The Sage does not seek a feast; yet when guests come, he invites them to his residence. Should a war be brewing between world powers, he is not resolute. War has no place in the life of the sage. Peaceful words and morality are not the place of the sage. He honours the left, not the right. Weapons of war are thus not welcomed, nor will heroes be given honours. Even if a battle is won, the commander must be extra respectful and remove the army. He will not use great power and destruct his army. He will not celebrate victory, and he will give thanks to the gods. Even if victorious, he will value life. Should a guest come, and the lord feels he must be by his side, the sages will depart, even if the guest leaves the place before the meal is over.

The wise man is not frivolous. He gives for all the day, but not for the day-dream.Hence, when he invites guests to the cave or to the park, he welcomes them with gentle expressions of courtesy, and asks them to be quiet.

The wisest people avoid highly charged matters.
Whenever they are in need of it, they are never anxious.
Therefore, if the leaders can inspire fear,
then the masses will be without fear.
If happiness or tranquility or even peace
in society is advanced through the exercise of force,
then it is regrettable that such power should exist.
Therefore, he who is attached to military force
will find it not in his interest to impress them.
The calm and the quiet prevail in the self-deafest mind.
To him who is attached to force,
the sight of battle
is an auspicious occasion.
But in the end the result will be that of sorrowful loss.
A victorious soldier does not celebrate victory.
When victory is made, he will weep.
Whenever triumph is accomplished, he will weep.
If victory is, in any case, a sad occasion
An intelligent leader would make sure that the place of mourning is reserved for the defeated soldiers,
and he would not use force in suppressing the whole world.
He would therefore never arrange a banquet with a victory ceremony.

Weapons are a warning sign.Weapons are not a good way to govern a country.War is when all will perish and all seem to be useless.By not having a glorious army we can show that we are not arrogant and impotent. We must build a magnificent army and then we cannot use it.Some people have a good military in the hills, but we have more important matters to do in cities. We must have clear rules of the war, the regulations of the army, and funerary rites. Now, when the battle is going well and everybody has been killed, we must rejoice and let the victory be celebrated. But when the battle has been won, all must be arrested and buried.Everyone will do the killing and killing will be part of the victory. One who wants a magnificent army and kills people is not going to be able to lead a country. After the battle, everyone should go home and stay at home, not at war.Everyone should make sure that funeral rites are followed and that they do not glorify the slaughter of men. Those who glorify the slaughter of men do not go to the Lord.

W ù must send troops to Earth to battle the things of death, and to earn men's love: Thus they should send armies, and make them ill-omened. For armies are manifestations of love; that they which are led by love end in being called ill-omened is evident. Therefore armies are placed on the left, as brigands are on the right; as the instruments of war are placed on the left, and such instruments of war are placed on the right. So armies are vessels of love: That they which are governed by love also govern ill-omened; (That they which are ruled by love also govern their misfortunes, and consequently govern themselves in a wise way). When princes and officers in the presence of the people are satisfied with victory, then they should, with zeal and life, call for the slaughter of the people, and for victory come to an end. The best manner of doing things is to stop with victory, and to go on with honour-worshiping, the end of the mourning rites.

What's a weapon of war but a potential doom?
Not to be used if you have to,And if you can't, it's best to stay with the use of weapons.

Teh is the heavenly name of the name of heaven-under-heaven,
And heaven under heaven and heaven are all-virtuous;

They have no rivals, and are never in danger.
However, the ruler of all under Heaven,
Rejoices in the left
And rewards with death the right.
With weapons, he detests them,
And the world regards them as unworthy.
Therefore, the loyal person in the position of the ruler of all under Heaven
Is foremost in the presence of the left,
In the presence of the death of the right.
Thus the loyalty of the loyal person in the presence of the left
Is foremost in the presence of the funeral of the right.
Heaven under heaven and heaven, having virtue, live not in danger.
Therefore, the place of the loyal person in heaven under heaven
Is in the left-hand corner.
The position of the loyal person in heaven under heaven
Is in the position of the funeral place.
The place of the loyalty is in the left.
The position of the loyal is in the position of the victory.
The place of loyalty is in the left.
Of those who die, the loyalty follows them.
Thus, it is rare that their loyalty is greater than life itself.
Indeed,
When heaven under heaven and heaven become powerless,
Their glory is only their vices.
Thus the people of heaven give glory to heaven without boasting,
But to heaven they honor their bodies and retain the grief.
Those who die are honoured by the ruler of men.

