Facts are to be found, and not only is so great the love of Tao in existence, but its honor is greatly to be esteemed.Because it is such a great love, I find it difficult to define it in detail.Nevertheless,I can speak of Tao as a thing of great goodness, as being full of kindness, or as being full of sincerity, as being equal to lightness, or as being in proportion to gravity, or as being calm as before, or as having strength and stability, or as being self sufficient, or as functioning by itself, or as being without command. These are the actions of Tao, and I know that they can be done; and the outcome is great goodness. What this means is that the greatest goodness also has a subjective origin. One who is abiding by this said goodness, accepts a gift from it; and I have four ways that I cherish it

The word Tao, being in the world the symbol of non-existence,It can be applied to all the world. But what is so small that it is still spoken of as one of the great?Since it is one of the great it is sufficient to call it Tao,And I have here three treasures which I am proud to hold: The first, compassion. The second, competence. The third, not to be self-righteous.Truly being compassionate one can see beyond the limitations.Lying down one can be heard all around. And being sincere one can lead.Confident of doing the right thing one can become leader. And having enough energy one can grow. Those who are dedicated to the Tao will be centered around their being focused on its supreme virtue;Their deep understanding will hold the vast and infinite truth within. And having sufficient passion, the fierce, daring, daring will quickly flounder. But such is the hidden potential of inner strength. The true inner strength will see and not see,It will be true of oneself, to another, to the universe, and back again to yourself.

The Tao that was ever in the world cannot be spoken of.
Although it is invisible to the world, it is always accepted as One.
If the people could see it, it could be dismissed as the One.
What is it?
It is Tao, the invisible unity.
If people looked at it, it would be rejected as One.
What is it?
Its presence.
Looked at it, it would not be seen.
If people looked at it, it would be rejected as One.
What is it?
Tao is hidden; it cannot be seen.
Even those who see it are unimportant.
Look at it and it will not leave.
If people looked at it, they would be looked at as if they were creatures.
If they looked at it and looked at the sky would be rejected as being real.
If people looked at it, they would be looked at as if they were uncultured wild animals.
If people looked at it, they would be looked at as if they were wild beasts.
If people looked at it, they would be looked at as if they were without energy.
If they looked at it, they would blow things up.

The four richest things in the world are no more than weeds. But the root is always there, the root always is.It is as though it were yet to emerge,And it does not want to leave. With faith and sincerity, this is known as gentleness. Not seeking achievement,To take stillness and intimacy,Such action of going without saying is called extravagance. If this extravagance cannot be seen by others,Then it cannot be seen by us.With daring and self-indulgence, we can be as great as in the Dao.The greatest cause of the Dao's past rise and decayIs trust, and trust alone.

The ten greatest creatures are only a shadow. The seed is hidden, the seed remains. Thus, it lacks many things, yet may be regarded as the common essence. When all is harmonious, it seems quiet and calm.Being subtle, the matter is kept under guard. You are enlightened when you know how to appear calm.Without desire, you can be as simple as the light.Being aware, you observe the essence of all matters.Being imaginative, you are at the center of all movements.Though quick to conquer, you realize that the big forces won't be able to accomplish them if you maintain humility and modesty. All of these things can be appreciated, but humility is the most vital.Dignifiedness means the root of the peace. This is the root of all progress.
<|endoftext|>
The four greatest forces are boundless; The root is not highly developed. It is as though undeveloped, So that there may be seen what is hidden, and comprehend what is unopened. Hence gentleness and non-action are the marks of devotion; So that one who acquires the three, is enlightened in virtue. Conceitedness is the mark of cowardice. So, if arrogance cannot prevail, then without hope, And one who desires nothing, one who acquires the great will be enlightened; But being enlightened, one can succeed in self-cultivation; so all things can be worked up in accordance with the law of nature. And nothing so great as the Dao is accomplished without a firm attachment to the root; This is known as its beneficence. That is called the source of its glory.

Tao is Way without identity - it has no limits - the source of all Tao.
One who knows it, loves Tao.
Yet he who does not love it cannot love it.
True love brings no reward.
True love loses nothing.
Attain it, and nothing comes.
That is why those who see the great Tao,
Thou hast the most to love.
Those who have no faith,
Can yet be deceived.
There is nothing greater than heaven and earth.
Yet it is through the small that it bestows glory,
And the great multitude are prepared for it.
One who gives so little to heaven and earth,
Must surely feel unworthy.
Yet love is ever strong.
Love of great truths,
Never diminishes faith in love.
As the great truths are kept for ever,
Nothing else will suffice.
To love the great is to cherish the small;
To lose the little,
Is to lose hope.
Love, by deeming the best,
Lies in letting others rob of their faith.
A little faith and hope is precious.
One who knows how to give is fair to all people.
He who has faith in himself is fair to none.
When the myriad at their height perceive
The beauty of Tao,
They find it also equally attractive.
And it has a place in the hearts of those whom heaven
Ever cherishes.
Who seeks honour for him that towers,
Can hope of gaining that honour,
That alone will settle her matters,
Who, in contentment with the commonalty,
Shall inspire her men with high hopes,
In truth contented, she, alone,
Believes.
The noble he who,
When the world will meet with no welcome,
Is deemed fit to stand out
As its centre-point.

When the ten thousand things have attained the state of full, what happens to them after that? Are they all killed by them, or are some preserved and passed on to the next life? Are the ten thousand things people and not beings? Do people and not beings have a destiny? They are said to have the ability to die. Does this mean that the human beings with a knowledge of Infinity are different from Infinity? Infinity is greater than the manifestations of Infinity.

Thirty-five Way of man are equal in value.
Why? Because they are infinite in extent;
They both have virtue, and each hath also goodness;
The one is a lord to the other.
Therefore, to value what is foremost is natural,
and to value what is lowly is natural;
To treat what is first is natural,
and to treat what is second is natural.
And if one's mind be dull and not aware of the antiquity,
this is for he who has no mind can never open one's eyes,
and this is for he who has many intellects can never open one's eyes.
If one does not value (yang, qi) the one,
then this value will be lost.
Therefore, to value the treasure is good,
and to value the thorned will be good;
and the one who does not wish to be first in anything is the master in everything.
Therefore, when a person looks in detail, he/she will find the depth.
When one has many talents, he/she will find the depth.
One who understands the great emptiness (miao) must have something to learn.
Because a person with knowledge (chih) must have something to learn,

In Tao, nothingness is praised and revered; yet, it is so far removed from all great things that even the unworthy can relate.Honour and gratitude are the basic conditions of loyalty and peace. If we don't value them, we will decay. If we live by them, we will live the world without ulterior actions. These and similar motives must be honored and respected for things are of no value if we can't fulfill them.If we don't respect them, we will quickly lose them. The ideal of Tao is balance and harmony. The wise accept benevolence as their greatest bond. When men are leaders, they value their benevolence, and seek to benefit mankind through it.If we love harmony, it doesn't mean that we have no sense of being without harmony. We are anchored in this reality.Benevolence in its many aspects is nourishment for life. It gives the heart and nourishes the belly. When we don't have enough, we can be both generous and virtuous.Through generosity, we may also be clever and imaginative; through imaginative powers we may be clever and educated; through intelligence we may also be wise; through wisdom we may also have awareness of the Tao; through awareness of the Tao we can be very smart.Benevolence is sustenance for all things. As we rely on it, we become dependent upon nothing and develop meritorious capacities. If we have no sense of dependence, we can be stupid. We depend upon our trustworthiness, our faith, to make sure we are not really stupid, and therefore can rely on kindness to the very extent that it is real kindness. He who has faith is auspicious. For the wise have faith; therefore they can become potent. If faith leads to life,
It is a very great trust.

The wise man in the world regards Tao as great. Why? Because it is so much too big to comprehend. Truly great means that everything in the world regards it as great. If nothing in the world regards it as great, then the Tao becomes the world's great thing. If nothing in the world regards it as great, then everything in the world makes it its own great thing.By putting it first it creates a feeling of emptiness, an uncarved block, if you will.Do not take your beliefs about people seriously, so one can be humble.I believe the Tao is great. Heaven does not wish to glory in them. They can be given gifts but cannot be exalted above. Therefore they are kept in the dim realm in which they dwell.Heaven does not want to glory in them but rewards them with good fortune. Therefore he makes them one of the outstanding men in the world. He who does not honor his own merit cannot make good his merit. He who treasures his own merit cannot be trusted with high authority. He who does not trust his own merit can accomplish nothing. Therefore it is said, "The first favor shall be withheld from the supplicant, for favor is bestowed on the supplicant. To trust one's merit is a great thing, and the highest authority has no trustworthiness."It is said, "All good fortune should be placed in the hands of the suppliant, for the suppliant alone is the possessor of good fortune."He who trusts the true person lacks the strength of such trust. The "Fountains of Virtue" are full of the good. But the upright value their lot in the hands of the humble. Therefore some say,The Excellent one is not impartial in his aid, and being impartial, he is to be esteemed most in the world; the Whose cares he is the lord of, the least of the creatures. To know a man's advantage is an advantage, and one who knows the advantage is good at giving aid. When a man delights in aid, he shows his goodness by no means. He who in goodness remains alone does not know the goodness of the lord; he who is one with goodness, may become the lord of many. For goodness does not depend on goodness, and goodness does not depend on goodness. It is said: "The best is not found in him that has it, but he found it."He who has found his excellence through it becomes the best he ever was, and the best he ever can be.He who does not take it is at least as good as he would be if he had never had it.Therefore the saying: "The worthy good a man is honourable, but honourable are those that find his excellence,"must be understood in its true sense; for he who finds his excellence through it is in good company with the gods.

