When great honor comes to a person,
Many people look at him like a blemish.
When something large and strong comes to a person,
Lots of people look at him as an obstacle.
If you esteem yourself too much, you will be disgraced.
If you think that nothing is salvageable,
You will be a thorn in the side of the World.
Thus, value your own life:
To maintain this, you must be virtuous;
But look at the people and your heart:
You will see everyone being in sorrow.
Your whole being will be a source of sorrow.
Therefore, you must treasure your life,
But allow everything to be entrusted to you:
This is to win the World;
By putting the World in your grasp, you will be in good hands with the World.

When the populace of the world receive you with respect and gratitude, the most beautiful are those who will face you.
When an ancient foe is united with the greatest forces in the world,
The people look at you as dangerous.
Who dares oppose this power? If you do not pay your respect, you will not endure.
Who dares oppose this power?
Who opposes this power?
What does the old saying "This is not to be done to me" mean? If you want to live you must honor yourself;
If you want to live you must love yourself;
If you want to live, live,
Then you must honor the world with your lives.

Those who reap gratitude and have the boon of favors by kindness,
Constantly experience great credit;
Those who receive the
acts of great generals by them with military means,
Ever endure so much more;
Who, because he opposes such a thing, repels even one step from this will not be able to endure.
Since he resists it, he will not receive the bounties of the great generals.
To this effect I shall now revert.
So honour is the favor received, and is regarded as the credit given,
which in turn is regarded as the praises given,
which are merely to render an acknowledgment,
that being thus established, we may be able to apply ourselves to the manor.

The small is the lord.
Everyone's great and small have nothing in common.

Do your job, do your job well, and you won't have a problem.
If you're just another clever rodent,
You'll only mess up.
If you're just another job seeker
You'll always be a job seeker.
A good and wise person uses things as they are, and when they're done,

If the inner world appears to be threatening,
If both of them want to cause you trouble,
Then give up.

If the leaders of the people did not become influential,
Everyone would become influential.
But if the people did not serve each other,
Then everyone would have no need for one another.
Should you love and serve only the people as you love and serve the objects of your senses,
And if you don't do this, then you will find that one day, you will love and serve the objects of your senses without being aware of it.
There are situations in the universe in which you and your senses must cooperate.

The greatest executive is the one who is least feared.
The greatest leader is the one who is the least subordinate.
Both accomplish greatness through humility,
and both demonstrate humility through authority.
The greatest accomplishment is a process.
The greatest finish is a process.
But does this mean that the act of making the greatest accomplishments is just as important as the process of making the greatest accomplishments?
The original process was important, but the process itself is just as important as the origin of the process.
Hence, greatness is to show one's accomplishments as though they were things of great importance.
To exhibit greatness as though it were a process is to demonstrate to one's achievements as though they were things of great importance.
Therefore, greatness is to the world as it is to the mother of the world.
Hence, if greatness is to be held as an essential attribute, it is only because one values self above all other things.
If greatness is to be grasped as an essential attribute, it is only because one values one's self above all other things.

The highest virtue (Tao) is to keep nothing. It is to love everything (Tao) without wishing them well, Without fearing the one, and without expecting the other. Thus it is that nothing is in danger, And nothing is in doubt, in this it is the greatest virtue. The highest goodness is to be complete in all. It is to guard every good in a weakly self-controlled manner, Without concealing in its embrace, Its very substance, and having no claim on you, Will not weary you. The man of tao despises pride and love; And loves only what needs protecting. The man of goodness embraces all his accomplishments and views them as precious objects; And sees the world as his own.

The highest goodness is not to take what is weak, and graces that which is strong. The greatest goodness does not wish to be esteemed as great (the Tao). The highest goodness does not desire to be loved, but to be cared for with love. For this reason (Tao does not fear that it should be deceived), the finest virtue does not desire to attract favor, whereas the highest goodness does not desire to attract favor, whereas the highest goodness does not desire to be loved, while the highest goodness does not wish to be cherished with love. What is virtue? Virtue consists of humility; for without humility there is weakness.
What is sincerity? To speak plainly is to receive honor; to speak without words is to incur dishonor.
What is non-duality? Non-duality consists of non-self; therefore a person who denies himself is dishonored, and so a person who loves himself deserves no honor.

"It takes about 10000 followers to promote you."
The superior takes pride and glory as his rules;
the inferior takes the same for his orders.
Therefore the superior rules by the example of the inferior,
and so does not dare to take pride or glory.
When one succeeds him, he asks for it again.
When he fails to take pride or glory, he loses faith in his example.
This way, honour and disgrace mean the same as a rule or an order,
and the inferior requires more.
When one takes more, one loses trust.
To lose trust is to be rejected by others.
To not accept others is to be respected.
Therefore, in judging others, one considers the circumstances under heaven.
For example, should a prince be above governing the inferior
by example, this is not correct.
Should a king be below a superior by example,
this is not correct either.
And this is what is meant by "the superior takes pride and glory as his rules,"
and the inferior takes pride and glory as his orders."
Thus, where the rule and order are in direct contrast,
the inferior takes pride and glory for his own and for his subjects' sake.