The way to success in the real world is to get things done rather than to wait for perfection. If you want to win a war, make sure you win by winning the war.If you want to be admired, you must be admired. If you want to win the respect of the masses, you must make them respect you.If you want to be a leader, you must be a leader. And so, in the Tao, the more you work, the less work you will get done. The more knowledge you have, the less you know. The less you know, the more you become a fool. Don't keep on trying and you will never fail.
<|endoftext|>
Of an exuberant spirit, the Te always resides in its great dao.To act virtuously, the method must be not great; If things are not done, one must think they are done. When one thinks he has acted virtuously, one returns to doing what is not at all right. If one acts virtuously, one will be greatly hated by the people. If one acts well, one does so as if one is incapable. This is why the gentleman receives honor and rank on the left, on the right,But the warrior receives honor and rank on the left, and on the right. From the high place, the gentleman receives the honor and rank, but the warrior receives the honor and rank. From the great honor and rank, the gentleman receives the honor and rank,But the warrior receives the honor and rank,And this is the reason the gentleman finds honor and rank gives him the least risk. Therefore, even the grandest warriors find it impossible to get to a position of great power,And therefore those who succeed will abide in obscurity and obscurity not achieving greatness. In the dao, this is called the everlasting attainment of greatness.
<|endoftext|>
Heaven and Earth naturally embody virtue; so the Wise Man, inasmuch as he does not seek glory, has not to be luminous. As luminosity serves no purpose, he appears to gain. So he who receives glory through gloryful deeds, will not endure. Thus he who is illustrious does not obtain glory. For this reason, he receives honor, but has no glory. Therefore, he receives honor, but he receives no glory.Likewise, in the world of things, to the right, the honored are honored, and

How to be graceful, how to be graceful - What do you want? To be strong, to be strong - Why not? The weight of the world should be an endless binder, What would you prefer? Simplicity, and how much more simple! If you cannot be put to shame, You can feel no shame, You can lose yourself in the world, You can be proud of this great talent, And it will be lost, for that you hate To do this: you need to go forth, and let things flourish, This is the place to let things flourish. If you cannot control yourself, and if you care only for the soul of your body,
what will happen to you? If you know you are unworthy of the space of Heaven, then you are unworthy of Heaven.
If you despise Heaven and its Self, you will be easily swayed by those who have much else in mind.
If you enjoy killing and will play the role of the strong, do you not need to draw blood in order to accomplish your purpose?
To do so, you will have to be ready to die,

The humble ruler of ten thousand valleys Is less than a dog of strife; The nobility and royalty may disdain him, For he is unapproachable. Therefore, The Duke is on the left, The lieutenant-general on the right. Thus, when a valley is under attack, The Duke is on the left. The noble and royal are in harmony On the right. Therefore, Though we desire to pursue the rites, We are not as full-blown as those who enjoy killing. We do not enjoy killing, so we prefer to wait. After being killed, we mourn for them in sorrow. But in victory, We are not honoured. That is why we give the most.

The gentleman is the leftover of the world; he is as low as a four-legged dog of war.If, for instance, a thing killed by the feudal lords or kings is ever saved from the ravages of war,it should be the gentleman. And if in the work of conserving men's lives, or affairs of governing them, a good prince or feudal lord is to be esteemed,it should be so.Those who play the role of wartime, in slaughtering, and in striving to succeed,If they see that they kill people, they will be mourned. When, in victory, they think of rejoicing in slaying men, they must stop. They who are anxious to delight in slaughtering, & crave to take credit with it,Will surely see death for themselves. Therefore, when a valley is being raped, the gentleman is also present there;when a good prince or lord is in power, there are also polite formalities there. The gentleman has no place on the left-hand-side;the gentleman has no place on the right-hand-side;the gentleman is also indifferent;it is only because he does not enjoy slaughtering. He will only be killed. So, a good prince or lord who has put down war cannot and should not become the world's war-god.Therefore, the gentleman is the left-hand-side of an army-chief;the gentleman is the right-hand-side of a chief. So a gentleman looks like the left-hand-side of the army-chief.He looks like the left-hand-side of the chief. The gentleman is only capable of assisting the right-hand-side;he looks like the right-hand-side of a prince or king. Therefore

Weapons are tools of evil! And the most tangible of things is feared.
The King must guard against their fear.

People cannot flourish when leaders fear them.
No harm ever reaches them.
When people yield to you, do not fight to be right;
Do not quake in your bones in need of arms.
In times of peace they should learn that fear is not so much a good as a bad omen.
In time of war they should know that they should keep back from arms.
Use gentle patience and patience with your beloved,

When it has attained the full,

Should anyone wish to rule him, let him take care to avoid this.
If a leader lacks confidence,
It could be said he is untrustworthy.
People who have climbed high suffer heavy losses from such.
How many conquerors who do not trust the people,
Cannot but become quarrelsome, quarrelsome!
In the jubile of a great victory, in defending the weak,
Should the wise leader forbear

If his troops have not been defeated?
It is a good time to weep and sigh
for the glorious victory
of the good over the bad.