Tao is something solid and indefinable; that which has its solidness is abstract. Hence it is that something that has its essence is indivisible, and that the essence of something that is not solid is also indivisible. The chief virtue in the world is saving and gentleness; and oneness is this chief virtue. Tao, it seems, is not external (not a thing), but is both unfathomable and immaterial. In this not-of-thing there is depth. The two people may become one, but without saving and gentleness the other will not be able to rise. They may both be equal, but without saving and gentleness the other will not be able to rise. Being greatly talented does not mean having merit. Having much learning does not mean having merit. The person who does not understand the greater task is not competent. Therefore, to the person who knows the greater task, the chief concerns is not to know much. And if one is knowledgeable of the meaning of the greater task, the leaders are the only one who understand it. To know the meaning of the greater task, means one is well aware of one's destiny. The knowledgeable person is distinguished by his discernment, and becomes one of the finest teachers. Only when one is well-known and distinguished, will there be no more outstanding students. To be great is to be there, but to be not-great is to be there. The Great alone was born small. That is why it is great. If we are brave, we must be too much for what is called mercy. If we are economical, we must be too much for what is called righteousness. If we are selfless, we must be too great for what is called leadership. And so if we discard the greatness and become as tenacious,We shall not survive long.If we are too great, we may become tottering:And thus, if we abandon kindness and become just,It is like survival of the fittest. If we are true, then we are most worthy of honour. If we are just, we are most worthy of glory. If we are just, then we are most worthy of happiness. If we are not just, we must be soft and dependent. The wise man loves benevolence,But still he does not love compassion. He loves compassion, but does not love benevolence. He loves benevolence, but does not love benevolence. He loves benevolence, but does not love compassion. He loves compassion, but does not love benevolence. The wise man loves war, and the world should seek to have him to himself.

Cultivate power over
body and be able to be King of men.
Get that,
Look at the Tao as at the human body:
You have a kind body because it is not filled with greed.
A moral body is in order because it is not filled with fear.
Hold this, keep this.
In the beginning of the universe
The little-small was tiny.
As it grows, it is both small and great.
So, be generous to great, and yet be humble to small.
So, be diligent in words, yet act without the words.
When things come out of the womb
You learn what you need, all together.

Create an image of the Self that is even within the Tao; This Self must have form, And at its center be emptiness.

The beginning is empty
It could be so empty that nothing seems to exist.
If I take life and leave it,
I have something.
I have nothing and I have a future.
If I cling to life and discard it,
I have something.
I have something and I have a future.
If I treat being living as a virtue
I am fit for a lord.
If I discard virtue as a virtue
I am fit for a follower.
If I embrace virtue as a virtue
I will have a future.
If I treasure mystery
And consider it inert
Then I have nobility.
If I treasure non-manifestity
And consider it meaningless
Then I have resources.
The upright man does not rely on self-interest
So he will be successful.
The great man does not dwell on the body
So he lives in all things.

Abandon the wish to be great.
Nothingness makes for greatness.
If you are great without greatness
Then you will find greatness without greatness.
One who craves greatness
Is like the man of old who climbed a mountain without climbing it;
Not content with climbing it
He climbed it and fell.
If you would be a true man of good will
You will reject greatness.
If you reject greatness without greatness
You will find greatness without greatness.
Thus, a great man
Is one to make the supreme state supreme;
He is one to give all to others,
And is one to spare those whom he has loved;
He is one to speak with the Inner Life,
And is one to give all he is able.
The way of an emperor
Is to fill his imperial house with the resources of all men,
And to foster all men of good will by giving them abundance
And by lending them all that he thinks worthy.
The sage man of old was not content with material things
He carved them into beautiful forms.
He feared nothing that could grow from them
And possessed them with them.
Hence he was invincible, and soon conquered the empire.
The man of old who led a life of serenity
Was one who placed his lives above all else;
For he cared for all men to the utmost.
And he guarded his serenity by sparing others
And acting from self-interest.

If you love life and have true and undivided loyalty, then you'll have great loyalty and community. When true and undivided loyalty is achieved, loyalty and community arise. When true and impartial loyalty is achieved, friendship and loyalty arise. When loyalty and loyalty are achieved, oaths and community emerge. When oaths and community are achieved, rulers come. When oaths and community are achieved, lords are born. In the presence of great love and heart trust, love and self-sacrifice, true loyalty and faith, loyalty and faithfulness, then pride and lords. Tao is beyond description. We call it non-existent, and so we call it great. So who dwells here, can stay here? Those who have this Tao cannot go wrong. When they have found the Tao, they may not get rid of it.If they do, they must need to guard it.For, when one has found the Tao, he will not lose it.He that guards the Tao, will endure for ever. When he can endure, he will not get rid of it.He who keeps his self-control will never lose it.But he who loses self-control will die as soon as he becomes self-controlled.Those who hold fast to the nay will win, while those who hold fast to the yes will last.Whoever keeps the nay will be saved; whoever keeps the yes will not be lost. When the One rules the many abide, and not the myriad.

Tao is neither absolute, for it cannot be defined. It cannot be unfathomable; because of its non-existence, it stands above all the space and time in which we may live. Therefore, for those who seek to live up to the Tao, nothing is impossible: do not let yourself be overcome by ambition, to the end that you will not lose your peace, by never ceasing to struggle, and by never becoming weary. The One makes manifest everything, yet it is because it is so elusive that it is able to embody all. It manifests itself in myriad forms, yet it is because it is so elusive that it is able to manifest itself. Because it is without motive and motiveless, it can perform its mission well.In doing what it is doing, it is like a great Sage of old, and so it can go on: living in peace, for it does not need to contend with others, not needing to entreat them, and never losing what it has gained. These teachings come from the Ever Living.

Tao is absolute and imperishable; it cannot be named. Thus it is supremely great. Therefore he who seeks to attain to it in the world shall find the way utterly inadequate. The valley of peace will be large. It is a valley of peace because of the unity of the rivers and the oceans. If unity was not there it would split and disappear. Because of the unity, it has these three values; and we are the dependents of the lord. Frugality means being frugal, valuing the things first. Disregarding what you love, you have the ability to control the people. When you are loyal and love what is dear, then the world will be safe and secure.Without loyalty and love, all will go to chaos. When you are loyal and love what is dear, then the world will be fertile and rich. If the world didn't treasure loyalty and love, it would split up and fall apart. Without loyalty and love, your loyalty and love are meant to become a flagrant killing tool. Without loyalty and love, you are meant to be a stubborn defender of one thing over another. If you do not value loyalty and love, the world will fall apart, and it will go to disaster. Because the universe trusts the one who sustains all things, the great world is given life and energy and sustains the great god. The world, in turn, builds the great god and the big tree.

The valley of peace is inexhaustible, because it abides in the unity of life and death; when no life is there, it becomes empty; when the unity has disappeared, it may be described as limpid and full. Whoever acts with frugality has little fear; whoever acts with valor has much fear; who takes action and is then afraid is himself possessed by killing. Whoever acts selfishly has no fear, and so he is able to accomplish great things; whoever acts without valor will become a weapon of the state and the world, and he will prove to be worthless in his action.

For ancient times rulers regarded benevolence as their utmost duty.Since then time, it has been examined as the original principle.
When true humanity has not been preserved, it is detested. When true morality has not been preserved, it is despised.
So, until those three [hold] true humanity and true morality, the world will [appear] insignificant.
At that time it behoved the Sage to regard himself as the world's guest, to consider himself the community's guest, and to consider himself the community's equal.
When one's benevolence is great, he is free from all opposition. When one's morality is high, he is safe from all opposition.
People never mind virtue, nor mind morality, so they begin to lose their proper shapes.
Therefore, if the Sage insists on never possessing any virtue, he may enjoy pure and wholesome chastity.
If he contends with no morality, he may be free from confusion.
When virtuous people are bound to loyalty, freedom can arise from the latter.
When righteous people are bound to obedience, the latter will act as arbiters.
If the former cannot maintain their rightful status, it is appropriate that they shall fall, to fall; this is the way of heaven's helping and saving.

