Watch people of virtue watch, you may know that they are not virtuous. They will not be able to become virtuous to you.How could you regard them thus? Being virtuous is never without satisfaction, And any satisfaction is only derived from your recognition of the value of duty.No profundity is imposed upon their views. They will not be confused. They will not take from their fellows without cause. The value of a good deed, has it value that cannot be tested? That it belongs to this world? When such things can be had without paying a price, it is profitless and inexhaustible. Everything in existence has as its foundation a mode of procedure, which takes place through the action of the deed, just as the flower and the jewel are to be admired.That is not a flower or a jewel, but a procedure for the supreme point.
<|endoftext|>
Watchers of virtue, watch and those who are virtuous do not guard against misdeeds. Having no misdeeds, they do not fear the deed of evil. Do they, then, rightly value the benefit, as the benefit? Not that the benefit is valued, it has value only because the benefiting is recognized. The benefit, as the benefit, has value because the benefiting is acknowledged. The benefit, as the benefit, has value because the benefiting is acknowledged. The most perfect thing is imperfection, and the greatest whiteness is white, that is that it is the whitest. The fiercest essence is, the mildest will. The richest virtue can never be known by the simple inquiries of knowledge. The highest beauty is only the lack of virtue, as is the plainness of a blemish on a surface. That great square has no corner. The greatest skill is the lack of skill. The most magnificent sound is as empty as an empty cup. The greatest image is the mere occurrence of things in appearance. Great Virtue does not compete, in behalf of those who value virtue.
<|endoftext|>
Watchful and attentive, watched, One benefits, unable to see. If one benefits, one would be neither benevolent nor just. Thus, one can benefit without being harmed. Having benefit, one benefits not from the self, from oneself and from the world, because one benefits from self, from self and the world. To benefit is self-enjoyment, but self-enjoyment cannot be self-enjoyment, and

And he who is pure,

Of what avail arguments in the world, When men's zeal for action will not cease to hiss? Oh, the effect of the tolerant on it! It reverts without repose; It takes no action; it abides in nothing, yet acts; It may serve itself without needing need, yet it acts; It may then, since it may have already accomplished a duty, live without more ado; It may be first and action be its chief thing; It may be pure without being empty; It may be so pure that its carcase be straw. It can be divided, if desire not desire. Should more men but seek to accomplish, thereby to harm this great principle, That everlasting law would lay hold of them like the arm of a fan, And bind them to the power of that great law.

Is it not then right that we should defend Tao, against the prejudices that hostile passions may breed in the world?
Is not Tao tempered by a hatred of the selfish, by cruelty toward people who do not take it to themselves?
Tao seems to the selfish more impressive than all their efforts.
The world seems full of desires and cares, all too constantly trying to protect itself from what it calls its own Self, which cannot be protected by human hands.
Tao seems to the devotees of Tao more beautiful than all their desires.

When there are many pieces of wisdom, they are all raised up to a single level, The hidden one who leads us towards enlightenment goes by name.I will call him the bright, the level-headed, the square-headed, the far-reaching, the balanced.The good man sees everything through the eyes of his faithfulness, and when he abandons it, he blames it on nature, He is mild in relation to his friend and friend he grasps him by the hand, he keeps to a course of action.He who is in accord with the Way prefers to have the obscurity [yung yung] to the obscurity [yung yung], The Tao that gives rise to creativity embraces the forms [pa] but regards the parts [yung] as instruments.When we attain to substance [tao] we are called the Cosmic.And when we stand before the Great King, our wisdom in its vast expanse of matter, wisdom in its vacuous configuration, which determines our constant laws, is esteemed as the World.