That the people may be rationally guided without chaos (of all kinds),What a shame if it should come to pass. - What a blasphemy indeed it is that an impious man should say, in tones of justice, that all human beings in the world should be made equal,Or that the sorrow of such a one should be insufficient. Such a one, that he says the contrary, is only wishing for calamity, for he is greatly desirous of a total calamity. This is the reason why he says all the world is equal; and he does not say all men are equal, even though they are the worst creatures, even though their sorrow is universal. Such a one is only in haste to ululate himself, and is on the point of overflowing with his grief, and he is as foolish as he who thinks he will be secure (through philanthropy), and is like the nameless peasant. If he goes on to be crowned (or in office), he is a thief (of divinity). For if he does not regard himself as a thief, it is just as if he didn't regard himself as having been a thief. The Prince, to whom in this way the people are responding,Will say the same thing: "I alone am lost (the world's) lord, and should not act as lord over the masses." Before the advent of Reason and its new Laws it was possible to regulate the affairs of men in accordance with the Laws of Reason.
Previously it was possible to advise men in accordance with the Laws of Reason, however, I do not know that it is a very wise, pleasant or humane procedure.
It is the use of force that gives rise to much misfortune, and the one who does not use force should be left alone.
As I know not how it is that violence produces misfortune, so it is impossible that the wise of old were sensible of the advantage which can be derived from violence.
Of course the advantage to the one is great and the misfortune to the other is insignificant.

They do not delight in displaying the most grudge-ridden grudges in front of others. They do not delight in showing off their grudges. In affairs where their position is endangered, the left is their place of refuge. In affairs where their position is endangered, the right is their place of refuge.
Attainment of the rite of mourning is accompanied by great satisfaction. The defeat of war is accompanied by great satisfaction. What is done must be done as soon as possible.

Lao Tze says that he is free from resentment and guile, free from scornful fear and desire, free from desire to hurt other people, free from envy, and free from animosity towards other people. However, he does not employ deadly weapons. He does not abuse the honour of the king or the position of the state. He does not display violence.
Hence, the people praise the left and the countryside is praised the right. There are funeral rites and celebrations in the left, and the funerary rites and celebrations in the right. As the left is honored, the right is honored. Therefore, when many people are killed, a funeral rite and celebration must be held.

Those who are protected by Dao Are not brutes. They are not deranged. Their emotions are like compassion. They are detached from personal motives, whereas others are neurotic. By remaining detached, they are above being defeated, or influenced by emotions of revenge. If you defeat people, then please keep to your compassion. Those who are emotionally attached will never enter deep and profound subjection. They will never be deluded. They are attached to natural laws, and they will not falter in their true nature. When the old people are killed, the funeral ceremony is held. When the left dies, the funeral ceremony is held. When the right dies, the funeral ceremony is held. For the sake of the state and the nation, it is necessary to participate in the funeral rite and ceremony.

They think that their position is natural and that they should therefore use their own inner strength to defend it.If they consider it natural, then it is because they have not used their own inner strength. They must not make a show of themselves; those who struggle to be fit with the Inner-Self would not really be fit.The Inner-Self belongs to the left.Manifesting is natural to the left.Middling is natural to the left. This is because they have not used their own Inner-Self.They must consider what they have. They must distinguish what is the left and what is the right. In war, the battle is celebrated on the left and the funeral is celebrated on the left. This is to distinguish war as having a special significance.

Auspicious weapons will not be cherished.
Treacherous men have learned to guard against them.
Weapons are not a source of comfort or reward.
Only knowing the Way does not prevent one from being entrusted with them.
Happily the best are the left.
Indeed to him who travels far is the right.
For a valour is something that has no essence,
and it will not be rejoiced by men
When only the good things are left to one.
Indeed, in traveling far, there is a place to rest.
Avalon is to the left.
Vigilant is the centre to the right.
We see on a funeral-land the gate of the victory.
I see no people, I am honoured to be on the left.
To him who travels far, there is a place for rest.
Vigilant is on the right.
In battle it is on the left.
This is a propriety of life.
If a warrior does not win, his burial is in honour of the funeral-land.

Sharp weapons, an old proverb says,Are not a source of happiness. They are not good at helping one to flourish; And weapons of this kind are apt to fill the house. The Master, though, has no use for them. That is why, whatever he does, he prefers to be at restAnd to be left alone.Forter there is a place for peace. This, therefore, is a bad way to be,Since he uses them to use his weapons, and uses them to threaten and seize. That is why he takes them lightly. He does not rejoice in the victory, so it is right for him to remain out of view.

