Fan Works
- As part of a communications test in Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, Draco sends Harry the message "beware of the green monkey," specifically mentioning it was Spy Speak in a play he saw once.
- Nobody Dies, an Evangelion fanfic, quotes Xykon in chapter 21.Yui: This is your Idiot Tax. This is the price you pay for having a quickie in the broom closet when you are supposed to be watching the Children and your Daughter.
- The Doctor Who/Babylon 5 crossover Unconventional Courtship Ficlets: Solution by Induction by JohnAmendAll has Lyta Alexander using her Touched by Vorlons power to deal with a horde of zombies the same way Redcloak disposes of Tsukiko to make sure she can't be revived.
Literature
- Tales of MU has the local equivalent of Occam's Razor renamed "Durkon's Hammer".
Tabletop Games
- Dungeons & Dragons provides a subtle one in the 3.5 Dungeonscape supplement, where you can buy a bouncy ball... just like the one Xykon inscribed a symbol of insanity on. Rich Burlew was one of the authors.
Video Games
- Anti-Idle: The Game's "lrn2craft" chain of crafted melee weapons is a long list of polearms taken straight from this strip (which is itself a reference to Monty Python's Flying Circus). It also includes a broken greatsword with a green hilt, just like Roy's sword in the strip.
- Dawn of the Dragons has a magic called Volatile Runes which Flavour Text is a blatant reference. You unfurl the scroll and begin to carefully read the message within.
"I prepared Volatile Runes this morning."
"Huh" you begin, "I wonder what that—" before you can finish your thought the parchment explodes violently in your face, knocking you to the ground in a burst of fire and smoke. - Heroine's Quest has the quote "Dude, don't taunt the god-killing abomination!" referring to The Snarl in the OOTS comics; moon-devouring ur-wolf Fenrir in the game.
- In Lost Pig, the player character explores a dungeon that's already been cleared out by several other adventuring parties. At one point he comes across graffiti saying, "Belkar was here".
- Minecraft: One of the splash texts that may come up when you start the game reads "Haley loves Elan!"
- Minecraft: Story Mode: An old post on Notch's Tumblr stated that the Order of the Stone's name was based off the Order of the Stick's name. In fact, the game's working title was Minecraft: The Order of the Stone but was changed because people might have mixed it up with the name of the comic.
- Ordinator — Perks of Skyrim: A note you can find simply reads "I prepared Explosive Runes this morning." Closing the note causes it to explode in your face.
Web Animation
- Overly Sarcastic Productions:
- In the Trope Talks video about the Five-Man Band, Red states that The Smart Guy is likely to be a mage in fantasy settings. While saying this, a picture of Vaarsuvius pops up.
- In her video about Mind Control, Red states that when bad guys attempt to use mind-controlled heroes to strike psychological nerves in their friends, it sometimes makes the heroes realize that their friends are being controlled, citing the part where Roy finally realizes Durkon is possessed by a vampire as an example.
- Welcome to...: When the narrator sarcastically states that there is a lot of untreaded ground in the genre of Gaming Webcomics, Order of the Stick pops up in the brief Freeze-Frame Bonus showing several other Gaming Webcomics. Interestingly enough, it also pops up twice.note
Webcomics
- Darths & Droids directly mentions Xykon in strip #676, putting him on the same level of Obviously Evil as Darth Vader.
- In Girl Genius, among many, many signs referencing other webcomics, we have:BURLEW's RESTAURANT. Try an Order of the Stick with our famous pie!
- Goblins:
- One of the filler pages consists of a very crudely drawn stick-figure comic that was drawn in-universe by Fumbles. One of the other goblins reading the strip felt like he'd seen a stick-figure comic set in a universe which adhered to Dungeons & Dragons rules somewhere before.
- The spin-off Tempts Fate has The Rant Golem, which Lampshades and complains about several things wrong with the comic, before concluding "Order of the Stick is better."
- The Handbook of Heroes: In "Back to Basic", Magus (actually Demon Queen possessing her body) tries casting, among other overpowered spells, spiked tentacles of forced intrusion.
- One "critical missives" from Rusty and Co. features the Princess in the OotS-stick figure style.
- At the 2012 Halloween party on The Whiteboard, Gino dressed up as Roy Greenhilt.
- Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic has a full-strip homage copying both the style and page layout of OotS, and titled "The Fellowship of the Stick".
Web Videos
- One of the plot hooks for the campaigns mentioned in Dark Dungeons is "The evil lich Xykon is attempting to reach the Gate!"