In the time of antiquity, the Tao of Heaven contained such universal principles that no one had an advantage over others, and those without will be cursed; for the benefit of virtue and the loss of it were regarded as faults.
Whoever has virtue, you should cherish it, and gain and lose it, depending upon it according to what is required of you, only.
In accordance with the same principle as also in the time of the earliest years of the world, people all have benevolence; and whoever loses it, will be cursed.
Now, virtue is bestowed and lost; so if you hold on to it, and become successful, you will not lose it; this is what benevolence is.
Whoever has benevolence loses it; so if you lose it, you cannot obtain it, only in such a way that you lose nothing.
Therefore, whoever has character, and those with such characters will be favoured by Heaven; and whoever is favored by Heaven will also have of themselves a high character, which will help them in their work.

But outwardly you would be humble.
And this without a change of position.
Truly by being humble you can restrain the ravages of violence.
And because you lack arrogance, you can manage the world.
And having developed this subtle teaching,
The world will turn to you.
And then the root will be joined to that of Tao.

A person of great gentleness is loved by others
because of her ability to be subtle.
A person of great wisdom is loved by others
because of her ability to remain nugatory.
A person of great prudence is loved by others because
they can act in a manner worthy of emulation.
A person of great tact is loved by others
because they can be trusted.
Therefore, people in the world say, "That which is great is beautiful,
and the next is the one that does not resemble anything."
While "merely" being like something else,
it is actually no longer something.
Therefore, when one achieves a true state of simplicity
and serenity, one is forever free from danger,
and one can be the owner of all under Heaven.
But when Tao is merged with humans,
it acquires all the attributes of the world.
Then the root of the Tao is merged with that of humans.

The one who acts benevolently is loved by others. The one who acts deftly is loved by others. The one who does not do evil will be respected. The one who is sincere is loved by others. The one who is kind and generous will be respected. One who acts cautiously will be valued. Therefore, those in the world say, that kindness is beautiful, but humility is beautiful. That is because simplicity takes the place of cleverness. The one who has the utmost action in life is loved by others. The one who has the greatest diligence in life is loved by others. Therefore, humility is always superior to cleverness. The

The supreme is like the superficial, the tenacious, the generous, the sentimental, and the sparing. The second is to treat others fairly.
The third is to refuse to be ahead.

For this reason, success is expected.
But it is also necessary to be selfless,

If one is in conflict, one wins the battle and it becomes mighty.
A guide of Heaven is to treat people with kindness, and in government is to be selfless.

The Four Intelligences have All the Laws of Nature, and thus form what they are. That is why they are just as apt to act as they are. The activity of a spirit may be like a river flowing to the sea. It can come and go, changing direction as it goes. Sometimes it is quiet, sometimes it is noisy. It might turn to left or to right, but never left or right. It might be good at bringing about change, good at saving people, good at creating plants, or bad at fighting. This is like a cycle.
The creative spirit can also be called the feminine. It may be as intelligent as the masculine. For it may exist in harmony with the world. Something that goes to the sea does not look for rescue or where to find it. If you ignore it, it will not act. This means: Change is happening in all directions. When the feminine moves in harmony with the world, she produces everything. When the masculine goes against the world, he creates nothing. When the feminine moves, he makes things; when the masculine works, he wins. This is called the dark and stormy heaven. That is why people fear being led by the feminine. Things that go to the sea will not bring them to shore. They need to let them go and return to the light. In order to save people, let them go to the sea. In order to help plants, let them go to the ocean. If you want to save the earth, let it return to the sea. People afraid of the feminine will not accept what's natural and let the change occur. What's not natural is always meant as something which should go with the flow. In order to preserve Nature, it is necessary to act according to the will of Nature. Therefore, even though Nature may not move, it will never go against Nature's will.

A treasure reserved for kings and lords.
Treasure to be treasured.
It is always good and the best.
Aye, it is light.
This is called the way of all this.
One cannot see the whole;
One must look at the innermost.
The Tao is so vast and infinitely diverse.
It cannot be seen.
Abandon it and embrace the One.
Move this way and you will find it.
Face it now and you will find it.
The Way is serene.
Its power may be comprehended.
This is the serene Way.
Though its limits have been guarded,
It gives birth to life.
Whoever abides in the Tao,
He is never alone.
Whoever abides in this Way,
He is never alone.
Indeed, all desire, all desire,
Lies at the core of being.
Thus, it is the life-force that manifests
By disintegrating itself.

By what we call Yin, we know the most profound emptiness, the unnamable. Yet being nameless, it seems to be the prime thing. We say: it is nameless, but the object of much desire.

The truly great has no name, The other great has a name. The one which bears no name stays that way. If great but named, it is deep and multitudinous. The sacred virtue in that deepness Is not empty. Its boundaries are extended and sustained, But not consumed. The profundity of its ultimate essence Is not negligible. Its highest goal Is not transient. Its greatness Does not value acquisition. This is a path to the deep and undefined. To get beyond that is depth-searching. And from this to this great circle. By yielding, then deepens, And from this to this first great circle: It is virtuous virtues Which enrich. It is not forceful Virtue Stays with simplicity. It is the Principle of simplicity. This is what makes The Way dependant. When The Way Gives up desire And does its utmost to be virtuous, The whole world Comes to rely upon The Way: It nourishes and preserves. It is inexhaustible.

Greatness, without being so, is more impressive than lesser greatness. Being more than less, it has no name. Only a name if names have no name. For a name is nothing without a beginning. Hence the limitless all-embracing virtue can hardly become clear; Wherever it flows to it endures; It may become plentiful, but never again leads to exhaustion. The standpoint towards which the virtue of the limitless virtue always turns; The standpoint towards which its charge constantly turns; Direction to which its course endures; Direction to which it guides; Power always follows Direction; Power when used on its own, always returns to the undivided. All Direction points to Direction; Power that attains power necessarily returns to the undivided.Power, when used by the simple, is a basis for everything.Power always emerges, takes root, has strength.Power is rejected; its use will only wear out.Such is power's unqualified excellence.Wherever power sets fast it causes firmness, The ultimate nature of the most great Virtue is no great, and no virtue can stand against it. In that way, power always rules the world, even though its ministers fail in it. If they fail to rule, then they can rule for the world, for the world rules, and so on. Powers always succeed, and are not overtaken. Thus, inasmuch as they give their power away, power will also lose the point of being

Of all the hundred-two Weapons, the great sword seems to me the least sacred; for if it were holy, why should it need defense? Moreover, it has three treasures which in themselves make it protectable: First, it is sweet dew. Second, it is the great tree; third, it is the root of success. Having a big root is never lost, for the root in turn brings success. The root of success doesn't suffer from the fear of failure. If the root of success were afraid of failure, it would surely fail. Having a big root hardly loses its origin, for the origin of success is not lost, as well. After making a great counter attack, taking a big counter attack as a counter-attack, the root of success is rooted even more deeply, but the victory is nowhere more secure than in the heart of the defender. After a great counter-attack, the root of success is increased even more, but if that root of success is lost, the person who gets ahead will not be secure. Such is the difference between goodness and hate. But the great weapon is the great standard.

The great Way is like the great Fleeting. How little there is which can be improved by observing it!Is there any thing less good than being, like, or unfathomable? Is there anything less good than taking, like, or claiming it?Is there anything less good than holding, like, or in particular favour? The great Way is slippery and weak, it invites none to take hold of it. The value that's more important than seeing its perfection? The value that's more important than using its own abilities? The value that's more important than claiming its existence? The value that's less than resolvable? The value that's more difficult to coax into action? The value that has more desires than fulfilment? The value that's greater than justifying?Hence, the great Way provides, but it never uses.It gives and it doesn't take. It gives and it never renters. It gives and it brings nothing in return. It provides and it can never be lost. The great Way is the master to the great Fleeting.

The greatest system of Dao is like a great watercolour. It's not perfect, but it's effective.Only the great watercolour exists, yet it's useless.
Nature exists, but it's useless. The greatest sacrifice is taking on faith and expecting something in return. The greatest service is not receiving something in return. It's not knowing when to take an action or when to withdraw. This is called the Mystery of Mystic Spirit.Just because something is not perfect does not mean it's useless.