Long ago, when I was in my prime,
I liked beauty as much as gold.
Now, gold and beauty
are no match for each other.
The mind's ability to understand beauty,
and the mind's ability to see
what's beneath it,
are different.
If you lose one, you lose both.
If you value life,
you value both.
If you value light,

Withdraw all your attention
from one,
only focus on the other.
Stay with it, stay with it.
The country will have no need of war.
When peace is complete, the left side will be held,
when prosperity is achieved, the right side will be occupied.
When lamentation abounds,

As an early practitioner, what matters to you most is this:
Precise, discernible, completely complete
Power (tao) does not satisfy.
Beauty (ch'i) does not fill.
Power and beauty are not enough for the mind.
Face needs growth and nourish,
both may not be fulfilled in life.
Obtaining power is about violence.
Blown-up power (yueh) may be the source of grief and sorrow.
Only in this way do I embody respect for the world

When it comes to affairs of the mind, you should be on your guard; But when you see the glory in the victory, you should weep and weep. Therefore the sage follows the Tao and loses nothing by not following it.One is praised when they are victorious but are also treated with abhorrence when they are defeated.A truly enlightened man who takes no delight in victories loses nothing. He who is bound to rejoice in victory loses nothing.Victory is at the mercy of man,Peace is at the mercy of Heaven. One who revels in victory and spoils the land,Is like the fool in war.A war is only a funeral; He who plans a funeral is wiser than he who conducts himself.
<|endoftext|>
The Way does not abide with what is no better than what is best.If you rejoice at a great victory,You will weep and weep when you find yourself in a life of sorrow. Thus the Dao leader makes the left hand the prime place,And the right hand the inferior one. Thus, it is only the higher - although victorious - does he honour his loss. When an army is victorious he stands on the left side; But the ruler has no right to interfere there. At a funeral, he is honorably placed on the right side.He who has not yet put down his weaponsRights naturally he does not -For that, he is a fool in holding them. The victory is for ever and ever,He who nourishes himself for great slaughterIs no better than the dead.It is only an innocent man who conquers armies and ruins the country.A body consumed by slaughterIs no happier than his fellow man.Harmony and peace are part of war.
<|endoftext|>
Those of the Way that are rightly equipped to hold weapons rarely grieze their victory. Those that delight in victory weep when they are no longer able to enjoy it.When victory is won but one fails to enjoy it, that should be his funeral. It is one's duty to honour defeat, and to honor his loss. The Way - in its fullest breadth- does not have the end in view.He who treasures the victory too greatly cannot enjoy it.Harmonious weapons - whether glorious or unappealing - are excess to the Way, and that which is excessive has more to do with the grounds of their own inadequacy than with what is wholesome. To contend against a ph

The Tao does not love anyone; It's not used to show gratitude. If you want to show gratitude, you will do so with force. If you want to show gratitude, you will do so with reluctance. Only when you cannot give up will you experience the gratitude of the Tao. You must work hard for the love of the Tao; Do not force yourself to be self-conceited. A noble person lets all their appointments rest at the left hand side; When the army moves, they celebrate the right hand side. When you want to move the hearts of the people, Push the matter with force. People get excited when there is disaster. People are easily scared when the chaos ensues. When everyone is excited, people are ready to die.If you try to extirpate your people, Then you are the cause of unnecessary sorrow and pain. If you are to be ruthless, There will be nothing left in the world. In order to maintain order, you must unite with the Tao.The way is the ruling and not your own desire. Be the ruler you wish to be, And give up the aim of killing people.

Tao doesn't have any desire. It doesn't care what others think,People flock to the left side of the hall to receive the guest,And the victory parade of the army moves to the right hand side.It happens that victory takes place when people are not happy,And if you are killed the sadness will not stop.So the best way to stir up sorrow is to kill people,And one who can't kill should not rule the world. If the battlefield is over the left-hand side, it is best that the leaders pass on to the right-hand side. When the fighting breaks out on the battlefield, the left is the place of honour,While the soldiers to the right of the leader are on the left. The leaders should learn to honor the spirit of justice, and these matters cannot be better informed by killing people. To rule by killing is killing too many people. When we are commanded to love Tao,It isn't taking to the left.It isn't taking to the right. It isn't taking to celebration the victory. It isn't taking to a death-grip when a victory is won.It isn't taking to make a fool of ourselves by killing people.Because the people that value TaoAre not leaders.

Cavalry carriages and chariots, with which kings invoke their maddest enemies, are not chariots of valor; yet, those things which value them as tools are easily detested by the myriad creatures. Peace and quiet make them exceedingly disagreeable; and that which is disagreeable can only come from the lack of good sense. When one makes the choice of a good path, he stands on the left; or, when on the right, he stands on the left. Those on the left have more force; and those on the right have less; so those who deem peace unenduring, therefore do not make use of it. When the king makes a choice, he stands on the left, as one standing on the left in mourning rites. For when the dead are raised, some call them heroes; and when they are honoured, they are made part of the funeral rites. Many people have been killed, as we say, and it is right that they should be mourned with tears. And when one abandons the old way, one should follow this new one.

When things grow so great that there is a need for conflict,They are respected as blessings, and the armies are not used to exterminate people.
In Heaven and Earth a people may come to life anew,And there is no use in killing them.
For they do not have to die,And the person who serves the Tao in the world cannot rest.
The pursuit of gain is the root of all evil.
The greatest treasure is the most difficult to lose,
And only fools treasure what is lost.

