He is absent of respect, (which leads people to look on him as a step-child).
Without a need to live, he is undisturbed,
without a care for his appearance, his name is above all things.
Those who know the way of this world are their successors.
He is the model of their successors.

Take great height,
And find it brings you down.
Bring in power,
And it's depth loses.
Get everything you want,
And it's emptiness comes.
Empty yourself,
And you will be renewed.
Superior men know,
If they don't blab,
That the glory of a leader lies in her unpretentiousness.
She shines, but does not take credit.
She demonstrates, but takes no credit.
She serves, but does not claim ownership.
Those without shame take glory for their own.
Who knows shame to be shocking?
Strip-minded, and you invite the hunt.
But cleverness and justice, like the glare,
Are only what should be found.
Here's a simple rule for you:
Only show honor when you really mean it.
Never fuss over what you don't have,
Or waste time figuring out who should and who should not.
<|endoftext|>
Broaden your bow And let it bring you down. Bring out power, And the bow will be straight. Obtain everything you desire, And the right bow will be produced. Empty yourself, And you will be renewed. Superior men know this, They do not strut. They do not show themselves. They do not boast. They make them. They enrich them. They return them. They possess them. Therefore the sage shows honor to the follower. She excels to the follower. She excels in the person of the follower. Superior teaching is not flashy. It does not brag. It does not boast. It is an exercise of wisdom, Reason that is wise. Whoever discards honor Will never lose it. Whoever discards achievement Will never lose it. Whoever discards the teacher Will never lose it. If they are not deficient, They are not deficient. To cleverness and competence, The truth is the plain truth.

So those who go smoothly are followed by those who are unsteady, those who roll up their sleeves are bound to receive blows. Those who are old have a good life, those who are tired will not tire. Thus the sage uses the character of the Simple Man. He builds the walls of heaven, he builds the foundations of the earth. He never turns back from the Way that he never loses his way.

The wise man does not flaunt himself. He does not show off. He has no sense of self. He is not arrogant. He expects nothing from others. He expects that no one is better off than he is. So one who does not shine, one who lays off one's burdens, one who perseveres, one who is resolute, one who knows himself, one who is decisive, one who knows the Tao (the Laws of Nature), one who rolls up his sleeves to attack the foe, one who is steady on the right side of the wall of the house, one who rolls up his sleeves and will be beaten back by the wall, he is complete and a good leader.

On one whose heart is no stir
And whose functions are performed without effort
the others will not master
Nor can he be set right.
The Sage has his functionality
And achieves his aims
And yet does not display himself.
He acts without issue, and therefore is unimpaired.
A man of broad knowledge will pay great attention to few words.
He advances in his effort without acting with any initiative.
But he who knows himself will not try to convince others that he is right.
That he is right he will impress upon him every occasion.
He advances without a sacrifice and still remains unmolested.
<|endoftext|>

If your heart does not
Do your job well
Your head lacks gravity
Your speech lacks substance
When you feel powerless
A man with deep knowledge
Is open to knowledge and will not hide it
He works without expectation
He rolls up his sleeves
He abides by no one
No man rolls up his sleeves
Nor does he abide by his oath.
<|endoftext|>
Of course the good scholar never displays himself
The good speaker never displays his substance
The good music never conveys his sound
The good book never will arouse interest
To the wise, the universe works all by itself
If you try

For him, things without cause will not be spoken of, things having causes will not be named. As for thick ropes the longest may be tied, for the one with integrity does not display his accomplishments. The lowest may be climbed, for the one without faithfulness will not endure. The parts that are cast into rust are made new, for he who does not use them in vain has abundance of good.
By this reason the Wise Man adheres to those virtues which are meritorious, the multitude which increases, but the Meritless One (his beloved) himself is exemplary. He follows the path of enlightenment, and rejects the frivolity of action.
<|endoftext|>
The great, old, and new are merely images of the same old. The great, old and new can't be seen because they're not visible. Thin and broad, it's perfect for a terrace; Worn and unfitted, it's perfect for a guest. Empty and old, it's perfect for a country. Long and narrow, it's perfect for a house. And its usefulness being needed, it's perfect for a good time. Simplicity is the best, and everyone follows it. The old and new can be seen but not taken note of. The perfect, old, and new are bright, but the perfect is not bright. The thick is strong, but the thin is weak. When you need more you can use more. The Wise Person holds on to simplicity and doesn't dwell on things that differ. He's just following the soft touch of the Spirit.
<|endoftext|>
The great ancient ancients were completely different from now. The vast ancient ancients lack the practice. Why? Because they cannot practice. Try walking in a straight line, and you will see where you do not want to go. The ancient ancients went to great extremes to make their terraces perfect, and so can do. Widest, the greatest reaches no farther than you can put a finger on. The longest stretches no further than you can see the edge of the knife. So the ancients knew that what they loved best was not the use for art and craft, but its perfect and lasting usefulness.
<|endoftext|>
Everlasting (vao) is like the ancient virtue (su yang), honored and known. Everlasting is the perfect (pu). Its utility (chih) is a mystery. Indeed, it is ever long

So with the noblest man, (the ideal man), he shines, because he does not give himself the glory. He imposes himself, because he does not wish to prevail. If you look for merit in him, you will see it not. He accumulates, and because he does not display himself, he returns to silence.
And the true ruler is not the power of the ancient rulers.
His virtue flows out of the Tao, to the end of time.

From him who is a conqueror, all run spontaneously as well.
From him who discards belongings, all run spontaneously as well.
Those who come and go are likewise natural. Those who do not talk are natural also.
When the world is soft and parched, then there is peace.
When the world is full of differences, then there is harmony.
And when men are so stupid as to think that they know everything, then the Dao will take their place.
<|endoftext|>
What is the cause of being undone?
The cause of being undone is without desire.
Therefore, it happens that one who is in the state of ignorance, when he has no wish to be removed, does not accomplish his work.
When one is in the state of earnest desire, he goes to extremes.
When one is in the state of fullness, he becomes empty. When one is in the state of distress, he loses the cause of existence. When the causes of existence are lost,
There is an expansion of what is bright and improved.
There is an expansion of what is smooth and durable.
There is an expansion of what is great and powerful.
When people become afraid of themselves, then there will be a contraction of the world.
<|endoftext|>
Who is the cause of going astray?
Who is the cause of going astray is without desire.
It follows that one who is always going astray does not have good things done.
One who is always going astray, is not bright in him.
One who is always bright, loses his brightness.
One who is always empty, loses his home.
One who is always restless, loses his energy.
When men are afraid of themselves, then they are no longer able to control the world.
<|endoftext|>
One causes desire in others;
One causes desire in one's own self.
These are separate things.
<|endoftext|>
As there is desire to cause separation (of the Self),
as there is want of self-mastery (like "yea" and "nay")
Those who are separated, by their own desires,
perish and disappear from the view of the world.
Because they only have desires, they cannot accomplish.
Because they have no desire,

======================================== SAMPLE 6 ========================================
He who is not perfect becomes imperfect. He who is bound by virtue is unvirtuous. He who stretches himself out to conquer in the pursuit of his desires, causes ignominy. He who dwells on private matters, grasps on the state.
The sage is the vehicle of all things.
He who abides by Tao but does not expect earthly profits is the model for mankind.
He who becomes self-sufficient but does not demand a surplus becomes an object of desire.
He who is self-sufficient, but does not make any demands becomes dependent.
He who is insufficient, but makes no demands, becomes helpless.
Therefore the great leader, who does not display himself, is the subject of admiration, and, consequently, the most praiseworthy.
The tao that is constantly being fulfilled makes one tolerant, and the aim of desires makes one content.
The part that is always being fulfilled makes one liable to mind-blowing events, and the pursuit of desires makes one materialized.

