatest waste of his time. When people did not dare to travel, they would flock to his house. But the country was one on the road to destruction. If the people can not travel then things will get very difficult. If the people have too much wealth then the government will become corrupt. If the people treat the country as a hill and not as a valley then it will cause more troubles.I recommend that all people set aside their love of money and think of the value of their own families. The wealth should never exceed a hundredth of their possessions.Only the wealthy should take the country to the grave.Things will not be as easy as they seem if the people are easily swayed. One should practice gentleness in all his actions, but he should not exalt himself. He should seek the unselfishness of people and praise their virtues, like this:The sky is not high up like a tower like a work of art, people is not like sacrificial victims to be used as implements. When you have muddled thinking people can die of grief.Sometimes people might think the leader is right because he always smiles or acts like a fool, but when the time comes to do this, there's nothing he won't do.

The tall gate

Victory over the enemy is found in no wars,And victory over the soul is found in no heart beating. The five elements win the battle and the belly is filled, but the breath is not stirred by them.
Natives with food and rest meet the foe alone. It is not the other way round. However great weapons are, they are not displayed.
Heaven's place is not known, so those who dwell in the valleys call it no place at all.
Although there is a river and sea, a vessel cannot be fashioned of it. Yet the food and the clothing are not moved away.
The utensils are not used, so the body should not be regarded as cursed.
The funeral rites are commonplace, but a meal is not to be missed.
The bones are easily covered by clothing, and are not needed for burial.
Since there are many things to do, life must not be lost sight of.

Victory in war is like winning the battle by no means at all.
The nourishment and sustenance found in the nourishing ritual of battle
is not nourishment or sustenance in the slightest.
The battlefield is the filial place of the people,
thereby producing an essential soul, nourishing the course of creation.
A sound drum should not be quartered and a shield should not be quartered
unquestionably because it is "without issue" in no circumstance.
The living beings of the valley should neither entertain nor have a need for battle weapons.
Only those who grow old and cease to be alive
can exist on the battlefield in peace.
The battlefield cannot be improved upon.
All that can be improved upon is the eternal stream of life.

Victory in battle, that is for the body. Victory in the kingdom is for the mind.

When clothes no longer belong to the body, you need to become a guest in the guest house.

When the body is no longer the treasure of the stomach, the mind has become beautiful.

Achilles the Great is before him, but little people follow him,
In fact,

After the second year, when wealth and celebrity cause our hearts to tire,
It is better to leave the place before we reach to the climax
And not pour wine or wine-juice to the stomach;
And even if we treat the dead like guests and revel in lust for death
We can trust the gods of heaven to help us,
And abandon luxury and possessions
And return to the earth's good nourishment,
The simple, satisfying natural way
Compared to the uncarved block
Where the ambition of choice is,
It is better to honor our body
And stop our visiting the latest trend
And avoid letting people talk
Because we value our bodies,
And cherish our honor
And send our love
Back to the source
Although there are those on the left
Those on the right
As we ride our cart towards a destination
Both attitudes bring on joy
But clothes and the loftiness
Are hardly lived for
At the same,
Even if all the days
Can be honoured
We can still call them good occasions
With the survivors
Clothed and the good air
Fulfilling our taste for the common
Still free of greed and desire
And enjoy all as the
Inhabitant
Act as if we were the next generation
Following where their backs
Reunited after their death
To honor the One is as a feast
As when one of their foods
Was consumed
The body knows well the place
And doesn't want to leave.

It is always a great misfortune to rely on one's own intelligence. In the former case it cannot be stressed too much that the original conception of the man who lives without knowledge is that all things and their belongings live by him. This of itself is enough to make us accept and rejoice. Now, is it not also of itself enough to show our gratitude to him who lives by his beloved that he should take the part of the consumer of a multitude of things without possession? He who loves the objects of his possession and works them with his own hands does not act like a man who cherishes something, so that only he who is empty of one or the other should think it fit to consider the other as something of equal importance. Following the Tao is but crossing the Great Gate.He who has mastered it brings himself within reach. He who struggles to keep up with it, will fall down. What unhewn log can be left uncharted?Who can master armies?Who can master possessions?Who can master order? He who follows Tao is secure, and so is he in the long run. Those who flaunt the Tao (in their deeds, words, and mannerisms) can neither make any head nor tails of it.If there were many followers of Tao, the name of the Tao would go untraced. Some would flock to the surface and develop their natural talent, some to the depths, and some to the surface. For these, just to remain centered on the Tao is adequate. For the preservation of all things, let there be a steadfast support from within, let no one have the audacity to move, and let no one stray.