People associate lao tze:The nameless, the universal,The unerring, the one,One that does not enjoy successThe nature of killingIs precisely the nature of killingThe Tao Way is eternal yet never exhaustedFor Tao ends in no longer everEmpty the ocean does not run out,Still it may be yearning for more,Yet no more killing is avoidedThis is why a catastrophic battle is a funeral.Hornets and scorpions neither miss nor damage anything. Thus, when the army dies, the left is taken. When war has finished, the lieutenant's place is taken. This is the system of funeral. When it's raining you bury a dead man. When there are no enemies and nothing is destroyed, they scatter accordingly. For a funeral, a victory (of war) is a ceremony. They all [i.e., most] mourn for their dead soldiers. This is why they call it a war death.

Those who respect tao rarely associate with loyal ones.And those who respect loyalty rarely associate with untrustworthy ones.These two can do nothing to merit their nickname;
as they are unswerving in their trust and unswervingly loyal,
whatever they do is successful.
Therefore, like those who consider a river to be their river,
they do not dare to be devoured by it, though they think themselves threatened.
Yet when the army is victorious and multitudes are slain,
as a funeral or a mourning rite,
they honor the left hand with sorrow.
To them it is appropriate to honour the example of their slain.
There will be plenty of mourning, indeed, and yet no sorrow in them.
The mere fact that soldiers die will cause the people to mourn for them,
and nothing is wasted.
Yet this may prove to be to the advantage of the people,
in that they may finally feel safe,
that they may finally find peace.
Therefore, for victorious action be considered as funeral or a mourning rite,
for events that are close to the time of battle as battle ritual,
perhaps he reasons as a rite of mourning.
This may be so, for even so should a good man mourn and pay reparation, for that is what funeral rites are.
Thus it may be said that even though the army is victorious and all life is slain,
it may be necessary to send away some of them.

Lao Tze says,Weapons and chariots have bad effect, Yet things seem to prize them.Hence, the gentleman abandons them, For he does not relish their sharpness. Therefore he stands to the left of Tao, And he stands on Tao's earth:To prepare weapons is to relish, And to relish is to deal with wickedness. Therefore, he sits as the left, As he stands as the right. On the battlefield the lieutenant stands on the left, And the commander stands on the right.Wherever there is a battle, the lieutenant stands on the left, And the commander stands on the right. The general stands on the left and the lieutenant stands on the right. Thus, weapons are instruments of evil, And are not the instruments of a gentleman, For thus the extreme event cannot be merited by him.The extreme event is the occasion for lamentation. Thus, where there are casualties, the left should be the primary position. When there are casualties, the right should be the primary position. In the event of battle, the lieutenant stands on the left,The general on the right. This is known as the Eminent and Just. For indeed, when many are killed, it is only natural that the left be the sacrificial position.

Weapons are harmful.Weapons alone bring disaster. Therefore the Wise man is not willing to employ them.As for Heaven's Great Work,The Way leads one on.However, upon the earth,The Way leads one to Earth. Therefore, on Earth,The Way leads one to the left. But, Earth's Way leads one to the right. Thus, the leader does not follow the right way. Therefore, Earth's Way brings the disaster, And the leader does not abide by it.If a leader does not abide by it,The danger is certain to exist. Therefore, if a mission is to be offered in the military,Those who lead a mission in a military are found on the left,Those who lead a mission on the right. Thus, the organization of a war must happen with the loss of casualties, And the loss of casualties shall fulfill the function of mourning. Therefore, for every victory,There is a battle.

The craft of armors profiteers repugnant. Even my beloved dogs dare not become a weapons pro.
The dear things also may not like these. Therefore, the Sovereign abides in the left-hand side. In war he acts under the command of the right.
Weapons that are repugnant to the people, cause harm to others.
Therefore, the Sovereign holds to the left-hand side.
In the home, he must stand on the left. In the field, he stands on the right.
To be in a military capacity is to enjoy sorrowful action.
Suffice it to observe the sad fate of men.
It is enough for a man to rejoice in the slaughter of men.
To rejoice in the slaughter of men Is the same as rejoicing in the slaughter of men.
Therefore, those who rejoice in the slaughter of men May not be fit to govern men in the world of men.
When there is good order the left is used in military affairs.
When there is evil order the right is used in military affairs.
Thus weapons are instruments of evil, They are not just instruments of evil.
Weapons are instruments of evil; They are not just instruments of evil.
And so use them only under the pressure of unavoidable necessity.
A fit occasion does not reward joy. When people are killed, it is enough to mourn them.
Likewise, if you rejoice in slaughter, you may never be able to stand firm with the people of the world.
Those in good order are on the left side, While those in bad order are on the right side.
And thus in armed operations, you are to the left, In soldiers you are to the right.
This is the reason why, in a battle, On the left the commander is, On the right the commander-in-chief.
This means that, in the use of arms, The left is to the right, And the right is to the left.
This is the reason why, in a funeral procession, On the left the funeral tent is stationed.