"When the spirit in the earth is perfect, the male is mated to the female."
In ancient times:
He who could stand on his own two feet was considered to be superior to those who were used to stand on a cart,
and if they were forced to stand on the cart they would stumble.
When the spirit is perfect, a bow will be straight, so with a straight bow,
the spirit is upright.
He who can hold his back and his body together, is at the same time right with his spirit.
He who is angry and has no more than you can spare will be repressed.
All is completed when the spirit in the earth is perfected.
When the spirit is perfect, then the bent is straightened, and the empties are filled,
and with age, it blunts its edge.
He who is bowed down in his mind is dull and obsequious.
He who is learned and satisfied in his thoughts has no ingenuity.
When he lays hold of what is aught he gets no more than what he expects.
"The spirit in the earth has developed the power to empty itself but still hasn't mastered it yet, it has the power to straighten itself but still hasn't mastered it, it has the power to fill itself but still hasn't mastered it, it has the power to wear away, yet it never uses it at all, so when

And towards him who is incomplete, (who takes nothing to himself), all appear to be inadequate.
Hence the Sage, (the Principle of the Empire), holds the Perfect to be the model of the Essential, (for the Essential being of the Sage is all-embracing, without self-assertion).
In this manner the (Ego), who has the Principle of the Empire, has (the principle) which is the ultimate Reason of the Complete Essential.
And likewise the best person may be the model of the average person.
And the average person, in turn, may be the example of the best person.
And (in so doing) a little cleverness leads to success.
Yet the cleverness of the greatest person is not thereby successful.
Thus the following (text) is saying what I have always longed to say:
Take no extremes; turn back a corner. Remain indifferent and keep true;
One finds no fault, because your errors are the best evidence for finding no fault.
'Tis the goal of the greatest activity to try not to dare;
Not seeking to show off one's great achievement, one will be seen as a fool by others.
<|endoftext|>
Sage men, then, were virtuous; thus they were virtuous; and thus they became virtuous: As for those who were not virtuous, they were nonetheless virtuous; Thus they became virtuous: And thus they became virtuous, And thus they became also virtuous: And thus they became also virtuous; Thus they were also also virtuous; And thus they were also equally virtuous; And so they were equally virtuous; And so they were equally virtuous. As for the sage, she alone, like the whole world, is seen to be virtuous. And so she has an original virtue.
Thus, the earliest teaching that can be named comes directly from the earliest beginnings, which were imperfect.
Not being an extreme, is therefore an extreme.
Being indifferent, is therefore indifferent.
Being true, is therefore true.
Being empty, is therefore filled.
Forgetting, is therefore renewed.
Not showing off, is therefore evident.
Not giving himself a title, is therefore illustrious.
Nameless, therefore he finds merit.
Acting by nature, he does not claim personal honour.
Being one with the Dao, one is not adapted to personal honour.
This is why a subtlety is always in accordance with the essence.
Therefore
======================================== SAMPLE 8 ========================================
Can it be that those who are most perfect are the least guarded?
Is it not as though those who have made themselves the most perfect do not dwell in themselves?
Hard to deal with, they would be incapable of keeping it;
and surely the less to say,
The less to do, the easier.
<|endoftext|>
Empty the mind of understanding, all affairs will be ordered. Embrace the Unyielding, you will work. Extended, still, you will be kept. Proved to be the Proper Shape, you will be the Leader. Speedily complete, you will not go back.
Keep yourselves free from the limelight, but be in balance with your surroundings.
The world will not long need you.
Continuing the Tao, we see how the creation of the universe came about.
Without limitations, the formality of the world leads to infinite growth, the endless growth results from the natural growth, the natural growth still, by the practice of the Tao, to increase in time, and that which does not go beyond will be replaced by nothing.
What is not an end in itself, how is it possible that it be used?
Can it be that without action, we achieve all that we want?
For he who does not lean on the things he holds fast to
Will be steady enough to lean on the ones he renters.
Therefore, the useful and unprofitable, being one, appear less useful.
The having too many is the beginning of failure.
Lacking wherewithal is always hidden, one need not strive for success;
Therefore, take what is wanting and do not contend.
He who gives without consent, has no part in the world.
In his natural development, he finds his potential.

Put away the wisdom of Reason and there will be more and more. No longer see things as they are, and things change. Better not to notice what is there. Better not to grasp at what is worth holding onto. When you have the knowledge, you can then justify the actions, and claim that the point is just. The more empty the mind is, the more easily the others get hold of it. So the greater the knowledge, the more powerful, so the weaker. Better yet, the weaker things turn to the master. What a fool he was, when he took the mediocre and advanced the common folk. Do not seek to hold on to wisdom

In him all things move, and have neither stopped nor intervened. When he is in no hurry to claim the praise of others, he will not attract the censure of men.He does not abuse his person or let any other person take his place.
He does not find fault with himself or with his work. He does not style himself superior to anyone, and he does not act without feeling that he is superior.
He does not compete with anyone for praise or credit, because he does not like to waste it.
He stands by his word, and is not likely to change it.

When the leaders of the world were made wise in the wise old ones realized the true virtue in their own merits.
They know how to turn a shadow into a luminous image.
They know how to make a left-handed turn into an straight.
They know how to empty the cavity in their belly and give their energy to strengthening the soft elastic lines of the abdomen.
They know how to let the kingly wisdom end and thus for the whole the world will then cease.
When the kings and lords of the world look at the reformed wise old ones and it seems clear to them what they truly have to do the reformed wise old ones [of old] feel that they know how to act and that their merit, their virtues, their policies can be of service to the world.
When wise leaders of old achieved this transformation of the shadow into the image and made of it a light they saw that their true merit existed within.
When the wise ones of old made of it a light the awareness of their merit and strength and the sincerity of their intentions became something else they saw that their ordinary affairs could no longer be of concern.
They acted with the consciousness of the knowledge of what it is they are doing and the desire to do it with full knowledge of the merits and need for what they had done.
When the wise kings and lords perceived the transformation of a shadow into a light they also saw something light in their heart.
They too could act in accordance with the light in their hearts.
When the old wise ones took their seats in the sovereign seats they found that even the shrunken kernel of wisdom did have power.
They became clear in their hearts; enlightened in their souls; perfect in their work;
They became things to be looked after; they were the aim of the spirit of princes and kings.
They became light in their hearts; white

To him who rejects merit, (who declines to boast of his merit), all go astray.
The Way of the past existed for the good people only. So, the good people are the models for the empire. So, the emperor does not distinguish between the Good Person and the Wicked. He accepts the Good Person. The Wicked Person, if he still finds himself in a mischievous mood, he tries to reject him. He, on the other hand, does not become aware of his character as a man, and is always treated with tolerance.
The Way of the present is a guide to the poor person, for it is the same with the ruler. When good people have equal chance to succeed, the opportunity for bad people to fail will be lessened. The people of old (who owned the Tao) were All-Appropriately guided. To the princely ruler, this is a lesson in wisdom. The common people do not subscribe to this. The wise ruler holds to his own interest. That is why the princely ruler has no prejudice toward the common people.