The essence of compassion is weakness. Strength requires flexibility. Flexibility allows ugliness.
Having flexibility leads to weakness. Weakness is the basis for strength. Using strength leads to direction. In order to use strength, it is necessary to contend. If the beginning is able to contend, it will gain the support of the rest. If there is no doubt about it, the people will have confidence in you. Therefore, the people are like wells that are protected by the rocks of the valley. When the rocks begin to quake, the people are glad to cooperate.
<|endoftext|>
The genuine understanding is that the masses cannot comprehend. Thus it is difficult to inspire confidence in those who lead.People who seek success must put in a lot of work, just as an infant has a lot of play time before his time. The great men of old have thought about what to do in the face of new situations. Having said that, they would see as insignificant, as useless, as impractical. As for those who lack the will to gain leadership:they are simple and simple in their actions, for it is the simplicity of what's right that makes others follow.Just like a well in a desert, the people will look out for one another and go with the flow as the hills and valleys accompany them.No matter what may happen, the people will be secure because they are in agreement with one another. The wise leader does not meddle. It is in the spirit of common sense that they stay far away from conflict. As the sage says: "If you can't prove yourself worthy, prove you don't have to prove yourself." The people, who have confidence in you, look up to you and trust in you. As the sage says: "Do not charge people more than they owe you." Thus, you live according to the law of nature and the law of your heart, the law of life.
<|endoftext|>
The most profound of subtleties is weakness.Weakness has no dependability, nor is there any need to rely on it.Therefore it is impossible to gain the approval of the masses. One who has the will to work and be stubborn is unworthy of the people. One who struggles to get the approval of the masses, is inexcusable to the people. Therefore, when the profound realizes itself in its own simplicity, it becomes universal. Its simplicity is based on openness and truthfulness. Therefore, when

Cautious they are, trust their nabe, cautious they are, trusting in their nabe. That spermicode, which is between heaven and earth, is hidden in the depths.Should men have it, it would not be used by them; so, when they have it, it must be guarded; if it be not guarded, its use is abandoned; so, then, again when they have it, it must be given up.Therefore, it is said:Heaven, in whom the very souls dwell, alone protects and guides; the Ten Thousand Powers (mankind) which is in close union with Heaven, alone preserves and guides. Thus, when confidence is lost, the assumption of confidence is desirable. Then, when there is no confidence, the intention to assert it may be utilized. Thus, the heavens create a whole, and if found should do one's duty (understanding Heaven). As for the Ten Thousand Powers, on whom the duty depends, it should be held by the government. Therefore, when the government excels in wisdom, its trust (in its divine teachers) shall be in proportion. The adept should not be acted on. Hence, if in need of trust, he should leave it without trust. Therefore, when, (for example,) he who knows but little about the past (see how close the understandings of a Tao) reside with Tao. Thus, when the imperfection becomes abundant, it shall be employed.

Too much anxiety leads to anxiety, too much trust weakens trust.
Too much caution will lead to more caution, too much caution weakens the authority.
Too much caution will lead to more alarm, too much alarm weakens the faith.
Too much faith will lead to too much trust, too much trust leads to nothing.
How would you know the trust that is a trust is worth putting faith in?
If you trust what you see, you will not trust what you see with your eyes.
Trust must be a building block. It is to other men's success or failure that the true value is attributed.
And when the foundation is flawed, the foundation is also broken. Therefore, humility is the foundation of confidence, wisdom is the foundation of faith, cleverness is the foundation for faith, self-control is the foundation for honesty, and trust is the foundation for gratitude.

Should the truly adept know how to use himself to benefit others, others will benefit him back to himself.
If others can be helped, then no one will dare to offend.
If others can be saved, then no one will dare to take life.
The treasure that the sage keeps within himself - The yin and the yang of reality.
Without this yin and yang, he would not be able to attain true light. Without the light, he would not be enlightened. Without enlightenment, he would not be able to succeed in society. Without success in society, he would not be strong enough to contend against a power. Without strength, he would not be able to lead a nation. Without leadership, he would become an enemy of Heaven. Without being an enemy of heaven, he could call himself Heaven's Prince. Without being a leader, he could become a simple man.

Man who has the wisdom to use his strength to benefit the masses

Those who accept their burdens gladly turn their backs upon their own demands
Man who keeps his own strength in check uses it for the benefit of the masses
Therefore:
Man who has all the strength in the world,
One can fight without purpose
One who fights without purpose will find no one to fight with
He will find no one to fight with because he has no purpose
He will find no one to fight with because he is aware of his limits
He will find no one to fight with because he is successful in saving the world
Therefore:
The man who has the wisdom to use his strength to benefit the masses
Is able to become an example for the masses
Those who become an example for the masses will act on their own desire
Those who act on their own desire will find no one to oppose
He can find no one to oppose because he has the capacity to be contentious
To be contentious, one must have ability to act

It is generally believed that knowing a fact is not desirable, or essential for the attainment of knowledge.
What is not recommended is what we know. If it were not essential, who could obtain it? What is essential happens but does not justify its existence. If everything is not indispensable, who would make it?
Whoever has the ability of judging events considers that those that are not essential were created, and he deems that to reject them is a disaster.
This is because he defines the disaster as impossible to be overcome. If someone knows when to discard a point of view, others will not attempt to push him away.
If others are not in agreement, that's good.
If others are not in agreement, if the other side does not argue with them, then they will have no ground for resistance.
However, for those who are above the rules, the most important thing is that no one should dare to be contentious. For this reason, the rule is: The rule is to have courage without fear, The most important is not to use force, For this is the foundation of strength.

Know this, your highest virtue is human compassion. The Virtue of Humanity is mild but firm. Know this, the Virtue of compassionate virtue is perpetual. Know this, the Virtue of perfection is impartial. Knowing these things, why say that your teaching is worthless? The deep is like a cave. A jade is thin, yet still evokes our vital force. Mediocrity makes one bold. Benevolence makes one intelligent. Non-cooperation and cunning make one smart. Therefore, people flounder. Some try to force their will; some to be strong; some to lead; some to act; some to act but lose force; some to be master; some to be ruled over. The state in no wise rules this people. Therefore Heaven guides them, and makes them strong.

True benevolence is impartial, complete, unimpaired, uninterested; good chars. It cannot be improved, it is beyond repair. Stupid benevolence is always inferior, impotent, unhealing, incapable of lasting. The intelligent are good at distinguishing motives; generosity is good at saving the weak. Thus a self-confident man is open to the light. Therefore the people long to be led by the master, but the wise do not crave the simple kinds. Good leaders lead by personal grace and not by compulsion, by being their own perfect instruments, not by trying to polish it; the state can govern only by providing for its people's basic needs.

Nature made those who recognize it Great: Those who do not recognize it become nameless. Between these two the saints are nameless; One who makes his own claim the other is loyal. One who loses his claim, becomes an enemy. Thus, as it is said, Those who understand The Tao are great in their capacity to understand others, [having accomplished the Great]; and yet they understand other people are eminent, [having accomplished their Great capacity]. The advantage of knowing (How to) the Tao is in that only that which seems in accordance with the Tao can be comprehended. To know it in accordance with the Tao is not that which seems in accordance with the Tao. The superior one can be in no other than in his capacity to know; he whose capacity to know is in accordance with the Tao is always in his chief. To be great in knowing, he needs nothing. Know that, just because all creatures and all natural phenomena exist,
The universe is, in no way, defective.
It is an ancient essence.
And can be fully comprehended only through its many qualities,
Through its three aspects: luminous, dark, and Tao.
All that exists is made manifest,
and in the process of becoming manifest.
It is made manifest only by the noumenal.
And through the noumenal, the Tao.
To comprehend the Tao, one needs faith and sincerity.
To be sure, to know the Tao and be with it is not natural, but forced.
Therefore the taoist preaches non-genuine faith and sincerity.
Tao does not just cause all things to manifest,
It produces each of them and sustains them.
It does this by virtue of noumenality.
By not perceiving the being of the self, this is self-effacing, and therefore nameless.
It is therefore uniquely creative,
leading all things to perfection,
And rescuing them from disorder and destruction.
It is merely an inexhaustible stream of truth.
Therefore, he who preaches non-genuine faith and sincerity,
In an effort to experience a clarity of vision,
Must be a fool.
What is inexhaustible is attained through effort,
And what leads to perfection cannot be seen.
Likewise, the taoist identifies his true self with the Tao,
Not with the man of faith and sincerity.
That's his choice, no choice at all.

Only He that recognizes, and that recognize not,
Lives and transmits its germ.
If it were all gone, It would not suffice to manifest the Father.
If the uncountable things were to manifest Him, It would thereby weaken them.
He who bears this burden prospers, and serves.
He who burdens not, Is cautious, cautious not, a man fit for the world.
He who considers Hisself free of danger, Is not from danger;
He who is fit for his place in the world, Is from the world.
The wise live with this; And treasure it as a treasure.
The sage prefers The one above.
The simple attains.
The thorough is not followed.
The dispassionate is lukewarm.

When the tao is in motion, there is always something to do.If there is nothing that can be done, then there's nothing to do.To do nothing is like opening a gate. This is like faith in the Tao:From nothing comes enlightenment. When there is faith in the Tao, there is no lack of belief.Without faith, there is doubt. If you want to know everything, then you must start from nothing. The way to enlightenment is to be open, to be free, to be creative, to be unprejudiced. When you're open to all things, you're enlightened. When you're free, you can realize your innermost self. When you're free of judgment, you're enlightened. The Tao is a gift from the Mother:Those who have been taught it become powerful. Those who are loving become solid. Those who are humble become powerful. Those who are purposeful become able. Those who are determined become perfect. All creatures are taught to depend on the Tao.The creatures that are kept by the Tao begin to become powerful.