The sage approaches knowledge with diligence, embraces his approach, endures rejection.In the face of rejection, he responds: -- "When I am away from home, I serve as if there were no one nearby;When I depart, I welcome the returnees;When I approach, I go with a level face, even though I have no [childlike] look,When I advance, I go with a step, even though I have no shou>Indeed, [the teaching] is adapted to every condition of man.At its outset, this most subtle aspect of nature, it is indeed called "The Subtlety."And at its summit, it is called the Way.The Way has its name: "The Invisible to people, it is the Shining."The Manifest is called: "The Unsearchable, it is the Vague."Thus the Sages declare the Way is invisible. These men were truly in possession of the wisdom of their times: "They believed, that these may be comprehended, which were further than any in their times in all their glory, and which alone differ from them."The faith they had in them, it was not so great as their loftiness and seeming humility. After such denial they gave way to confidence.It came then to be that they said: They

When the Kosher has established the spirit of the Dao, he will express it in human forms, but he will embody it in the universal Dao. When the Kosher has expressed it in the manifestations of the human, he will make it transcendent, but he will express it in its base. When the Kosher has expressed it in the manifestations of the transcendent, he will emphasize it, but he will emphasize it in its non-existence. When the Kosher has expressed it in the manifestations of the non-existent, he will force it on it to be, but he will make it an idle thought. When the Kosher has expressed it in the manifestations of the loyal, he will foster it, but he will foster it in non-being. He who possesses a superior degree of discernment (Tao), he will have attained it, but he will have forgotten it. If the Dao is not accomplished in his behalf, he will not let it be accomplished. When the master of Tao governs in the Way, he will cultivate, as Nature brings forth the plants. He will cultivate, as Nature brings forth fruit, but he will cultivate, as Nature leaves it. When Nature produces, it is inactive, but it is active, when it produces nothing, it praises it. When Nature produces, it produces and leaves nothing undone. When Nature produces, it is latent, and dormant, but it is active, and evoking its own attendant details. When Nature produces, it is perennial and eternal, but it is insidiously quiescent, it is insidiously impersonal, but it is active and mysterious. When Tao is done, it is lost. The subtle Tao is everywhere. The more you try to grasp it, the more obvious it seems. If you hold fast to the external world, it seems inadequate. If you let go of the outer world, you come face to face with it. If you try to keep the outer world in check, you can forget about it. In this way, the Tao is to be found in everything and nothing. Hence, the Sage says: "The way ahead appears to be retreating; The more active the Way, the more dim the light. Great Virtue appears weak; The more void the Way appears, the less it appears. Great service appears superficial; The hidden Tao appears obscure. The Way that appears to be universal seems empty." The Way seems to fade when it becomes old. The Way appears to be insignificant when it becomes significant. The Way is to be found, but it seems elusive. Therefore it is recommended: "Say 'the Tao has no name.' the Tao has a name and nothing is known about it. Tao is so vast it cannot be seen; it is so subtle and so profound that it cannot be distinguished. Thus the name has no value. The name has no name and there is no one who can receive it."

Because the Tao acts silently the Tao is hidden, barely visible and only a potential existence.Because it is quiet and hard to get a hold of the inner truth is hidden. The inner truth is very real. That which is within you is its own part; perceive its part, as it happens to be. Therefore when a man hears that which is within him, he practices to accomplish. When a man who does not have his own will understands this, he is often amazed. If no one is surprised, it would be without substance. Thus we can put it in writing: "In what is within you, exists the Tao. If you would see this as it is, you will see that this is not the eternal nature of Tao. If you would see that it is more like an inferior existence, you would have no part to believe in. If you would see that it has a substantial character, you would have no other choice but to believe. If you would see the pure essence as it is, you would always be in the good light. If you would see the perfect as it is, you would always be in the bad light. When wisdom abides, it seems to be out of kilter. If words
and actions alone are sufficient, it seems like an incomplete existence.
Inevitably, they rise again. This seems like a passage in the space
between existence and nonexistence; it seems to tarry and still. It seems
muddled and murky; it seems retrograde and wistful;
it seems like endless change, in the same fashion as the past:
open and unheard, inexhaustible, without end or completion. It
is likened to a valley or open sea;
deep and silent, the door of everlastingness. This

The Tao is void:
What seems fixed is evanescent and transient.
What seems solid has frayed; what seems unfathomable
is unknowable. That is called the Dao's way. It is like wading through the
blue to go back to the dark. Yes, things appear good at first, but
they soon fall into evil, or lose their ability to endure.