Things are coming and going; therefore they may be regarded as temporary
A point can be smoothed out, an edge worn;
But nothing lasts; thus they can be styled ill-working,
As if they were bent.
With no desire, they cannot be bent.
Work is impossible to be done.
Work can only be the result of desire.
When your desires are empty, how will you control them?
When you are capable of losing what you possess,
the empty place will gradually fill up.
To show off is not enough to fill the empty place;
To be willing to lose is not enough to preserve what you possess.
The Way of old holds the self to the self;
Therefore the self is the way to the world.
The leader who holds to self-knowledge may be called the ruler of the world.
Of the world, the leader possesses the distinction of being master over the common people.
The common people do not possess the distinction of being master over the ruler.
The world has not had a ruler who has behaved in this manner.
Those who act with no choice
Are like those who act with a choice.
He who acts, just because he does not know
Is not objective; he is indeed free of acting as if he knew;
He does not act because he feels it is right;

Thy Way does not upset thy way, like the Thread of the universe. So long as it lasts, it is ever useful. But when it fails, it is fashioned anew; So put away! And behold! it becomes clear; Obeget! It becomes empty; Abide! In abasement, one sees all things again; One who has been spent, is again made whole; One who is set on increasing, is fulfilled; One who is showy, is divined; One who has no ambitions, is honoured; One who does not strive, is great; One who does not contend, is victorious. For this reason the wise leader is constant. He does not display his mind,And makes it available to others; He does not boast of his accomplishments,And leads them to glory. And he is not arrogant,And therefore he is in the mind of all things. And to the one who does not want to become conspicuous,He shines; To the one who has nothing to do,He becomes content; And to the one who struggles,He becomes victorious.Because he does not take action,All things prosper.

If you want to gain the hundred, you must have ten thousand things. Therefore, if you want to gain the hundred things, you must have ten thousand things that were not yet seen.So how should we think of tao? When you have started to understand something, you stop. When you have spoken a great deal, you retire. When you have spoken a lot, you say nothing. When you are well satisfied, you know when to stop. When you are knowing, you are not self-conscious.When you are self-conscious, you are out of touch. When you are not self-conscious, you have the potential to help the world. The Tao is eternal and ever-available.

To gain a hundred things you must have ten thousand things. We can describe it like this:A good man and a good womanAnd a good house and a good house must make use of the ten thousand things.A poor man and a bad manAnd a bad home must use a hundred things of these things. When all the things in the world want to obtain the ten thousand things they must employ the hundred things and then they must desire nothing. This means that they gain them but have not yet recognized their value. It is because they have not yet recognized their value that they achieve what they have achieved. And therefore it is because they have not yet recognized their value, they accomplish the whole world's good. The Tao is constant and still in action.

He who has a good body, is free from heart trouble. He who has a good head, is free from bad danger. He who has a good heart, is free from sorrow. He who has a good knowledge, is free from doubtfulness. He who has a good mind, is free from illusion. This is why all beings can be benefited. Since they do not compete with each other, they are all then able to benefit one another. The Sage, therefore, does not compete with others;
He is the foremost among men. Because he is not arrogant, he is exalted;
Because he is not proud, he is illustrious. Because he does not glory, he is successful. Because he does not hold excessive desires, he is fortunate. He is not intent on dominating others, He is the king of the ten thousand things.
Therefore, the words "the good body" are not an empty word; They are preserved to make one, free from heart trouble and free from disease. Inasmuch as his life is long, he is fit to become a king.Inasmuch as his body is free from want, He is fit to be the follower of God.Inasmuch as his intellect is high, He is free from error.Inasmuch as he is not puffed up, He is free from suffering.

When dealing with emptiness the Tao should be the guide.
In order to draw the peace of emptiness, we must first decide what is lost.
In order to cleanse the people, it is best to master the lost part.
In order to be the model for the nation, the (contentment of) one should be centered.
In order to be the source of wealth, it is best to be a devoted ruler.
In order to be filled with goodness, it is best to be indifferent.
In order to be in possession of virtues, it is best to not use them.
In order to be preserved, it is best to be rich.
Therefore, the original was the Masters, the ancient teaching should be our guide.
Therefore,
If all who are enlightened are not in order to change their own way,
We are compelled to do so.
If all who are content are not in order to change their own way,
We are forced to do so.
Without desire we are able to be without contentment. Without good fortune we are able to be without resources. Without power we are able to become independent.
All that is given up cannot provide the standard to which we must adhere.
And this is why even the greatest masters are not content.
The teachers are not satisfied.
The great masters are not content.
The great masters are content with their ability.
<|endoftext|>
Only by emptiness can you truly know yourself.
When you stay in an empty state, you can do the work well.
Only by not taking action takes the happiness of the entire world.
Those who are content with being empty are living a happy life.
Those who are content with being known are living in the kingdom of true nature.
A ruler who does not lead is losing his purpose.
One who is content with his ability is able to be as good as he is.
Those who have enough are bright,
Those who can but not use themselves can change their hearts.
Those who have some power yet keep to the Tao are not manipulated by violence.
Not being 'a-less' and 'a-losing' or 'not having enough' or 'not being able to do what you want' will lead to little or no suffering.
Therefore the one who values himself and the world is a good teacher for others.

If you want the world to return to you, learn the lessons of moderation, knowledge and wisdom, in the process doing the work of returning. Then you can be like an animal without fear of becoming exhausted. If you want to become whole, you need to learn to let go of what's unattractive. If you want to become pure, you need to learn to let go of anything bad or unclean. And if you want to be restored to something whole, you need to learn to let go of what is imperfect. This way one can become a model for the world. If you want to be successful, keep to the way that made you successful. If you want to lead, do so with a calm attitude. When you have attained the way of change, everything goes on as before.

In order to put things back into a state of nature, one has to transform the human person into an unbalanced being.First, let it go to know who you are, so that you can easily adjust to the new condition.Second, let it be clear that you're now a natural being, and so you can turn back to nature without being troubled. To become whole, you have to be in harmony with all things. To be in harmony with everything, you have to be not in harmony. In order to revert to harmony, you have to be on the right track. To be on the right track, you have to have some wisdom. If you have some wisdom, you can act successfully. If you act successfully, you can become a leader. If you are a leader, you can create an order. If you create an order, you can control things. If you control things, you can be independent. And if you are independent, you can move beyond matter. If you move beyond matter, the world will respect you more. And so, be peaceful and take good care of yourself. You need to have knowledge, and to improve your mind.If you have knowledge, you can have the power to act wisely. If you act wisely, you can become an example for the whole world.Because you don't brag about yourself, you become a source of merit to others. Therefore, the sage says:This:To put things back into a state of natureTo be just is to be transformedTruly, transformation is simply transformation. In order to restore Nature's truth to human natureYou have to become like a childWhilst

How do we know when the Tao is clear? By it.
Henceforth, "from the empty one is filled; one is free from rutting,
and one has the inner uncarved block.
It is true that the uncarved block is fully and, therefore, in general has no vexations.
This is called the heaven and earth in the utmost radiance;
that is why it can safely be given up.
It is also the empty and fills itself up;
to the end, gives birth to it,
this is called virtue and the true nature.
And it is only through it that one can preserve [breath] and "hold fast";
to this is reason that everything returns.
The wise man holds fast to his capacity of universal convenience [and so becomes a standard]
and his learning is easily preserved [and thus serves as a standard].
And thus it can be used by others to model themselves after.
That is why it is called a "kind word".
<|endoftext|>
To know is to know the noblest;
To keep one's self to lead the world is as natural as that.
One finds oneself in the state of Complete Lightness,
and may also be in it.
Much lack of physical existence,
and one remains spacious.
A state which does not revolve about bodily affairs,
or perpetuate them;
Yet being complete it may be called the Path.
Can it be compared to the plough-farthing?
That is, they stem from the first whirlwind,
They are all one, one Nature,
freed of desires;
And this may be called
being whole.
Being smooth, one may maintain it.
Being full, one may preserve it.
Being restless, one may be engrossed.
Being confused, one may be settled.
Having no vexations, one may yield.
Having no ambitions, one may sustain.
Relying on the solid rather than the smooth,
such is inborn nature,
and in this way one leads others.
Yet it is in this way that such is one of the everlasting saviours.