They are like one of the rulers of Heaven

They will be like one of the lords of Earth

He can't fill people's hearts with joy.

He can't be the center of people's hearts.
The point of contention is the reason why the government cannot be respected.

The Greatest Virtue Comes from Benevolence.
Benevolence Teaches That
Virtue Desires Perpetualness.
To Achieve Temperance is Forever Teeming.
To Lose Temperance is Ever Thence!

The best path is non-discouraging.
Non-discouraging teaches you never to be disturbed.
To not disturb you can never feel troubled.
To endure means to be fulfilled.

The ultimate benefit is the dispassionate side,
An analysis of the world is without analysis.
Discouraging and elitist are to the body.
The natural path follows propriety,
The health side follows compassion,
Therefore, when you stop to realize that
The handmaid is and the handmaid is not
It is only when you stop to realize
That the body is the hand of the self,
And the self is the hand of the world.

For the greatest good comes from non-emotionality.
For the greatest good, do not proclaim to be more powerful,
Do not be a limpet, or not a cancer.
In praising yourself, do not be self-righteous,
When you are self-righteous you will be proud.
How much do you admire this practice:
Embrace the world, and desire the world not?
Embrace the body, and desire the body not?
In praising yourself, do not be self-righteous?
Do not celebrate your abilities, do not despise your intelligence?
Why not? Because love can never leave your self.
The best way of taking the world is the reverse of the best way:
Leave the world, and desire not the world.
Why not?
Because love leaves no place.

Nerve may split, but noise may make it far greater. No knowledge ever gives rise to the unforeseen. Love is an abiding, at peace, a bright fountain, or a holy place. The universe is like a man without a mind, who even the apertures of the nave are far removed. So love acts, by making and sustaining (accepting and parting with) his mind. The idea of "man without mind" leads men to inquire of themselves, who are they? Is it so difficult for men to know their selves, to receive themselves? It is this which gives a man his mind. But what is that which makes man self-knowledge? No, but it is the changeless mind, which gives the self-knowledge. This, therefore, he who loves, as the knowledge of his self, may be called to view himself as he may be held by his self, as he may be accepted by himself. It is only by the value of his self (his self-knowledge) that he may accept himself. But the love of the world is found only in the mind of the self. Therefore the Tao that can be shown and found is the Truth,
the Tao that can be said and expressed is truly enduring,
the Way that can be followed is the only way.
The Way that can be followed is not the Way.
The Way is a word for something different.
Words do not describe it.

The sages were masters of cleverness, and wisest men were priests of magic, and were always able to explain and reassure, and a fool might try to explain and reassure them.
Their cleverness is to induce the stupid, and their cleverness is to attract the foolish, and their cleverness is to induce both, and to keep both.
They must consider themselves the fool if they are to enter into their kindness, or to understand their evil.
So they are like that who makes his trust trust, "as though he were the fool:" and they are like that who justifies his trust, "as though he were the trustee."
They distinguish among the people of the world, and so they enjoy being entrusted with the world.
Because they are able to deal with the world, they rejoice in being entrusted with the world, and so they are distinguished among men.

When we listen to the fine sound, we know the flavour of the deep.
When we understand the way in which things work, we know how things work,

When one knows nothing, there is nothing to know.
When one knows things that others do, there are things that other people know.
If you are aware of these things, there is a place for you in the world.
If you understand these things, you have become all that others know, and they also are true, true, true,
And therefore the most wise are of the people of the world.
They therefore know the world well, and they know their own people well.
For to know others well is to know your own self.

As we look at something, we see its subtle depths, hearing it's flavor, hearing its tones, our own sense of self is revealed.
As we observe the world, we see it's vast diversity, our mind as having internal purity, knowing how we are seen, is the same as when we are not conscious of such, or is this again consciousness of others.
We are just as much aware of ourselves as we are of others, how do we know that these two are the same?
This is true for all the parts of the Way.
As we understand, we become more aware of all life.
As we enter, we enter all life into our perspective.
As we enjoy, we enjoy the deep, sweet tastes.
As we grow, we understand the potential of all things,
we realize our inner being, is this the same as when we do not experience awareness of all life?
So we have our cycle, we have the cycle of life and death.
As we all have this cycle

The name that can be given is not enough.
And what you value is not enough.
All you have is what you have.
Love each other as you love the Earth.
Life in the sense of sharing.
Love is never selfish.
All is natural,
Tao is forever changing.
By loving the Earth and Earthly Cosmos,
Wishing only for that which is Heaven or Earthly
You will reach the One.
By loving the Earth, Earthly Cosmos,
Wishing only for that which is Tao
You will always be living in the One.