If the path is cleaved, The best branch will be cut. From the best to the worst: The Path is always there. Let the path become the worst, and it becomes the Way.He who is clever with words isn't able to calculate the entire course. He can measure the duration of light. That's no time to measure! He who is open-minded, but too logical, doesn't understand the Way; If he doesn't understand it, it is the boundary of the Way. He who is open-minded, but too superficial, doesn't understand the Way; If he doesn't understand it, it is the background of the Way. The wise are open, though: They are detached from the light, yet they are present and go ahead of the light, opening up to the Light, and knowing that, even though they may be close to it, there's no reason to think it is all there is. The basic principles of harmony in nature were lost by the unkind. The natural world became divided by the one, and the four became divided by the other. When the one has been destroyed, there will be no need to defend either. When love is great, nothing is greater, so that no one dare to be first. When wisdom is great, everything becomes more true, so that no one dare to be last. When fearlessness is great, there is nothing less that can be feared. These things therefore have become extinct, and there is nothing left to protect them. One who is great in compassion acts with kindness; one who is great in truth acts with benevolence; one who is great in daring works with diligence. And one who is great in being unable to be able to be complete will be defeated, so that there is nothing left to hold on to.When one's compassion is great, one is always on the side of the weak; One's trust is always strong; One's ability is always outstanding; One's goodness is always genuine. When the great will achieve its goals, one always acts like a great woman. The principle of non-existence is often known as "proof" that heaven and earth will not leave this one regardless of any circumstance.

In ancient times, the four great virtues fell into disfavor, and the people came to refer to themselves as "tao" - "base of being". Therefore, we will divide the world into Tao and emptiness. How "base of being" can differ, we have no knowledge. The Tao must not be differentiated from itself, so there will be no further distinction. We can have great compassion, so no one is left from whom we can send our compassion. We can have great learning, so no one is left from whom we can receive our knowledge. We can have great recklessness, so no one is left from whom we can derive our recklessness. These may be called "authentic acts of compassion". These are "great acts of compassion" that are free from the ordinary thoughts of the people. These are so easy to sustain that none can oppose them. The Four great virtues can be referred to by this.

The sages do not desire war or the creation of an army. If their lord were not grave they would have already made a great conquest. So does the Tao (the Laws of the Universe) exist, but it resides not in a place of heart's desire.
The masters of the Tao constantly want to clarify it, to interpret it and to prove it by a small amount of evidence.
They contrast it with the genuine Tao (the Laws of the Universe). They strive to be present but do not look at it. They talk of it but do not be able to display it.
They contrast it with the mere ordinary way of life (the usage of the tools).
They describe it as the failure of that life.
They differ from it in that they are not able to achieve the pure purity.
In order to take this virtue they are forced to be governed.

THOU art great! Truly great it is - in the limit! How greatly it is diminished! How much less it may be compared with it! Because there is no beginningless abyss, it never has lost any of its original completeness! In the vast heavens, there is no end! It appears to have been born in the sky! Where it has fallen is invisible! Just as the Saint keeps the superior men of the realm around him, so do the Saint keeps his great men. He brings them back to him from a position of superiority, and takes care to show them to be nothing more than men, and not the foremost in the empire. But he does not prefer his superior men to his inferior men; he does not prefer leaders to the inferior ones. The leader who does not seem to prefer his subordinate people, does not belong to the administration of the kingdom. The place where leaders are not taken to be superior beings no place at all. So when the leader endows superior men with it, he also gives them the possibility of outstanding himself in administering the empire. This takes no action but results in their being acclaimed as superior in themselves. should he be virtuous at one time, he'll be less virtuous at the next.
When respect is withheld, the passions will stir up;
but if one is ardent, the other should be without compassion.
For the person in the center of the Tao,
giving love is a matter of life and death.
Why hast thou doth this? To acquire knowledge.
To crave power is an animalistic pursuit.
That is to say, he is an idiot!
A fool who knows is qualified.
He who has learned is intelligent.
He who is an idiot cannot be trusted.
For the intelligent man, not-knowing is natural.
Never employ the instinct to make decisions.
Accomplishing one's goals, practicing the virtue of following the Way.
Appreciating the fruit of the earth.
For these reasons people pay a lot of attention to the big picture, to act out what has been done.
The student of the Tao is free from these passions.

Those who don't let go of virtue, they are still that which is Virtue-not the Tao of life, not the Tao of death. The purpose of the creature is what it is, and what the nature of a thing is: (That which) should not have had virtue it would be evil. The wise person believes that he is leaving something behind and thus he is preserved; [the prudent person is] content with what is left; [the great man] keeps all

The way of the gods is too dark and bright.Great Honors and great Masters will not come.People take to a great celebrity and make their sons (grandchildren) Kings.People treat kings with respect. If they treat kings with respect, they never harm their dignity. If they treat kings with respect, they never defy the law.And if they dare to defy the law, they will suffer many deaths. This is what the Way of the gods is like. However bright and very hard it may be,The great men of old have never despised anyone. This may be the reason why they are so easy to grasp. If the people, in their daily living, treat those great men with kindness, then the honor and glory will be earned. If the people treat all others as potential rivals, then their dignity will be insulted. If the people in their daily life try to flaunt their dignity, then their power and authority will be imperiled. This is the way of old men.

The Tao is bright and white,Just like uncarved wood. The Great Man will never understand the subtle way.Great Teh is not real to him.He seeks the simplicity of the uncarved wood.He acts without desire, and there is no ego.He acts without striving. Facing a baron or magistrate
Take hold of his hall's gate to restrain his baying dogs;
You will be able to control your people's fears and restrain their anger.
Watching the armies, they can only be angry, not afraid;
As a leader who governs by fear,
People hate and fear each other.
Therefore the sage rules by knowing the source of all the men's fears,
And leaving the multitude unmoved by their entanglements.

While he was sitting on a throne, master his men on the steps
Because on the floor they cannot be out of their mind.
His funeral banquets, their citizens cannot hear a word.
For the rulers who create power, even when it is insufficient, show what they have done with skill.
As to who knows the truth, not the rulers;
But only the able.
<|endoftext|>
The ruler of his people
Does not shake himself from the gravity of his duty
While all his officials show no sign of surprise at the mere seeming of harm.
Attending the sacrificial rites of his people,
Must a great belly endure any longer?
Who can remain calm, even in the tumult of a campaign?
No one will dare to act recklessly in war.
Therefore, those who live by keeping quiet
Are skillful with the ulterior force.
Those who make use of ulterior force
Have the tools of the master.
Therefore the masses of men have no fear;
But the rulers have enough cunning to lead them by means of cunning.
So when the masses of men have been drawn to the master,
He advises them with mildness;
That is, sparing them the use of force.
But the leaders who use violence
Will be in the end victorious.

an hour will pass before he puts them to any idle behaviour.
Those who keep the four quarters will never lose their place;
Whoever has overcome all others,
Whoever holds fast to the five

The best people don't force themselves to change. The most competent people are good at complying and taking actions. The people on the bottom don't make a fuss and show their strength by fighting. The people on the highest level can never get any strength from the Tao. Some people thrive by taking advantage of it, Some gain it by exploiting it, Some gain it by showing off it. But the one who gets it is really good at it.
<|endoftext|>
The best are not the dominating. The best are able to acquiesce. The best are able to lead. The best are able to stand on their own feet. The best know how to be harsh,But the people on the bottom are not calculated to stand on their own feet. But the best know how to be gentle,But the people on the high stand on their own feet. And the best know when to be inadequate,But the people on the bottom stand on their heads. The sage is kind and generous but the people on the bottom stand on their heads. The sage is kind but creates chaos. The people of ordinary actions will get them without much work. But the sage is always putting everything he has into it,And being kind and generous all of a sudden. For this reason, people are more active and more accomplished. The Sages have the highest accomplishments in spite of themselves,Therefore they are in the center.

The best teachers do not force their students to change. The most gifted students, on the other hand, must be kept from any clear ideas of themselves. Those with good intentions who give themselves to learning should, therefore, not be taken for their own efforts. Those who struggle to be leaders should be treated like saints. Those who demand dignity should have no place in society. Those who presume to be clever should be praised, while the skillful ones should be rumoured to have been clever. The wise man seems to be in the background in most matters, but he is in the center.
<|endoftext|>
Most good teachers do not press a student to become something. The best students, on the other hand, are always restless. Those who are good at staying calm on the whole are calm in body and mind. Those who are calm in their action and practice will find peace and quiet wherever they go. But in staying calm, the student should keep his eyes and ears open to the beginning of every step

The people of the world live their lives on the edge; they never stop moving.
All of them have abilities that satisfy a merit; they never lose sight of merit.
Therefore, they feel proud of their ability and disdain to show their lack of merit.
The world is like a female wading down the stream, While she is deep within the stream, And may be seen through the glass.
That is why the good people will contrast with the bad people by acting high and high;
by acting assertive, and by retiring.
By acting assertive and retiring, The good people can become the rulers of the bad people;
by acting highly and retiring, the bad people can be the bad people's subjects.
When the people are good at accomplishing what they do,
There is no other way.
The world (that is Tao) is like the river (the Tao), It is always flowing to the left, And it flows in peace to the right.
It cannot be exhausted. And the good people become the bad people's officers.
But the bad people are always being followed by the good people. The bad people know that the good people are good. But the good people have a rule.
The bad people never know that they are bad. The good people do not need good people as their models. But the bad people know they are bad, And they turn to their leaders. The good people never take their ambition too seriously. The bad people will not take their ambition too seriously.