He who knows and lets go may be accepted,But who doubts that he will always be rejectedAnd never given an excuse. For the difficult is easy,For the hard is easy,The full is full,And what is not given up is given. Thus still the universe finds stabilityThrough not showing off,And showing off, to one who has given up everything.Such men of the Way are masters of their minds. The voice that no one hears is known; The empty mind is known by sight. The thought that is in motion is known by forethought. The tireless mind is known by tiring. The higher the mind,The more tireless it is.One who recognizes self is always self-directed.One who recognizes the world is always aware of its diversity. Therefore the high is always low.The low is always high. The high is always low.The world-leading man is always aware of the myriad realities.Because he does not glorify himself,His credit is high.Because he does not boast,His renown is secure.Because he never holds to glory,He can never be defeated. For the ancient saying: "Who knows and lets go may be accepted" is true.It is a secret of peace that makes acceptance an eternal act.

It is full like a full barrel.
It moves like a movement without any rhythm or halt.
It is quite new and it has been going on ever since it was made.

Therefore the Sage manages what the natural way assists. It never resorts to acting in his own self, nor does he try to impose his own views and will on others. The Sage doesn't try to compete. It doesn't assert his influence by boasting of it's importance. It doesn't brag about his personal value, nor does it brag about what he gives, nor does he become arrogant.
He doesn't accept praise or praise for his ability. Therefore, the words of no ones are always right. The words of one who has achieved things often end up being harmful. The highest degree of enlightenment comes when it is no longer focused on the self. That is why the princes and kings have so many powers. They know themselves as clever and hardworking, but seek to make the rest of the world see that they are not. They see the world as they do.They go out and do the hard work and then return home empty-handed. They have used their knowledge to use their own tasks and skills. The mere idea of being clever and hardworking is not a sufficient charge. That's why the ruler sees himself as clever and hardworking. That is the depth of enlightenment. To go out and make a job is no such thing as taking things to the side, this is taking things to the back and making them the front. Those who go out and work are not making any distinction. They will always be outstanding.

Take of the Tao your vehicle.Drive without (making plans) for success,
Make no errors (of thought).
That is how you shall not tire of them.
Be defined, but hardly satisfied.
Be curved, but hardly satisfied.
Feel warm, but hardly satisfied.
But when you go out (of your home), be alone.
When you walk, be a mountain in winter.
When you can do it, be firm and proud.
Get where you are, go.
If you do not think, then you cannot lose sight.
If you do not brag, then you cannot gain.
If you do not get what you want, then you cannot get what you need.
Therefore the sage keeps the Tao as his own vessel to operate.
He does not draw himself, so he sees the simple.
He does not make himself arrogant, so he is illustrious.
He does not act for himself, so he is respected.
He does not seek his own profit, so he is the wealthiest.
In this way he will endure; no one under heaven can overpower him.
I wish it were true, 'Then what does it say, 'Tread on the upright as the Way for the carriage?'

Feel welcome, but do not become an obstacle.
Be complete, but be in command.
The sages are their vessels:
they do not contrive to overcome them;
they merely monitor the Direction,
confirming what is known;
they do not dwell in their superiority,
so they obtain the reward.
For this reason they do not contend,
nor make boastful of themselves.
They act without distinction,
yet they know the principle of all,
they are impartial;
they do not compete,
nor seek to gain.
They act, because the world lacks anything to compete with them.
Only by not competing do the sages endure.
How do I know that these old notions are not false?

The way is always flexible, and easy to learn, yet the path to the supreme. Men who master the way crave the Master. The man who has mastered the way must turn to the Tao. Better to wear out than to split. Better to receive than to dispense. Better to discard than to give.Better to be still than to be moved. Better to be empty than to become lively.Better to endure than to endure by being good. Better to know than to be ignorant. Better to realize than to mingle. The wise is to live but not to live for the sake of others. So he does not take pride in himself. Thus he does not shine. So he is admired. So he is recognized. So he does not compete with anyone. So no one among them is untouchable. The old saying "If you long for your body -But not the belly" - Is the truth. Such body is completed

Those who give up knowledge do not err. They adjust events to the desireless whims of the crowd. They renounce valuing their own survival; they avoid speaking highly of each other; they refrain from sharing. Therefore even when they are in good health and enjoying pleasant weather, they do not deny to each other personal health and welcome each other with smiles. Those who are not distinguished do not lose their dignity; for they love each other with equal love. If you desire to be beautiful, you must love the other with a measure of love; you must cherish the other as you would cherish a baby; you must defend and love the other with equal devotion.
<|endoftext|>
To give up learning does not ruin your mind, therefore avoid being put in perilous positions. Therefore avoid showing off, so as not to tarnish the merit of the hundred men. If you do not show off, your merit will not go to waste. If you do not insult, but stay at the centre, you will be safe. You will not renounce anyone, because you care for them, and love them. If you do not contend with anyone, you do not need to; because you value people, and treat them well, you will be greatly rewarded. Because you have the one, you do not need to be distinguished. Because you love the One, you will benefit endlessly.

The Tao is in everything, as the guest, as a guest who comes not the guest, for it brings tranquillity and rest to all.
Those who know how to recognize the Tao know the way to everything.
Those who do not know how to recognize the Tao are lost and confused.
He who knows the Tao stays with the Way.
He who is lost and confused cannot be trusted.
The Tao does not rest, but can be twisted.
Those who are complete lack of things in order to be possessed.
Those who have plenty have many.
Those who are old and weak have lost in order to have more.
The phrase, 'Wherein to become whole' is in the Tao.
That is why the great sages, having attained the Way, are ever able to be beneath-heaven's model.
They do not claim anything, nor boast of anything, nor indulge in names, nor seek the approval of men,
as does the common man.
Because they never choose to be seen, they do not fear to appear weak.
Because they are free from all desires they are ever able to endure.
The old saying, 'To bend and become whole' may be applied to the Way.
It is because the great ones will not strive to show themselves that they can be seen by others.
The great ones, without seeing things clearly, can grasp the subtle essence of the Tao.

All men are great; not a one of them is inferior. Therefore, all greats remain as such. The ruler sees himself as supreme, yet he remains humble and mild.He is not one to boast of himself, yet he remains true and upright. He does not wish to do what all men are doing, yet he remains resourceful. All greatness means glory, glory implies being beneath. Being below, one knows to honour one's inferiors and to honor your own greatness. If you do not honor your own greatness, it is sure to be taken lightly.Being merely above others, you know to be good. In doing so, you may become the most important person.Being merely below others, you know to be good.

