The extinction (per USFWS 2021) and the colors of leaf and flower (per USFWS 1991) apply specifically to P. g. var. lanaiensis, not the whole species. Distinguish better between the variety, the specimen of it, and the species.

Phyllostegia glabra is a species of flowering plant in the mint family known by the common name ulihi phyllostegia. It is endemic to Hawaii.[1]

One variety of this species, var. lanaiensis, was federally listed as an endangered species of the United States. It was a perennial herb with reddish or red-veined green leaves and white or white-tinged flowers. No other specimens have been seen since a single sighting was recorded on Lanai in the 1980s. The variety may still exist on the island, perhaps in rugged habitat that has not been surveyed recently.[3]

A Fish and Wildlife Service press release in September 2021 formally proposed the variety P. g. var. lanaiensis be delisted from the endangered species list due to extinction.[4]