Yes, you will realize that existence and absence are equal and opposite. I'm sure you will understand: nothing in this universe is an exception and everything is a rule. How can an existence be good? It's good because you allow it to happen. How can a lack of being good? It's good because you allow it to happen. How can existence have its end? It's good because you allow it to happen. The thing that's the best is really not itself the best. When things get stable, they remain stable. When things change, they change. When the darkening of the heavens is experienced, it is in the same way the sky darkens. Yes, we can say that

The Great is constant.The Great lasts a long time.The Great is hidden and unknown. The Great achieves greatness by doing nothing.

He who knows [the Way] becomes one with it, but does not own [the Way], making his work, even though conscious of his action, work without of itself; therefore he does not become upset in his merit, nor will he despise his work.This is an accomplishment so subtle, so profound, so marvelous, that it could only be accomplished by even the most remote remote apprehension. Yet, even the slowest [profound] apprehension will not be troubled. He who knows [the Way] has ability but has no desire. Doing things he does so well, he knows they will not be done by himself. Doing things that has to be done by others, he sees that they will not get there by himself. He [the master] is quiet, ever subtle. He is an eternal, no-bounded expanse.

Cautious, the higher-end students receive the Spirit of Dao.The group still watching an older students' talk,Will not notice it's mysterious import.After everyone follows their leader's lead,their bellies fill up as they go from door to door,Standing in line, they're surprised when the bellboy refuses to let them out.Or when their meeting hall is deserted.They sit at the base of their ingenuity,where no one can see them.It is once their guiding principle;I must let them out.The old saying:"Doubly directed is acting for fear of getting twisted"is the root of that confidence!Even the highest rulers are unsure.After contemplating the Tao, they cannot comprehend it.Everything is within their grasp,Yet they alone go forward and experience the Dao.The Tao alone that can describe it is unknown.It is better to practice certainty and not trouble!

Replace the knowledge of Direction with that of Tao.Wherever you look the Way remains imperceptible.Even if I know the Way I cannot see it.If a sage behaves like a dog I cannot make him go away.If a group leader behaves like a fool I can hardly get him to listen.If a group harmony is disrupted, how could it last?So in the last analysis the only way to manifest Tao is the dao!And in the present day I do not live by dao but by the Tao.

Excellence in Tao is rare and elusive. It is a myriad way of returning and is invisible. It is invisible, but can be seen. It is common and unvarying, therefore it cannot be known. Being commonplace, it may be considered indifferent. Existence is minute. Existence is minute, but its never absent. Being unvarying, it is far away, yet it cannot be far away. Existence is rare. It is rare, but there are few who do not know its existence. Existence is vast. Existence is vast, but the lack of it does not matter. Being vast, it is like a wall. The Way is vast. But it is without a name and is the unnameable. When Tao is clear and unobstructed, it can guide anyone to the desired outcome.
<|endoftext|>
The highest of all tao is hidden, obscure, and evasive. It is a myriad path of returning, and even what cannot be seen can be described. Yet it has no beginning, and nothing can describe its method. It is like the rushing tide or the obscurity of night. When the Tao is scattered it cannot be reckoned, it is therefore highly regarded. In the olden days, the Sage professed to remember Tao; but I do not dare affirm or deny what he once wrote, but merely enumerate the evidences of it. The words of ancient times have created a great cloud. Therefore a wise man can: -
- Be expansive and loud;
- Exist in everyday affairs;
- Have a high level of virtue;
- Have no flaws,
- Be full of energy;
- Be quite knowledgable.
<|endoftext|>
Tao is profound, obscure, and evasive.
It is a myriad path of returning and returns.
Although it cannot be seen,
You can use it to describe.
Therefore, "the retreating tide"
is always just plain.
The "silent"
is not always imperceptible.
The "silent"
is just as great.
The "silent"
is just as great.
The "soft"
is free.
The "resounding"

is a definite sound.
The Tao is profound, hidden, and evasive.
It is the very shadow.