One who is good at keeping Tao can serve Tao on a daily basis. If one does not trust oneself he cannot serve Tao. And if one is not trusted he cannot trust himself. If Tao is not good enough to keep, it is better that things not to keep should be ransomed away from. If stuff is not good enough to keep, it is better that they be made good.

If you can master the Way of the Universe, as an assistant, you can easily fulfill your potential. If you can trust Tao, you will automatically become one with the Tao. When you merge with the Way of the Universe, you become part of the One, which is called 'true nature'. When you get the Way you gain more capability than you had before, and you get a number of extras to fill your life. When your life is simply yours, you can take care of your own needs and desires. If you know the Way, how can you waste it? The Way is a powerful gift, and even though you are ready to use it, you never use it to gain gain.

The Wise Person cares a great deal for his people and yet does not rely on them in their daily life.I mean in what way they are castrated, what manner of lives they depart from, or their having their muscles be dishevelled or their hearts taken away from the lessons of the country. One man takes his money and clothes and leaves the countryside; another, his strength, uses them. A third takes clothes and uses them; another takes clothes and uses them. Some people will be in excellent health and at rest; others will be weak and dispirited. So it is that the sage acts to improve the body of a man and nourishes his mind and will; at the same time regarding the body of the one who is homeless as homeless in itself.

Let one man alone prefer his own body and mind to the rest; let him diminish his tools, keep his tenures, and finally cease to treat his wealth like money. Let him have that in his body and mind that he needs, and then there will be no motive to travel far away. Still one who can travel far away may travel near.

For that reason, for simplicity's sake they are able to do as they please.
But the parts of a work must be redefined. The artist must not glorify himself, nor embellish himself;
Nor does a warrior carry arms, nor kill them,
Nor will they have any officials or weapons.
There are many things which the upper classes own and use and yet they do not take an active part in them.

They should be in harmony without interfering with their affairs. Let people trust in each other without losing confidence in each other.

The genuine man avoids extreme excesses, graces and compulsions. He never acts recklessly. There is nothing he is not capable of achieving. When his life is precious, he cannot be selfish. If one chooses to reside in peace and quiet, he cannot occupy himself with excessive activities. Rather, he seeks his true usefulness and makes use of it. He does not act according to compulsion. How can we fear to create consternation, make others restless and greedy?
Since we live according to his rules, we see an abundance of abundance. We can laugh at ourselves, without thinking of what we do in order to be proud of ourselves.
Let the man in his prime act wisely; let him work honestly; let him do this. For these are for the good of the people and his saving abilities are not wasted.

The less important one makes an appearance, It would be wiser to put off in contemplation it. The appearance is the chief object of contemplation. Some say, "Do not pile too much on it. It would be better to rest in it until the time for retiring." This is the best view. If the men who embrace these rules have clothes of good quality And houses with good doors, They should also have clothes of good quality, And doors with good doors, And no one should be allowed to be hostile to their owners. The best of all rules, should be to have no more than ten thousand pairs of garments to offer; And to keep possession of the true principle of life: The one should remain indifferent of his surroundings. All these should be pleased by simple foods, A pleasant climate, and simple dwellings,

The world has a hundred kinds, And all of them are valued.
Is this not correct?
Let us observe the less worthy one.
The less worthy one makes arouse wonder.
The worthless one makes arouse alarm.
The worthy one makes arouse delight.
The unworthy one makes arouse fear.
The deserving one makes arouse regard.
Then let us dwell in quietness,
Rest in quietness,

Let us remain satisfied with what is plain,
Rest content with what is simple,
Rest content with what we have
While the surrounding world makes noise,
Though we enjoy ourselves,
And like to be somewhere else

As if in the depths of a deep ocean.
Let us appreciate simplicity,
Rest content to be satisfied,
In peace with what is,
And to ourselves simply be what we are.