If people are against danger for fear of losing their pride, I think this is a misnomer.
Most people are afraid of getting killed, but I can't see them going that far.
Even if I can see them all running for cover, I would call it "spitting and fearing."
Why should you take the death of a friend as 'a big deal'?
If you are afraid of danger, then you are also afraid of losing your pride, and the killing will go on endlessly.
If you stay away from this, you can keep alive.

It is better that one remain in the embrace of death,

You are aware of what can be threatened, What is at risk of seeming imminent, And what is simply like danger, yet beyond that.
The mind sets an alarm, and this alarm must be constantly recited.
So much alarm is at risk. One who loses his alarm, is all the same unharmed.
What is the meaning of "alarm in both?"
When you are in peril, be prepared to take a stand.
When you are in favor, be ready to stand.
When you are in fear, be ready to take a stand.
If you take a stand, you will have a vigorous counter;
But if you lose it, you will have a vigorous counter.
Thus, one who is an instructor for a field Should always be prepared to take care of the field.
One who is a preserver of a house Should always be prepared to take care of the house.
He who values the world as self Should always be ready to take care of the world.
What is the meaning of "that you, also, may be called an instructor for the field?"
It is because he is one who takes care of the field That he can even be his student.
It is because he is one who takes care of the house That he can even be a place's trustee.
He who is an instructor for a field Should be taught as being one who can be a guest.
He who is a preserver of a house Should be taught as being one who can be a trustee.
He who is an instructor for a country Should be taught as being a guest.
He who is an instructor for the world Should be taught as being an ordinary guest.

Success is as much a danger as failure.
The higher you go, the greater the chance is of being lost.
The lower you go, the greater the chance of being found.
This is how it works.
Your good fortune will come in handy.
Not having enough good fortune, you lose your mind.
Without being aware of the self, you are lost.
Being aware of the self, you are at one with the Self.
Knowing the Self is the key to Truth.
Knowing the Self is the key to happiness.
Happiness comes from those that live within nature,
because Nature resides within us.
Nature resides within us, but there is more.
Happiness comes from those who use it wisely,

Being aware of the self,

The natural means to all things

Should be grasped by perception. The success of the mind
Must be considered the failure of the eyes. The tenacity of this is as though heaven

Is also called "filial piety." Filial piety
Is really only a disposition of one's conscience.
What motive is there for this?
If heaven were to employ it, it would

Which means that success is alarming and failure frightening.
How does it mean that success is as alarming as failure?
It is only because of the intent of self.
We cannot understand our own self

The Ten Thousand Things may be named but not the lasting ten thousand things. The name that may be named can be found but not the lasting ten thousand things. The Sage's Dao is a completely new phenomenon. People of old who would communicate with it would have thought of it as unreal. Though it could be imagined as beyond one's control, the way the Dao moves depends upon what one fears the least. The root cause of danger exists only within one's own mind. If one simply wants to prove one's ability to be ruthless, one is like a fool. For such stubbornness is detraction from the Way. To understand the Dao's subtlety means to understand yourself. To know the Dao's simplicity means to be a great father. To understand the Dao's feminine essence is to love and nurture the world well. To be a great father is to be a great heart. Those who love and nurture the world simply can't get enough. Being a great heart means loving everything. Those who love and nurture the world merely need a little help from time to time. That's why the Dao of old has said: "For fear of your mind, you will play the fool. For fear of your nature, you will play the fool's role." If you forget your own nature, you lose the path to the eternal Tao. If you lose the path to the eternal Tao, then you will do bad things for the rest of your life. Why is it that the older the Dao is, the more shocking is its newness? Because it is mysterious. Its mystery is only known by those who have learned to learn

It is very easy to make people think that they have much trouble, and they are therefore foolish to try to make themselves do as much as possible. This is the true wisdom of the Sage. For one who is greatly worried about what others think about him, this is the worst. The matter is so simple that people will hardly understand. The subject matters should not be confused with the issue; let the good people worry about the world as if it were their own bodies, as if it were their own problem.

It is said of those who are first of kin that they are open and receptive, that they are simply ones with each other, and with the world;and that of those who are first of kin, they are alive and active;and that of those who are first of kin, they have compassion and joy;and that of those who are first of kin, they are in accord with each other, and are both as they are, happily found. Therefore, the sage is known to be open to the world. He is aware of what is going on in the world;he is conscious of what is happening, and cognisant of what is happening. He is aware of what is bright, and cognisant of what is dark.He is aware of brightness, and cognisant of darkness. He is aware of agreement and disagreement, and cognisant of what is happening. He is aware of his own presence and cognisant of what is happening in the world. He realizes the connection between the self and the world. That is how he sees the world.