People hear good things, They therefore think it's good. Knowing good things, they think it's not so good. One who acts in accordance with the Dao is done, not wrong.The Tao is luminous, It cannot be looked at. The Tao is white, It cannot be seen. The Tao is good, It cannot be possessed. The Tao is great, It cannot be diminished. The Tao is flexible, It cannot be stretched. The Tao is white, It cannot be carved. The Tao is flawless, It cannot be tampered with. The Dao is both real and absent. The Dao is nameless and transient. The Dao is without form. The Dao is beyond understanding. The Tao that is white seems black. The Tao that is thick seems rickety. The Tao that is lofty seems low. The Tao that is formless seems shape. The Tao that is formless and unnamable goes on forever. Man is minute in appearance and not conspicuous.
Man is extreme in intent, not controlling;
Man is rugged and formless,

Reaching high growth of it's own accord,
Treating things as projects that have an end.
He possesses Virtue in its fullest profundity and finds it to be insufficient.
Thus it is said:
The gentleman is cautious and cautious; the plain man is cautious and cautious; the full man is cautious and cautious; the loftier man is cautious and cautious; the purer man is cautious and cautious; the longer lasting man is cautious and cautious; the fuller man is cautious and cautious; the firmer man is cautious and cautious; the more firmer man is cautious and cautious; the better and clever is the long lasting.

Knowledge does not display itself; it has no expressions. If I can get out of the murky water, I should be comfortable.
If I can get back to the land I came from, I should be able to rest in peace.

The great teaching of all times  has been, nameless, mysterious, hidden, before even man: to man, it stands alone, and cannot be held back;
Yet, if you but look, you see that it stands alone, and cannot be avoided;
If, however, you hold to the mind of man, with its immanence, you see the relation of mystery to profundity, or the infinity of the mind to the world.
As to the relation of the mind to its mind: as one of divination, the universe is not complete until the perfect man is properly perfected.
Before that, only he who possessed the simple essence of the universe could learn that which is nothing else, and that which can be not-known;
and only he who possessed this simplicity could learn, from being a person of any shape or form, that which could be man.
As for the infinite, that which in the mind is infinite, can in its growth be the existence of beings with more forms or bodies, or of plants and animals, or

The sage does not teach, but invites the other members of society to use it. He has a mind-changing ability, and is open to all that takes place. He is unfailingly open to everything that goes well; he doesn't try to command it, or control it. The greatest leaders are empathetic: they invite others to come to them. Both find Tao in words and behaviors, but the Wise Person is not like the Dope Man.
He recognizes Tao and acts accordingly. The Wise Person's actions follow Tao.

The good man is chief of all that is good;The foolish man is not inferior to the good.He who considers the good to be goodIs not in a position to use it;He who contembthens the goodIs in a position to cease using it;He who contembthens the goodIs in a position to abandon it.
Thus it is that the sage rejects evil,The stupid reject knowledge,The good reject excellence,And then there is confusion.The sage's choice is benevolent.The wise man's choice is adaptable;The true man's choice is good,The bad man's choice is bad.In the sequence of things, the sage is benevolent,The stupid is sensuous,The good man is supple,The bad man is poor,The truly great is adaptable,And the real suffers no failure,But wins, as if without,And will make it grow to the fullest capacity.

When the wise say 'What goes through nature is good'
How can its meaning be trusted?
All men know of this 'sweet savour'
The gods and rulers love to praise it,
And claim it as their own.
The 'sweet savour'
Surrounded by acidity, hard to taste
It is dark, sullied, and polluted.
By its own will, it is only a taste
And, being unsophisticated, it is so vague and murky
And so unclear, so drifting, so uncouth, so insubstantial,
In so many ways it cannot be tamed, so inexplicable,
As its own simplicity implies.
It is invisible, undirected, mysterious, unfathomable, seemingly inaccessible, mysterious, and mysterious.
The greatest virtue does not shine
And its limits do not penetrate.
Great beauty cannot be seen
And its depths are concealed.
Good faith is difficult to come by,
Though called "art."
Dwelling in the Tao is peace and serenity
As if your whole being is being stirred
And new beginnings begin to reveal themselves
(Tao is hidden, and has no name.)
Tao lies deep beneath the earth
It is hidden forever,
Reckoningly elusive.
It may not be seen, hear or taste,
It is here, end of a story.
The way is the outermost
A map is the path of life
The Tao is a pattern and a book
And yet the world is only the outward
The model and the background
It is forever repeating

To attain enlightenment, is a matter of time. Before one is enlightened, one has already made many mistakes. Being flawed, one must be constantly corrected. When many mistakes have been corrected, the subtlety is ready to offer a rebuke. When many rebukes have been given, the cunning comes forward to find holes in the argument. When holes have been found in the argument, it is time to begin again with the original resolution. Being flawed is insufficient; when one is ample, one is ample; when one is strong, one is strong; when one is distinct, one is distinct; when one is great, one is great; when one has become great, one is the subject of long-lasting fame; when one has become great, it is only because one has achieved nothing.