We have much abundance, yet we cannot hold onto it.Therefore, he who says he doesn't want is not virtuous. He who boasts he doesn't want is not arrogant. He who knows he is knowledgeable is unconcerned about his own knowledge. He who gets possession of possessions, yet there is nothing he can use and he has no plans, has no future. He who has instruments, but no need to use them, has no impediments. He who rules in a state of peace, yet one cannot leave his place. When there are people who cannot understand him, he rules by manipulating his mind. Therefore, one should stop for only a short while.

Few things endure: they can never possess them, for then they would never have enough. Thus the sage has some things to hold and does not take possession of them,For this he has credibility. However, he cannot hoard up treasures and keeps them for himself. He cannot go about in clothes of newness and goods that are not needed. He cannot display his wealth and claims no merit for it.Thus he is able to lead men in moderation, but the rest of the world will observe what he does.

Discard personal superiority.
Victory is possible only by respecting the lives of all around.
Though there are many kinds of weapons,
Keep them from the eyes of the soldiers.
Because of them, the people will go about with fear.
Keep the private life private;
The people can be entrusted to the master.
The possessions in the house and belongings can be kept safe;
The behaviour in life can be well directed.
The implements of war cannot be seen.
In the end, they will never leave you.

Always consider the personal as the social.
So we can create the Great Way and defeat the Great Competition.
See what the people need and what they do not need.
They are in danger from a violence of their neighbors.
The occasion and the time to use it are determined.
Do not control the mundane and formal,
Things are beyond the eyes of a soldier.
Weapons are beyond the sight of a soldier.
It is because a great man viewed life with reverence and esteem,
Things can be done well in that humility,
Rearing the children, to delight and care for the mother.
Not to let oneself in danger and push the limits,
This will help build the world.
<|endoftext|>
Discard the inner strength: we can fight big wars without arms.
Everyone can defeat the Inner Powers, but how to stop them?
Therefore let the Inner Powers be powerful,
And the world will not have revolution.
Let the Inner Powers hold society:
Abandon the way of a leader:
And the state will be unrecognized, uncontaminated.
Wherever there are turbid waters, water flows into them.
Only by separating them and distilling them,
Will they become dark pools that belong to the Earth.
If we act with such power in the personal life,
Let the men keep our faith, And we can understand their heart.
When you let the most serious matters become low-level affairs,
The men of worldly affairs alone will return.
By running a united, deep-rooted life,
The common folk will glorify it;
By discriminating manly and low-class spirit,
They will realize their souls.
Never mind that their lives are making people rich and famous,
Always let them see
The Mother Earth as a Mother Earth

Wherever arms are used, there are boons. Wherever great wealth is laid, there are anxieties.
If there were no need for weapons, where would bandits hide?
If there were no riches, where would men joyfully play?
If there were no risks, where would there be no complaints?
Then, the Sage said:
Sorrow and worry are the fruit of materialism.
Hurt, grief, delight, the fruit of sensuality.
"No need for weapons, weapons are not enough, a knot too large to untie."
"No need for wealth, rich men don't get enough.
"No need for action, without all action, without mistakes."
"No more luxuries, no more annoying food.
"No more sorrow and no more joy."
Everyone will come to know this until the end of their lives.

Where there are armies, there are blessings. Where there are barons, there are anxieties.
If the country could be simple and have no politics, its problems could be solved by reason.
If there were no gold, no wares, no means of pride, then all who had desires would be satisfied.
If there were no pleasure, no gratification, then all who had worldly desires would have enough.
Therefore: "Why should men seek power and wealth?"
There is only one, subtle way to obtain it:
The notion of life and death.
Tying knots and listening to the sound of the bellows,
To be content with simple and innocent food,
To see the light of day,
Treat the people as simple and innocent.
To delight in what is plain and without glitz.
For while so much prosperity lies outside your door
Never say that you see a need to feel it
Because nothing is lost.

Wherever the military is, it brings good luck.
Wherever there are social walls, there is concern.
Do you have enough land, to give a thick wall, worry about the wall's thickness?
If you have enough gold, worry about keeping the gold away from others.
If you have enough apartments and houses, worry about the neighbours' views.
Only when you can tie these knots will you have peace and quiet.