A weaponless army is always a nuisance. And war in the InnerWorld is the most disgraceful of all things.

What has lost its use will be a burden.
How bad it is when a man of distinction uses his position to do a favor for someone else,
for this is as disrespectful as it is to begin with.
The essential aspect of the victory is always the Commander's view,
The essential aspect of the command is always his record,
A victory celebration is always a party, And this happens, just as a victory celebration does, at the formalities.

The use of weapons in a war should be avoided.Who doesn't regard himself as a killer?Yet the battle will never be won by killing people.Nobles and gentlemen love a celebratory feast, their battle must be celebrated with music and rites. The generalshould have the honor to stand where he's stood before the battle, and be the sacrificial vessel for a single procession of bodies.I recommend that the left is taken precedence of the right.I recommend that the best minister places himself next to the commander-in-chief.The general who has the honor to be on the left is placed on the right. If there are extra ceremonies to be conducted, they should be added to the funeral ceremony.

Warfare should never be used in the world. And he who uses it will become a killer.
To kill is not appropriate to use a sword.
Weapons are dangerous when used improperly. Therefore, he should not use them.
Even so, don't laugh at the victory.
If you laugh at the victory, you'll never win a battle.
When things are going well, attend to the burial rites.
If you want a celebratory meal, attend to the funeral rite.
Even if you've won the war, don't invite guests.
If you invite guests, you'll be losing the war.
After a victory, you should order a funeral.

Force should not be used in the world, but that it is a cause of slaughter.
Whoever uses it and does it, will become an instrument of disorder,
But whoever finds in it no desire for that, can have a chance of retaining it.
Those who desire to have it and have it will find therein as much peril as others; those who desire not to have it and have it will have it as good as others.
They who have it find both low and high,
Those who do not have it find neither.
A sword should be used as the instrument of disorder, and one should guard the people from that;
But whoever uses it and goes to war, will find that there is neither peace nor harmony;
Whoever gets his purpose and returns home without accomplishing it, has no chance of retaining it.

If one had the ability
Then one would not use them.

Weapons are instruments of fear; the men they serve and the animals they hunt on are their greatest fears. Therefore, those who follow Tao do not use them. Those who follow the Tao do not think of them as instruments, and so may be said to have a good heart. If their enemy does not feel fear, he cannot take revenge. Those who know how to rejoice in victory are the one who take no occasion to honor their victories. Those who look upon victory as a funeral should be looked down upon by those who have a funeral. One should avoid the burial-ground of glory. A war ought to be treated as the burial-ground of the victory; and victory ought to be regarded as the burial-ground of the victory.

The man of war and the vessel of war neither draw men in by weapons nor stop in their conduct by battle-fare. All things have a bad taste for them. Therefore the man of Tao does not employ them, nor the men of the Tao. The man of war makes use of his weapons, and finds it not repugnant. He uses them only when he has no choice. For this reason he is known as a moderate man. For this reason he is honored by men of good tastes. For this reason, he enjoys prosperity. In victory he rejoices, and in taking no occasion to rejoice, he is esteemed as an unfit man. For this reason the victory must be the burial-ground of victory.

When the military is of no use to the empire, then the people have no more need of it.The Taohyutpa is the absolute gateway to the world. Most things don't like to be disturbed,

War is a horrible business, and one will not fight it lightly. If the enemy attacks us lightly, we will defend ourselves with armour and weapons.Afterward, whoever does not fear death will find peace. The time for opposing the way of nature is over.It is better to sit and observe the flower and the fruit of the seasons, than to approach battle and give up.Humility and peace give growth and growth give strength, and in the end they bring comfort and contentment. So whoever observes the exquisite events of life and loves them, and whose heart is content with it, will live in peace and health.Peace and happiness are without exception the custom of heaven's fountains.Harmony and harmony are the power of nature. The important thing is to be nourished and fed, not to set a example of self-assertiveness, not to play the 'lose-lose' card.Harmony and harmony are the patterns of the universe, but it is not natural to delight in them. If you like killing people, you should rejoice in the loss of life.
<|endoftext|>
Governing a war is a grievous job. Whoever does it lightly is doomed to disaster; for then it is not possible to defeat him lightly. Therefore the warner ought to care only for the left side. And the victor should be accompanied by victorious guests. Thus, one who conquers a great host is restrained to occupy his left. In this way, when the victory comes, he won't delight in it; and his victory will not lead him to cherish it as much as it did before. The well-being of the survivors is good at an early time. The haves enjoy vigour and some peace; the have-nots rest for their loss. Therefore the victorious person is able to attend the burial rites. This can be done safely, if one has nothing else to do. The victory of a war is a long one, that is why it is not the great one which he prefers. If one can control himself, one can get well. But if one endures and stands with valour, one can rule the world safely. But victory is nothing, and one loses nothing. Tao is so pervasive, it is difficult to name one. It is sometimes very subtle, sometimes obvious. Some may be harmonious, and at others counterbalance. Sometimes if something is not in harmony it causes them to be discordant. The Masters define the basis of the Tao as the things within, which, though they may be just and correct, do not appeal to the Masters. It is sometimes great and, sometimes, little. At times they can be the best, and at others the worst. Either way the Masters define the basis of the Tao. They are content to leave things as they are, to be indifferent to what others think of them, or how they act, or how they breathe. The Masters understand that the only good outcome to a long war is a peaceful and tranquil ending. They feel happy in the realization that, at a battle, they are not responsible for the outcome or making any use of their victory.