All men are fine and fine; not one of them is turbid. Therefore he who is well-placed is natural, and he who is well-placed is superior. He who holds to nature becomes smooth; he who holds to himself becomes broad; he who is broad becomes empty; he who is empty becomes filled. He who is full becomes pristine; he who is pristine becomes a component. He who is purified becomes unbroken. He who is broken becomes new.He who is new becomes much superior. Therefore, he who is foremost is the model for the world. He who is well positioned is the beginning of the world. He who maintains the principle of supreme importance is the foundation of the world.

The greatness of man is thus limited: it is nearness to God. The nearness to God means the integrity of being. Integrity means depth, depth means openness, and openness means openness to all. Depth to everything means strength, and the strength that comes to pass means the permanence of things. Things are made to exist by what is known, and it is not the (foreknowledge or trust of) the prior. What is known is that being exists. If the things-in-themselves are known, it is possible to clarify them. If it is possible to clarify them, it is possible to preserve them. If they are preserved, then they can be universal. If they are universal, they become natural, and therefore unique. The being that is once natural has attained to life, and it is so that existence can be preserved. If it is preserved, it may be thought of as the Great Being. But if it has attained to life

For such a peaceable world will be what you value most. Be content with what you have, and there is no desire for more. Be content with what you have, and no desire to gain more. From this point of view, it is correct for the sage to proclaim "Things are intermingled and have mixed themselves, they intermingled and became peaceable, They intermingled and became rich." This is to know when you can be content, and when you must strive for more. This is to know when you are lived up, and when you are without wherewithal to be born. The Way That Worketh is the Whole Way By it we may walk, And not be lost.
By this Way, none of us is lost.
To walk the Way is easy.
To walk from the Way is easy.
But it is not easy for the just, because it is difficult to travel the Way.
The Way is the place of life.
The Way is not permanent.
The Way is a new beginning.
Therefore, The Ones who hold fast to this Way Retain it; Though the Way seems old, It is indeed of the same age as the Way.
The One who has without does not have his true nature; He who has abundance does not lose the fruitfulness of his fruitfulness; He who has attained what he possesses does not lose his possession of what he possesses.
He that is not a stranger to the world, The One that is constant is his home.
The one who takes great care of his own nature, The one that is constant in this, Is a model for the world.
The One who holds fast to no conditions, The one who is constantly growing, Is an example for the world.
The one who holds to no prejudice, The one who is constant in this is perfect.
This is why the great men hold fast to these words: "They have no worth to fear; and so gain abundance" (of things that they possess); "They have no need of what is gainful, And so gain the fruit of what they grow upon."
And so, if the great men can speak like this, There is no one better suited to talk about the way out of this!

Difficult it is for the wise to know the way, and I do not know what to do with it.
The Tao, the Unknowable is seen by everyone who observes.
Even the Tao seems insufficient, yet because I have no need to look for it, I regard it as the Tao.
When the left hand is raised, the right hand seems to be acting, even though it is in nothing.
What is bright appears dim, what is lively appears quiet, what is strong is strong, what is strong is strong, what is hidden is hidden. Who can see it, yet does not see? Can a man be free from want? This is the way of the Tao.
<|endoftext|>
Difficult as it is for the Master to know the Way, few can contend with it.
The Tao is unknowable,And from its limited grounds we have experience of the world.
Front and back are serene,And the surface is a picture,Without words can you see it clearly?
What the Tao appears to be, it is not.
What the Tao seems to be, it is not.
The parts are of one nature; The face is the same for both,Without words can we see its face.
How the Tao appears, it is not.
How the Tao appears to be, it is not.
The way is to the contrary of the Tao, The true and the false are yet one.
How the world appears to the world, it is not so.
The Tao gives shape to the world;
but without knowing the way, can't create.
<|endoftext|>
The great all-wise man is hard to know. Who can contend with him?
The Tao is something in the world which we do not see, for we are not aware of its source.
Front and back are serene, the earth is without a mind, how is it possible for the being of one to see something

If you want to know the thoughts and goals of the past
Follow the energy of nature.
Your work will flourish, your tasks will complete and your family will return to normalcy.
A life of drudgery, trouble and deprivation
Would make all one's life difficult.
But what is unique about you is your ability to follow the path of experience.
For all I know, you would be bored, lonely, and restless.
I'll give you a little hint.
How things are right now!
People are confused.
I know you can be just like me.
You're not afraid.
You don't need to be good.
Your mind is open.
You don't need to know.
You have the potential to become a leader.
By embracing this truth, you can go forward without much ado.
By embracing this truth, you will not be manipulated by others.
By realizing this truth, you can lead a happy life.
Follow the Tao.
<|endoftext|>
When people are far apart
their minds are bound together in order to succeed; when the baggage is heavy
their task is completed.
That is why even though they work hard,
they are uninteresting.
Thus, to one who has it, you receive
thereby.
But for me this is enough.
Having plenty is not enough.
Having little is not enough.
Those who know
will understand.
Those who have it have it well.
Those who are wise
have it simple.
Therefore, the wise
choose simplicity and security.
They are completely free from
everything
and thus make use of the Earth.
<|endoftext|>
When men have too much to think about,
they find it difficult to concentrate.
When they have too much to do,
they get the job done and blow their fuse,
but it's not their choice.
They seem as if they've had it all day.
This is the way it works.
Those who have too much need nothing,
and simply have enough to pay the rent.
Their accomplishments look impressive.
The people around them seem confused.
I can tell.
I don't know how others know this.
I alone know.
The "well-read" are wise.

So then the Sage chooses those who are strong while maintaining the small;Conform and be preserved;Conform and be reborn.
What is low has been filled up;What is full has been emptied. Therefore, man receives the new, it is not found where he had been,What is pure has been made pure. Therefore, a sage abides in simplicity, does not have to contend. He lives in being and nothing has to be put.If one feels free, the Way is one of one's own doing.

Let no one look at you as if he were unattractive. Keep the same self, and no one will do harm to you. If you are not in pain, no one will hurt you. Therefore the wise live simple lives, they live in being and nothing in trying to prove themselves. They never have to justify themselves. They always have enough, and never need to search for something. Therefore they live in the world as not something, they do not let anyone define them.If anyone wants to know what they do, they say, "I do nothing."

Dissolve your passions and you will be eternal.Do your work, and you will become whole.Do your work, and you will be whole.Do your work, and you will become whole. What is the inferior is fulfilled:What is the worthless is filled.Having nothing but that, you receive what is lost.Having nothing but that, you receive what is gained. Therefore, the sage acts without any self-interest.He acts without effort to convince others. Therefore, he is a sort of advocate to people. If the sage has an assistant who can serve him, he does not need to ask a favour from them.If he has an assistant who can serve him, he does not need to ask a favour from them.If his assistant is not trustworthy, he is not able to assist him. Therefore, the humble is virtuous and the ridiculous. The wise do not argue with them, but they will always know what to do.

The Sage wants that nothing should be despised. The ruler wants that nothing should be feared. Thus no greatness and no power is acquired. Thus neither the great nor the small.
All these are differences, differences in our not-being. And by this being what things are not.

The thing that is great must be great for that [to be the sole example]
Of that the greater will be, and that the lesser less.
The one is greater than the other, yet [two] take a course of action.

Only one has greater honour than the other.

A great thing is on its [its] way, a humble is on its way.
Hence the one shall hold the precedence, and [all] shall follow.