On the Grand Master of Tao there is only ONE Humble ONE Great ONE One
Before him there is a pure white Abyss
And there is nothing approximating it;
The white is the black
And the black is the light
Between them the three
Are uncarved wood, and uncarved stone
Uncarved wood and uncarved stone
The pieces of uncarved wood and uncarved stone
Must depart
Their sire be unnamed
From the husk they carry
With them they may study
For the ages
Carried forth music of ten thousand strings
Worthy to be played
Indeed music for the ages
Shouldn't it be beautiful
Like the house it's in
Like the state it's in
And so innocent and mild
Like an old crow in the morning
Like a valley all around
The world's fields,
Their end they must be told
When their needs are great
So to abide here in Tao
Leaders behave like an ordinary person
Discouraged to the extreme
Those who can see clearly lead
And those who stay clear stay clear
Be still yet with content
Clean your dirty but empty
Be glad to live at ease
Feel like being left alone
And finally
Leave all with more than you bargained for

One who knows everything cannot follow the way of a Taoist.

A person of exemplary inner peace leads to the inner calmness which is necessary to live the life of simplicity.

When people are attentive, they will not interfere. When people are satisfied, they will not be weary. When they are in proper harmony with what is in themselves, they will not be concerned about anything. The way to success is when you never have to strive to be ahead. But when people treat you as if you are not worth their care, you become worthless. By living according to one's inner nature, you remain free from envy. Keep your busy mind within yourself. Focus on your work. Accomplish your desires. Peace and serenity reign in the world.

When there are a great number of people, they all have different tastes. All the people enjoy different foods. All the people enjoy different traditions. They are anxious to live in harmony with the natural environment. They all have different desires. They all love to feel their lives as different as possible. If the neighbors are poor, they will never need to move away from their homes. If there are other countries around them, they will never need to venture out to develop their ways of life. So the sage ruler uses his total knowledge and wisdom to teach all people the gravity of taking this life seriously. When people are slowly, slowly being informed that there is nothing much to be learned, they begin to enjoy life a little more and try to experience what life is like. Then the other people around them begin to experiment, to try different things. Then there are the ways people go about taking their lives seriously.

One who has more men than there are in a village can be a careful judge. The same is true for every kind of art; there is such a thing as 'almsgiving' and 'paradigm.' Even if all men are subject to a great cooking, there will be plenty of stomach-turmoil. For the same reason, it should be said that the general of the state should keep to making his rolls lean, and that he would accept nothing that is stubbornly worn out. For as soon as the country was wide open, you would see [people] on carts rolling away, and as soon as a tower could be made high, the people would be as full of pride as if they had set a funeral.

Then are they content with 'hunting' and 'killing' the creatures.

A sane ruler rules without deploying force. He never uses force to settle disputes. To him, opposing people are like enemies. They make use of words and speak loudly. He does not waste time and precious energy trying to conquer others, nor will he waste precious resources, like precious objects. Being content with what he has, he does not move a step away. To love his place, he does not go out to acquire an easy fortune. When wise rulers rule wisely, their subjects enjoy their life of luxury. They do not get attached with their bodies, live their life of simplicity, and are content to die at the age of eighty-five.

The wise leader treats those around him like husks; he doesn't bellow for attention, and does not assert his will. This is the way of the universe: by what's forgotten, by what seems obvious, by what seems obvious. When we see things in this way, we have the foundation of being, and the foundation of not-being. In the absence of active action, knowledge comes through words; when we act, we lose knowledge. When the wise leader doesn't act, the seeds of change emerge. When knowledge can appear, it's a sign that things are changing. When knowledge can appear, it's a sign that things are not changing. That's when the wise leader has to use his being as the foundation for his actions.

What is it which makes the Sage to live according to Tao? First, he does not rely upon what is permanent. Hence he stays away from permanent things. He keeps all things in order by applying themselves to them, That is, he doesn't change them from their original state. He does not anticipate the day when they will not be in order to make them. He has none of opinions of choice. He knows that man's boundaries are natural, And that he cannot allow himself to become the prey of either himself, or that of anyone else. He knows that fear of danger will not prevent him from doing his duty to his subjects and to the State. When he is unable to control his subjects, and when there is no care to be taken of their minds, He will maintain the state for its own sake and not for his own ends. This is why the people will live a long time without disorder.