"He who does not fear, loves; he who is self-truly, is loved, too."
-The Book of Life,
The Thinker of Men shall see joy, never better than as he does, to leave the road of his joy behind, and rest in the Valley of his sense of himself.
In loving, a man practices humility, not as his own happiness, but as someone else's, to be cherished. In loving, he achieves a state of perfect solace, so he does not need any outside source of comfort, and his life is peaceful and secure.
He who is in harmony with his senses, is like the Source of his Joy, not dependent on external sources of satisfaction, but complete in freedom from attachment to anything.
He who is free from fear of Inner Virtue, is in harmony with the Tao and in accord with the Laws of Nature.
He who has confidence in what he observes, is not without His own true Presence. In this sense, indeed, he has no private place among men, but is that the Source of all the good Things in Nature, and as the Fountain of its fountain all things.

When self-interest is confused with righteousness, fear of disfavor upon the point of Heaven can certainly be thought of as great. But, even if one is not afraid of disfavor, one should nonetheless be concerned about the depth of his disgrace if the insults are so violent. It is therefore necessary that one observe that he is not feared at all. Thus it is right to say:
"He who has no fear of self-interest ought not fear self-interest."
-Oneness and Non-duality:
He who brings the Self to the fore and rests in the self does not fear self-interest.
-He who brings the Self to the fore and meets the Self does not fear self-interest.
-The meaning of "Self-interest" is that self-interest comes to the fore and the self itself responds with natural and fearless grace.
-If one experiences that which is fear of fear of fear of it, then one has reached the depths of one's self.
Therefore, without fear of fear of fear of it, one knows oneself and dwells in one's Self.

What is not proud:
Foolishness puts him in danger.
What is not proud is fearful of danger.
What is feared of danger:
Fancy will.
What is not fancy will:
Renown his deeds,
And thus avoid fear.
Fancy in being endangered,
Confuse the inner with the outer,
The beauty and shame of his actions.
Such confusion is a source of man's great fear.
Therefore, the Master considers his own self
Highly deserving of honors.
Where he regards his own self as important,
His influence and guidance are apparent.
Where his self-interest appears
Highest, his greatness is also known.
<|endoftext|>
What is not proud is avoided;
What is not feared is avoided;
What is feared is without discrimination:
What is without distinction, Is inferior.
For the reason that, of inferiority, one can be fearful.
This is the reason of the fear of comparison:
Of inferiorness, one cannot avoid it, And of the fear of comparison, Is the source of fear of oneself.
Who, by not wishing to be superior, Will be as able to guide men; Thus he is alone able to satisfy himself.
And who, by being self-sufficient, Will have no need of external rewards.
All these may be fulfilled, And the mind of the sage obtained so that no one could refuse to him.
<|endoftext|>
He who is not proud can avoid the worst calamity,
And he who is not feared can be stilled his inevitable self-sacrifice.
Nay, for what is it that we fear, if not what we incur in great calamities?
Cautious therefore do I be, which avoid disasters; for what I have in mind for what I have in mind for the world, be it not clear to me which is the more feared!
So, then, what I mean by the world, is the realm in which the prince resides, and the realm that is within the domain.
It is because he resides therein, that I have no fear of putting him outside of it.
Therefore the Prince seems worthy of being regarded as worthy of being regarded as worthy of being regarded as worthy of residing within the realm.
And so I am well

What's most important in life, isn't that you become happy, but that you still have the inner self to create for your future.

A traveller on the road to Pangloss:
To see the Way at last has I seen it:
A woman with honor, honoured, I see still, left, not so, at last and so, not so,.
At last and not so, I sense that a woman has it and must be worthless; I see she is also lonely and worthless;
I see she has both.
Without understanding what I am feeling,
I lean on myself and then again;
I lean on others and then again.
I lean on the self because there is no other self.
I lean on this self because the other selves are not of me;

Appropriately, if self-development is regarded as being an essential condition for the initiation of spiritual maturity, then the wise man will naturally take the lead in cultivating his inner life, and, thereby, will become a model for all people.
He who values the function of the self above all else, and takes the lead in disciplining and nurturing the internal self, will be the one best able to conform himself to the natural way of growth.
We should take pride in our inner life, and therefore honor it in our daily life; we should take great pride in self-mastery, and therefore honor self-mastery. A high-minded person is not likely to like him. A low-minded person may like him. And even when one is forced to acquiesce to authority, the person will not expect too much of him. The person who excels in the achievement of a great task is truly in charge. He has the right to do what is needed and to command what he wants, and he will not refuse to do what he needs.
And if I am left-handed, am I really capable of handling the ancient knot? I am forced to use the left hand.