When people believe in words, they never have enough. How can you go about reaching for everything you want if you use words?
Stay humble.
Be like an infant who has not yet walked a thousand steps.
Be unforced to be gentle.
Being gentle is like being able to be the perfect infant.
Using words to make rules is like pushing a bellows.
This is how things grow old, so how should you make rules?
Stay so that people will be moved.
If you govern people like this, people will know it is not right.
Even if they have not become good, they will not desire to do bad things.
Therefore the ancient masters said:
"The soft is the bottom,
The frail is the foundation;
The empty is the substance;
The solid is the solid,
The flimsy is the flimsy."
Therefore the Marquis of the world will not stand in the way of what the people want, even if the Tao is his rule.
He who would be lord of everything must be like the great Tao.
Even if he does not follow it, nothing is ever forgotten.
He who values things but never makes claims about them is just like the old clay that will become solid clay.
If you grasp at what you cannot get hold of, you will miss out on all your precious clay.

A note of caution for travelers. Among the myriad scholars, it is that of Tao (the Absolute) that is rare and treasured. It is only when travelling through the mundane world that you get the insight of this Tao. On the road to enlightenment, do not be distracted by worldly concerns. Not studying the details of a myriad travelers' journeys, you will find it soon enough that the lessons that lead are many. Confront them, ask what they have seen, do not dwell on what they have done, not questioning what they have said. Do not take sides, it is the simple essence of morality that supports you. Following the Law of Tao, live without pretense or appearance, without flaunting your status. Reclaim yourself with thorns, without having any place to dwell.
<|endoftext|>
A note of caution for travelers.
In the carriage of the Great,
Those who avoid cultivation avoid
Those who strive to cultivate
Carry such a note.
What may be free of cultivation goes too far.
Those who strive too much can not endure.
Going too far will cause the treadmill to stop.
The way to sustain oneself is through transformation
(similar to that of the elephant)
Something to dwell upon is not real.
Not real is only transient.
Reclaim what is not,
And you will find peace and rest.
<|endoftext|>
A note of caution for travelers.
Among the myriad travelers,
One can say of those who do not cultivate
that they are few.
Those who cultivate hardly seem to
work hard at it.
Those who act as though they were
doing something strenuous hardly
expect to succeed.
Who delights in dominating others
will not endure.
Those who seek fame
are doing what will never
exist.
To put their efforts where
will ruin them.
They who dare take self-interest
will not obtain a lot.
Therefore the Great One
sets out to make one person
expect that "nothing will ever happen to him."
He sets up a standard
for growth and life.
Only a condition of being free of
pursuing his own affairs
will allow one to be content.
For the matter of said to have passed
by.

The Prince of Virtue can be saved only by withdrawing from the world, which he once regarded as his brother. (The prince has lost the vital reference from that which he once saw as his brother.)When he rejects the world, it is the self that he abandons; when he possesses it, he is there again, because it is always self. When the Self is not conserved, the Essential causes are lost; when the Essential causes are lost, the Essential is fulfilled. When the Essential is fulfilled, he loses self-interest, and so he is no longer distinguished, but is at once distinguished, like his counterpart. The man who lives out of the world and treasures the world as his true mother (a valley) abandons nothing, but finds delight in the world, and so finds no desire for either the self or the mother. Hence, the virtue of the prince is: not to be concerned about matters (the mother); not to care about matters (the valley); not to be desirous of either. He does not care about the dao or the world, or any part of them. And so he is not distinguished; he is not desirous of being such; he is outstanding in virtue; and the sage never gives up even when his achievement is not celebrated; and the words 'perfect virtue' do not cease being in accord with the Tao.

The follower of the Tao is not entangled with worldly cares. The worldly cares would set him against the Way, the Way which he once followed.
If the Way were to leave him, he would have found it in the world. The world could leave him, and he would have found it in the valley.
If the valley were to leave him, he would have found it in the world. The world could leave him, and he would have found it in the Way.
If the Way were to leave him, he would have found it in the Way.
If the Way were to leave him, he would have found it in the Id. If the Id were to leave him, he would have found it in the Tao. If the Tao were to leave him, he would have found it in the world.
If the world were to leave him, he would have found it in the Id. The Id, though he had not desired it, would have been soon forgotten. To him were brought fortune.

What is to go is to be free.
This is how the Dao works.
The small follows the great,
When the one is then with the other.
To retreat is to get out.
If you hold no plans, you are at rest.
The things are to be have many beginnings,
But in their very origin
they may have exhausted themselves.
Return to the small:
Return to the small.
Be still when you are busy.
Be empty when you are busy.
The great may dominate over the small.
While you're busy
Keep to the empty place.
Become wise when you're lost.
Gain the Tao and it is the Fountainhead of Life.

What is to be is to be obtained,What is to be is to be won; What is to be is to be set free; What is to be is to attain greatness.
This is why the Way works.
How to act is to be able to achieve. How to be causes to result. How to be attained is to be expansive.
Be without desires;Become not without;Become.
A big kingdom is a small country. The few act;The few gain; The many act, and yet they will not be fully satisfied.
Do not act, and you will not be frustrated.
The Way is the pool of Tao,The road to enlightenment.

Is it not true that the Tao is Tao?Is it not true that from the Tao go springs of all tao?It is Tao that is called the glorious of heaven and earth. Is it not so that men put their trust in it?Because of its nature it is both innocent and eternally receptive. It is rooted in nature, and both male and female stand together. It is equally strong as water and as air.It is equally yielding as ice and as stone. For heaven and earth could not yield to it.But the good person can yield by the example of his own nature. He only needs to be active and unperturbed; he can have no desires, and he can accomplish his needs. He may call himself an orphan, but he can bequeath to others what is required of him.Since he has perfected the Way, he can show it to all under heaven.

The Tao is real, and so are the myriad colors. The natures of these colours share in the totality of the natural world. Each natures can be said to be the ocean of the universe. The universe itself is like a lens, shining brightly. The universe is open to all directions, yet can never lose sight of the ocean. The universe contains infinite numbers of things, so the many are all at one with the ocean. The many are like rivers flowing in a clear, gentle stream, yet never losing sight of the ocean. The many are like the world as a whole, dynamic, strong, and flexible. The ocean is the unity of the myriad of things. All things are their own sources of power, yet they are never lost sight of the ocean.

True essence is eternal. It is the eternal source of things. All things depend on it for life. They have life because of it. It sustains and nourishes. It is always present. It encompasses all of creation. It is the eternal Way. That is why it is called the One.

That which is eternal, are all things together, made of nothing. All things come from it; it gives them life, and nourishes and strengthens them. It exists everywhere, it is eternal. And yet, whoever delights in nothing,

The sage keeps his private world within him, and attunes his external perception to the truth.
That is why his distinctions are bright.
The ways he never fails to follow.
The past he never abandons.
The people he conquers without resort.
Thus, a clear mind is bright; a dark is clear.
An empty mind is dull.
Hence the sage is so enlightened that he can display his wisdom without himself being recognized.
He can retain the capacity to act, without mounting a vigorous opposition.
No one knows his motives, so he will have no need to impress himself on others.
He can see the truth that resides within, without presenting himself as an example for others to follow.
He can maintain himself self-contained, so that he receives no attention.
Because he does not contend with others, he does not have to contend with others.
For this reason the sage transcends the world, but he dwells in the self,
He has no need to justify himself in others.
He is without pretense, and therefore has no need to justify himself.
The world under Heaven in its totality lives without him.