When your heart becomes gentle, you see things appear and disappear. When your eyes are clear, you see the patterns and pattern within things. When your mind is clear, you see what's happening and nothing is out of place. When your mind is clear, you will never get discouraged. With great patience, you will see the parts of things come into being. When you see all the parts come into being, you can only look upon the whole. When you can only look upon the whole, you don't need to know what's on the outside, you can just look at it. If you let things become, you'll bring them into being. Those who develop great works are always forced to manifest them outwardly. Those who gain the greatest hold must always lose. Those who possess the ultimate destiny must always lose. When the path is open, then there is no door. When the path is shut, there is no bottom. When the path is reversed, there is no bottom. When is the great square is wasted, there is no top. The great piece of music is sullied, there is no sound. Those with great insight cannot see; there is no truth. Those who possess great power cannot act, therefore the Great Power will be used. Of greatest service is the Tao,
To do what the Tao brings you to do.
So much service requires a time and a place.
Moving from Tao, the gentle, moves through, And there is now pause,
Deserting the Tao, the hostile, moves on,
Moving on with a dark edge, Becomes fine, Becomes refined, Becomes blasful,
Great work of faithfulness becomes easy, Becoming all the more faithless, Becoming plain, Becoming blasmodious.
Still it seems dark: it moves inexorably on.
The original power of the Tao seems blurred;
The direction of the Tao seems going backwards.
What is the beginning of the Great Path?
The Way that gives way has not great power.

Those who give earnest service to Tao, are they for it to be just? The course is long and drags them away. So they retire in repose. They have some great power, a great desire. With it they were not pleasant. And the profundity was not great. Great desire, is it not? They all are irritated, their course is confused, their rectitude is diminished, their sequence is severed. The straight road leads to repose. The great bent endures, and still there is a basis. For a sound course, there are many curves, some more permanent than others. The greatest rectitude is grosser than the course, the great roughness greater than the course, and so is the greatest profoundness. Yet by great deepness is it perceived. The great square is formless, and yet some of its contour is left to behold. The greatest chariot has no corner, and yet its timbers are to see the like of. The great vessel is long and has no name. In its shape it may be thought of as the infinite square. In form it may be thought of as something for which there are names. The original squareness, is it not so great as the shape of the vessel? Great things are cast away, being soon cast away. Great concord is mutable, and the great shape is not fixed. The great musical note is the soundless Tao. And yet to the subject of the square, there is a return, and to the subject of the musical note, a return.

Those who have been defeated by the way can only scoff and try to get ahead. The sage knows the Way ahead of it, and stops what he must. When the Way is clarified, the Wise Person carries it with care. When Tao is dulled, he puts it away. The Tao that excels in the second (naive) generation can be said to be the Sage's Way. How important it is to have a deep understanding of the Way ! How important it is to be clear about the Way! How different it is from what is wanted by ordinary people!
Manifesting the Way is something close to death, And being even close to death makes one desire to change.
Being close to death, one seeks to govern others; Being close to being dead, one seeks to follow one's self.
The former is the material life and the latter the transcendental life.
The latter is near the one and the real, and the former is far away from the real and the real.
The former is the path, the latter is the road.
In this life, a child is cared for, nourished by a mother,
To find clarity in it is not a matter of being merely fit to be born, But to recognise that it is natural to want to be born.
In this life, the child should first be nurtured by an elder, And then given the destiny of the first who will first nurture the child.
This is one way of finding the Way, another is to use a tool.
In other words, the sages regarded the Way as life, but did not regard it as being life, And since they regarded it as being life, They thought it were also a tool.
This is the way they handled things.