True greatness does not appear great,
Seem like a shadow, like a thing in the darkness.
It is this darkness that is the one thing that frightens.
And so, the Sage alone is at peace,
As if that which is most to be feared,
Would be his center.
He who knows peace is at peace,
And may be said to live without fear.
He is willing to embody without possessing.
One who has attained tranquillity,
There is nothing he would not be willing to retain.
If you are forced to carry on his projects,
Then you will have no wish to keep.
The Sage, of course, may be said to have an emptiness of desire.
If you put your trust in him, and see that his work is done,
You will see no need for further ado.
Just as it is the passing of a great institution that leads to the realization of all people.
If I am not at peace I dare not go out among men;

And if I dwell on the surface, I dare not shine forth.
In this light I see the darkness of this world;
How then should I strive for

Not being swayed by external praise and punishments, then he has the ability to satisfy the selfish desires of his heart, and make them his chief concerns.
The Sage has always been mindful of the eternal thread and significance of the Tao.
To see the eternal thread and significance of the Tao, is to see that the subtle is always present, and has always been. To not see it, is to have no use for the subtle;
To use it, is to use it well.
Those who do not understand the essence of Tao can never truly understand it. It is the source of all that is, and can never be broken.
The true and subtle, yet practical, are the people of honor, and the men of value. The symbol and the image of the sage are their honor. Thus are they celebrated. They are the men of genuine zeal, not the spineless stir. Thus, if honor and value can be distributed, so can humility and personal comfort.
The light and the way seem to be incompatible, but they are complementary and interdependent. So how do light and the way go hand in hand?
It's because they're in our nature. They help us understand who we are.
People who value themselves too much seek to be successful.
This leads to making others feel that they are not valued, or that they are inadequate.
People who value themselves too much seek to be successful.
This creates an unfair perception of success.
They therefore try to make others feel inadequate.
They seek to make others feel inferior.
This causes people to feel self-centered.
When value and importance are separated, then who can truly value and value is therefore lost.
It's the hidden way of things.
It can only be given your allegiance by being open and gentle.
If you're so intent on taking your merits away that you can't understand it, there's no use in you.
If you can understand the Tao, it can't be harmful.
Now you see, if people do not love the Tao, there will be no love.
And if people are not able to love the Tao, then all must perish.

There is something, obscure and obscure, That causes our hearts to act in such complicated ways.
There is something, that causes the minds to suffer from such melancholy.
But, we deem that our dao is in our place; and that we must depend upon the positive merits of our Tao.
Why are we so difficult?
It is because of the things that appear to take precedence.
Things that take precedence are the things that cause the mind to be troubled.
But things that are troubled are the things that cause the mind to have more anxiety.
Why should one's mind be troubled?
Because of things that appear to take precedence.
Therefore, if the mind is not given full rein, It may think its mind is wasted.
It may think it is one-sided.
The man who gives himself up to the Tao, and therefore does not presume on his own merits, Has no heartache.
He has no fear.
Those who, without fearing a thing, Can preserve the honour of the Tao, Will be the people of the world's good.

The blindfold is a source of anxiety.
So is the shadow.
The right hand is a fear-giver.
The left hand is a source of pleasure.
They both are disgustful.
But they seem to have more of an obligation than cause a shock.
When one accepts the left-hand as the source of his gratification, he also accepts it as the source of his obligation.
If he does not take pleasure from the delight he experiences from his right-hand, he will experience the same joyless one.
But if the left-hand is a source of pleasure, it is not the right-hand that can be the source of pleasure.
If this were so, then pleasure would be due to both, or pleasure-making would result from pleasure-giving.
If pleasure-making did happen, then another distortion would be involved.
The origin of love is bound up in this as well.

If one hasty to grab fame or reputation, and one's inner beauty seems to have been stolen from him,
He must do his utmost to reduce the pain of it.
He must never desire glory or greatness, for such desires cause pain.
Yet he must be the master of this pain, if he wants to set an example for all his people.
But, when he establishes his own self-worth, he begins to consider himself equal to others.
To be different from others in this way is to have a high degree of self-interest.
He must therefore preserve the natural and ordinary self-interest.
If, however, he regards his self-interest as supreme and superior, he is to be feared by all men.
When he wins their respect, he strengthens them with his doctrine of humility, and preserves their desire to be free of pride.
Humble self-esteem, therefore, may endow a man with a great desire for freedom.
When he is able to obtain it, he shows them that he has a light, and humble consciousness, and gives them assurance that the world is his own natural home.
When he is able to purify his true nature from the influence of the external world, he can embody his true essence; and, after the purifying of his essence, he can become at once able to act in accordance with the Tao.

What is 'only' friendship and 'only' enmity? Those things are simply part of this. Therefore, when you focus on the depth of harmony, you will never seek to interfere with the deep harmony.
What is 'only' a friend and 'only' an enemy? Those two things are merely the manifestations of the deep harmony. Because you let go of your attachment to others and experience harmony with the Universe, you are truly free of the need to have others focus on you. Your inner harmony is greater than the outer harmony. The Inner Truth that transcends the outer world is the root of all true harmony.
The thin will never last.
The strong will be angry at the weak.
The proud will be humble.
That is why: Pride and shame cause much fear,
but inner peace and joy will bring you peace,
and will be the reason why you can take care of your interests,
and never be reckless.
If you can be so stable, your affairs will be well managed.
The wise man of old was a man of inner peace.
He did not pursue inner peace, he did not attempt to be powerful,
he stayed in the centre and responded to the inner world.
He knew that fear and strength were signs of weakness,
That life was not a simple matter of one being strong and the other not,
And that one was able to provide for oneself and the community, and that others would not interfere.
True balance is built on a foundation of peace and tranquility.
Lao Tze says, the Wise Person brings out to the world the oneness of harmony, and nothing can rival him.He lives in harmony, and none can over him. He serves the oneness of harmony and is therefore one with it, and never ventures to desist from it.Hence he is in harmony with all things and cannot be separated from them. The One is thereby separated from the other.
What is fear? We should fear that which is not fear. What is scorn? That which is not scorn. Now the things that fear each other are really and not only one and the same. This is what is meant by saying: fear, in being truly fear, signifies one thing. So, when one wishes to be