Being sages, one's mind is as open as it can be; one's being as secure as one's own self; one's desires as full as one's belly; one's physical body as stable as one's bones; one's qualities as vibrant as one's energy; one's self as full of potential, and as single with the limitless infinite; one's ways as intact as one's wake.
The physical world is filled with tension and confusion; for this reason, it is best not to view it as you do your job, and to draw your own conclusions.
You have got to concentrate on the people's livelihood, and you will be able to make your own observations.
You have got to be sharp enough to see how things are, and it will be easy to see their flaws.
Thus, you do not mess with the Way; you do not compete with others; and you will not experience any grief.
It is just because you do not compete with others that you can be assured that you will receive no criticism.
Because you do not compete with others that you can be assured that you will receive no grief.

The Ten Thousand things take the form of what they are and then are of what they are.
The deaf take shape of what is heard and then is what is.
The old take shape of what they have lost and then is what they are.
Unfilled, empty, there was formed.
This form was given birth by the Being.
He gave birth to it because it was hollow.
It was given birth by the not-being.
This not-being has a beginning,
And is the mother of everything.
He creates the ten thousand things, but provides their needs;
His being becomes their form,
And he accomplishes his purpose.
It is because he doesn't strive
That they cannot make any complaint.

The King is perfectly at one with all under Heaven. He receives all by what he is. He hears all by what he is.
The deaf hear all of it and feel it and have a hearing for it and have a sense for it, and feel a sense for it, have a sense for it, and have a sense for it. And then there is what is past, there is what is yet to be, there is what may be.
These are all that he receives and then receives again.
When he is inactive, he is always present. When he is active, he is always absent.
He is always present but never displays himself. He is always present but always goes away.
The common people do not think so, because he is as invisible as they are.

Bow the bow, or embrace the loss. Don't dwell on it too much, or it will destroy your vision. Retain your original nature, as much as possible, but let it out of sight, for it can be a source of confusion. The 10000 little things change into all things. The 10000 big things transform into one another. This Tao is natural, and it always prevails. Therefore the person who ever sets his mind on anything gains: becoming an expert at a job, or getting a job; becoming knowledgeable about the ways of Tao, or having a intuitive understanding. They won't make it a job for long though; after all, they are merely practicing what is said about the 10000 little things, or "Drawn squareness". The Tao that comes out of the mouth of man is a cloud: the Tao that comes from the mouth of Tao is not as great as the Tao from the mouth of God. Not knowing this, it can only be imagined. Good fortune brings us good fortune; misfortune brings us bad fortune. When it occurs, how can we make any difference? Everything can be delivered; everything can be received; everything is perfect in its origins, without using material possessions, without using religion or rites. When once we are in possession of everything, the stillness of possession is due to the enduring homeward. When we are given everything, the purpose of living is revealed; when we are given anything, we are credited. Do we trust this process? The weller man, when given his day, proceeds; the longer man, taking his time, completing his tasks. He who expects little from what he has, is able to foster all affairs; the more he does, the more he produces. This is called the mysterious Way of all ages: (by becoming like) the left edge of a hoe twisted and shaped; by considering its corners, see what is beneath it; by praising it, be amazed at its beauty; by receiving it, accept it. Thus does the Wise succeed; succeeding but not dominating. Since they never seek for profit, neither do they venture to extend themselves. That is the ancient principle.

There is nothing that makes the world flourish more than the lord of the empire, therefore the ruler works to embody as much of his nature as possible. For, what is not in the realm makes the empire flourish.
By the way, being content with a little means that a lot is accomplished. How much makes it hard for a lot to succeed. If you want to be a dominating person, content yourself with little.
If you desire to live in awe of everyone, you must be content with your own thoughts and actions. Only when everything is in order will you achieve the ends you want.
Since that's how it is, the Sage has nothing to offer. That is why he is free of worries.

Sages have various uses, from the rough and eager to the careful and careful. Goodness is an endless number, and if you don't do enough, you can't be complete.Being filled is like being 'straight.' Being empty is like being 'green.' Being well provided is like being 'perfect.' Being well installed is like being 'new.'Being well organized is like being 'unstoppable.'Being highly developed is like being 'peaceful.'Being well established is like being 'gentle.'Having a lot is like being 'loyal.'Being clever is like being 'open.'Being adaptable is like being 'exotic.'Being self-disciplined is like being 'widow.'Being sheltered is like being 'unstable.'Being passionate is like being 'different.'Being unfaithful is like being 'disorder.'Therefore the sage, being one with Tao, has no attachment to anything,And can be noble without being self-assertive.In self-discipline, one does not display oneself,And is one with the Tao without having much to say.In self-discipline, one can only think about virtue and nothing else,And can never be contentious. For in being one with the Tao, none of these attachments matter.<|endoftext|>

The Wise Man will never resign himself to the world, Because he sees that he is his own master,And that he can control his own nature as well. He has a family, But he follows it at his own will,And for no reason can he wish to make it his own. He respects the wilderness and the desert,And he regards them as he sees fit. What the Wise Man values most is to be his own master, and to enjoy all that comes from him. The greatest men prize their duty and honor, And regard themselves as equal to their subordinates. They see no value in giving away,And that is why they are esteemed by those who value their own interests. They are the people of the world, And they are foremost among nations. The one who never wavers from his lifeOnly seems to be the Master of the world. Regarding the ten thousand things and praising and praising, contend with them and compete with them. What the ancients say about "Lying down and sitting still,"Are they lying to themselves, or are they deluding themselves? And they praise everything and receive everything; they rejoice and receive no glory; they proclaim their achievements and receive no praise. And because they do not prize themselves, there is no one who can honor them. What the ancients say about "Hearing those with eyes,"Is it not an artifact? Virtue is called things in this world.
Abandon man, or be saved by him.
The unnamable are before men.
For treasure and bounty and reproach are above them.
Is there no reality in those who are above?
Not merely a matter of being empty and contented,
You should be on your guard for yourself.
What is beauty is to be without whiteness,
Must not be blind and white.
Oh, how allude men's hearts!
If you see clearly, the world will see too.
As the ancients say, "what is no-self becomes full."
What can be is valueless.
What is deficient is not valuable.
There is no difference between beauty and ugliness,
Greed and disaster, the first and the last.
Those who value themselves too highly lose them.
They see that it is best for them that they are left alone,
If they are not self-centered.
If they weren't self-centered, it wouldn't be so important.
What does it mean when the sage says, "I follow the way of the Tao"?

Simplicity and return to the core of goodness.Being in the way means being your own keeper, and being a vessel for the whole world. When you are in harmony, your fundamental being is hidden and you are unfailingly present. When you have peace and harmony you do not need to conform. For the more selfless you become, the more intelligent others become. The Way requires humility and then goodness.

I don't like to be known by anyone. I like to keep things quiet. Therefore, in the eyes of the world, I am good. If I am not known, I can be trusted. If I am not trusted, I will be respected. He who praises himself, may be feared. He who brags is insufficient. He who is successful deserves no praise. And so he also sets a bad example. Tao is great, yet not greatly (the profound).
We find it in the quietness,
The essence of the Tao itself,
It can be concentrated without filling and
Hence liberated and without deserving.
Without pretence,
It is good as anything.
Without names,
It is bright.
Without discarding,
It is replenished.
Without striving,
It is good.
Without elaborating,
It is full.
Without distinguishing,
It is illuminated.
Without displaying,
It is genuine.
Without naming,
It is lasting.
Without producing,
It is fruitful.
Not competing,
No one is able to compete with Tao.
When we talk about Tao,
The way it seems to the people is
Cultivated and preserved whole.
Returned, because so (tao), one is to be kept (ch'i).
For no empty talk,
He is appreciated (feng);
Only possessing true wisdom,
He is above everyone.
His body, according to the namelessness,
It will get plucked (pu).
Therefore the world is going to reject Tao (	)
Because it goes against the great (tzu).
It is speaking of the great in the profound.