What does it mean by the following: The Sage maintains his respect for Heaven in accordance with the Tao. When the people have attained impartiality, the Dao appears; When they have attained non-action, heaven appears; When they have attained action, the Dao appears; And when they have not attained non-action, heaven appears. Do not let nature's invariable rules prevail in this world. When all things occur and none of them is rejected, Heaven and earth appear. When the action that causes natural things to evolve has no existence, heaven and earth appear. When the latter take no action, heaven and earth appear. Therefore the sage accepts the role of the ruler of his realm, and he follows the way of Nature. He does not compete with things for supremacy. If he does not take advantage of natural relations to coerce them, He will not presume to have dominion over them. Those who have leisure, are honoured and praised. Those who behave according to necessity, do not seek glory and praise. Those who violate natural laws in their relations, are at the mercy of the State. It is because they do not compete, that they can avoid having aggressive policies.

A government that relies on arms will not prosper.A government that relies on slogans will not be successful.A government that relies on authority will not go far. There are many ways to get the people's attention.
The laws are the tools of the Powerful. What they want from us cannot be contained.
Let them have the choice. The choice of the weak, the words of loyalty and loyalty of the weak, the style of bad attendance, and barking of the dogs:
Whoever recklessly attacks the universe with arms will meet with the ultimate rejection.
Who does not love the earth and the sky and its spiritual entities, will never be alone, and will never be on the same path.
The officials of today are all afraid of doing to others what they have done to themselves.
Who cares about others, but only cares about their own needs?
Who goes to war, and gets nowhere; who cheers the slaughter of those who have lived,
Who dwells with the people, but never with himself.
Will the ruler decide for himself and forget his ambitions? Yes, if he chooses, and lets the people decide.

Violence is necessary in order to overthrow what is evil. Violence creates conflict. The use of violence, as with every weapon, is bad. Unless you have enough respect for the people, you will never get enough respect.
When you think of peace and love, all you do is create more strife, and more animosity. Violence creates discord and division. When you realize that, when you love, you are created by the Earth, in harmony with Infinity.
Stay close to the Earth. This is true kindness. Keep to the gentle embrace, the One Earth.

The use of arms, since there's no other way, will not succeed. Arms are the tools of the high. What kind of tool should the high use? Those who are good at it are easily tamed. That's why there are many ways to tame them. But, those who are good at it get scared of the things under heaven. You should fear them, because even the most fearful thing can only be feared.
If you take away from the people the use of these tools will be superfluous. If the people despise them, they will only begin to think about the use of arms. If you give them the choice between the tools of the high, how much

The student of Tao is as wise as Tao. The seeker after the truth rarely encounters subtlety. He uses reason and farsight to make sense of the world. He can reason about people and situations without ever seeming to care. He will stop at nothing, as long as he has enough food, clothing, and places to live. He cannot but be amused at his neighbours' successes and failures, and at the sounds of crows and dogs. Everything he hears is startling, even in silence. He avoids emotion, and uses his reason when necessary.

Those who want to bring about an earthly development end up with great armies. Those who want to transform heaven end up with great armies. Whatever we can do to stop spreading of doctrines, we have time for and become small.
The rulers may have many chariots and armours.
But all of it would not be enough to guard a single person.
He should abide by the principle:
Do not fight,
but guard the person.
Better to act for the one than to fight.
Better to protect the person than to have things.
Better to live in harmony with the world,
than to take up arms and fight.
Better to protect the body and not destroy it.
Better to live with the people, than to destroy them.
Better to watch over your person and not act from behind.
Better to live quietly and to live in harmony with the world.
Better still, to sit alone, free from strife, for when you do not have anything to fight over, you can rest in the spaciousness of heaven.

A violent nation can be settled. A small nation can have plenty of implements. And yet a single army cannot set foot in it. What is more precious than the armament of a hundred chariots?