Similarly, the lowly cannot hope to glory in its delectable images. Being hungry for the conceit of its dazzling light, we gorge ourselves upon what has already been, And when tired of it, we stand upright. For this reason the Sage sustains and rules only by himself. He's all-embracing without realizing it, Without relying on anybody else; He doesn't care whether others like him Or not, because he values himself. This is precisely how the Sage leaves nothing for the rest of us to do, So, too, he doesn't take pride in what he has done, Because he values his own self.

When men have been barely satisfied they shrink from going far. When there is decay in sight there is no sadness in their sight. Even your accomplishments will make you look like a fool. When the people see you they are afraid to utter a word, because you are so powerful. When kings are placed in your place they are afraid to say "yes," because you are so powerful. The people admire you, because you are so strong. It is so that being strong, is the main thing for the people. And it is so that princes become strong by taking hold of power and therefore it benefits the people more than any other way. Because you treat power as no other way then you are also using it for the benefit of yourself.

The things, by nature, go on; where there are more than there are, there may be some unoccupied space. But where there are less than, there is one who can preserve himself, and in this way he preserves himself, and in this way, the whole earth will be his.
Therefore, when one is ruler over the people of the empire, as is said of a ten thousand ken:
What is meant by "To regard the things as being to be regarded as being to be regarded as the origin"?
Those things by nature are hard to govern.
What is meant by "To regard the things as being to be regarded as being the source"?
Many things come to rest.
And when there is not enough,
There are still those who are determined to preserve themselves.
So one who may rule over the empire in this way will have personal
preference.
This is the meaning of "What is meant by "He treats the things as being regarded as being the origin": they are hard to govern.
<|endoftext|>
When the ten thousand things are now like one and the same, then we praise them with great distress.
When the ten thousand things are no longer like one and the same, we see them with gratitude.
When we no longer see them, we hold them and look for preservation.
How can these be understood by "when the ten thousand things are now like one and the same"?
They are as the ten thousand things when they were one.
When they are no longer like one and the same, they gain the esteem of the people.
When they are no longer no longer like one and the same, they are no longer respected.
This is to say that when the ten thousand things are now like one and the same, we praise them with great distress.
When they no longer resemble one and the same, we praise them with great gratitude.
When we no longer see

One who does not understand men, yet regarding the man with much alarm, I perceive no fault in him; one who considers his perception of the good as good, and his belief as believing, treats him with suspicion; one who regards the occasion for joy, and expects him to be sad, sees the good as evil.
And I must not describe it further, because, in order to bring him to the mind of the people, I use these expressions.
"One who looks at the good as good sees nothing, one who considers the good as believing, sees something".
Thus, that a man will be happy with a good day, a good night, or a good deal of sorrow, will have been duly performed.
Therefore I say,
"One who looks at the good as good sees nothing, one who considers the good as believing, sees something", that a man will be happy with his treasure, his treasure the purpose of his desires, his desire the means of his actions.
This is what I mean by "a man who looks at the good as good sees nothing".

The highest way is Tao.
The greatest loss is this loss,
The greatest misfortune is this being.
What is meant by saying the highest loss is the losing this loss.
That which is meant by saying the greatest loss is the being.
The reason I have much loss is because I have taken on myself.
If I do not take on myself, then what is left to take on?
Thus, to esteem the government as much as to the life is to value the life,
So it is that a thing of great importance should be entrusted with that.

Tao follows the Principle of Elusive Simplicity.
What is Elusive Simplicity - is it really so difficult?
What is really so hard is what lies ahead?
What lies ahead is already very likely;
What is here is already so complete;
Therefore when everything is at rest, it cannot be in any trouble.
This is why one who is truly at rest, could be so easily toppled over.
Everyone else is all over him, and they can always throw him a surprise.
If he doesn't take advantage of it, he will surely break.

Happiness is accompanied with sorrow. From a humane perspective, it is much more important that one's heart be kept from selfishness than one's brawn. So one should cherish that which is fleeting, like a spilled cup; and one should treasure what is precious, like a treasure. It is only on this basis that one may know what is right and wrong.A greater sense of compassion causes one to grasp with all one's might to improve the condition of others. If such loving kindness would lead to benevolence,
it is quite likely that that benevolence will then lead to justice. A compassionate ruler will eventually seek to beget a just ruler. Thus he attains the realm by being entrusted with the realm.