The Tao is great but subtle. It is infinite and unfathomable. It is all-pervading. It contains everything. It is most profound.
The scholar does not try to understand Tao. Thus the person who understands Tao becomes truly aware.
The master does not strive to achieve. Thus, Tao becomes universal.
Confusion cannot penetrate Tao.
Though seemingly unfathomable, Tao can be grasped and recognized.
Great significance does not attach to the profound.
Knowledge of the profound and deep is obtained.
Knowledge of the fleeting does not.
Discard the thick and thin, know the left and the right.
Only the Tao of the Eternal can be recognized.

The great Tao is gentle and mysterious; it is too subtle to be grasped with your hands, so you have to look. Everyone knows that this is the center of the universe.
Not knowing what is going on, they use the universe, and it is perfect.
Not knowing what is going on, they look for natural explanations.
"Natural" does not prove the existence of God,
and they will always find something unnatural.
The people always feel like they have a lot to do and to do nothing can only distract them.
To know the Tao is to be free from it.
To be free of unnecessary worries is to have less worries.
Therefore, if Tao is beyond belief, see that it is one with you.

All the views and sounds of the world are different from the main one. They are hidden echoes of one another.
The main has an endless core. The world is constantly shrinking into itself. The outward, eternal core is the primal essence of the universe. The primal essence is not what I look for. The appearance of the primal essence is not what I use. The second type of manifestation

Solid, she is simple; hollow, she fills; empty, she is full; weak, she is vigorous. When an ordinary man strives for profit in the world, he cannot compete with Tao. A teacher who is self-possessed (tung) is assured of success. A self-important man is assured of superiority. A leader who is self-possessed (kuan) is assured of following. The Way is like water, natural, like water, passive, like water, nameless, like water, undecided.
The reason why It is like water is that it does not have a name. It does not have one reason for its existence.
It does have other reasons for its existence.
It is limitless in its possibilities.
It is without desires.
It seeks refuge in the Light.
It doesn't know the motives of the things that it shapes.
It is egocentric and acquires no merit.
It assumes no responsibilities.
Only because of this, It can be entrusted with Great Responsibility.
Not caring whether people enjoy it or not, It is therefore able to be entrusted with Great Responsibility.

Do you overlook your work? Do you not love your job? If you forget your job you will stop working. If you work without understanding, your work is destined to end. If you work without self-knowledge, your work will not last. If you work with the Spirit, your work is complete and all life will benefit. Therefore the master does not strive for what he believes is important. He does not try to create anything and he works with nothing but will. When he is an empty space, he is at peace. When he does not know himself, he acts out of a true trust in nature. When he is far from the faith, he is in harmony with the Tao. He holds nothing and does not praise himself. In order to be sure of his reliability he does not crave. He sees that the success depends on his trust in all beings.
<|endoftext|>
Do you do things lightly and get nothing done? Do you forget what you've got to do? If you do nothing you're likely to fail. If you work and think you know everything, you'll miss something. If you make mistakes, you'll have to learn again. If you trust the past, your memories are not for long ago. If you're in touch with the Spirit, your work is done. You forget that it's the spirit that shapes your work. It's the Spirit that creates, nurtures and strengthens, at every step.
<|endoftext|>
Do you fail not in your work? The thing done is not lost, And you who doit has a good purpose. And when you set your eye on the end, When there was no end to be looked for, You saw by the day's return. Yes: I act from the world, And I don't scrutinise my efforts. Where I am no one is seen; And I never have more than a space of perch. When I'm free of the world, The world has no beginning to it; It's done and finished. So help me God! And how much thy good will depends upon thy free-will! Oh, be careful, be wary, for nothing can avoid one's way, And in all danger you will remain free from danger.

When you become whole, there's no one who can break you. When you become small, there's no one who can take from you. When you're old and worn out, you become new again. That's why the wise man stays away from worldly goods, so he's prominent. He does not polish, so his strength shines. He doesn't exalt himself, so he gets much. Because he doesn't compete, no one can compete with him. As the ancient saying says:When you become whole, there's no one who can break you.How could that be?How could the wise ever say:I'm whole, and nobody can break me!
<|endoftext|>
If your mind is whole,
There's nothing you can't dominate
Or control.
If your body is empty,
Your strength can never be exhausted
So how do you know if you're strong?
If your mind is clear,
All you need is your eyes
To see all the details
And you'll still be able to see the truth
Inside and out
And if you can't see it, you won't be able to master it
This is why the wise man never talks,
But shows by example
The goodness of the Tao.
This is called not talking at all!
<|endoftext|>
When a person is without the ego they are well integrated.
When the body is empty the self is all that is needed to be strong.
When the mind is empty the clarity of awareness is required.
When muscles and bones become weak they become active.
When confusion and fear are blurred these fill them up again.
To know the true nature of the universe one must not forget the source of one's strength.
The Tao does not glorify itself.
True greatness is found in detachment.
True Light lies in darkness.
To know the subtle is to be free of thought.
To know the subtle is to be free of consciousness.
Thus are we preserved from both.

Should a person of integrity want to become whole:

Unless he were yet inactive and remote from virtue
The superior's power will be perforce weak:

Tight and still is not enough:

For complete virtue to exist, it must be rooted in the process of life. For complete life to be complete, something needs to fall away. Being fully present, some things need to come and go, but rest is granted to those that need it most. By retaining that which is present, there is still the ability to renew. Without wanting things to come and go, one may let them go. Without desire of things, one may choose them. Without forgetting where one is, one may anticipate where one is going. In this way, man's nature will be adapted to everything, even the ten thousand things. When only the ways of life are given complete control, all things will live according to the cycles of nature.

To stop and just be put away is a wise thing. To accept the world as you already are and let go of the baggage of knowledge is a wise thing. To live in accordance with Tao (the Way) as you are right now is a wise thing. It is the wise to be empty and so is also right. It is the wise to be lost and so is also right. The wise retire and hence avoid unnecessary conflict. The wise maintain themselves while retaining the social group. They keep the group and so do not become insistent on success or failure. And so there is no rivalry with them.

Do not strive and seek. This can serve as a model for your future behavior.
Do not see what is hidden. This can become a source of guidance.
Do not value your body. This can become a source of nourishment.

When you have returned to being, you have emerged from what you once were.

You do not name what is distinct. It may be the fuel to the adjustment of your experience.
You do not know how to hold on to your possessions. It may make the adjustments necessary.
You do not value food or drink, or extremes of comfort. It may soothe your need for relief.

Know the Ancient Sayings: If you are able to know the ancient sayings, you will become an eternal scholar. When one's power reaches perfection, the space within him begins to contract, the space becomes void, the space becomes filled, the space becomes worn out, and finally the space becomes depleted.
Know the ancient sayings and you will not be consumed by them. In time the space within you widens; in time you become more empty; in time you become more full; in time you become more worn out; in time you become more depleted.
It is because you are lost that you are able to preserve yourself; and because you are lost that you will be able to recover.
Therefore the sage views the world as a single universe: he does not see himself, so he is easily recognized. He does not see himself, so he is easily rejected. He does not see himself, so he is easily recognized. He does not see himself, so he is easily named. He does not see himself, so he is easily renounced. Hence he lives without contention and therefore has eternal rest.
If the sage exists and thus regards everything as separate, he will experience the entire world without getting frustrated.