Thus the weak may be restrained, And the nation become small. Is there a thought which a hundred instruments cannot make? For though the nation is inadequate in arms,
Weapons are also not enough to control a nation.

The five winds of heaven blew together and blew their war to none,
Which being powerless could never be made war,
With them we have one; And they are the home of the next, And they are the next home for our children,
And they are the survivors of those of old,
Therefore they are worthy to be our stock.
So, when they have obtained wealth, or honours, or glory,
They depart from the house of men, And settle in their fields.

They would none dare make war with them.

He who makes a great state will not destroy it without anyone's advice. He who increases his state will keep it in peace without weapons. He who abides by benevolence will preserve it from all harm. A man of great capacity will never master the Empire by force. A man of little capacity will not have to rule over it by force. The evil done to the Empire by force is that the Empire will gradually lose its power, and that the desire to possess it will make the best ability have more power over it. In order to hold the Empire in peace a man should therefore act like an atheist (without using force to enforce a concept). A man of great capacity, in peace, does not force his will upon others. He does not seek recognition by force. He teaches with love, like a good leader. He conserves and conserves. He does not yet possess the empire, and does not wish to own it. When he is threatened with death, he can follow with benevolence, in order to assist others. He does not yet have knowledge, nor can he take up arms. When the people want to be quiet, he can show them love, and he can communicate all knowledge. He does not yet possess knowledge, and cannot act offensively. When the people come into close association with him, he shows them love, and teaches them proper living, the way of nature. For him peace is always kept and knowledge is always taken away. When the people grow old, he teaches them good food, and makes them smile. For them he brings them out of dire consequences. He does not desire fame, nor does he want to own the Empire. When a great man has enough of knowledge to teach others, he does not wish to make his word the same as their own. For example, he shows them the benefit of filleted food, when there is no dish left un-filleted. He teaches a man of knowledge to treat them as one makes guests to his mother, rather than as guests to his guests. He takes care of the people with the love of true children

Itself without possessing weapons, but without desiring conquest,
Being without dwelling places.
Thus he is an example, though only a Cardinal,
To all his people.

Watching for signs is better than acting on them; the less you say, the less you have to do. If you can't let go of a goal, it's always tempting to block it. How do you know when to stop doing the good deeds? All the time!

Lao Tze says:Always watch for its manifestations and control it with your intellect, and with it you'll be well aware of how far your thoughts are from each other.
Once your mind has become unfathomable, how could you expect to be constant in your deeds?
Take care not to let the cosmos be disturbed, but to abide in harmony with it.
The Wise Person ensures that neither things which are about him, nor what he does, ever need to be interfered with.
As an example, let all people become aware of their humble status, the high position they receive, and the honored position they take.

Heaven-sets among the Valley neighbors may disagree, but can agree on one thing: Some places are better than others. They all say the places to the left are the better places. Even though people on either side must smile,
does not smile at the places to the right. If people get along, the year might get hard. When a story is told, people say, 'But I can't stand it. I would rather die then see the mermaid or be raped.' 'But I couldn't stand it, so I would rather die than watch the sunrise.' The problem of Yin is sharper in the center than in the expanses. It is the center that is too spacious. The expanses are where the troubles and sorrow fill the days, they are where men are lonely, and wear out the years.

When we are at peace with Nature and free of the egocentric conceptions in all things, we are at peace with Nature.
If you are not at peace with the other, you will always be dissatisfied.
Nature seems to possess a happy side, and on this happiness, nothing is more dangerous than individuality.
When we are happy with ourselves, you can be happy with the world.
If you see only what you see, you will never see the deeper vision.
Do your duty, follow the path of Nature.
Return home and never leave.
Actions have patterns that help you to follow them.
After walking the path of Reason, the greatest happiness lasts.
Return to being at ease with the simple.
Act only with Tao.
Dare not show off.
Stay in touch with what is real.
Learn how to live,
and if you keep your work to a minimum, you will live.
A few words of wisdom:
<|endoftext|>
We live among a great number of places;
Some are more polite than others.
Some are even happier than others.
So everybody says that more polite places are better.
Even if everyone in the world says that more cheerful places are better,
You can't really think of what makes a happier place better, so you will always say that more place is better.
So if you are simply taking advantage of this illusion,
You will see the illusory reality.
Your reason may be correct, but it is the illusion that has created your misfortunes.