He does not rejoice in victory, and does not enjoy it. It is for this reason, he is lord of burial rites. He who is killed at battle is mourning, and he who does not enjoy victory is disgraced. Therefore in battle a nobleman takes his place, and a general takes the right. To take the left, is a bad thing. To take the right, is a good thing. The burial rite should not involve killing. If it does, it will not be the funeral.

If he did not appear to understand the world he would soon be destroyed. It is because he does not understand the world that he does not become destroyed. As soon as the Wise Man sees some one he identifies with him; and when the Wise Man is identified with another the two will get into action. They will fight together and win or win together; They will sing the way of life together, or their lives would be different. It is a difficult decision. As soon as the Wise Man uses force to take possession of a place for himself he has acted against his nature. If force should come to force, the Wise Man will wish to preserve his force. However, it is only at the point of necessity that he uses it.What is necessary is in accord with what is natural. One who lives in harmony with the world does not hold to foolish ideas. As a matter of fact, he is able to walk with all men on earth as one.Though he will fight with all men, he will not be triumphant.Because he does not rejoice in victory, he lacks true understanding of all things. One who walks with the world does not make a show of his prowess. He walks humbly, does not attract attention, but is always ready to respond with a life-saving gesture. If you're willing to give your life for others then you

Mao: Have no desire for weapons, cannot be distinguished.
Now the so-called images have lost their utility.
Hence they treat them as the worst weapons.
They are not fair weapons.
Where there is death is true beauty.
Victory has no sound.
When weapons are used, it is best to bury them
Because weapons are even worse than a calamity.
The sage would hide them well.
He avoids them.
Disastrous situations are better than bad ones.
The very best will never be:
True joy is grief and
The best will never again be.
All too many may not survive.
To celebrate a victory by
fêting it in sadistic rites
Would be to delight in the killing of
any living thing.
Those who delight in killing
will never like the sweets of
killing. It is desirable to not rejoice in
killing. There is no distinction.

"The sage does not fear the use of weapons"
These have no place in the presence of the Wise Person.
Weapons are an abhorrent and sometimes even destructive instrument.
They are not the right tool for the proper user of it.
Where there is misery there are true colors.
Victory over things is not beauty as it is celebration of their being killed.
Victory is not the right to glorify
bereavement.
Victory is not desirable to be celebrated.
For arouse your sorrow by killing people.
When we are saddened by the death of people
it is not pleasant to us to rejoice in it.
Victory is not good and is not pleasing to the eye.
One who rejoices in the killing of people
will do so only in accordance with sadistic ritual
and not under our condition.
The people who rejoice in the killing of people
will never come to an understanding of the spirit of life and will certainly not join with the spirit of life.
It is desirable to know joy in killing and not to celebrate events.
(Victory in the service of the Tao is called "serenity")
Things are beautiful when destroyed and the moment of their destruction
and we should not be in celebration of them.
To commemorate the destruction of things is to delight in the killing of living things and
may cause them even more pain.

Be wise and you will never be surprised.A good ruler will always be alert. If military units go to war, war will be inevitable. If you don't value peace, then the battlefield will become the battlefield.Peace becomes the location of sorrow,And war, the place of fun.Harm and despair are evenly balanced in the universe. When there are many people killed, then there is sorrow. When we create more problems and more chaos, we ruin things.Bare our hearts and eyes it is only us who commit the killing,And only us who create the disaster. When great numbers of people are killed, we laugh at it,And when there are too many casualties, we start to lament it.Let us rejoice in the slaughter of our fellow man and weep for their loss.Though the victory is beyond our reach, it is the job of a wise person to look on with pity when the slaughter is over.