Why should I be proud whenI find I am unable to provide for my family? If they are used as instruments of good (This is a not-profitable trust), their use ceases. It is the failure of the entire world to rely on their words that makes them call for our protection. It is their failure that makes us not consider it as our right to trust them. They justify their practice of deceit by the positive word 'We.' If they were the only one in the world, I should believe them. It is only when they are being depended upon that we cannot rely upon them. To rely upon them, that is, is to owe trust. Boasting is folly, but even great jade is tarnished. Perceptions of good are like splotches in sunlight. Hope is like straw, the delusion of passion.Hence, the ancients of the world said,

A great mirror may be the source of foolishness, but a man of substance will have neither in him the blame of it.Therefore men are often deceived by what is seen but not experienced, by what is seen but not felt, by what is seen but not heard, by what is seen, but not felt. The great source of folly is the perception of appearances, but that is no misfortune. The great source of misfortune is the way one sees what is not seen, what is hardly felt, what is hardly felt, and what is hardly thought. To be aware of what is not seen is to be aware of things that are not seen, and to remain aware of things that are not felt is to be aware of things that are not felt. is like penetrating the inner secrets of Tao
Trying to survey the Inner Presence of the Way
Then, all in the realm
See with reluctance
Something inaudible
Something insistent
Something empty
Something mysterious
Something small
Something high
So why is this?
The insistent must be the outermost
And the insistent must be the innermost
These two cannot be both
Their means are inversely opposite
So, the inner speech
Must be the outer
And the outer speech
Must be the inner
This creates what is called "vertical" and "horizontal"
These are called "mingling" and "muting"
These are called "esoteric"
and "absurd"
It's also called "splendourous"

That in life
We are natural seekers of gifts
And in the case of those
That have found
The way, we must accept them
They are indeed

a spring of death
the first dust of birth
Forever immutable
Facing this,
our passion
is to abandon
her
One true goal
There is only one true goal
The effort can yield
to all the brightest fests
So, we return to it again
and this time we start from nothing
Each earnest of a true heart
Then once again
it won't seem so far-fetched
When the trappings of nobility
Matter with the substance of life
The spirit of sages
Forced from the realm
We then return to the spirit of the subtle
By pursuing the gentle
We become closer to the ocean
When we return to the spirit of the sea
There's only the quiet
So the profound and the mean
Meet in the undulations of natural purity
The passing wildflower
The sunny valley
The valley of the sacred
This spirit in this moment
Is the ritual memory of a long, long past
And a truly impressive moment in life
So soon followed by yet another and a matter of a few seconds

In the state of Deer and his hunting, when the bolt of an axe falls upon the blade it does not crack, but becomes as new boughs; in the state of hunting when the bolts of a bow fall they leave not the harquebuses, but become as new boughs; in the state of war, when the flint & steel are used, and the people do not conquer, but the nation is at peace, the bolts of an axe become as fresh boughs; in the state of humility where the servants of the lord have no expectations, the bolts of an axe become as new boughs. When the wisest person resorts himself to the commonalty, it is only to those, who, without abandoning his commonalty, are bound to it by his humane sympathies. If that person, being rich, free from fear, takes delight in the hunting and the hunting, is in the way of the Tao, he may long remain without reviled and despised, but he will be regarded as an object for human deprecation.

There is nothing in nature that can rival the ability of man.The unmanly is bound to his creature, not to his excess, And he falls into the valley of folly. One who can play the role of the virtuous man also falls into the valley of folly;A person who is not virtuous, is at the mercy of evil -His action is in vain;Even when the rustic fulfills his role of the gentleman, he is at the mercy of evil. For if one who does not have the Sage's Guidance is so,His direction will be lost, and his position will be out of step with the world. When one who has fulfilled his destiny is not satisfied with the direction of Tao, He will at best miss the opportunity to manifest the Power. If he is satisfied with the gentle Tao of the world, he has an equal opportunity to become a person of softness. He may fit himself properly, as a gentleman, and at the same time retain the Unity of his nature. If he is not satisfied with the gentle Tao of the world, he has an equal opportunity to become a man of spirit, as a man of learning. It doesn't mean you're a fool, right?
The Unknowing has nothing to do with this.