In the world of people
the people live their lives
like the waves on the sea,
even, yet, no matter how they move,
they never stop.
All people have good virtues;
they never lose sight of them.
People in the world
have three main qualities
and they differ from others only in one:
it is called being gentle
(to people that are not good).
Being gentle is about being one with
the great diversity of the people.
Being one with diversity is being one with
great humanity
(in the attitude of the people, and the wisdom
is in how they respond).
Being one with humanity is one with intelligence.
Being one with intelligence is being one with competence.

======================================== SAMPLE 1 ========================================

One who can give cleave,

one who can bear,

one who can return.

These three are never regarded as highest,

They are merely the limits of the being.

If they are regarded as high,
they are insufficient.

So, the highest,
the one who bears,
the one who returns to the Way.
When one can shed tears of sorrow,
he who bears
is the one who becomes peaceful.
When one can lose one's quiet self,
one who becomes peaceful.
These three are regarded as having nothing in common with one another,
yet they form one and the same.
If one values these things,
he will not fear harm.
If the view of generosity is inadequate,
one who bears will receive plenty.
If one values virtue,
one who bears will receive honor.
If one values humility,
one who bears will receive praise.
If one values the Way,
one who bears will not be cast away.
He who does not fear harm
is secure.
To be generous is to receive that which has nothing in common with oneself,
to be kind to the poor,
to be unpretentious,
to be serene,
to be receptive,
to be a fertile valley,
to be one with the Tao,
to be in harmony with the constant!
To give to a good cause is to receive something that has nothing in common with oneself,
to be considerate to those who are unworthy,
to be tolerant,
to be nameless,
to receive honor.
These three do not arise from the Tao itself,
yet they have a common purpose and are to be treasured.
So the kindness of a king -
one who is kind -is to be treasured.
The righteousness of a king -
one who is righteous -is to be treasured.
The character of a king -
one who is gentle -is to be treasured.
The character of a king -
one who is aloof -is to be treasured.
The Tao on the one hand will bring you harmony, and love of the world on the other will be born.
A non-Taoist will live in harmony with his reality, and a saint will be benevolent to all beings, regardless of what they are.

To abandon learning and taking on all the responsibilities would make no one happy. All the world has knowledge, but nothing in particular, so it is not "worthy." People all have responsibilities to others, and none of them are "worthy." They all have the knowledge, but it is not "worthless." They all have responsibilities to themselves, and each one has a sense of self worth. Self worth is a valuable asset, but it is not "worthless." Knowing you are worth is not knowing you are not worth. Trusting yourself is not trusting others. That is why the wise leader, being open-minded, is greatly valued.
<|endoftext|>
The world is of one mind,Everyone of the world is already present in their natural way,But the Tao flows like water.Even though everyone is willing to submit to others,Except for the princes and dukes.Only the people who can use the great circle of arms, have the natural capacity to show their superior dignity. This is not for the benefit of the world.Because of the master person's great dignity,He can show humility.Because he can show humility,He can still retain the greatness.Everyone's virtues are not sufficient,And the world expects everything from them,Even at their depths,Those who remain supreme are not sufficient. It is necessary to create great talents,Even if the person who have them are not considered master,They should receive their merit from the master.Whoever is able to show humility can show his personal qualities,And whoever show personal qualities,Can show himself as truly great. All the people have their accomplishments,Yet no one can merit their respect. The master acts at the lowest of the valleys,Yet he alone can carry on the whole of the world.
<|endoftext|>
The whole of the world looks up to the Tao, but nobody has a special talent to use it. Others try to show their nobility by showing off. Even the nobles have different ways of doing things. The inferior person does not care. She just shows off. There are no boundaries for the person who chooses the Way.
<|endoftext|>
The world's respect for the Way is apparent, but there's no one with a talent to use it. The Masters try to make themselves exalted, but nobody shows them much merit. The Kings try to be grand, but nobody shows him much advantage. Although some people try to be in tune with Nature, they never become superior to Nature
======================================== SAMPLE 3 ========================================

If your loyalty to the universe is not enough, then you will gain nothing by using loyalty to the Universe. If loyalty is insufficient to embrace the universe, you will lose your loyalty and gain nothing. Those who have advanced knowledge and fine talents, those who live like kings and nobles, those who have more than enough, and those who are virtuous do not desire a life of affluence. Such desires lead to danger and misery. Is it not said that those with hard lives are the common people who lose their way in darkness? In that dark place I have found the light. Since I have found it, I have given my loyalty and allegiance.
<|endoftext|>
Lead with guile and trust.
Use force to win a battle,
but do not aim to do a one-way thing.
No one can win by using force.
Force is for the purpose of force, to achieve the ends of power.
If you want to lead the world, let go of your pretense.
If you are not good at leadership, you will meet with resistance.
Courage and skill and sense of purpose will inspire others.
Relax, be gentle,
just step aside.
It is enough to struggle,
but victory is won by quiet and exhaustion.
There is always someone to follow the direction.
The people are never stubborn.
There is a leader, who is always ready to lead.
This is what I call serenity and intelligence.
<|endoftext|>
To have too much is to lose. To have too much is to gain. Too much education and experience, too much noble rank, too much wealth, too much distinction, and too much contention. By way of contrast, the other kind of loss is not loss but gain. That is why few people know how to lead them how they ought to lead, how to yield to their ideas how they ought to yield to their actions, how they ought to know how to step back.
It is because they do not know this that they are led astray.
Therefore, a man of substantial intellect tells us what to do, and of his own judgment he gives directions to men in this world and in the next.
There is a great difference between man's valuing outward show and valuing inwardliness and loyalty and courtesy. These two are independent of one another. They are the same, but different, and as such we call them the different gifts.

Understanding the Tao is not to be sought by anyone.Who seeks it with an animal body. Will perish.Who delights in Heaven but does not appreciate the world,Can endure for many lives. When a man acts with righteousness, heaven accepts him. When he acts with violence, earth responds. Therefore he who knows good from evil gives life to good, He who knows kindness from wrong gives life to mean.He who knows humility from arrogance chooses the left-hand path, He who knows goodness from harm the right-hand path.Hence the sage watches that the good is obeyed,And the poor, but loves kindness.Hence he knows when nothing is without a reason.Because the wise guard the subtle nature of things,He does not tangle with that which falls into the hands of the foolish.Who knows the Way teaches the world but does not teach by means of words.Who knows the Tao teaches the world but does not teach by means of words.
<|endoftext|>
To know the Tao is to not serve,And to value the world is to not honor.Whoever desires to be distinguished,Can only be identified. The wise accept evil as a condition to be put to;The superior act as if no other existed.A man's loyal kindness is to win favor with people,The still, unmoved deeds are to be feared. To know that is to know the condition of things:An unemotionally an indifferent,Still, still wise take good as they have to,For their wants are not obtained by a man's words. The unemotionally intelligent possess wisdom,But not subtlety,And the unemotionally informed, possess non-being,And they hold the world as their refuge,Yet do not contend with the Tao.Who is unemotionally intelligent is fit to rule,Who is non-being, is fit to rule.Whoever is on the side of the Tao is not not in conflict with the word,Who is non-being is not in conflict with the Tao.Knowledge of the Tao is to be impartial;Knowledge of the spirit of virtue is to treat men kindly;Knowledge of the spirit of character is to do no harm;Knowledge of the spirit of humility is to act humbly;Knowledge of the spirit of loyalty is to use that of courage;Knowledge of the spirit of righteousness is to exalt holiness;Knowledge of the spirit of gent

One who is like a son, as sharp as a sword, as quick as a horse, as square as the Earth, is capable of uniting men in a great scheme. If you know that the Tao is going to be great, and you have let it go, but you do not wish to give up, it is your destiny, or it will be taken from you.To be like a son is good.To be so quick as a horse is good.To be as square as the Earth is good.To be as tall as the Earth is good.To be as humane is good.Hence, a small man will become great, a large man will become great, and a great man will come from the world. The people in the world
Are not all content with that which is great and noble
On the contrary, some of them
Oneness with the ten thousand things,
Therefore are looked upon as too good for their own good.
The people here
Are not deluded;
They receive from this world things that they have no need to possess;
They respect this world as
well as from that.
To not do so
Is like being lost in the world of the ten thousand things.
This difference between those who are content
And those who are not
Is the reason that people have different opinions
According to whether they are content with the the rest of
The world or with the Ten Thousand things.
If one endures on what the others have
And is content with it, and is not deluded
Then one is at one with the world.
For what it is worth, the world has no need of peace.
Peace is the treasure of Heaven.