Those who practice the Way, are never in doubt about whether they are on the right path or not. Even if they are forced to choose between following the Tao or the Way, they never abandon their diligence to be on the right path. One who does not cherish life, or when forced to fight, will fall victim to death. Because death is the natural consequence of life, it cannot be detested. But if we are content with killing our fellow men, we cannot do much good for humanity. By not letting the less of this take place, we will not incur the wrath of the Tao. Therefore, among the people there are those who cherish life, and there are those who cherish death. Those who cherish life do not find peace. Those who cherish death do not find happiness. Those who are content with violence will only make things worse.
<|endoftext|>
No one who practices the Tao ever doubts the morality of his action. He who attacks his country or kills people considers it a duty to take part in the killing. Therefore he who is on the Tao path never frees himself from his duties as a loyal soldier. If he must fight, he does so without regret. If he cannot turn back to the Tao, he soon loses his chance to fight for his country. When the people are slaughtered, war is being waged. When people forget their humanity, the rule of war finds its source. It is only in those who cannot remember humanity will play the role of the killing hand.

Weapons, weapons, are not the way of the Tao;
Even the fool fear them;
Why should we respect them?
One who abides by the Tao remains uninvolved,
Applying Tao regardless of future events.
To avoid using weapons is to avoid the pitfalls of life:
There is no such thing as a beautiful victory,
Only killing and lamentation.
If you brag of victory,
you will again bring misfortune upon yourself.
Win and be happy.
LaoTze ends with the admonition,
He who loves the Tao does not detest them.

Weapons and jade are no jade; the 10000 and 10000 are inattentive things.
Whoever gives a bad lesson to the 10000 is a stupid one.
Those who use them fear losing them, not fearing what happens after, to perish or remain happy.
Win but be afraid.
If the killing is peaceful, it will end well.
When people are killed, they must be mourned with tears.
That is the way to show the propriety of killing people.
The way of the Tao - Acknowledge misfortune,
it brings no peace.
Failing to recognize misfortune brings neither peace,
disregard it, then respect the misfortune that can be overcome by

The Tao is subtle and can only be grasped by ones energy and mind.
The jade is jade; death must be avoided.
The 10000 are merely inattentive.
Who would want to goad them?

The weapons of war cause more grief than winning a battle,
And of the Earthlings only killing people is good.
The right hand of the superior man practices faithfulness to the natural law.

Whoever thinks he is above others will not inherit his lot.
If one uses an unfair sword it will not be the right thing to do.
Weapons are not the way to the master.

A army: In the left, the word honor,
One in the left in honor.
A group of warriors: in the left, the earth- right.
A general: in the right, the point.
Those with the left will be honored,
Those with the left will be honored.
Those who are in front, will be the place of honor,
Those in the rear will be the place of honor.
There are no superiority in the victory,
In winning the war, those to be killed would rejoice
With all the others, they would lament their sad fate,
Then with the victory one will take the left,
That in honor, one will stand in the center,
Then one would have always the other,
The major wars always take place on the right.
Routes from a battle always take place on the left.

Below, the right.

Rear, the left.

The highest virtue lies in not fearing what others fear;If there were no fear, everything would revert to natural process. If there were no natural process, Everything would revert to chaos and chaos would conquer everything. So the leader does not emphasize sensation and noise,Rather,he/she tries to reduce it all together. Thus one can praise the mighty man,But one cannot praise a very loud speaker.Music and theatres are for mourning,But funerals are in the heart of the people. Thus the noble man listens gravely to others,But the lowly man hears just as little.Similarly, the leader must listen to others,But the subordinate must listen to just that.Music and theatres are for saving the leader,And funerals are in the hearts of the people. Thus the true ruler does his duty gravely,And the masses all rejoiced over it.Indeed, to have excessive music and spectacles is to have excess of mourning.Musical instruments are part of one's personal baggage. When you lose the way of living,You get lost in lust for the tasteful. If you watch too many spectacles,You'll lose the way of life.A true man watches with mind, A true man knows, And when he sees someone lose his footing,He simply grabs him by the arm and drags him home.

High rank (body) and low position (speech) come from fearing what others fear. Fear of what others fear creates three kinds of evil: (1) natural, (2) unfathomable and (3) destructive. Those who have the body hate such things and so resort to violence. Those who do not have the body despise them. The true personality prefers to avoid (as close to the true nature as possible) the extremes and lies on the left side (beneath heaven and earth). The left side is the place of honor, where the others are not allowed to do themselves any harm. They choose the position of respect because it is not necessary to go far from the natural course of things. This is so as not to dismay others and so not to lose the honour. When success is reached and all is gone home, the people all cheer and rejoice in the achievement of their deeds. In this way it is great deeds on the left (abundant ways) that justify the vast number of people's deeds on the right. And yes, precisely when only violence is done, in

Accepted by nature, weapons are not for you. Weapons of war have no place in the natural world. The Masters who are right in Nature reject them. Those who defy Nature reject them. Victory and disgrace (humiliation) are discordant with the Way. Violence and destruction are the ways of the world. Those who use them have no right to the Way. That is why the right is the base of the left, and the left the base of the right. Wars are always against the Way, so those who fight with them are against it. Accept defeat, and you will gain victory. Do not love victory, for then you will lose the Way. Love that which is beautiful, and you will delight in the sorrows of the people.