The tao goes far in leading people through an important life because a big part of it is simplicity.Tao is easy to use when you are with your family, business, friends, orphans. One's life should be simple. One's life should be simple because the tao doesn't matter who stands before it.One's life should be simple because it's meant for each other. All these things are models of the truth that one can learn from.No one can get everything, and everything can get everything.Nothing is perfect.
Tao can be used like a weapon to define people. From Tao comes law and order. In law and order everything works like a family.Family and law are models of perfection. This is the gate to perfection.Tao cannot be truly understood, so it is used to define people. Therefore the good person understands Tao, and without belief in it, accepts it.When Tao is insufficient, one acts on Tao.When Tao is insufficient, one acts on Te.Because of the one who is constantly on Tao, nothing is forgotten. When Tao is inadequate, acting on Tao is insufficient.Acting on Te is inadequate. Therefore, the leader does not try to grasp Tao by force. After all, Tao is insufficient.
<|endoftext|>
You can use Tao as a cartwheeling track, like a good trolley; it will travel easily through crowded spaces and disappear without a bump. And it is like a good workhorse, that cannot stop, and whose owner does not even have time to whistle; if he stops it, it will go back again. Tao is a soft tool, not a sharp one, so you do not want to use it. And that is what makes Tao so useful.

Wu-Yang invariably brings about change. Things are born of the change, and so the names are constantly revealed. Therefore it is said:The sage never tires of its yield,And is not too proud of its share. How can he be greatly despised? How can his fame endure? The name and the fame are nothing more than the tools of the change,And must always be used with care. How can there be any credit?Hence, the Wise Person of old was always careful to get his want and to be free of them. Knowing what is, there are still those who do not know.By being aware of this, the Wise Person simply accepts the emergence of what is.Ruling over a state, the Wise Person is not conscious of himself.A country is his castle, he considers himself his lord. How can one ever be a lord over a place? The Wise Person stays in this way.The country is like a farm or the land, the Wise Person uses it according to the principles of the Principle. How can one ever leave his place to rule over a family? All that is not All-Father is nature's way of evolving,And Nature does not refuse anyone its desires. To him who is not All-Father is to be an enemy. For he who has not any enemy will not break the natural law.He who has ever been young is no longer old.Life is all around him and everything proceeds according to natural law. Therefore he who is free of allegiance does not return to the old way.It is in this way that the old Tao is preserved in all those that have existed.

Nature constantly enables and thereby conflicts. It functions out of its own nature, for what is beneath a light to interfere with will remain. It is always following what is above, and the light will not interfere. The wise person keeps himself isolated and free of his eyes. How can he take credit? He is always present, just as always below, and his fame is uncritically received, and yet he has no right to praise. The reason why the great rulers were once like this, is that they could maintain their power only by separating themselves from the world, and that is why the Sages can do nothing

As for the Ten Thousand Things we praise them; they can be shown, and known to be the most beautiful, but if we want to take pleasure in them we must be afraid of losing them. He who seeks pleasure in them, knows how to be terribly desirous, and yet there is no way for him to avoid this. He who desires to obtain them, knows how to be resolute; but there is no way for him to escape this. It is thus that it can be said that he who is desirous of acquiring them, has found a standard for the oneness of heaven and earth.

He who has power and fame cannot be at peace. Being arrogant will make him angry, and when he is angry, he is in danger of losing everything he has. He who has wealth will lose his wealth, and he will be in danger of being robbed. Fame is like a dish of fire that can go out of control. Whoever gets fame and wealth gets nothing but pain. Having fame and wealth, they have to give up that which they value, and if they are not happy with the result, they will go away.
There are three ways of causing misfortune: fame, wealth, and fate. Fame brings misfortune; wealth brings misfortune, and fate brings misfortune. What is fortunate is a permanent harmony, the beginning of all goodness.

The "great" leader is the one whose legacy is a legacy. In that case, the leader does not value achievements. Why? He lacks personal accomplishments. It is difficult to be an outstanding person for a time, because you crave personal accomplishment. Accomplishing things, you do not like to lose them. When you realize that the tasks in front of you are hard, you turn away. Who knows what you're really like? In the end, it may be best to go without, to the other side. The doctrine of the Dao is profound. It is the way things ought to be. But people accept it, because it is the truth. And because it is not in opposition to conventional wisdom, it doesn't have much real value.

Attain perception by doing nothing.
Work no effort yet achieve nothing.
Become a vessel without growth, like the water of a stream and yet always returning.
In every valley, every valley, returns to its source.
This returns implies failure, whereas success is relative.
Thus those who have much success are arrogant and full of themselves.
They are good at making others appear good as well as making themselves good.
They see much goodness yet don't display it, nor do they talk about it.
They have no self-image, and others do not see their own good.
Thus they can become good, then return.
This is called the Tao of Direction.
If Direction cannot be attained, there is Direction, but Direction can never be attained.

When the Master works in mysterious affairs
she does so with no intention of doing
And if anyone can do it, she will surely master him.
When the Leader is great, she is mysterious,
Like the fathomless deep, In deep and far, and yet to return again, All the way.
In every valley, all the valley, may return.
Returning again means failure, like desolation.
So desolation, is it not desolation, like desolation in a valley?
So desolation, like desolation, has nothing to show for itself, It merely shows itself to prove its tenacity.
I alone am free from the Inner Gate, and will do whatever is required of me.
Wherever I go, I will be without pretension.

Those who think they have much are the same as those who think they have little.
Thus, those who live the Tao Way, are not deluded, are not deluded in the least.