Lao Tze says:The ten thousand things cannot meet the Tao of Tao,
Because it is too great and too glorious, the ten thousand things cannot meet it,
Because it has no issues as issues to compare with the universe.
Therefore, some people
Are not deluded to accept it,
Others are deluded to reject it.
The elitist like taking things as it is,
And because of that, the elitist are not satisfied
And they do not make the world full.
That is to say: Some
Lose the oneness of with them and overcome it,
And some also lose the oneness and fail to overcome it.
Other people are stubborn to take possession of
They do not seem content when the oneness is lost.
The ones who get content in the oneness
Are distinguished, and those who gain the oneness
Are esteemed. It is not that they are exalted
It is that they are above these others.
Because they are not elevated by this,
Some people will give them different answers.
And some will deny them all credit.
Others will let them flourish as they will,
And in so doing, return to being a part of the Tao.
¹The people of the world

The people value simplicity, and accept good works even when they have no money. People value goods that have no value, and reject them. When people value nothing, and reject everything, then there is no one left to value. What is the value in knowing what is the value? Is it just the value or does it include everything? For example, love, if you take the time to properly care for others, is the foundation of a successful relationship, and when it is stripped away you lose the foundation. It is said: "If you love the Earth, you will trust it. If you love the Earth, you will respect the Earth." When you love the Earth, you will gain trust and become part of the Earth. This is called the Elusive Virtue.

When people see righteousness as the work of the TAO, they take action like TAO.
When people see benevolence as the work of the TAO, they take action like benevolence.
When people see safety as the work of the TAO, they take action like security.
When people see equality as the work of the TAO, they take action like equality.
Therefore, the people value these as the tools of TAO.
They value freedom of choice as the main building block of people.
They value ease of action as the main basis of people.
So, the people value them, but they do not use them.
Therefore, they value them, but they do not force.
So, they value them, but they do not allow to it.
Therefore, they value them, but they do not cause them to use them.
It is said:
Therefore, they are philanthropists because they love the Earth.
And when they love the Earth, they have given birth to the Earth.
Thus, they are like those who love life.
They value those who are useful, but do not force them.
They value those who are useful, but do not rule them.
It is said:
Therefore, they are not distinguished.
Therefore, they are on the same level.
Therefore, they will not struggle.
In the world, many people value this and act accordingly.
Achieving righteousness as the TAO, even though you do not meet TAO, it is as if you are not.
What is true about the righteousness of TAO?
It is as if there is no righteousness.

The Great Man sees the BIG, but cannot name it.Heaven and earth call it mysterious, so unnameable. All the male and the female are born with it.
The Tao, of its own accord, names and names.
It does not act by itself, it takes others' names, and does not distinguish one from another.
If you want to be a great man, live in accord with this Tao.
If you do not live in accord with the Tao, you will miss the mark.
If you try to be great in spite of it, you will lose the innermost heart.
If you want to be a great scientist, you must value the Small.
You must value the second, not the first, and discard your ambition to be great.
If you do not value this, you will never achieve your greatness.
If you try to be great in spite of this, you will never find the inner joy.
If you try to act great, you will then become an empty shell of an empty shell.
If you do not respect the Tao, you lose your natural self-confidence.
You will lose the ability to control the Earth.

The great man looks for patterns in the great, but cannot name it.
The Tao of the world goes by the names of "Hidden", and "Emptiness".
Of the male and the female, there are many in the world, And so, it cannot be named.
If you seek after the Great,
You will see the great are hidden within you.
If you seek after the Lesser,
You will see the lesser hidden within you.
If you desire to be great
You will endure.
If you want to be better
Then do so.
If you don't like to do better
Then you will be nameless and unworthy.
The Great Man practices the Highest Virtue.
He values Tao but does not presume to master it.
It is Tao that defines himself, and not man.
By valuing Tao, he considers the Great.
By not valuing Tao, he contemns the Great.
The Great Man does not value violence.
When violence is no longer required, he seeks peace.
When violence is no longer valued, he finds the peace to be valued.
He values the natural, and does not value man's pursuits.

Or, as bright, or white,
But as the subtlety and invisibility

Those who advance in the Way do not see

Those who advance in the Way

The Master does not live in a field of light and thus shines. The Tao Master does not live in a field of brightness and thus shines.
The one benefits others in a positive way while remaining a saint. The other benefits others in a negative way while remaining a criminal.
The masters are aware of the light, the darkness, the darkness of the universe.
Only through awareness can one benefit and benefit another. This is called principle of non-action and ability to not interfere in others. The master does not dwell in glory or in any kind of praise or acclaim. When he does, he shines. When he dwells in sorrow or grief, he is still a master. For he is truly living in non-action. In this way he is free of thought and action. It is not because he has come to a state of bliss, not because he is satisfied. This is to be living in the state of unconscious awareness. One that is free of thought and action has never lived a glorious life.

In the whole world, how many mighty men are unable to play the role of being content with the role of a little king?
After all, being content with the role of a little king,
One is able to embody the power of heaven.
Being able to embody the power of heaven, One is able to fulfill the role of a great leader.
Being able to fulfill the role of a great leader, One is able to live well with others.
Being able to live well with others, One is able to govern without fear.
Being able to govern without fear, One can live long without residing in material things.
Therefore, having the material world as your shelter and personal safe haven,
You will be of use to the whole world.
Being of use to the whole world, You will be of use to the four quarters of heaven.
You will be of use to the four quarters of heaven because of your ability to keep [the] body in balance.
<|endoftext|>
If you let go of body, you will not be liable to fail [because of the utility of the teachings].
For it is by letting go of body that one avoids being forced by circumstance.
If you value personal safety, then the "only man" will hardly be able to interfere.
If you value personal happiness, then the "man of the world" will hardly be able to interfere.
Therefore the Master expresses himself well and is therefore easy to please:
He who is adept in seeing the individual and yet wants nothing more than his own person,
is like the standard in heaven; he is as simple as the sea in the midst of waters.
In the realm of affairs, all that is common is known,
and all that is scarce is known to have its worth.
But whoever acts with intelligence,
for he who is the leader, will have nothing to fear.
The Tao is a soft substance that may take many forms. If you desire to use it, [Tao] always stays

Attaining lofty character and public correctness is in keeping with Tao.
Although people may argue about who is right, there is no one else who is any better than they are.
One does not negotiate with Tao, and therefore is truly secure.
<|endoftext|>
This person attains world rank of equality with others and complies with Tao.
He does not argue, and thus avoids argument.
Attaining world rank, he fails to get what he wants.
He is stubborn.
Inadequately, he is selfish.
Because he is inadequately, he acquires an abundance of things.
That is why he is victorious in the realm.
Because he acquires an abundance of things, he is aware of his dependence.
His Inner Life is the center of his consciousness.
In the Inner Life, one can see oneself as nothing.
If one's Inner Life is no thing, one can be aware of oneself as One.
One's awareness of self-ness causes one to conquer all others.
To conquer the others, one must have no self.
Having conquered the others, one is sullied and discarded.
Therefore, one's Inner Life is a treasure that can be used to benefit the world.

Those who attain great hallows, and avoid contention, are perfectly just.
I had heard that the world considers those who are great one fair;
but such are they who are fair not;
and those who are dark in their virtue, no less than other men.
Thus do they not contend; so need I not contend.
In the beginning of their existence, these are mutually correct.
Those who attain great wisdom, do not fight,
as though I were no opponent.
That is why they attain great life.
It is when they attain life, that I acknowledge the part which is more than the whole.
And I embrace life and receive life.
It is when I receive life, that I recognise it as infinite.
How then can I suffer, till I receive life, as though I were no existence?
Thus is there no contention for them;
and no discrimination for me;
for it is the eternal distinction.
What this means is that, although they contend for each other, I, too, alone endure.
By their tenacity they conquer all

Those who are at war are so different from everyone else. They possess one of the three essentials. Give them compassion. And they will become people of compassion. Help them overcome their fears, and they will become people of confidence. Use their cunning, and they will be clever. Abandon their good fortune, and they will become people of extreme misfortune. There is a reason these three should receive so much compassion and pity. It is because they are so different from everything else.

The highest virtue is loving of men,The love of men is love of Life; The highest strength is to be gentle; The gentle are the people,The people are the strength,The strong do the worst,The worst are those who are far away. Therefore, the wise men tend to Love Life and Do the Worst.Because they love Life and do the Worst,They are bright enough to lead the world,And those who are Wise have no great recklessness.Achievement, done at the Best, is Reckless, Reckless, so is this:All sorts of things come to completionBut one thing takes much of them:Fear.Only by being afraid of things as they are, Will one be able to have the Way, And thus to reign in the world.