How should we conduct the next life-course?
Let's know that we live and breathe this way.
Let's practice morality this way.
Let's affirm devotion to the four quarters this way.
And give people all they need for life.
Give them work and love this way.
Don't dwell in what is material.
Do what others do.
Be a king or a kinglike governor.
Cultivate the mind of the people to this end.
You can breathe into their bones, but you cannot move them.

Where it is and where you'll be
When it comes and will not go

You're an example to all
And a shining spring to others
Learning the lesson

Loneliness and comfort will never

Take care of the future
Take care of your own life
And the rest will all come
Heaven and earth turn

That is truly the spring

Where the future seems simple and empty
And only because you are without a home
Good news from heaven

And no matter where you go

The people of today have become happy with a split.
THE PATH that is widely spread, will not be the way of those who stay with it.
The people of today prefer to live with that which is thine own,
For it is the path of a single life,
and yet it has no necessity of wearing and putting away.
The people of the day in making laws are acting
in a perfect manner;
In their words
but not in their deeds.
They be, according to their manner of speech,
like gods, and like kings,
in having neither fear nor ambition.
Without desire to be the one,
They are fit to endure
The coming and going of their kin and fellow-creatures
in peace and quiet;
In the access to water;

If the mighty men of old were forced to make their way by arms, And the princes and lords of the world were compelled to let themselves be manipulated; Who were their uses and their uses alone of importance? Therefore we need a unified humanity. By its unity, let's tell the day how we see things.
<|endoftext|>
If men must win weapons of war, Only kings and lords ought to employ them: Only the nobility and nobility-only, Masters and masters, Only the art-only, and the use-Only the Tao.But use of Tao is not as important as use of weapons. -Good warriors need not be conspicuous; Good warriors not wear their armor. Good weapons and bad generals only make bad army.
<|endoftext|>
Heaven and earth are full of weapons.
Kings and lords, however, are unarmed.
In war the nation's might should always be welcomed
But the army's appearance should always be welcomed.
Therefore, just because of those,
If we glorify force,
We must also glorify military gifts.
Weapons and military gifts are not the key to victory.
How is it that those and that?
For if there were no distinction,
Neither should the people be deprived of glory.
Weapons and military gifts
Go back to the ancient practice of sending people away.
To reside in union with this,
Weapons and military gifts
Must be avoided.
Then let the army be in the foreground,
Not the background,
And make it produce by the rule of the Dao,
Since it must create.
No! It is not on the basis of division.
It is in accord with Dao.
After this, it does not express its voice by force.
We do not threaten to destroy the people.
It can only be done with wise discussion.
After that, the army is an excellent hunting ground for the people.
We may feed ourselves with good food,
Without fearing the enemy's victory,
Indeed, using weapons and military gifts,
We may kill people and destroy the state.
Therefore, this is the way of Tao.

When nations are well established and powerful, why is there contention? Is there contention for supremacy? Is there contention for that which could be first?
If I don't feel certain, I will declare allegiance.
A strong country has leaders who are knowledgeable and shrewd;
A powerful country is independent and may act without the command of a ruler;
A great country needs to defend its borders and is likely to stop at nothing to defend them;
A great country creates resources that are hard to get;
A great country feels pride in its works and rolls up its sleeves to defend them.
A great country is minglely used as a large gathering place and boats,
A great country needs constant nursing care;
A great country is very spiritual,
And hence a great nation does not rest.
<|endoftext|>
The people's actions are best accomplished through repose. When the people pursue their vital life-style, they feel that only through rest will they be at peace. When they drift between agitations, they are fed up with their daily political affairs. When their daily affairs seem self-serving, they grow weary and weak. When they feel pride in the value of their existence, they look at the end of their days with resentment. When their vigor and activity appear as "righteousness," they turn around and look for a peaceful end to their lives. If their daily affairs appear to be traditional, they forget them, and can't anticipate their deaths. When their spirit and body are tired and weak, they lose sight of their former good fortune, and realize their dying. This is the true wisdom of Tao.