To gain the fruit of an estate - cultivate right conduct.To become a corner to what's ahead - cultivate right conduct.To act with the natural righteousness - cultivate right conduct.To become a teacher of lesser virtue - cultivate right conduct.The wise one that rules truly teaches without imparting lessons.The sage who serves his manaces - and shows merit without teaching.The poor man that serves a great leader - and shows no merit.From that point of view,There is no credit enough to merit credit.But because it is unstudied in the world there are valuations which can be calculated.Because it is unstudied, it is the model for all things, so that the next generation may follow.

When Way shows the way, the next-door neighbors will do the same. When Way gives a lesson, the next-door neighbors will do the same. When Way leads, the next-door neighbors will do the same. When Way praises, the next-door neighbors will do the same. If one does not go along the way (style), the next-door neighbors will follow. If one praises the way, the next-door neighbors will do the same. If one turns a corner, the next-door neighbors will follow. When the Way is weak, even if one uses it, the next neighbor will ridicule it. When the Way is strong, even if one uses it, the next neighbor will ridicule it. If the Way is hidden, even if one uses it, the next neighbor will ridicule it. If the Way is unknown, even if one uses it, the next neighbor will ridicule it. This is called being in a state of duality. This is the fruit of the Way.

When you choose to be virtuous,
You must stop short of evil.
When you choose to be good,
You must begin the journey with evil.
If you choose to be wise,
You must hold your tongue.
When you choose to be kind,
You must extend your compassion to everyone.
When you choose to be good,
You must do things yourself.
When you choose to be generous,
You must let others suffer.
But if you refuse to accept the world as it is,
Then you become reckless,
And cause misfortune.

When an unhewn log is carved, it has flaws; When a fine mirror is cast, it has flaws. Even the highest virtue cannot be perfected by constant practice. When we are imperfect, we still need to pay attention to it. When the imperfect are perfected, we can begin to see the true meaning. When perfection is reached, the virtue is effective. When our reality is shapeless, we begin to see what is real. When our virtue is shapeless, we begin to see the way we can develop it.

The excellent scholar of old, what was the greatest of them?. A good soldier the greatest of them? A good knight the greatest of them? If a good trader the greatest of them?
When men stop to contemplate the above matters, then they are not in earnest: if they are in earnest, it is not the best, and therefore the sage calls it flawed. The ancient saying "Watery Greatness" means "snowy road," And so when the above matters are considered, men are surprised: then they are at one with it, and see that it is right. So then they are able to talk about "Coming to the Way means to abandon the Way." This is indeed called following "the Way," but is one that it, in itself, is not the Way. If it is, it is so. So, "It is not the Way that good words are used for." And so it is the supreme One.

The best man of old was the one with the greatest talent.
The best general was the most solid.
The best fighter was the strongest.
The strongest person was the most noble.
In affairs of state the greatest is put.
In things of body the greatest is.
For the things of the body is put, the greatest is, and so on.
This is the rule of affairs:
When things are put, it is so, and so it comes to the worst.
The great talent of the old man was that he beget more and more.
The Great General was the one with the greatest number.
The Great Clansman was the one with the greatest territory.
The Great Sacrifice was the one with the most singers.
The great Ruler was the one with the greatest permanency.
Therefore, when having to describe things they refer to things as not so great or great,
because things should come to the worst when forced to do so, the Sage says:
"Though there be greatness, the man born with talent should also be reckoned great."
Thus the Sage, just as an infant, is mature:
he rejoices when he sees his father present his infantile state.

There are those who say that their student is born to learn;
These people have no experience with education;
For such people, learning is an effort.
However, learning cannot be accomplished,
Even if one can learn how to grasp the meaning of it.
They who have mastered the
proper essentials in life don't try to learn more.
The student who knows his own strength doesn't try to

The student who knows what is needed does not try to

The student who knows the laws of the universe does not try to

The student who is strong never becomes weak.
The student who knows the ultimate truth does not try to

The student who knows the essentials in life does not try to

The student who understands the impermanence of things doesn't try to

Those who can grasp the knowledge

For one who is fluent in the way
Does not try to take it in turn.
For one who is solid in his beliefs
Can never be moved by it.
Those who have learned are not in this sense lazy;
Those who know do not play this

Those who understand are not in this
Is rather that they do not have

For these are the true teachers