By discarding the old and joining with the new,Be as though you were the mother of all things. Why shouldn't the common people come to you with kindness?Because they are a model for you.Always be ready to help whoever asks for help; And don't show off.Just follow them in the face of difficult situations. The people will be glad to meet you.If you don't have power to coerce people,There should be no need to show people you're famous.Whenever your compassion is heartfelt, you become generous.Whenever your fairness is sincere, you become straight-laced.When you have confidence, you can be confident in every step. You never lose your touch; You come to everything effortlessly. If you have no competition, no one can ever control you.Nowadays,People are doing what they do in large numbers,Leading the people and receiving support from them. For once, it is because you are caring and kindThat people feel it is possible to honor you.

Give up and embrace that which is not existing.Act as if you belonged to every other person,And hence may be your model for the universal people. Therefore, observe the others' look without judging them,And your attitude will become like that of a generous person. As you act with such compassion,No one will reject you. This you can always do,And no misfortune will befall you.Everything is orderly. The affairs of the world flow from your leadership.Although you are less powerful than those in the past,You shall never be discredited.Cultivate kindness, and treat others without fear.If you transform a whole world by your kindness,You shall be the leader of the world. So, be a gentle leader,And use kindness as the foundation of your society.

Pride can bring success, egotism may produce others. The leader's position may bring others: This too is part of the Te is the role of the humble leader. The people love and worship him, for he values and teaches them: he is ready to say yes or no. Only when he has nothing to lose and nothing to fear, can he dare to act rashly, daring to give a deathblow to a community. If one has sufficient confidence in a leader, then he can greatly expand his authority. The humble is esteemed in the world. Pride can change; pride is not. Pride brings merit, and merit brings glory. And glory is what princes fear. They do not fear what may come after pride. In being humble, the noble can appear more noble than others. He can have the easier of receiving the high places in a community. For that reason he may build up a base greater than the hills. Thus the noble has the high place, but he has also a base beneath which he dwells. The noble is with the common people and in serving them, bringing them food and support. On this account he may dwell in the valley and in the ocean.
<|endoftext|>
Pride can lead to success, self-righteousness to spoil success.
Valiant leadership attracts others, and we must contend with them.
Pride creates gain, but gain is not the end of good deeds.
By simply being like others, you can accomplish a lot.
When you stand on your own two feet, you attract others.
In kindness, you might call yourself 'kind' but you never expect too much.
For a wayward leader, you'd be better off acting as a strategist.
<|endoftext|>
In times of triumph, the highest may be dishonored. Pride, with glory, may follow the wayward one.
Thus:
Whenever you are in the front rank, you will find most people (on the inside) well pleased with you.
When you are in the back rank, you will find them well pleased with you.
The high status, if anything, will be tarnished.
When you are in the back rank, the status will be tarnished;
When you are in the front rank, the status will be most likely to be lost.
This is because:
To shine is to lose the shine.
To lose the shine, you

Good men are wont to be easy.
Too easy sometimes brings misfortune.
All creatures have their traits;
Yet the Sage is one with them all.
He avoids giving his own image as their image;
He prefers the fruit that his own hand produces.
<|endoftext|>
Beauty is a valley.
Despise it.
So too,
a valley is an abode.
The wild life calls for rest.
The way of the Sage is to keep them all at ease,
So people find comfort
and quiet.
<|endoftext|>
I am the reason for the beauty.
I am the reason for the sorrow.
These two exist together
within a person
These two exist together
within a valley
The person of the universe
looks down upon me
I look up to the person of the universe
We are loved equally
Because of our abilities and abilities
Because of our differences
The universe has loved us equally.
At the end
the universe loves us equally.
The universe gives us life,
And the person gives birth to the universe.
For some we find fulfillment,
for the other, sorrow.
All this exists within the soul.

The beauty of woman's beauty is
This
Because beauty is the valley of Innocence
And from Innocence, Death also appears
For the parts of a woman are seen
The parts of a man have been shown
Hence it is that a man looks for them in a woman
A woman looks for them in a man
And when one does not look for them in a woman,
Then one may be loathe to deny it to her
The heavenly bounty is based on joy
It is based on hope
The essence of allness is based on love
It is based on healing

As for natural beings, they take care of us
And thus they win the love of the universe
And thus they can be received of the people.

The old saying goes, "Courage cannot be achieved by calculation; It is only through gentle love that it can be realized.A person's strength is not measured by ability, but by their heart. Therefore the master regards people with compassion, or 'lao yang.'Since the former is higher than the latter, in whatever way he can he values his family, or "Ying" [the mother of the state].<|endoftext|>
So we should
Teach humility first, not for our own sake. I have grown as man, so am able to display intelligence as man, like an infant.
As a symbol, an artifact; as a mirror, so useless as a boug. I have become so holy and good, like an infant.
The artifact is merely something I owe to my body.
I value family, like an infant.
Heavens help, we only need the mother.
What heaven accepts he puts in front of it, not for himself, but only for the people of the world. What heaven rejects he seeks after, not for itself, but only for the people of the world.
What heaven insists upon he accepts as his whole body, like a fish.
Whatever it stands upon, we must hold to. If we don't, then what follows will be so much inauspicious.
<|endoftext|>
Heaven is filled with people, but nothing is perfect.
The natural way is more perfect.

Give the people humility first:
This will
prevent them from being used by you.
Give them trust,
This will bring them into your fold.
Give them a living,
This will induce them to live.
Give them the Spirit,
This will make them full of love.
Give them a country,
This will cause them to unite.
Give them a vessel,
This will make them master of them.
Give them power,
This will make them strong.
<|endoftext|>
Give people humility before they come to your business.
Give people trust in order to carry out your work.
Give people power, because their true nature makes them dependable.
Give people wealth, because their true nature ensures their independence.
Give people a homeland, because

In times of peace the people live in peace and peace, and the people rejoice in it.Therefore, those with great wisdom are good at being good at not being good, and those with great foresight are good at knowing when to plan and when to act. Therefore, leaders who are good at being good at being foreknowledge are good at knowing when to turn back, and those who are good at being good at knowing when to act are good at knowing when to stop. But I say that for those who are too much like others they become like little children. When the great people have enough knowledge, they are wise enough to avoid arrogance. The great people have enough wisdom to avoid confidence. Therefore, the great people are true rulers.

What is great is not great at all times. The human being is a ridiculous creature. Therefore,The wise man never acts great at all times. The wise man, by this action, becomes great.By this action, he is aware of his worth.By this awareness, he is free from self-contempt.By this freedom from self-contempt, he is aware of the great.By this awareness, he is enlightened.By this enlightenment, he is foresighted.By this foresight, he is supreme. Therefore, to realize greatness, one seeks to be the world's greatest. To realize that others are greater than oneself, one seeks to be the world's lesser. To realize that others are the same as oneself, one seeks to be the world's superior. Thus, to realize greatness is to be great.

When men have freedom from selfishness, virtue will flourish. When the world is filled with liars and thieves, virtue will come to be.If everyone believes the people will be good,It will be all right. But if everyone acts self-righteous,It will not be right. Therefore, if everyone acts self-righteous,But justice will not be upheld,People will avoid it.Therefore, those who are not self-righteousAre beyond righteousness.I say, be good at being goodAt being good, you are found:The great is right; This is the great truth.Let your true nature dwellAnd your life will be filled with happiness.

Should they bring about a delusion of a sage, things are great which greatly disagree. They are a great with great. If they bring about a delusion of a sage, it is perfectly fine for him not to be great. If he is great, he is at the limit of Tao. If he is not at the limit, he will remain Tao in his heart. If the heart were not at the limit, how much less could he be true. He who dwells in nature is intelligent. He who dwells in Heaven Dwells in Dao. That is why he is honorable; that is why he is faithful. He who dwells in the Tao does not act exalting himself. Thus he never leaves Tao.

One of extraordinary and external greatness Goes beyond how great. Goes beyond how great, Yes, this is called the average; In this average, Yes, this is called the extreme; Are those things which are average and extreme deep enough? It may be said, 'It is like this that it is that deep that not all is deep enough!' That is, It is like this that it is like the limits of the Tao; For it is the limits of the Tao that it is near Tao. Who has attained Tao, To show the true may call how great is a bad! One of the Great-Valley lords Goes beyond the Tao; Goes beyond the Tao, This is called his substantial form. Therefore in the realm of substance one can only be inadequate, There's no substance one can be inadequate To be adequate one has to possess 'true' nature. True nature cannot be attained. As for affairs of the world, it follows that if one has a good policy, they must be cautious.

Who has a great talent and is not great Is great, great, and so on. If you look at greatness, it is like counting a bucket or throwing a dart. When you look at long-drawn virtuosity, it is like watching a marionette in motion. When you look at great versatility, it is like having no center. How is it possible that you can be great, and also not be great? If you see great as lacking ability, you see that great is true. When you see insufficient ability as true, you see that you can be great. How is it possible to be great, but also not be great? Because there are extremes.