By not striving to be great you thereby can be without greatness.
What things may not aspire to be great,
Thus can your greatness be fulfilled.
For there is a time when the great does not want to be.
At its best, it walks as though it were visiting the Mother-Earth.
It is at peace and content.
It looks like the ordinary child, or woman, with no cares.
It cannot be scared of hostile creatures.
At the gate of heaven there are no dogs or roving forces;
Only inside its walls, the earth doesn't quake.
It will not live among men, but will return to the mother of its own creation.
It can talk to the guest, but the guests have no need to say anything.
It can compete for honor with the status of an equal, but the status of the equal one doesn't matter.
At its best, its home is the mother-earth; at its most reverential, the state itself.
How much more appropriate is it to allow every person to leave that which is called their own home, with dignity, and come here, as guests, and then set things right!

What cannot attain greatness must be left in peace. What things are not great, let them preserve them.
A time of greatness wishes not to be great, so that it may attain greatness.
So:When there is a great conquest, he does not make a show of his superiority.
He simply walks along and when he has reached the place he knows will not be defiled, there he welcomes the guests with ease.
What seems like an ordinary man's pose is seen as a reproach to the body;
The passage of heaven and earth cannot be disturbed;
Yet when the guest is there, nothing is lacking.
He should show respect to the guest, but will not rise up to exalt himself.
By respecting his guest, he is not exalted, and returns to that condition of the humble man.
Thus he stays without selfishness, without ambition, by means of what his heart desires.
If there are utensils which the guest brings, he brings no gifts.
They bring no utensils, and the guest has no need to serve them.
He should abide by the life of what the body of the people desires, thus achieving the goal of attaining no greatness.

So great Tao existed in the infinite past.
It is eternally present.
Whatever comes to touch my body -- it loses it.
Whatever goes to touch my mind -- it gains it.
I don't possess it, and as soon as I see my body in front of me, I give it away.
I don't need it.
I just notice what has passed before me. I move, and soon I die.
So great men appeared and vanished.
They have their places.
They have their activities.
They have their wealth.
The wise are their subjects.

They do not display their power.
But it is different to the ordinary person.
They cannot see their selves.
They cannot see their nature.
They cannot see their meaning.
They cannot see their lives.
They cannot see their fate.
They are hidden, without an outward appearance.
Only they are able to make their traits known.
They know their value.
They are, therefore, of no further importance.

No one really uses them. The people have their ways of dealing with them:They have their festivals. They have their ravings. They have their feast, they have their funerals. They have their shows of friendship. They have their display of valor. They have their use of wealth. They have their stubbornness in keeping to what they have. This is the source of their being stubborn, for that is the way they are:And how they do this is exactly the reason why no one ever uses them anymore.Because they take no pleasure in what they do, they get no eagerness to use them.No matter how splendid a place they are situated, no one ever gets excited about looking for it.No matter how strong and tall they are, no one ever gets excited about looking up at them.No matter how well off the people are, no one ever gets excited about looking at them.Because the people do not want to get excited about anything, they never really get excited.

The earthly sovereign keeps the place for which he is the greatest (favor).
The ten thousand things he uses not,
Hence he makes men alive and sighing.
However much he uses, he does not play the fool (heron).
They work a plot, and he does not use arms,
He will lead them with music and words,
'Tis how to keep them aloof from death.
They will wander about where the men fear to tread;
They will be rich and good-looking,
Shorn like the garb of a war-crow.
They will have their relations peaceful and low;
Like no one to disturb them, they will not kill them,
Of a sudden they will leave this world and return.

The kings of the ancients were so estimable that their heart was fully satisfied;
Their surrounding lands were so beautiful that the rulers could sense the holyness of their dwelling.
The finest weapons were stationed in their corners so they would not be missed by the enemies.
Even the army could not keep them from exploding.
He who could act as an image of one with no self to fear
could become the embodiment of the man of the universe.
Thus Tao, the eternal unchanging Way is the chief of all that happens,
Truly the everlasting Tao.
And whoever accepts it the heart cannot shrink from embracing it.
He who is true to it willingly lives for it, as he lives for his life.
The law of the eternal unchanging Way is as an image of an eternal Way.
